Today in this video, I'm going to be discussing and outlining with a full timeline of the strange trip that Mohammed Atta, the lead hijacker of the plane that crashed directly into the North Tower, along with a muscle hijacker, Abdul Aziz al-Omari. This is coming directly from the archives of the FBI in a report that was put out on October 5th of 2001, and the timeline of these two leading into September 11th.
Now, when it comes to a trip to Portland, Maine, it's thought that he had rented a car sometime during the day on Monday, possibly Monday afternoon. Atta and al-Omari departed from Boston, where they were staying temporarily, to Portland, Maine, and they arrived at Portland, Maine, and checked into a Comfort Inn at 5:43 Eastern Standard Time. The Comfort Inn located in South Portland, Maine.
Now, before I get into the later timeline, the surveillance, the video cameras of these two and their whereabouts before September 11th, the obvious question is, why? Why would Mohammed Atta, who was thought to be the main lead hijacker, go on a two-and-a-half-hour road trip from Boston with another hijacker, leaving the rest of his group in Boston? The main reason that it's theorized he decided to do this was because of potential lenient security at the much smaller Portland, Maine airport. The idea would be that Atta and al-Omari would be able to pass through security, have their bags checked, and not have to pass through the same security in Boston, kind of like a connecting flight. At that point, the other hijackers, of course, coming directly from their hotel, would have to go through security, and Atta thought he could kind of circumvent it by having his bags checked at a smaller airport, a lot less attention. He thought the security would be more lenient, and that's why he and one other hijacker made this trip to Portland, Maine on September 10th. This was a Monday, remember, the afternoon of September 10th.
Atta and al-Omari check in to the Comfort Inn hotel at 5:43, and their whereabouts are mainly unknown until around 8 or 9:00. Sometime between, they were seen eating at a Pizza Hut for around 15 minutes. Now, this does strike me as a little odd, eating at a random Pizza Hut at around 8:30 at night on a Monday. Of course, Atta and al-Omari really didn't care. This was probably their final meal. There is no surveillance camera of them inside the Pizza Hut, but it is speculated this would be Mohammed's last meal, eating Pizza Hut in Maine at around 8:30 at night on Monday night, September the 10th.
Now, at 8:31, Atta and al-Omari visited a Key Bank drive-up ATM. And this is where I wouldn't really call these famous photographs, but you'll see these in a lot of different places when it comes to September 11th. So this happened, I would say, about 123 hours before these two men flew an airplane into the North Tower. You can see al-Omari next to Atta. Al-Omari seemingly laughing with Atta sitting there with the stone-cold look that he always has. The reason for the ATM trip was likely due to the cost of box cutters and other potential needs that they would buy an hour later at Walmart, but we'll get to that.
At around 9:15, Atta and al-Omari were seen at a Jetport gas station, presumably getting gas and also maybe snacks, going to the interior of the store. That's where that surveillance camera comes from. And just 7 minutes later, Atta was seen at Walmart. He was inside of the Walmart for around 20 minutes, possibly purchasing weapons that were going to be used with cash for the attack. And the next time that Atta and al-Omari were seen on camera was at 5:33 a.m. at the main airport. And all of the surveillance cameras you see of Atta and al-Omari are at the main airport. They're not at Boston Logan. I feel like a lot of people think those images were from Boston Logan International Airport. They're not. That is the main airport, smaller airport for sure.
At 5:33, they checked out of the Comfort Inn. At 5:40 a.m., the Nissan that they rented entered the Portland International Jetport Airport parking lot, and it was parked on the first floor, directly across from the entrance. 3 minutes later, at 5:43 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, Atta and al-Omari checked in at the US Airways counter. 2 minutes later, at 5:45 a.m., they passed through the airport security. And at 6:00 a.m., they departed on their short flight to Boston International Airport to meet up with the other hijackers that were going to be involved. And the other hijackers were already in Boston, staying at a hotel.
This was done as kind of a diversion to possibly get around security. There was an airport employee. This is a very weird, it's almost like you don't believe it. It's too crazy to be true. There was an airport employee that said, and I believe the employee was at the main airport, not the Boston Logan. He would be seeing Atta and al-Omari. He said, supposedly, this is what he thought in his mind, that those guys looked exactly like terrorists. But then he thought to himself that, you know, you don't want to profile people. That's bad. And obviously, Atta and al-Omari were able to pass through security.
The short flight from Maine to Boston was at 6:00 a.m. So that is just an interesting little backstory to Mohammed Atta and another muscle hijacker, their little trip to Portland, Maine, and what they did the night before, going to a Pizza Hut, going to an ATM, possibly going to Walmart to get supplies for the September 11th attacks. But in looking at them, it's just crazy to think that at least Mohammed Atta knew. Some say that the muscle hijackers, al-Omari, would be part of that group. They didn't know until it was actually happening, like until the day of. So maybe he didn't know he was going to die. But it's crazy, you know, when you know you're going to die the next day, looking at the security camera and seeing them, and just how they were going to change the world, obviously in a terrible, terrible way.
