ball Chelsea have been quietly going
about their business this season but at
Tottenham on Sunday they edged a seven
goal Thriller and battled back from
being two goals down to show the rest of
the Premier League that not only have
they got the skill they've got the grit
determination and character to battle
back and pick up the points when it
really matters and of course to do that
they need a bit of tactical Nae as well
and one man who's got tactical Nae in
Spades is sunsports tactical Guru Dean
Scoggins Dino as always you have got
five tactical things that fans may not
have noticed from that despairing defeat
for you at your beloved Tottenham on
Sunday yeah it was a bit of a hard watch
but taking the Tottenham hat off and
putting the Tactical one back on there
was a lot a lot for us to get into the
first thing the double Enzo not just one
Enzo two Enzos but Fernandez is the real
key for moresa 100 million pound player
I don't forget and uh with number two
we'll look at his unbelievably good run
you know how much I like unselfish runs
for the Sancho goal and then uh Don't
Cry For Me RG screamer as he screamed in
celebration At His Brilliant goal but
there was this subtle little thing that
he did did that meant the goal was
scored and then Cole Palmer obviously
cold from the penalty spot the best
penalty taker ever we'll get into that
and then look there were a lot of
positives for Spurs despite the result
from a tactical perspective and salanki
was one of them and he gave Co will a
right nightmare afternoon yeah it was an
absolute Thriller of a game din know a
barn Storer I would even say a couple of
karella slips early on you've got a
couple of uh opinions on whether or not
it was the Kit man's blame the boots if
you like but yeah um but but on on the
whole did you feel that was one of those
games where it was you know they're two
tactically intriguing teams and managers
did you feel it was two tactical sort of
juggernauts going up against each other
or was it more one of those sort of old
school thrilling Premier League games
where it's actually a game of mistakes
rather than impressive tactics well I
think both managers deserve a lot of
credit and I know that's not a popular
opinion from Tottenham this morning but
um and cost kogu had a fantastic plan
and he really really I was shocked at
how easily Tottenham broke that Chelsea
setup so let's remind people who haven't
seen it before Chelsea invert a fullback
to create a box in Midfield so a lot of
the time in previous games that's been
Kara from left back coming in other
games it's been Malo Gusto from right
back coming in the last couple of weeks
they've used cedo in that role so as
soon as they see the team Sheet Spurs
know cedo from right back is going to be
the one that inverts so POA cogu had a
brilliant plan but we'll get to the
solution in a second because it was very
very good for moresa but what Spurs did
is had a line of four so sank is the one
pressing sank is a brilliant presser
because he knows which way to force the
ball if there's only one Chelsea player
one side he forces the ball that way
which puts you under pressure then we've
got Sun putting bad AEL Under Pressure
we've got Johnson putting kukara under
pressure and then we've got sa picking
up cedo who's the in inverted player and
then kiches picking up Lavia and then
every time the ball came into Midfield
Spurs nicked it and they were set in
that little trap and and Chelsea were
all over the place Sanchez was all over
the place and Chelsea didn't have that
out ball at all including the one to
Nicholas Jackson where he comes in that
pocket that we've talked about basuma
cut that off but Spurs took a big risk
because the risk was we're leaving Netto
and Palmer over on that right side and
that was amazing work from OD DOI who
was on Palmer one minute and on Netto
the next and then Mickey vaner who was
switching in between players as well but
Spurs took him apart really uh right
Point Number One D know the double Enzo
you love calling players by their first
name I can't do it today because there's
two Enzo exactly that yeah that
infuriates me as you know but moresca
and Fernandez of course which one do you
want to talk about first yeah so it was
it was a moresa switch and what happened
was there was an injury and they called
Sanchez over and they changed it then
and it didn't happen just at half time
when they took off Lavia it happened
before halftime and Enzo Fernandez right
getting the right way around Enzo
Fernandez started to drop back in into
the inside left position to give them an
alternative out ball because
realistically they were two- n down they
could have been three or fournil down
and then maybe if those chances have
been taken by Spurs we'd be having a
very different conversation this morning
but they found a solution and that was
Enzo Fernandez so in the first half he
was dropping in a much deeper position
to give them an alternative out ball
halime they take lavier off and then
they sort of abandon their box shape and
play Fernandez Enzo fernandz and cedo
back in Midfield and they just look more
settled he had the most touches of any
player um he had more forward passes he
was switching the play and he was just
fantastic absolutely fantastic and doo
we'll see his touch map here as well and
that shows something quite interesting
kind of backs up what you're saying
doesn't it yeah and he gets the ball
