It's Medicos. Is perfection Alice with a new mnemonic on hairy cell leukemia. After talking about hairy cell leukemia in the previous video, let's talk about a mnemonic, how to memorize it. [Music]
So here's the mnemonic: just one word, TRAP. Because these cells stain positive for TRAP, or tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. The cells are trapped in the bone marrow, leading to dry tap on aspiration. Also, the dry tap is due to bone marrow fibrosis. The cells are trapped in the splenic red pulp, leading to splenomegaly. They are trapped, so they cannot go to the lymph nodes; that's why there is no lymph adenopathy in hairy cell leukemia, or rare cases of lymph adenopathy, to be specific. That's it, TRAP. That's why I drew this ancient cave man trapped in a prison.
Now, here you know the TRAP mnemonic. Let's add other mnemonics. So we will draw four hairy cells and draw the B letter inside every one of them. So, first one: why B here? Because the hairy cell is a B lymphocyte. How about this one: B-RAF mutation. That's why we can treat hairy cell leukemia with B-RAF inhibitors, such as the mo raffinate. B here for cladribine for treatment of hairy cell leukemia. B here: bone-marrow fibrosis, which is evident in hairy cell leukemia; that's why we get a dry tap.
