Why do smart people always wait until the last minute? It turns out their brain is doing something that yours is not. Studies have found that people with higher IQs tend to procrastinate more than everyone else. And the reason is simple. They know they can finish in time, so they don't feel the urge to rush.

But that's not the interesting part. While they're waiting, their brain is still working on the problem without them realizing it. This is called the incubation effect. And it's been shown again and again in research. When you step away from a task, your mind keeps processing it in the background, forming connections you'd never find by sitting there and forcing it.

Then, as the deadline approaches, something else kicks in. The body releases a surge of chemicals that sharpen focus and shut out distractions. Research shows that people under moderate pressure are about 23% more creative than those under no pressure at all. But this only works if you actually trust your ability. For someone without the skill or experience, waiting just creates panic. But for someone who knows the problem deeply, the delay becomes part of the process.

This is completely different from laziness. Because when smart people wait, they're not being lazy. They're giving their brain time to explore possibilities in the background. Then using the deadline as a switch, snapping into a mental state where time compresses, focus narrows, and thinking becomes faster, clearer, and more precise than normal.
