But from the book of 2 Corinthians chapter 4, I want to read to you, beginning with the third verse. The scripture says this:
"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake."
"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."
I want to talk to you about preaching Jesus. Could we lift up our voice and ask His blessing upon the proclaiming of His word tonight? God, thank you for Your word and for Your people, for this gathering of the faithful. I pray that Your word will go forth with clarity. Let it minister to us, Lord. Let it be an edifying to the body of Christ, perfecting of the Saints. Let it accomplish the work of the ministry. And Lord, we give you thanks, we give you thanks, we give you thanks for the power of Your name, the power of Your word. We worship You and give You honor in Jesus' mighty name, we pray. And the church said, "In Jesus' name." Everybody said, "Amen and amen." God bless you. You may be seated in the name of the Lord.
Couple of things that you have heard me say before, but I'm going to say them again because I think it's worth repeating. And, uh, anything that is true is certainly worth repeating. That's how we remember it, is through, uh, repetition. And so we want to, we want to make sure to repeat the right things. But I, I grew up knowing the power and the importance of preaching Jesus. Uh, my grandfather liked to tell the story of when he was a young preacher and he was preaching revival in Idaho. Uh, he and my grandmother were there, and they were not having much success in this particular revival, as, as we might, uh, count success. And, uh, he was concerned and felt like he was, uh, somewhat, uh, falling short of the assignment. And so he called his dad, my great-grandfather, Andrew Uren, and said, "Dad, I don't know what to do. I'm trying to have revival here and we're not, we're not getting much done." And, uh, Andrew Eurs said, "Well, you've prayed?" "I've prayed." "You've fasted?" "I've fasted." "You've been in the word studying and preparing properly?" "Oh, yes." "Well, then there's only one thing to do." He said, "You've got to preach Jesus." Amen. And, uh, and he said, "Okay, I'll do that." He said, "Well, what do I do tomorrow night?" He said, "Preach Jesus again." And, uh, and that was the theme of it, and that's when they had a breakthrough because something happens when we preach Jesus.
And I use the term preaching Jesus because that is the mandate of the church to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. That's why we exist. We exist to declare the good news, which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. And when people put their faith in that truth and obey God's word, it changes their life forever. Amen. Forever.
And I remember once it being stated that, uh, Apostolic preachers are so narrow in what it is that they can preach, uh, because they, they have such a, just a narrow focus of what they can preach. They've only got six or seven topics they can even talk about. And I took such exception to that. I, I thought, well, that's not a very accurate thing to say that an Apostolic preacher only has six or seven topics that they can, uh, preach about. An Apostolic preacher only has one topic they can preach about. Amen. That one topic is Jesus. Everything we preach is Jesus. And that's the way it ought to be. If we're preaching anything, it has to be preached through the filter, through the lens, and through the perspective of Jesus Christ. Christ. If we're preaching worship, we better be talking about Jesus. If we're preaching, uh, prayer, we better be talking about Jesus. If we're preaching the Ten Commandments, we better be talking about Jesus. If we're preaching holiness and giving, if we're preaching faith and grace, we've got to be talking about Jesus because everything is all about Jesus. And we have to make sure that our focus is on the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
And so the Apostle Paul, uh, says here to the church at Corinth, he said, "If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost." And that the God of this world hath blinded the minds. He's blinded the minds. He has, he has put some sort of an obstruction over the mind's ability to perceive the truth. And he has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. We've got to recognize that that when we're preaching Jesus, and when we're reaching for the lost, and when we're witnessing the word of God to people, we have to remember that their minds are blinded. And so it's going to take some time for the message to get through. It's going to take some time for the message to register through that, that blindness of their mind. And so we do it. He said, "We preach not ourselves, but we preach Christ Jesus the Lord." And when it referring to ourselves, we're just your servants. And even at that, we are your servants for Jesus' sake. So he's letting them know it's all about Jesus. Everything we do is about Jesus. What we preach, we preach Jesus. We don't preach ourselves, we preach Jesus.
