How Maresca's Principles are Making Chelsea Dominate

Football Meta11:15

Transcription

Chelsea have been dominating their

recent matches with moresa using

different structures such as the 325 or

even the 316 creating a system built on

overarching principles that allows the

team to adapt to the opponent and find

clever solutions to tricky situations

but with everything going so well it's

easy to forget just how much of an

uphill battle Moresco was facing at the

start of the season and he's had to make

some crucial decisions both on and off

the pitch in this video we're going to

be taking a look at the foundations

moresa is setting to make Chelsea a

dominant Force this season from choosing

the right Squad to giving the players

clear principles they can rely on to

find solutions by themselves this will

help us understand just how far this

team can go and if they really are title

contenders let's take a look Welcome

Back to Football meta now I'll admit my

expectations for moresa were low his

appointment caught me by surprise and

their preseason form had me thinking

there were still way too many issues

within the team that needed to be

addressed but so far I've been proven

wrong and moresa has turned this team

into something worth watching and

analyzing but to get to this point the

first crucial step that moresa had to

take was addressing the bloated Squad

size having to deal with one of the

biggest squads in the league would be a

challenge for any manager but to mesa's

credit he very quickly established which

players would be part of the team and

which players would be excluded this did

obviously cause a lot of frustration

over the summer with key players in Cola

Gallagher and Trevor Chala being forced

out but it's safe to say Chelsea finally

have a Rec recognizable team and there's

clearly a foundation being set some

positions are now completely set in

stone while other positions are depend

on unhealthy competition between players

with Netto Felix Mada and Sancho all

being used effectively in this system

and if players are not performing then

their price tag is not influencing the

manager's decision the squad depth Works

in their favor in any of the Cup

competitions with players like mudri and

anunu getting crucial minutes and

impressive performances in these games

but working into mesa's Premier League

starting 11 is proving to be harder and

harder this is creating a hierarchy

within the team that was completely

absent in previous Seasons now

understanding exactly all the changes

that moresca is implementing this season

required a lot of research which was

made incredibly simple thanks to the new

generation of Opera browser the

reimagined Opera 1 R2 brings together so

many incredible features that can speed

up any workflow I consistently have

multiple tabs on the go and tab Islands

made it incredibly simple to group my

work into different categories I had one

tab Island for all the news on injuries

and transfers and one for all their

statistics the split screen function

also made it easy for me to compare data

from multiple sources and the two tabs

now act as their own window that you can

move around meaning you don't have to

consistently readjust the size of any

window the tab traces also lets you

easily track your recently used tabs

which helps you quickly identify where

you're coming from at a glance with the

darker the underscore indic indicating

the tab you visited most recently the

new browser also comes with an

incredible AI feature ARA the ARA

command line can help you with any

queries and speed up your workflow with

instant help on any research you may

need to complete the ARA image

generation allows you to quickly create

any image you need straight from the

browser while the image recognition can

help you learn more about any image you

upload from a product you like to help

in transcribing your notes but one of

the features I like the most is simply

how personal you can make this browser

allowing you to customize the theme all

the way down to the font and the color

of all the toggles while the floating

music player is such a nice Edition that

you can position anywhere so you always

have your music controls ready so if you

want to make your browsing experience

even more enjoyable then you can get

started for free with the link down

below thank you to Opera for sponsoring

this video now these changes laid the

groundwork for all the Tactical work

that moresa is doing on the pitch and

the second crucial step in mesa's plan

was giving the team a clear structure to

build from while the Chelsea we are

currently seeing in their recent games

is capable of adopting many different

shapes there is a core 325 structure the

moresa has slowly been tweaking since

his first game the biggest changes from

moresa have mostly been down to the

players that form this shape and he's

already experimented with so many

different players in each position a

good example is Malo Gusto that has

slowly picked up minutes at right back

in some games inverting as the double

pivot in others inverting as the

offensive midfielder while in in other

games also being the source of width on

the flank he's been used at left back

and he's been used as the left attacking

midfielder also but regardless of which

players are being used it's the

principles that make this system what it

is and there are three that can be seen

in all of Chelsea's offensive moves the

first is the idea of diagonal passing

Lanes moresa rarely uses direct vertical

channels when building his attacks and

the position of the players means

progression usually happens both from

one vertical channel to another and a

horizontal channel to the the next to

understand this we need to look no

further than the position of the three

players in the center in situations

where the opposition leaves space for

Central passes then these routes through

the middle are very effective but

obviously the opposition won't allow

these passes too often so it requires

clever movement to create space slightly

different to other teams using this

shape the two Advanced midfielders will

usually start in quite a wide position

attempting to create a 2V1 against the

fullback it's common to see these two

players rotate either side of the center

