Well, today I want to speak part two of a message I started a few weeks back, and it is entitled, "Are You a Disciple?" Which sounds a bit confronting, but it's based from the passage in Matthew 28, Jesus' last words, where he said, "Go into all the world." This was the mandate. This is our mandate. And make Disciples. That was very underwhelming. If you have a voice, let's try together around the world. Go into all the world and make Disciples. Amen.
And the real question should be, "Okay, well yes, Lord, but then is is is is is is it working?" I mean, is that what I'm making? Is that even who I am? And we talked in the first part of this message, which was, now, it's now on YouTube. You can watch that if you have not seen it on "Are You a Disciple?" about how discipleship, if I were to simply define it, it's intentional, it's relational, and it's transformational.
Meaning, it's intentional. You don't, you can't accidentally wake up and stumble into discipleship. "Oh my gosh, I'm a disciple. How did that happen?" Does not happen like that. It's intentional choices you've made. You've made a choice, even though your feelings felt like sleeping, you decided to get up and come into the house of the Lord. Intentional choices that actually engage you on the journey of following Jesus. You can't accidentally, blindly stumble your way into following. You have to make a choice to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow him. So, well done for at least choosing the path, but it is intentional.
It's also relational, meaning you can't get discipled in a vacuum. I know people can sometimes be difficult. Don't point or poke. Just look ahead. But here's the reality. I get recharged in my own space. I need my own time. Anybody else like me? You need your own space. So, you can recharge on your own, but you cannot grow on your own. Because God hardwired growth into the annoying people surrounding you. Because there is something about iron sharpening iron, and I'm not too excited about the strategy, either, but I'm not God. He is. He decided it is not good for man to be alone, and that is not just a marriage verse, that is a community verse, that is a life verse, that isolation will kill you. Discipleship is literally impossible if it's just you by yourself.
It is intentional, it is relational, which is why community is important, which is why church is important. It is why connect group is important. This is why gatherings are important. And number three, it's transformational. Meaning, at some point on the journey, you need to be able to look back and go, "Something has changed." I mean, if you're a disciple and nothing has changed, who are you following? Because the God who says, "Follow me," says, "I will not only take you, I will make you." "Follow me and I will make you." There's a transformation in the journey, and even though it's not perfect and it's far from flawless, there is transformation. Jesus said that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name. Meaning, it's not just a turning around, there's actually a reducing in the markers. When someone had cancer and they go into remission, that's great news, because even though it's still there, it's heading in the right direction. The question is, is your faith heading in the right direction? That's what Jesus said, that repentance and remission of sin should be preached in his name. Meaning, there is a transformational edge to this thing called discipleship.
So, we looked at the, those three simple markers. Again, they're available on YouTube if you want to watch that message if you missed it. But I want to talk about the second half of that verse, because Jesus said in Matthew 28, he said, "Go into all the world, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Do you know the first thing Jesus said when we like, "Go and make disciples. How do we do that, Lord? What's the recipe?" He said, "Let me tell you the first thing. Baptize them."
In a couple of weeks, Easter's around the corner, depending on what time you're watching this video. But we're going to have water baptisms all around the world in the smallest to the largest campuses and nations, and it is going to be a moving, life-changing, defining experience, and literally over a thousand people will be water baptized around the world, probably closer to two, maybe three. And you're like, "What's the significance of that?" It is not just a religious sacrament because it's Easter. Water baptism is something I want to spend a few minutes talking about now, because it is the first thing Jesus said after he said, "Make disciples." And I realize in maybe 20 years of doing this and since we started Kingdom City, I don't think there's been a Sunday that I actually dedicated to teaching on water baptism. I've done midweek teachings, I've done videos, I've done all these little different things, but this is really important, because if you have signed up to be water baptized, this is going to encourage you and it's going to cement why you're doing what you're doing. If you've already been water baptized many years ago, this will awaken the power of the conviction that you had when you did what you did. And if you've never been baptized as a believer, this might hopefully give you something to genuinely think about, because it is not too late. In every location, there's QR codes you can scan, you can sign up, talk to your pastor. It's different in every location, but it is going to be a life-changing Easter, but it's not [snorts] enough just to do it. It's more important to know why you're doing it and the conviction behind it.