Uh, in, in preparing for the message this last Sunday, we had a good time on Sunday. That was a good time in the Lord. Amen. And I've told you before, uh, that, you know, we have a lot of fun with that service. And if, if the, the subtle prediction comes to pass or if it doesn't come to pass, just remember it was all, it was all fun. But if it does come to pass, amen, then, then, then we were maybe prophesying a little bit. But, uh, but we have fun with the, the, the Super Soul Sunday. And one of the things that was interesting to me as I did some research, I wanted to talk about the fact that Sunday's contest was a rematch. I wanted to talk about the, the God of a second chance. So in preparing, I did some research on what happened two years prior in the first match. And, and so I, I looked up some of the key storylines, some of the key details, uh, about that original match. I guess that would have been, uh, Super Bowl 57, I think it was. And when I looked it up, it was so interesting to me. I could, I couldn't find a storyline. The only information I could find was about the venue, and about the, literally the kinds of cameras that were used at Super Bowl 57, and about the staging of the event, and about the halftime performance, and about the celebrities that were in attendance, and about the city where it was held, and about all of the preparation that went into it. And I never did get to the real event itself because the event itself was about somebody being victorious. It was a contest between two assembled teams that were going to, that were going to compete against one another. There was going to be somebody that would become victorious, and there would be somebody who would leave disappointed. That's what was going on. But in the history of it all, the point of the, of the event was completely lost. And all that was talked about was the lights, and the camera, and the action, and the staging, and the performance, and the performers, and the celebrities on the side, sideline. And I thought, "Oh, God, help us that that is never said of the church." That in the peripheral preparation of the event itself, that we end up missing the point of what this is all about.
Because I want you to know, ladies and gentlemen, that this is all about souls being saved. This is all about people being victorious in Jesus Christ. This is all about Jesus having won the victory on, on our behalf and destroying the works of the devil. That's what this is all about. And we can't ever get caught up in anything else. Hear me now. Everything that we do has to support that main event. If we've got lighting, if we've got acoustics, if we've got seats, if we've got an address, if we've got an outreach effort, if we've got a community effort, if we have any sort of anything that we do, all of it has to be in support of the central focus, which is souls being saved and people being victorious in Jesus Christ. That's what this is all about. That's why this microphone is working right now so we can amplify our voice as we preach Jesus. That's why it's being live-streamed right now so that we can amplify our voice as we preach Jesus. That's why we have a desk so that I can put this sacred book upon it, and it can be, it's convenient to hold the sacred book, and we can read what thus sayeth the Lord. This isn't a decoration piece. This is a table upon which we place the most precious book that has ever been written and published. Hallelujah. That's what these glasses are for, so I can see what I'm reading. Amen. Because these are the words of eternal life. Amen. And that's why we've gathered. That's why we have Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. We're not doing this just so that we can fill up an evening. We're doing this because anytime people gather together, something happens in the Holy Ghost. When we begin to preach Jesus, when we begin to exalt Jesus, when we exalt Him and declare Him and profess Him and pronounce Him and proclaim Him, something happens. When we preach Jesus, I'm going to tell you, I don't even have to mention drug addiction, but when I preach Jesus, those addicted to drugs can be delivered. I don't, I don't even have to mention certain sins. Sometimes I can preach Jesus and people will be convicted of those sins and repent from those sins and have those sins washed away in a watery grave in Jesus' name. Praise God. That's what happens when we preach Jesus.
And so this is what Jesus said. He said, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so shall the Son of Man be lifted up." Now, that is hearkening back to an Old Testament account when the children of Israel had venomous vipers to, to intrude upon them, and they were, they were, uh, laying hold upon the people. They were biting the people, and venom was coursing through, uh, the bodies of the Israelites, and it was, in fact, punishment for sin. And, and so the, the Lord instructed Moses to, to craft a brazen serpent and to lift it up. And it was a fiery serpent, and they look upon that serpent, and, and if they could look upon the serpent, they would be healed. Jesus said, "In that exact same way, the Son of Man is going to be lifted up." As the serpent was lifted up in the wilderness. And then He went on to say, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me." That's what happens when we lift up Jesus. Let me tell you, we preach Christ Jesus and not ourselves. This isn't about us. This is about Jesus. Hallelujah.
When my grandfather was retiring as General Superintendent from the United Pentecostal Church, uh, he had served for 24 years, and they were honoring him. And, uh, they were saying so many wonderful things about him. And, and it was so kind, the things they said. Many people who so greatly appreciated his leadership were taking the time to, uh, honor him. And it was, it was one after another. And if you knew Grandpa, you knew he, he didn't like, he didn't like to spend a lot of time talking about himself. He wanted to get to preaching Jesus. And when he took the pulpit, uh, after all that honor came to his way, he said, "Thank you for the kind words, but that's a little too much Uren and not enough Jesus. We got to get to preaching Jesus." This isn't about a person or a personality. It's not about the people in the sense of exalting any one of ourselves. This is about exalting the Lord Jesus Christ. We want Cincinnati, Ohio to see Jesus in us. We want Tree of Life Church to exhibit and express and example Jesus to this city. Hallelujah. This thing is all about Jesus.