mainly on the inside left but not just
if you imagine in the beginning he's
meant to be furthest forward of the
Midfield and so you you can get that
most of his touches are in the opposing
half but there's this shape where he's
come deep to collect the ball and he's
given Sanchez and cwell and kukara
another option to get him out of that
scenario so he solved it his movement
off the ball is brilliant his
understanding of what's happening in
game and if you got you're a manager
like Enzo maresa and you can see it you
know we could see it watching the game
and if you you're a manager who can see
that but you still need a player to
carry it out for you and to get you to
that point and uh and Fernandez did it
just brilliantly he he he really is one
of those players I he's showing it going
forward as well right the goal was was
fantastic and he was getting quite a lot
of grief early in his Chelsea Career
wasn't he 105 million pounds and one
thing you've noticed is how much of lots
of the unselfish stuff he was doing on a
previous tactics you spoke about how he
just does a lot of running constantly in
that sort of vertical inside Midfield
Channel just in order to distract other
midfielders do you find that he's he's
sort of most impactful and effective
especially in this game on the ball or
off it this was much more on the ball
and but he did both you know look the
transfer fee is the transfer fee it's
not his fault it's not his fault Chelsea
spent 100 million pounds on him and he
found it difficult to adapt to the
Premier League a little bit but now he's
got a manager and the two of them have
got an understanding between each other
of what they want from a game and you
know he came on in a game earlier in the
season and he beautiful little touch
pass he's you know it's nine goal
involvements in the last six games so
he's not just off the ball obviously
he's doing it on the ball as well but
yeah I mean in the second half as well
especially they had a plan that they
were going to stop a doggy getting
forward and they pinned Netto out on
that side and that meant you know that
Fernandez was switching play it was
fantastic yeah well we'll move on to
point two Dino but one thing I will say
about Fernandez I think Chelsea fans are
absolutely loving him at the moment and
it's I think unless people are watching
tactics exposed other fans of other
Premier League teams still haven't quite
appreciated the value of Fernandez yet
yeah I don't think they'll mind that
he's going under the radar because I

know Fraser forer was having a great day
didn't deserve to concede four but if
you strike the ball like that the
goalkeeper's not got much chance but
really the goal doesn't get scored
without Enzo Fernandez right because
Romero's just gone off so drasin is just
come on a little bit naive from dragas
in maybe but Enzo Fernandez actually
starts the move inside his Zone half
getting the ball off the goalkeeper and
then he plays it wide and he continues
his run right down the middle of the
field three four five occasions down the
middle of the field and then he drags
dragas in out of the way Sano comes
inside and hits it in the far Corner
brilliant so is it fair to say that it's
a mistake from drag Us in there or just
a little bit naive following that that
run because Defenders it's a lot to be
switched onto decoys as well as oh
that's actual danger because if
Fernandez then gets the ball and Dr Dr
hasn't gone with him he gets berated by
an surely yeah I think it is a slight
error that porro and dragin don't really
communicate well enough we'll never know
if it would have happened if Romero
would have stayed on the field or not
but when actually Sancho strikes the
ball you can see that Fernandez is in a
position where he never really wanted it
so dragin should really have followed
the man inside but it's just a clever
run and if you as you say if you see
someone run across you you normally
track them don't you yeah we had this
didn't we last week on tactics exposed
talking about the Arsenal corners and
how it's an awful lot for a Defender
isn't it whose Natural Instincts are to
oh see a player running or an attacker

mentioned it on comms yesterday is that
how fast that game was and you know to
watch it live and that high level you
know a Chelsea player runs across you
into a channel you're going to have to
mark him on yeah exactly yeah right

to lure me into doing any more singing I
appreciate Christmas is coming up uh but
yeah Enzo Fernandez and his goal talk
some more yeah I associate this part
with a batov or an Eric cantar Teddy
sheringham type of player where
everybody's running in one One Direction
and that player knows when to stop yeah
and when that player stops the space
comes to him because everybody else goes
away and so not only as Enzo Fernandez
played the passes switched the play made
the unselfish run joined play together
for Chelsea then when he sees play Go
All in One Direction because Tottenham
quite rightly attracted to Cole Palmer
on the ball y Fernandez thinks I'll stop
I'll wait the space will come to me and
there's a shot just before the ball gets
deflected to him Spurs are a bit unlucky
there from Palmer's cross it gets
deflected to him but he earns that luck
Enzo Fernandez because he waits for the
space and he can see it all in front of
him and it's just game intelligence game
intelligence of a really really high