So, let me start by saying this when we talk about water baptism, or being baptized in water. It is not a requirement for salvation. It is, however, the fruit of salvation. You're not saved in the H2O. But everyone who is saved was commanded. It's not a suggestion. If you like spas or swimming, be baptized. No, it is actually a commandment that we are to be baptized in water, and it is such a commandment that Jesus himself led the way by example. And he was baptized as a 30-year-old man, led the way by personal example, and believers have followed ever since. The new church, the early church in Acts, played this out as a normal pattern. The Ethiopian eunuch, Paul the Apostle, Cornelius, Lydia, the Philippian jailer are just some of those who are specifically mentioned as people who having found Christ, went to the closest pool of water and got baptized in water, because it is the fruit of a life radically changed that says, "I want to follow Jesus." And if that is not enough, maybe the most well-known verse in the early church, where 3,000 were added. The Bible says, if you read it, 3,000 were saved and baptized. That is a mass baptism like we've never seen. 3,000 people didn't just come to the front of the auditorium to say yes to Jesus. 3,000 then went to the closest body of water and actually all got baptized in water.
And so, let's talk about it for a second. Water baptism is, if I could distill it, would be three simple things. Number one, it's a personal decision. Everyone say personal. Say it's my choice. It's regardless of your family of origin, regardless of your journey, it has to be a personal decision. I'm aware that there are people here who had grew up maybe in a setting like mine. We went to an Orthodox church, and I'm grateful. I honor any church and any kind of you know, sincere believers that did whatever they did. I totally, I'm good with that. I got baptized as an infant. It's called infant baptism. Some of you may relate, some of you may understand. And that was wonderful. I think God honors that. I have no issue. I don't want to dishonor any tradition. However, that is not the same thing as this. If you have any issues, please email david.stora@kingdomcity.com. Send all your arguments and websites to him. Because here's what I want to tell you. That decision was not mine. It was my parents. No priest rang me. I was 3 months old. So, I think it's wonderful. You know, when we should dedicate children. We should pray for households. It's a wonderful thing to do. But that is not the same as a believer making their own personal choice to say, "I will follow Jesus."
Why is that significant? Because God has no grandchildren. He only has children, sons and daughters. And when you and I, you know, I've been told by many people, "Oh, wait till you become a grandparent." Jemima occasionally accuses me of being a grandfather to my own sons. She says, "You're so soft with them." I said, "No, I'm kind. I'm a Christian." And so, we stand and have a non-Christian fight. But I'll tell you something. I can't wait to be a grandfather. I mean, I can. Caleb, Zeke, wait. I can wait. You can wait. We should all wait. But God is not a grandfather, because if you raise children, your job as a parent is to lead them to the place where they can make their own decision for Jesus. And ultimately, he wants to relate to everyone as a son or daughter. So, if you made a decision for your child, that's wonderful. And I hope and I'm sure the Lord answered some of those prayers. However, when you become an adult, you, Jesus was not baptized as an infant. As a 30-year-old man, he decided, "I am going to be baptized in water because it's a personal decision." So, as much as it was a wonderful thing, I was in a godly home and raised by great parents, when I came to the, at an early age to make a decision to follow Jesus, I had to make my own personal decision and I think it, I was 13 or 14 when I got baptized in water. And this time, it was not in a little font with a little few drops. There you go, that's me. Very scared. Not sure what these three strong white men were about to do to me, but I made a choice to follow Jesus and I stand by it. Wasn't my parents' decision, wasn't my pastor's decision, wasn't a priest's decision, wasn't my peers' decision.
