Virtually every media outlet is discussing this interview, and there's significant criticism of President Trump and Vice President Vance. With respect to those criticisms, I believe a valid point has been missed, which I'll explain. I address this because everyone is talking about it; virtually everyone says Trump and Vance were disrespectful and bullied Zelensky. I don't condone bullying, but many have missed the point.
I preface this by noting the setting: the Oval Office, with a visiting president—albeit one at war and facing immense difficulties—in the company of the U.S. president and vice president. This deserves respect and courtesy. Many commented without watching the full interview, understanding the context and nuances, basing conclusions on short online snippets. I initially commented, then deleted it, having only seen part. However, after watching the full interview, I stand by my view: Zelensky was somewhat disrespectful to Trump and Vance.
This heated exchange begins around 39:40. The first 40 minutes were polite and cordial. Trump and Vance were respectful, answering difficult and even antagonistic questions from the press present (though unseen, their presence and questions are audible). Trump stated his alignment with world peace and a resolution to the war.
Then, Zelensky began antagonizing Trump and Vance. A journalist had asked about Poland's post-WWII history under Russian control, and the suggestion that Trump was aligning himself with Putin. Trump responded that he wasn't aligned with anyone, but that being publicly aggressive with Putin before seeking a deal is counterproductive. JD Vance then added his perspective.
The clip I'll show highlights this turning point. (Note: I'll limit footage due to copyright.) The preceding question referenced years of tough talk towards Putin by the U.S., followed by the Ukrainian invasion. Vance suggested diplomacy as a better approach—a valid point. He continued, criticizing the "chest-thumping" approach and emphasizing the importance of American diplomacy.
Zelensky then responded, referencing Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and implying that no one had effectively stopped Putin's actions since then. This was antagonistic, especially given the Oval Office setting. Many commented on Zelensky not wearing a suit; while I find that disrespectful, my own informal attire on this channel reflects my goal of making the law more approachable.
The key is Zelensky's statement in the Oval Office, implying inaction from previous administrations and dismissing diplomacy as ineffective. These antagonistic comments triggered Trump and Vance's responses. His body language—arms folded, defensive—became increasingly confrontational. Trump remained composed, but Vance responded, noting the disrespect of publicly criticizing U.S. efforts. Zelensky then interrupted Vance, further escalating the situation.
Neither Trump nor Vance interrupted Zelensky’s initial criticisms; they waited until he finished. Zelensky’s interruption, however, was disrespectful. He stated that Vance, having never been to Ukraine, couldn’t know their problems. This was argumentative and disrespectful. Vance's response defended the U.S., pointing out Zelensky’s criticism of the U.S. in the Oval Office. Zelensky’s body language remained confrontational.
I'm not condoning bullying, but there are two sides to this. Many missed the point that Zelensky was, in my view, the initial antagonist, provoking a response defending the U.S. Did they go too far? That's for viewers to decide. Watch the full interview.
I conducted a poll asking if Zelensky has the full backing of the UK, as claimed by a Kia Starma. Of 3400 respondents, 83% disagreed. This isn't a scientific poll, but it indicates that universal support isn't a given. Many factors influence public opinion, such as financial aid to Ukraine. I don't intend to delve into the politics, but multiple viewpoints exist. It's mathematically improbable that the entire UK supports Zelensky.