When Paul walked into the Corinthian Church and began to look at the dichotomy of, of problems that existed there, there were, there were so many issues that the Corinthian Church was facing. And, and in one place he said, "I knew nothing among you save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." We're going to read that, 1 Corinthians chapter 2 and verse 1. "And I, brethren, when I came to you, I came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God." He said, "I did not come to you with oration. I did not come to you with some kind of excellency of word, uh, configurations and speech, uh, to, to declare unto you the testimony of God." God. "I determined," this is what he determined, "I determined not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ." Let's stop right there. Save Jesus Christ. That's all he said that I came to know among you. "And Him crucified." But before we get to the Him crucified, let's stop at Jesus Christ. That name, Jesus. Oh, Hallelujah. The song says, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. There's just something about that name." Master, Savior, Jesus. Like the fragrance after the rain. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Let all heaven and earth proclaim. King and kingdoms shall all pass away. But there's something, oh, Hallelujah, that name. Hallelujah. That name, Jesus. It has within it the name of the God of the Old Testament. That's the Elohim, the El Shaddai, El Elyon. That's Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, Jehovah Shalom, Jehovah Rohi, Jehovah M'Kaddesh. Jehovah Tsidkenu. All of those qualities of God. The Lord is our provider, the Lord is our healer, the Lord is our Shepherd, the Lord is present. Hallelujah. The Lord is our peace, the Lord is our righteousness, the Lord is our sanctification. All of those qualities and attributes of that Mighty God is wrapped up into one name. And that name is Jehovah Tsidkenu, or Yeshua, which is Jehovah has become my salvation. That's what that name, Jesus, means. That means that the same God that thundered on Mount Sinai, that same God that shut the mouths of the lions in Daniel's lion's den, that same God that delivered the three Hebrew children out of the fiery furnace, that God, that God, that healing God, that righteous God, that sanctifying God came into this earth as a man to save me from my sin. That's what we're saying when we say Jesus. That's not a name you say in frustration. That's not a name you take in vain. That's not a name you can take or leave. That's the name of the holy God of heaven revealed to us. And there is none other name under, under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. It's a precious name. It's a beautiful name. There's no sweeter name. It's the blessed name of God. Oh, precious Jesus. Oh, precious Jesus. Hallelujah. There's within my heart a melody. Jesus whispers sweet and low. Fear not, I am with thee. Peace be still. In all of life's ebb and flow. Oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know. Fills my every longing and keeps me singing as I go. Oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know. He fills my every longing and keeps me singing as I go. Preach Jesus. Worship Jesus. Hallelujah. Lift up the name of Jesus. Hallelujah. When you go home tonight, you ought to walk into your house saying, "Thank you, Jesus, for the blood applied. Thank you, Jesus, that You washed my sin away. Thank you, Jesus, that You're the Lord of this house." We are the people of the name. That's the name that makes the devils tremble. That's the name that makes cancer shrivel up and die. That's the name that takes every sin you've ever committed and washes it away as though it were never committed. That's the name that prepares you to stand before God in judgment because you stand there innocent, as He is innocent, holy, for He is holy, perfect, for He is perfect. Glory to God. The name of Jesus, the name of the Lord, is a strong tower. The righteous runneth—thank God for the name. Blessed be the name. Blessed be the name. Blessed be the name of the Lord. You ought to love that name of Jesus. You ought to love that name of Jesus.
And Paul said, "I know nothing among you." "I determined to know nothing among you." There was nothing I wanted to know among you. I was determined. I wasn't going to buy into any other philosophy. I wasn't going to buy into any other kind of thought process or ideology. There was no mysticism that I was going to incorporate into my message. I wasn't going to share in the vain philosophies of this world and try to bring that to you. No, no, no, no. "I determined not to know anything among you save Jesus." That's that precious name. And we haven't even got to Christ yet. Hallelujah. Because we say Jesus, that's God in flesh. But He is also Christ, the long-awaited Holy One of Israel, the Anointed One. Hallelujah. He's that One that is the Captain of our salvation. He's the Redeemer. He's the Holy One. He's the Mighty Fortress. He's the Good Shepherd that will lead His people into the green pastures. You hear what I'm telling you? He is Jesus the Christ.