So, I would encourage you if you are in that category like me and you thought, "Yeah, I don't need to because it wasn't your decision." Have you, and I'm talking to everybody around the world now, have you made a decision, a personal decision that you made, not your parents, not in a ceremony, you made a choice to say, "I will follow Jesus." If you've done that, wonderful. If you've not done that, it's not. And some people like, you know, I really want to get baptized again. You know what? Talk to your pastor. We're not going to say no. You shouldn't be water baptized every week. Some people get saved every week. You know, they raise their hand and they commit their life to Christ 'cause they had a bad week. You know, I don't want to ever judge that. But if there's a significant shift in your life and you genuinely go, "You know what? I, I don't think I've made this decision with the conviction and the recognition of what I've actually done." Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead and do it. We're not encouraging you do it weekly, but I am saying if this is not a personal decision you've made, make the personal decision. It's not a suggestion, it's a commandment. So, this personal decision is genuine obedience of a disciple.
Number two, it's a public declaration. It's a personal decision of a public declaration. Meaning, you're not ashamed of the gospel of his name. It is the power of God unto salvation. Jesus said, "If you're ashamed of me, I'll be ashamed of you before my father in heaven." There are some people who've got very tricky situations and they, they don't know how to handle it. I understand that. But I will say this, there is a visual re-enactment in a sense, the prophetic power of going under the water and coming back up. Water baptism literally enacts the gospel because going under the water is identifying with Christ's death and burial and rising from the water because we do allow you to come up, it's identifying with his resurrection. And I want to read Colossians 2, just four verses, so you can hear the power of the gospel in scripture. Says, "For you were buried with Christ when you were, when you were, all around the world, when you were baptized. And with him, you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God who raised Christ from the dead. You were dead because of your sins and because of your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly." Everyone say publicly. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. This is a public declaration by us to a savior who already publicly disarmed the enemy at Calvary. It is a joy to say, "God, I want to be unashamed that this is not just a private decision. It's personal, but it's not private." It's personal and it is a public declaration. I mean, you can be in front of two or three people. You could be in front of two or 300 people. Last year in our Perth locations, we combined and we baptized almost 500 people in the Swan River. Now, that is amazing, right? That's as public as you can get. If you're around the world wondering, "Where is the Swan River?" In Perth, Western Australia, this is as landmark a space as you can get. Some of the countries you're in, I would not suggest you get baptized in the rivers in your nations. I've seen them. Uh, you may not come up. Um, but this was a public declaration. It, I think it made national news on the day. They said it was the largest baptism of people in one church in one city, I think in Australia's history. We didn't do it for records. We did it because there was enough disciples saying, "I want to make a personal decision and I want it to be a public declaration. Christ publicly died for me. I'll publicly be baptized in him, with him, and for him." It is a public declaration that I am not ashamed of the gospel of his name. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. Some of you, as I'm speaking, you're like, "I got to do this." Do it. Scan, sign up, do it. I'm telling you something will change. We got so many stories of testimonies of when people got water baptized, how bondages were broken or they got healed or they got filled with the Holy Ghost. I don't know, but we don't do it for those reasons. We do it because we want to obey the discipler himself who said, "Make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit."
And number three, it's a permanent delineation. This is a personal decision. It is a public declaration. And it is a permanent delineation. What does that mean? Well, there's a line in the sand when you say, "I am going to be baptized in water because I am not just a loose congregational attendant. I'm a follower of Jesus." And there's a line in the sand that I really believe for some of us who say yes to this, it is going to be a marker that you will look back on. I would like to tell you that after that 14-year-old experience I had, I have never struggled, I have never sinned, and I never had a, that would be a complete lie. However, my course was set. My path was set. Even when I didn't take it seriously, God did. Maybe this decision is going to be a marker where you say, "God, I just want to honor you. I want to honor your word. I want this water baptism to mark a decisive break with my old life and I want it to be a public declaration of a confessed allegiance to you as my Lord, as my savior." And this year, all around the world in every location, whether it's small or large, whether it's little hidden or whether it's in the, in the, in the biggest river of your city, let's make this personal decision. Let's make this a public declaration. And let's make this a permanent delineation. In fact, you could say that this personal decision is a public declaration of a permanent delineation. This personal decision is a public declaration of a permanent delineation.
