At the far end of a quiet village, an old man lived alone. In a small, old but neat house, everyone in the village knew him. A gentle smile was always on his face. No one had ever seen him angry or sad.
Every morning, he would sit in his yard, enjoy the warmth of the sunlight, listen to the birds, and slowly sip his tea. It felt as if he had learned to love every small moment of life.
One day, his granddaughter came from the city to visit him. She was very happy to see her grandfather after such a long time. But after spending a few days with him, she noticed something unusual. Her grandfather was always cheerful. He lived a very simple life in a small house without much comfort. Yet, there was a strange peace on his face.
One evening, the old man took her for a walk near the river beside the village. The sun was slowly setting, and the red light was reflecting on the calm water. A gentle breeze was blowing, and the whole place felt peaceful and quiet. They sat down by the river and silently enjoyed the beautiful moment.
After a while, the granddaughter looked at him and said, "Grandpa, can I ask you something?"
The old man smiled softly and said, "Of course, my child."
"How are you always so happy? I've never seen you sad. We have everything. Money, a big house, anything we need, we get it. But still, sometimes I feel very alone. It feels like something is missing, but I don't know what it is. Why can't I enjoy life the way you do?"
Hearing her words, the old man stayed silent for a moment. He looked at the calm river as if old memories were returning to his mind. Then he spoke slowly.
"So, you want to know how I stay happy all the time? Then you'll have to listen to a story from my childhood."
"When I was as young as you, our condition was very poor, my child. We lived in a tiny little hut. My father worked as a day laborer, and my mother did household chores and took care of the cows. There were many days when we couldn't even eat a full meal. Since childhood, I had a strong desire to study. I used to stand in front of the village school and watch other boys reading and going to class. I wished I could carry books like them and go to school too. But our family was in such a difficult situation that this dream remained only a dream. At a very young age, I had to go out to find work. I used to think that if I could earn a lot of money one day, all my problems would disappear. I would live happily, and I would make my parents happy too."
"One day, I went to a wealthy businessman in the village to ask for a job. The man was very rich. He had a big house, a lot of land. I stood in front of him nervously and said, 'Sir, I want to work. I will do any kind of work.' The businessman felt sympathy for me and allowed me to stay for small tasks. That was where my journey began. I worked very hard. I woke up early in the morning and worked until late at night. At that time, I had only one thought in my mind: one day, I would earn a lot of money. Then there would be no more suffering, and I would finally be truly happy."
"I worked for that rich businessman for many years. His house was very big, and he had no shortage of money. There were expensive things everywhere in the house. When I was young, I used to look at all this and think, 'This man must be the happiest person in the world.' But slowly, I began to notice something. Even though he had so much money, there was no smile on his face. He would sit quietly for long hours all alone. I could always see a kind of sadness in his eyes."
"One day, I gathered the courage to ask another worker, 'Why does our master always look so quiet and sad?' The man replied, 'His wife left him. She took their children and went away. Now he lives alone in this big house.'"
"Hearing this, I was very surprised. I started thinking: a man who has so much money, such a big house, and everything in life, if he can still be lonely and unhappy, then can money really make a person happy? That day became the beginning of a big change in my life. I slowly began to understand that happiness is not found in money or big houses. If the mind is not peaceful, if there is no joy inside the heart, a person can feel lonely even after having everything."
"From then on, I started looking at my life differently. I began waking up very early in the morning. In the quiet village environment, I would go for a short walk and sit silently for some time. Slowly, I started practicing meditation. It brought peace to my mind. For a while, I could forget the struggles and hardships of life. I learned to realize that I had my parents, and they loved me. We had a small home. Maybe we didn't have much, but even what we had was more than what many others had. Going for a walk every morning, sitting quietly in meditation, and feeling grateful for what I had. These small habits slowly began to change my life. I found a new purpose to live. That was when I truly understood real peace does not come from outside. It slowly grows from within."
"Listen, my child. Life will not always go the way we want. Sometimes happiness will come, and sometimes sadness will come. But if your mind is peaceful, you can still find little moments of happiness even during difficult times. You told me that you have everything in life. But happiness does not live in things. A big house and money are important, yes, but they alone cannot give a person peace. True peace comes from within. If you truly want to be happy, you must first learn to calm your mind. Everything in life will not always be in your favor. Sometimes you will feel lonely. Sometimes your heart will feel heavy. But even in those moments, you must learn to find your own kind of happiness."
"Try to wake up early every morning. Go for a short walk. Spend some quiet time with yourself. Keep your mind calm. Slowly, you will feel a kind of peace growing inside you. And then, even the smallest moments in life will begin to feel beautiful."