receiving the ball out wide with the

Wingers instantly attacking forward and

giving an option in behind if they're

closed down in the center then the two

wide Defenders can easily get involved

and push forward without being pressed

in situations where the opposition is

spread out then passes right through the

center are also a key way they move up

the pitch one of the best games where we

can see the use of these diagonal

passing Lanes was actually in their 2-1

loss to Liverpool earlier in the season

with graen Burch often getting caught in

a 2V1 between the the lines if Chelsea

were able to move the ball into either

Lavia or kaiso then these diagonal

passes through the center prove to be

extremely dangerous these diagonal

passes can be seen everywhere Jackson

will consistently drop deep to receive

the ball between the lines before laying

it off to any player in support if they

break past the Midfield line then play

shifts diagonally forward into the

Winger with always someone attacking the

half bace and giving an option forward

this allows Chelsea to progress quickly

and can rapidly shift from one side of

the pitch to another which highlights

the second crucial principle which is

supporting runs no matter if it's

players receiving the ball in the half

space or out wide on the touchline

mesa's system is at its most dangerous

with players running ahead of the ball

consistently it means more and more

players have the license to push forward

and add support and the player on the

ball always has three options available

ranging from high risk High reward to

lowrisk consolidating possession a good

example of these runs can be seen from a

player like karella who is usually used

on the left of the back three but in

situations where there is space to do so

he very quickly rushes forward to give

the Winger an option it allows Chelsea

to get many players forward in the box

and could be one of the main reasons as

to their High rate of through balls this

season ranked second in the league for

successful throw balls per 90 to ensure

these two principles of diagonal passes

and supporting runs work effectively the

mesa's third principle comes into play

and that is freeing space for a teammate

and third man runs Chelsea are not a

team that will overload the flanks and

create big groups of players around the

ball but are more likely to spread out

and try and give each player as much

time on the ball as possible there are

moments where the two holding

midfielders are being manm marked and so

they will slowly drift apart to free up

a space for Jackson dropping deep if

Chelsea are attacking quickly out wide

the attacking midfielder won't wait in

this space but will preemptively attack

forward to ensure his teammate is in a 1

V one and instantly has an option

forward it's a principle that is

definitely easier said than done but by

having a good understanding of where all

your teammates are positioned it makes

it easier to know which spaces should be

left vacant these three principles are

at the core of what moresa is doing with

Chelsea and with a solid positional

structure the players are really

starting to click in this system but

there is also the added bonus of a

player like Cole Palmer who has the

license to roam around the pitch more

than any other player in this team in

fact it's common to see Palmer show up

anywhere when Chelsea are in possession

often dropping deep shifting to the

opposite flank or attacking the space in

behind but it also gets the most out of

players like Nicholas Jackson giving him

more space to operate between the lines

where he can be so dangerous whilst also

having the support around him to play

balls in behind or be on the receiving

end of crosses into the box so mesa's

principles are making Chelsea a force to

be reckoned with but in recent games it

seems as if we're entering phase three

of mesa's plan with even more fluid

rotation between the players

specifically they two one win over

Leicester is what caught my eye with

Chelsea building their attacks in a 3-1

33 shape similar to C's Diamond Midfield

in possession this allowed Chelsea to

have different players dropping deep if

needed it meant there was more support

for any player out wide with two players

rotating to add support and they could

fill the box with a lot of players in

their 5-1 win against Southampton ja

Felix would often move more centrally

when Chelsea were building on the left

freeing the flank for Kara to get

forward giving Chelsea three options

between the lines whilst also still

having three players threatening a run

in behind the defense and shows that

moresa is not running out of ideas just

yet with all this being said there's

still a long way to go this season and

while they are still technically in the

title race only time will tell if

Chelsea can sustain these levels for the

whole season parallels can be drawn to

mesa's season at Leicester starting

strong but slowly losing the intensity

as the season progressed but in my

opinion there's still one issue that

needs to be ironed out and and that is

their defensive consistency moresa has

very clear defensive principles when out

of possession with an aggressive man

oriented press in the first phases of

the opposition's buildup reverting to a

442 when in aan Block structure and

generally speaking Chelsea do well in

these positions and are a difficult team

to bypass in the initial stages but

their defensive line can be exposed at

times while their defensive numbers have

significantly improved from last season

there are still moments of confusion in

the defensive line that have led to Big

chances for the opposition even in their

game against Aston Villa Watkins found

himself through on goal after fana

failed to deal with it effectively and

while the kiso experiment was definitely

positive overall he was caught out in

behind on a few occasions against bigger

clubs simple defensive mistakes have

meant that they dropped points from

positive offensive performances and it's

a trend that could cost them dearly as

the season progresses but how far do you

think this Chelsea team can go do you

think they'll be in the title race in a

few months time and which players

deserve more credit for their excellent

start to the season leave your thoughts
