Hi kids. Uh today we're going to be starting our unit on expressions and equations. As we go on, we're going to get more familiar and comfortable with algebraic expressions. As the name of this unit implies, it is the algebraic expression starter kit. And um to do that uh well, we have to uh be very very clear on the difference between expressions and equations. So what we'll do here in a second is uh take a look at those in a little bit of detail uh differentiating the two seeing how they're similar but most importantly how they're different and uh as as we go about that we'll get more familiar with variables and um begin to discuss order of operations as we get into our numeric and algebraic expressions distinguishing between those a little later in the unit. Okay.
So here act and equate and express or express and equate. Either way we should be getting clearer on the distinction between these two things. Expressions verse equations. Expressions have no equal sign. Whereas an equation has an equal sign as the name implies it equals things. So uh when it has no equal sign we'll have things on both ends but there won't be an equal. It's that simple. So, greater than, less than, uh, greater than, equal to, less than, equal to, uh, whereas we're pretty straightforward here. Now, we'll start seeing variables in here, uh, different letters, but as long as we keep those straight and separate, uh, we should be okay there. But again, both can have numbers, variables, and operations. Some of you might call those functions. Uh, the it's a function of an operation. That's a chicken and egg thing. But if you have questions about that, uh, we're more than happy to clear those up for you, too. All right.
Okay. So, here I can equate and express or express and equate. Either way, we should So, we're going to go ahead and roll on to the difference between numeric and algebraic expressions. So, a uh numeric expression is pretty straightforward like we had here. So, I have 4 + 6 - 5. And again, I jumped the gun with order of operations, but track me through this. So, 4 + 6 is 10 - 5. So, our total is five. Okay. Hope that doesn't confuse you. um we uh I didn't do that literally, but again that's probably good so you can see step by step what happens there. Okay.
Now an algebraic equation is a little different because it has the variables. So we got 4 + 6 + b this time. Okay. So that's going to equal 4 + 6. So it's going to be 10 + b. Okay, I kept it nice and linear there. Uh, both of these have equal signs. I did a multifunction one there. Bad example, but uh good good exposure for you. Um, now I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll back that up and and simplify it. Oh, come on. There we go. Okay, so we'll do a subtraction this time. So uh we're going to do 12 - 6 = 6. Okay. So again that is a numeric expression whereas our algebraic contains the variables. So pretty straightforward. I know like anything new, it's it's going to be a little murky at first, but but we'll get through those and and find clear waters because uh one thing about the numbers, uh, they they are concrete if we do them right. So, um okay, we're going to go ahead and move on and kind of start applying some of the things we've learned through the PBS modules that I've attached in your classroom. You can see them previewed here um in several places through the slides. So, um I hope you don't have any questions, but if you do, and I do expect them, don't be shy about asking them.