So, the real question is, if you haven't been baptized in water as a believer, as an adult, as someone who made their own choice, why? Generally speaking, people will have three reasons. Number one, it's either innocent ignorance, which is very forgivable and hopefully today now you know. You know it's a scripture. You know it's, I mean, there's way more depth that we could go into. But let ignorance be removed today because some of us genuinely just didn't know and that's okay. We all learn. But number two, it could be prideful resistance, which I hope no one would be in that category because pride is just a horrible thing to have as a believer. And some people like, "No, I don't want to do that because firstly, it's embarrassing." You don't think it was embarrassing for holy God to die naked upon a stained cross? Oh, but if I get water baptized, I'm a connect leader. People think, "Man, I haven't, I've disobeyed all this time." The only thing worse than being wrong is staying wrong. And pride will keep you anchored where ignorance led you. Don't allow any of that. You're like, "I'm old. I'm 60. I don't really want to get into my T-shirt and shorts and go to some river or some pool." Listen, I don't know how comfortable it was for God to confine himself to flesh and die upon a cross. But just hopefully, if you're senior, I want to encourage you that our pastors are very kind. We'll actually be very gentle. It's not painful. I'm actually believing it'll be powerful. I'm believing it'll be a liberating moment that the young and the old, whether you're a teenager or you're an octogenarian, it doesn't matter how old [snorts] you are, God is looking for children, not grandchildren. He's looking for followers.
And number three, maybe lukewarm indifference might be the other reason. Which is really tragic because it's basically someone saying, "Yeah, I said yes to God. I just didn't want to go to hell. But though I don't really want to follow him." Which is why he said make disciples. Meaning the sign that you actually have a real follower is someone who doesn't just want to escape hell, but bring heaven. Someone who doesn't just want to stay away from the consequence of their sin, but actually wants to follow the Lord. See, when you say, "I'm willing to be baptized in Christ. I want to go through this wonderful, powerful, personal, public sacrament." It is telling everybody, "I'm not lukewarm about this. Oh, I, I've got flaws. I've got challenges, but I'm not lukewarm about this. Nothing worse than being a Christ follower who doesn't actually follow. A Christian in name, but not a Christ follower in nature." So, I want to encourage you. Hopefully, there's no one around the world listening that falls into category two or three. Maybe it's category one, but today the altar call is not run to the front, but talk to someone. Sign up. Say, "You know what? I'm going to make the decision. I'm going to draw a line in the sand. And who knows what the Lord will do in your life? I'm believing this Easter it'll be a incredibly significant shift for you, and it would mark a shift for your family as well. In Jesus name. Amen."
Well, there's the decision you need to make, which is this moment. But then there's the direction you need to take, which is the lifestyle following the moment. And you know, everything Jesus says is layered. How many enjoying the connect group studies on the parable of Jesus right now around the world? You know, I love it because we've already had feedback. >> [laughter] >> I don't agree with what this person said about this parable. I'm like, "Oh, wow. This is on. This is awesome." And you know what? I love it. I'll tell you why. Because parables are like diamonds. Every angle you look at it, there's a different glow, there's a radiance. And, and there's so many ways to hear what the Lord is saying and wrestle with the levels of revelation that can enrich your life. So, I say bring it on. Look at it, discuss it, digest it, and talk about it.
Well, the same is true of what Jesus said here. He said, "Go into all the world and make disciples." And then he said the phrase we've just talked about, "baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit." And the problem is if we only look at it at one level, we only grab the moment, but we miss the lifestyle. The moment is the baptism. The moment is that act that's going to happen in Easter. It is powerful, but it, that's a moment that should lead. There's the decision we make and there's the direction we take. The direction follows the decision. And Jesus was saying, "It's not just a disciple who goes through the waters of baptism."
And the reason you understand layers is if you understand the words used. He said, "Baptizing them." The key word baptizing, there's two Greek words for baptizing. Bapto, which means to dip. And baptizo, which means to immerse, submerge, totally overwhelm. The word used for baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit is baptizo, which means here's what Jesus was saying. When you make a disciple, immerse them, submerge them. Sadly, some people have taken that to become some religious debate about whether you put them fully under the water or slightly under the water. And that's not really the main purpose of that the point. I'm into full immersion. However, I will say this, the seriously significant part of this verse is Jesus saying, "When you make a disciple, at one level, yes, baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. But really baptizo them. Immerse them. Submerge them. Drench them in who I am. Drench them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit."
