The sun doesn't shine every day; storms will come. There are times when the nights will be long and dark, and you may feel alone. During these periods, the darkness can seem overwhelming, but don’t let it consume you. Even in your darkest times, even amidst the strongest storms, and when the sun is blotted out, the world may be falling apart, but the darkness cannot extinguish your light—your will, your determination.
When you feel like giving up, don’t. When you think about giving up, don’t. When it looks like you aren't going to make it, keep going. When they tell you that you can’t succeed, ask yourself, "Who are they?" Don’t believe them. You have to be relentless. You may feel that you are doing everything right, giving your all—remember, your all is more than you know. You have more inside of you to give; stop selling yourself short. You will fail, and you will fail many times, but eventually, you will win. That is life. Life without challenges is merely existence. Don’t just exist; go live.
People often want the flame without being willing to touch the fire. Are you willing to set aside what isn’t important to you at this moment? Most people don’t want to go that extra mile. It can be miserable and lonely. If you don’t fail, you aren’t even trying. If you don’t fail, I’ll say it again, you aren't even trying. You have to open your mind; you must free your mind to learn and make real progress.
Everything I've done was to learn how to become a better basketball player—everything. When you embrace this perspective, the world becomes your library, helping you improve your craft. It’s a mistake to always seek comfort, as comfort is the enemy of progress. You need to confront your resistance. As Nietzsche said, "What does not kill you makes you stronger."
Don’t quit before you finish; don’t procrastinate. Someday you might look back and think, "I could have been great." So, where does the switch come from? It’s that drive that allows you to dig a little deeper, to push a little harder. It requires both emotion and logic to reach your maximum potential. Emotion and logic will both encounter limits, and when one fails, you need to rely on the other. When it doesn’t make logical sense to continue, use your emotion—your anger, frustration, and fear—to push onward.
You are here because there’s something inside you that says, "I can do more." This cannot be it; you haven't peaked yet. There’s more in you than you currently express—eye has not seen, ear has not heard. If you challenge yourself, persist, and persevere, it is the process of striving that shapes and forms you. You don’t become a champion merely on the field; you become a champion when no one is watching. You become a champion by doing extra drills, following what your coach says, and by putting in the effort when no one else is around.
What do you do when no one is watching? What do you do when you can take a day off because it seems no one will know the difference? It’s easy for anyone to show up on days they feel motivated, but what about the days they don’t want to get out of bed? Those are the days that will define your life. You don’t stop when you are tired; you stop when you are done. Greatness lies within you, but someone has to push you.
We often talk ourselves out of our true desires out of fear of judgment. People aren't talking about you; if they are, it’s because you’re doing something great. If you're doing something significant, you shouldn’t care what others think. Running away from obstacles often hinders your progress; in fact, it is the obstacles that propel you to the next level. Your character is tested not during moments of success, but when you're faced with adversity.
Understand that your dreams may not materialize in six months or a year, but at some point, they will. As talented as you are, remember to never let life make you forget why you do what you do. People don’t burn out, quit, or underachieve solely due to their actions. They lose their motivation when life causes them to forget their purpose. Know why you do what you do, and go out there every day fighting for it.
The daily grind will be a challenge; you won’t always want to do what needs doing. I have spent years frightened of things that could happen or might not happen. I’ve found myself awake at 3 in the morning, paralyzed by fear—that's the real enemy. So get up, get out into the real world, and confront that fear head-on.