level yeah it's it's kind of polar
opposite isn't it to sankis go we were
talking before and what a what a goal I
was so impressed with that and the Run
of sank you you highlighted it the run
inside he sort of hovers behind the
defender until right at the last minute
when it's almost telepathic they're
obviously doing it in training him and
Brennan Johnson so much but he gets
there and then increases his speed yeah
is the sort of the polar opposite to
what Lampard and Gerard used to do
steaming into the box to get the end of
stuff where Fernandez like you say it's
the pace of his run just slows down
because no one else is thinking about
him they're just thinking about where
the ball is and you just yeah it all and
Teo verer and Pedro porro are the
Defenders and they get sucked back into
the penalty area and you know and
fernandz just allows them to go and
thinks well and there's two reasons for
it as well one is obviously the goal and
the attacking element but there's also
the other element of if they lose the
ball he's the man who can mop it up
afterwards so it's really high level
real High game intelligence and also we
should give a ha tip to Nicholas Jackson
here for stopping Fernandez getting
booked because he held his shirt on and
you know quite you know excitement the
shirts coming off Jackson held his shirt
on stopped him getting booked might save
him a suspension that yeah exactly and
as well it just sort of gives him the
out doesn't it to to get a book in that
probably helps Chelsea a little bit more
later in the game now I do like that
it's just awareness isn't it
particularly you've got to be aware as
well of players over his shoulder I uh
he very impressive right Cole Palmer now
I'm not quite sure about this you've
said he's the best penalty taker ever
you did put a question mark on the notes
to be fair but knowing you as I do it
feels like you think that he is well you
look at you look at him when he he did
an Instagram interview and he was asking
Messi you know they're asking him Messi
or Ronaldo and you know Beckham more
skulls and different questions and then
they asked him who would you uh who
would you choose to take a penalty for
your life and he said himself and quite
frankly if it's one for me I'll get him
to take it as well please um because
it's just you know he's 12 and 12 in the
Premier League it's the most penalties
100% record that's ever been he's
overtaken the liks of latia and Shir and
those players you really associate I
think it was yay Tor who also had a very
very high record he scored them all for
England you know You' have to ask him
how many years it's been since he missed
one um but it's just so good and the
reason it's so good is because the Run
Up's always the same so the goalkeeper's
got no idea yeah no idea whatsoever
doesn't give him a clue strikes the ball
and I also think and this in the nicest
possible way he's not under any pressure
because his brain doesn't work like that
yeah he he's just just and the whole you
know Cole Palmer is he doesn't think
what happens if I'm going to miss it
he's just going to score yeah yeah yeah
he doesn't he doesn't seem to get in his
head I often find out with Harry Kane as
well when Harry Kane approaches a
penalty he looks exactly the same from
the moment he starts his run up to the
moment his foot connects with the ball
at whatever Pace it's going whatever
corner it's going in or down the middle
exactly that exactly that and it's not
um and it's not luck let's let's give
you know the guy and the good penalty
takers an enormous amount of credit you
know there's quite a lot of people
behind that goal there's quite a lot of
pressure going on Fraser force is not a
small guy you know and yet he's not
looking at him he's looking at the ball
his angle of his run up is the same
every time and as you say the the foot
position of his right foot that he
plants is the same for the ball that he
puts in the corner as it was for the
panenka yeah and as well when when
you're hitting the ball at that much
Pace that's the key as I always fine
with Kane you see a lot of the time a
goalkeeper might go the right way but
chances are it's it's going in because
it's the ability
to place your right foot the same and
then in the time that the go because
obviously then your body has to do
different stuff after your foots planted
but in the time it would take a
goalkeeper to read it they're hitting
the ball with such Pace that it doesn't
matter even if they can see any little
sign it's a split second and they're
whacking it with such pace and accuracy
that it's in before they've had a chance
absolutely you know and goalkeepers
would have done all the research you
know and his graphic is the reason it's
another reason it's so difficult to save
them from him is because he just goes
anywhere yeah he just makes his mind up
right I'm going to put it here and you
know there was the The Cheeky element of
the panenka great because forers
thinking I've got to go early yeah
because otherwise I'm going to get
nowhere near it and then Palmer's going
to I've done it exactly that there's
always that as well whenever whenever
players take a penalty a second time in
a game there's always that oh will he go
the same way or different so I always
going blast it down the middle blast I
know he didn't blast it but yeah look
best penalty taker ever look I'm I'd