The, the word name is also significant because often when we say the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, we think of it as a way to close the prayer. "Lord, we baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit." And it's a wonderful way to pray. I pray that way. It's all good. However, in the Bible, name wasn't just your label. Name was your nature. When people name their children, you look up the meaning of the name because it is significant. I don't know if you know what your name means. Do you know what your name means? Uh, you should know. And that's hopefully your nature. If it's a bad one, change it. I mean, I don't want to be called bitter waters or supplanter. I mean, this is not really on my notes now, but there's something about your name that is so powerful. My name Mark, that means mighty warrior. Oh, yeah. You're looking at him. Mighty warrior. My middle name Anand means joyful. So, I'm a joyful mighty warrior. I smile and I laugh as I step on the enemy's neck. I thought, "That's good. I'm a joyful warrior." My mommy said, "You're a joyful warrior." Mark Anand means I'm, I'm a, I'm I've got the strength of the Lord in me and I'm taking ground. And then I said, "What does my surname mean?" I was curious. Varghese, this comes from the root word George, which actually means farmer. I thought, "Farmer, boring. I hate farming. I don't like gardening." Until I realized a farmer is someone who sows seeds. A farmer is someone who scatters. The kingdom of God is like a farmer who took seed and he threw it all over the world. And I realized I'm a joyful warrior who's scattering seed. So now, my name isn't a label that distinguishes me from someone next to me. My name is my nature. That's why when Saul's nature changed, they changed his name to Paul. When Jacob's nature changed, they changed his name to Israel. That's why when you realize what you are, who you are, your name is powerful. Your name has life. Find out what it means and say, "God, let it be my destiny."
So, why am I telling you that? Because when Jesus said, "Go into all the world and make disciples, baptizing them in the name." He was saying, "Baptize them. Immerse them in the nature." 'Cause your name is your nature. When we named Caleb, Caleb, the Lord gave me the name Caleb. I didn't even know if I liked the name. >> [music] >> I'm like, "Caleb." And then I looked to what it mean. Means wholehearted, all in, passionate. And now, you know my son? His name is his nature. I want to tell you something. When we are immersed in the nature of the Father. When we are immersed in the nature of the Son. When we are immersed in the nature of the Holy Spirit, you have a disciple. Go into all the world and make disciples, immersing them, overwhelming them, submerging them. What would it be like in Kingdom City if every person right now said, "God, immerse me. Not just I don't want to be a bapto Christian. I want to be a baptizo Christian. I don't want to be a Christian who sometimes just have We don't need any more bapto Christians. We need baptizo Christians. Immersed in the nature. Not Sunday Christians. Not Easter and Christmas Christians. Not occasional say grace at meals Christians. We need Christians who say, 'God, immerse me in this crazy world that is all over the place. Immerse me in your nature. Soak me in you.'"