"I have determined, determined not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ." The innocent One, the Holy One, the Pure One, the Perfect One, the Mighty One, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Hallelujah. You know what? I, I got a little bit of time. I'm going to take the next few seconds here and just praise Him, if that's all right. He's the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father. He's the Prince of Peace. Hallelujah. He's the Root and the Offspring of David. He's the Door to the sheepfold, and He's the Scapegoat. He's the Lamb for sinners slain from the foundation of the world. He is the Fairest of ten thousand. He's the Bright and the Morning Star. Yes, He is. Yes, He is. He's the Great I Am that I Am. Hallelujah. The First, the Last, the Alpha, the Omega. He is King of Kings. He is Lord of Lords. Lord. He's the Way, the Truth, the Life. Hallelujah. He's the Light of the world. Yes, He is. He's the Good Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd of the sheep, and Bishop of our souls. Hallelujah. That's Jesus. That's Jesus. That's Jesus. And He has triumphed over death and hell. Hallelujah. He has triumphed over every principality and power, whether there be thrones or dominions or kingdoms, He's over them all. He's over them all. Hallelujah.
"Jesus Christ and Him crucified." That's who was crucified. It wasn't just a great teacher. It wasn't just another sage of his, his age. It wasn't just another seer. That was Jesus, the long-awaited Anointed One, the Mighty God manifest in flesh, Jesus the Christ. And Him crucified. Let me tell you, the difference between Him being crucified and me being crucified. If it had been me crucified, for he was a jolly good fellow, that's a, that's a crying shame. Poor guy. But when Jesus Christ is crucified, that's a totally different story. He goes down into death different than anybody else could go down into death. He steps down into death. Hallelujah. And death is completely befuddled by what it encounters when it encounters Jesus the Christ. This is an innocent man. This is the holy God of heaven manifest in human flesh. Jesus came down into death and overcame death. Hallelujah. Obeyed the law. Was obedient unto death, not just any death, even the death of the cross. Hallelujah. He didn't come down into this earth and break rules and, and, and break laws. No, He kept the law. And when He kept the law, sin had no jurisdiction over that body. Death had no jurisdiction over that body. The only power death has over a human body is the sin in that body. There was no sin in that body. Hallelujah. So He busted out of death, hell, and the grave. Had the, the keys of death, hell, and the grave. Hallelujah. He descended into the lower parts. But the Bible said, "Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." And Peter said on the day of Pentecost to the Jews, he said, "You thought the psalmist David was merely talking about himself. He was talking about Jesus." All the way back in the Book of Psalms, David was preaching Jesus. Amen. The Holy One was Jesus. "Thou wilt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption, neither wilt thou, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption, nor leave my soul in hell." Jesus came forth from death with victory over it and gives us that victory through repentance, baptism in His name for the remission of sins, and the infilling of His Spirit. Hallelujah. That's Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
When Jesus was crucified, you got to understand, it wasn't a matter of Him having to go down into death and then fight His way out. No, no, no, no, no. He, He, He didn't have to fight His way out. It was a foregone conclusion. The moment that innocent, pure, spotless, blemishless, holy, perfect Lamb of God died, He was going to be coming up out of that grave three days later, no questions asked. He didn't have to to fight out of it at all because death had no power over Him. When you're baptized into Jesus, you are baptized into His body. What body? That resurrected body. That's how you and I come up out of the grave. We're baptized into a resurrected body and, and then we're filled with His Spirit. And if that Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwell in you, Hallelujah. If that Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwell in you, that Spirit is going to quicken your mortal body. Hallelujah. You know, you got that little key fob that you use to go unlock your door, and you're going out to your car now. They make them so, so, uh, fancy today that some of you got that little button you can push and it'll start the car, and you'll just be out in the welcome center talking to somebody, and you'll think, "Uh oh, I'm leaving in five minutes. I better get that car warmed up." You push that button and get, and what happened is the manufacturer of the car created a key fob, and that key fob sends a message. It's an invisible message. When you push that button, that, that, that sends a message to a, a sensor that's in the vehicle, and the vehicle ignites to the point that the heat will come on, and your seat heater will come on, and it'll fill that car up, and, and you'll walk out to that car, haven't even been in that car yet, but you'll go out to that car and sit down like you've been warming it up for 30 minutes because of the sensor that's in the key fob connecting to the sensor that's in the automobile. That's what happens when the trumpet sounds. When that trumpet sounds, there's a sensor inside that trumpet. Hallelujah. That connects to a sensor that's in me called the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah. And when that last trumpet sounds, Hallelujah. When that last trumpet sounds, these feet won't stay on the ground. Hallelujah. Because whatever is inside the voice of the Archangel, the Trump of God, it's going to resonate with the Holy Ghost that's in me. It's going to quicken this mortal body, and this mortal is going to put on immortality, and this corruptible is going to put on incorruption, and I'm going to be changed. I'm going to be changed. Glory to