like to see one better yeah do you think
he's the sort of player Palmer if he
misses one he strikes me as a sort of
player if he misses one he just shrugs
and it's like it never happened and
he'll just crack on next well maybe
we'll see if if if he misses one yeah
right final Point Dino Levi Co will we
spoke about him before but you did want
to talk about one good thing that
Tottenham did Dominic salanki in
particular we've spoken before on
tactics exposed about Co will and how
effective he is how he's often has the
most touches of any Chelsea player on
the pitch and with those direct passes
through the middle to the players in the
attacking positions either Jackson
coming in deep or Cole Palmer just so
Chelsea have got that bit quicker time
he surveys things then he gets into the
danger area sanki though stopped Co will
from doing that on the whole he really
did he I mean he didn't deserve to be on
the losing side it wasn't just the only
thing Spurs did did right let's let's be
fair Spurs had a very good start to the
game and should have been out of sight
quite frankly um but credit Chelsea for
changing it up but so that's another
another reason why Church Spurs broke
that box Midfield that we talked about
and as I said Enzo Fernandez solved it
but salanki knows where he's going to go
and his pressing is what it's all about
he leads from the front and he knows
where they're going to be and he you
know he pushes players in One Direction
if he knows that there's three Tottenham
players one side he'll Force the play
that way if he knows it's the other way
goes the other way he gave cowi a
nightmare he gave Badd a sheeld a
nightmare off the ball and that's what
sprung Spurs forward in on all those
early attacks but we should talk about
the goal as well because that run is
just Sensational yeah I might have uh I
might sort of stolen the march on that
earlier in Yeah you mentioned the
brilliant finish in the telepath
telepathy telepathy can I say that word
between Johnson and sanki um but for me
it's about the run and look again you're
going to get fed up of this with me
talking about runs off the ball and how
clever and how important it is but it's
such a vital part of the game and if you
watch from behind Okay salanki the ball
goes wide after kukara slips and Johnson
Nicks it and salanki looks to his left
and he thinks I'm taking Co whe That Way
co will looks over his shoulder and he
he's got to follow salanki because if
the ball comes across he's got to block
the cross and then he goes that way
salanki creates this area at the front
post where Johnson then knows that's
where I'm going to put it doesn't even
look where salanki is and then salanki
at the last minute darts across in front
of him cwell can do nothing it's
Sensational forward play well well it
really is isn't it cuz cwell what more
can he do he's trying to focus on he's
as he's running this way he's trying to
focus on the ball over there and be
aware of the player over his right
shoulder it's impossible for him and the
timing is so good as well that if I I
saw a couple of people yesterday say
that coell should have made contact but
the timing from salanki was so good if
he makes contact a penalty and probably
a red as well but they must do they must
him and Johnson sank must do that in
training mustn't they because there's
there was not enough time it wasn't like
Johnson's put the ball in then sanky
judged it it was bang bang I'm gone
almost at the same time the ball come in
that must be a train but that's the an
tactic that's that is an ball for what
people who like to use that phrase it is
balls in those inside channels and fast
crosses and so they'll do that all the
time and it and it was brilliant it was
absolutely brilliant and actually if
there had been a better delivery to him
from on a one later on he would have
scored again from a similar outward
inward Dart and it's a zigzag run or a
big curved run however you want to look
at it and for a Defender yeah Co will be
having nightmares about him from the
press and from the Run uh just to wrap
up while we're on this salanki point din
know Mark karella doing these ones as
he's on the way over to blame the kit
man aftering his hair after one of his
slips his second of the game led to a
Tottenham goal but you think think that
was more totman's press which included
sanki rather than karella having his
Astros on yeah I mean he did have long
studs on you know he had I saw one of
the pictures where he had long studs on
and and it actually what happened was he
put his foot down on the outside of his
Boot and therefore he slipped you know
and that was cuz he was under pressure
like look he's a bit unlucky I think
he's more unlucky with the second one
because that that was a slip but he's in
a bad position Spurs have put him under
pressure and slip or no slip Johnson was
right on him to slip or not to slip that
is the question right Doo to wrap up
then lot of talk after that game about
an in or out and Chelsea are they in the
title race brief answers from you on
both of those things I'm not going there
on an I'll be here all day um Chelsea in
the title race or not um they've got to
be they've got to be because this time
they've got a real real issue that they
were given by Spurs and really good
tactics where Spurs broke them apart at
the beginning and they found a way and
if they continue to find a way they are
in the conversation