Do you know when you take a cucumber, the humble cucumber, and you [music] bapto, you just dipped it in vinegar? You know what you have? A sour cucumber. We have a lot of sour cucumber Christians. Just dipped in one song. Dipped in one sermon. Dipped in one prayer. Dipped in occasional following. Dipped in sometimes Christianity. And we think, "Well, this God thing doesn't work." Well, the reason you're a sour cucumber is 'cause you've only been baptoed. And yet the word is baptizo. You take that same cucumber and you immerse it in vinegar. Don't just dip it. You soak it. You put it in the jar, close the thing, and let it sit there. Hour, hour, hour. Minute. You let it soak in there. You know what happens to the cucumber? It becomes a pickle. I don't know if you like pickles, but I'll tell you something. It's no longer a cucumber. And when you are immersed in the nature of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, your very nature changes. [music] You're not just a sour version of your other old self, a religious version of your old self. There's a transformation that changes. There's a radical shift that happens. Your nature changes. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. All things have passed away. Behold, all things become new. If any man, if any cucumber be in vinegar, he is a new creation. All things have passed away. Welcome the pickle. And you know the thing about once you're a pickle? Have you ever seen a pickle? A pickle can never again become a cucumber. A pickle can, you cannot reverse the effect of God truly changing your DNA. [music] That is why if no other decision is made today, Lord, make me one who is immersed in the nature. Immersed in the nature of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
And now you realize it wasn't just a moment. It was a lifestyle that Jesus was talking about. He was talking about two things at once. The best way to understand it is a wedding and a marriage. How many realize the wedding is not the marriage? All the married people are just like putting their heads down. I've met so many people who so stressed about their wedding. Got so anxious. Mainly the brides. I just, I'm just going to say it as it is. That's what I've done this whole sermon. I mean, it's a bad thing when guys don't care. But in this case, it's a good thing. Because years from now, nobody thinks about your wedding day except you. And the anxiety, stress, and worry that went into the moment. I mean, I, I understand. But it's a moment. What's the point of having a wonderful wedding and a terrible marriage? And yet, if all the energy goes into the wedding and none of it goes into the marriage, Jesus is saying, "Listen, there's, there's two layers happening here. There's the moment and then there's the lifestyle of being immersed in the nature of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." And do you know what a wedding is? A wedding, that moment, that water baptism moment. Any wedding is a personal decision. It is a public declaration of a permanent delineation. That's what a marriage is. That's what a wedding is. But then the marriage is everything that follows.
So, here's the challenge. Some of us have been enjoying God without having had a wedding. Correct it this Easter. Others of us, we got [music] dunked decades ago, but we're not immersed at all. Well, I was baptized when I was 14. How's the immersion? Are you just a sour cucumber? Or has there been transformation that is changing your very DNA? And that is why today everybody gets to respond. If you've already been baptized in water, that's wonderful. The question [music] is, get fully immersed in his nature. But if you've never been baptized in water, there's no condemnation. There's no shame. Join the thousands, the hundreds, even the tens in your city, >> [music] >> and make this Easter the most memorable Easter you have ever had in your life. >> [music] >> Why don't we all stand to our feet? I love reading this verse and saying, "God, I thank you that your command was to make disciples wholly [snorts] immersing them in the nature of your presence, the nature of the Father, nature of the Son." In a moment, pastors in every country and [music] location are going to get an opportunity to invite you [music] to make the most important decision you can make. And that is the decision to invite Jesus Christ [music] to be your savior, to be your lord, that you would make a choice to follow him. And if you've never made that decision, this is the most important decision you can ever make. But to everyone who has made the decision, let the fruit of it be obedience. Where we sing, "I will follow you. Oh God, I'll follow you in the public declaration. I will make my own personal decision >> [music] >> of a genuine permanent delineation." It doesn't invalidate your old baptism. It doesn't invalidate what your parents did as a kid. Don't believe those lies. That's just pride manifested in religion. Just say, "God, I choose to follow you myself. As for me, 'cause one day I'll stand before you alone. No parent will be there. No pastor will be there. No spouse will be there. No friend will be there. It'll be me and you. I make a choice to follow you." And for the countless thousands around the world right now who've already made that choice, here's the challenge of today's word. Part two of Are You a Disciple? Why don't you make this year the year you are immersed in his nature? Submerged in his nature. Lord, there's areas that Lord, you need to >> [music] >> totally overwhelm me and Lord, you need to penetrate my DNA. You need to literally allow me to soak in your presence. Immerse, baptizo, so God that I would truly be a person who is radically changed [music] and transformed. So, I don't know what it is that you are believing for. Maybe it's your circumstances right now, [music] but maybe it's a lot more personal. Maybe you're going through things right now. Can you lift your hands towards heaven? All across the world. [music] Wow, from Mexico to Auckland, from Perth to London, right across Malaysia, right across Africa. No matter where you are, everyone in Dubai, in our home groups right now, in Canegrowers, can we decide, [music] if you are a believer, that I'm going to be fully immersed, that I'm going to be totally overwhelmed and drenched in the mighty power of God? >> [music] >> We're going to sing this song, "Come, Holy Spirit." It's an invitation. Not a little dabble, not a little drop, not a little sprinkle. Flow like a torrent, like a waterfall, like your wonderful presence only can do.