God. And when I'm changed, I'm going to be changed into an immortal body, into an incorruptible body, and none of these signs of aging are going to be connected to that immortal body. No sickness, and no pain. Hallelujah. And no tears. You hear me now? They're not going to be any aging. It's the land of the unclouded day. It's the land of the eternal day. Hallelujah. All will be peace forevermore on that happy golden shore. What a day! What a day! What a day! What a day! I wish I could preach it like I feel it tonight. What a day that will be. That's what we preach when we preach Jesus. That's what we preach when we preach Jesus. Death doesn't make us afraid anymore because we understand that when we die in Christ, it's the door to eternal life. I know our flesh forgets that sometimes. Our fleshly body forgets that sometimes. We get a little used to this world and get used to the things that we're familiar with, and our flesh forgets it. But don't ever let your flesh dictate to your faith. There's a home far beyond the starry sky. Hallelujah. There's a land where we'll never grow old. Hallelujah. You're going to see people in that glorious place. Hallelujah. They're going to be in a new body, an ageless body, a sinless body. Hallelujah. A diseaseless body. And that's the kind of body you're going to have. My goodness, my goodness, my goodness. God forbid you ever stop believing that. God forbid we ever stop preaching that. That's the gospel. And I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because He hath anointed us to preach the gospel." Yes, He has. "To bind up the brokenhearted." Yes, He had. "To set at liberty them that are bruised." Hallelujah. "To preach deliverance to the captive, to open the doors of the prison to them that are bound, recovery of sight to the blind." That's what we're doing when we preach Jesus. Glory to God. Preach Jesus. Preach Jesus to your family. Talk about Him. The Bible says talk about Him when you're sitting in your home. Talk about Him when you rise up in the morning. Talk about Him when you go to bed at night. Talk about Him while you're sitting in the house. That's what the Bible says. In your casual conversation, exalt Jesus. Exalt Jesus. Exalt Jesus. Exalt Jesus. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Jesus be the center of it all. Jesus be the center of it all. From beginning to the end, it will always be, it's always been You, Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. Be the center of my life. Jesus. Be the center of my life. From beginning to the end, it will always be, it's always been You, Jesus. Oh, Jesus. Be the center of this church. Jesus. Be the center of Your church. Hallelujah. From beginning to the end, it will always be, it's always been You, Jesus. Oh, Jesus. We're nothing if we're not preaching Jesus. We're nothing if we're not singing Jesus. We're nothing if we're not teaching Jesus. This building doesn't mean anything if it's not about Jesus. None of this carpet, none of this, this me talking, none of it means anything if we're not preaching Jesus. He's the One who saves. He's the One who delivers. He's the One who heals and sets free. Oh, God, help us. I want to, I listen, I want to preach it until you believe it. I want to pray until you believe it. I call your names out before God in prayer that God will speak to your heart before the word comes forth because it is imperative that you believe it. That you believe it so deeply that it changes the way you walk, that it changes the way you talk, that it changes the way you live your life, that it corrects activities and behaviors and appetites, that it gets you into a place where you try to tell others the good news. When you go, tell it on the mountain, and tell it in the valley. That Jesus saves. That Jesus saves from the uttermost to the guttermost. Jesus. Jesus. Jesus saves. Glory. Glory. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Paul said, "Follow me as I follow Christ." The antithesis is also true. Don't follow me if I don't follow Christ. It's not about us. It's about Jesus. Glory. Glory. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Unto you this day in the city of David is born a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. You shall call His name Emmanuel, God with us. You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins. Hallelujah. Preach it. Pray it. Believe for it. Declare it in the name of Jesus.
Listen to how important Jesus is. "Whatsoever you do, whether in word or in deed, do all of it in the name of Jesus." I'm, I'm going to say that again. Whatever you do, whether you do it in word, or whether you do it indeed, you better do all of it, and I mean all of it, every bit of it, everything, everything, everything. What you do when you first wake up till you go to bed at night, everything you do, do all of it in the name of Jesus Christ. Do all of it in the name of Jesus Christ. Oh, I just need to praise Him. Could you help me praise Him right now? Hallelujah. I need somebody who believes and knows He's the One that wipes my tears away. In the name of Jesus, He is my rock. He is my sword. He is my shield. He is the wheel in the middle of a wheel. Hallelujah. He is the One who saves. He is the One who delivers. I wonder if there's anybody who loves Him and will give Him praise today. Hallelujah. Some of you got people that you're praying for, loved ones that you're praying for. I want you to bring them to Jesus. Bring those needs to Jesus. Call upon the mighty power of the name of Jesus. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You can stand with me right now. I feel the Holy Ghost in this house. I feel the Holy Ghost in this house. Blessed be His holy name. Blessed be His holy name. Hallelujah. Glory to God. "By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
"Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past, listen, remember, don't forget it, but remember that ye being Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands; At that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who were sometimes far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
