Hello everyone, I am Shekinah Akina Maranga, and today I am going to perform an open gloving return demonstration.
The use of gloves reduces the risk of contaminating the healthcare worker's hands with blood and other bodily fluids. It also reduces the risk of germ dissemination to the environment, as well as the risk of transmission of microorganisms and harmful pathogens from the healthcare worker to the patient and vice versa.
So, prior to the conduct of the procedure, I have performed thorough hand washing. We must remember that the use of sterile gloves does not replace hand washing, and so we must perform hand hygiene before and after every procedure.
Okay, so here I have prepared my sterile gloves. Ensure that the gloves are of the right size and that the packaging has no tears or stains.
It is important to ensure that the gloves fit well to ensure user comfort and avoid contamination. If the gloves are too big, then it would be harder to hold objects, and it would be easier for germs to get inside the gloves.
Now, if the gloves are too small, then they are most likely to get ripped, or if not, they may cause a decrease in blood flow to the fingertips and may result in pain, numbness, and constraints in finger and hand movements.
Okay, so now I am going to remove the outer wrapper of the package. Do this carefully by peeling off the sides, and be careful not to spill the inside contents to keep the sterility of the gloves.
Grasp the inner package and place it on a clean, dry, flat surface because moisture can contaminate the gloves. The area must be at waist level because any object held below the waist is considered contaminated.
Now, open the inner wrapper. Okay, now identify the left and right glove, and for easier application, we must don the dominant hand first.
So, since I'm right-handed, I am going to don gloves on my right hand first. To do this, I'll have to grasp the cuff of the glove. [Music]
It is important to remember that with bare hands, we can only touch the inside part of the glove to avoid contaminating the glove and ensure its sterility.
Okay, grasp the inside cuff, tuck the thumb in, and glove the right hand.
So now that I'm done donning gloves on my dominant hand, I am going to glove my non-dominant hand. To do that, I'll have to slip my fingers beneath the cuff of the other glove and slip it onto my non-dominant hand.
Okay, so since both of my hands are now gloved, I can arrange the gloves.
Okay, so after doing that, we are going to clasp our hands in front of our body. Okay, hold it away from the body. This is done to avoid accidental touching of non-sterile objects and the front of our uniforms. [Music]
Okay, so now to remove the gloves, all we have to do is first remove the glove of the dominant hand by pinching the glove at the palm area of our hand and remove it.
Okay, and for the non-dominant hand, we are going to slip our finger under the glove or to the inside of the glove and remove it like that.
Okay, and now we can discard this glove. Perform hand hygiene again after doing this procedure.
