Prayer is like a river. In a river, you have many streams. And if you can identify the different streams in the river, then you're going to be able to discern what the Holy Spirit is doing in any given moment in terms of your prayer life.
For example, when I first began to learn to drive, it was very rigid. Every turn was sharp. Uh, the gas would really go and the brakes would really stop and there was a jerking motion to the way I drove. And I'm I'm ashamed to admit it, but it took me several tries to get my driver's license. Remember that, Pastor Mike? All the different attempts. Like the first one I failed. The second one I failed. The third one the person who was going to let me use their car developed a drug addiction and didn't show up. Like that weekend it happened. And then the next time I went it was something wrong with the tail light in the car. Then the fifth fifth fourth or fifth time I went I caused the car accident. It was a whole thing that it's under the blood now though. God forgave me. I don't know what happened with the rest of that. I say it wasn't my fault, but the the instructor said, "I have no part of this." Got out of the car and ran away.
But I'm saying that as an illustration because when when you first begin to drive, how many of you remember that you there's this rigidity to it. It's this you have to really consciously think about every move. And then before you know it, even though it's not safe, sometimes you'll be driving, then you'll look up and you go, "When did I get here?" Because it flows so naturally. Or perhaps you can remember riding a bike. There was thoughtfulness to every move and the balance was difficult to strike. And that's sometimes what it's like in prayer for Christians. They go to pray and they're wondering what they're supposed to do in any given moment. And so I want to show you the seven realms of prayer or the seven streams in the river of prayer. And I'm giving these to you so that when you go to pray the next time, like tonight or tomorrow morning, when you go to pray, you're going to now be able to discern, okay, here's the flow of the spirit. Now I can cooperate with the Holy Spirit as opposed to wandering and floundering and trying to figure all of that out.
So, first uh stream of prayer, adoration. Adoration. This is the worship of God. Now a powerful man of God once told me David if you have an hour to pray worship for 45 minutes. Now he did not give that to me as a formula as in I literally have to pray for 45 minutes. Rather he was showing me something in terms of the power of worship. You go to worship and it does something for your prayer time. It gets you unstuck. Helps you to move with the spirit rather than getting grounded here in the earth. It's like when you go to pray, you have these tethers connecting you to the earthly. And when you begin to worship, you are cutting away at those tethers and that frees you to go to higher places. Like the Lord will take your heart in the spirit and lift it to a heavenly realm. John 4:24 says, "For God is spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in >> spirit and >> spirit and you need both." >> Why? Because truth is the substance with which the Holy Spirit forms the revelation of God. What do I mean by that? Simply put, when you see a truth regarding the Lord and the Holy Spirit takes that truth and breathes on it, that causes worship to come from deep within the heart because you've seen a glimpse of God. Well, go throughout the entire Old Testament. Think of, for example, Isaiah. He becomes uh reverent and he begins to tremble and he begins to fret. Think about all of the different instances in the Old Testament where God manifests his presence, even in the New where God manifests his presence and there's this response to that. Often it's to either tremble and fall down or there's this eruption of worship from within the heart. They see something in God and then there's worship. Well, that's what worship is. Worship is a response to revelation. Think of the living beings in heaven. The angelic hosts that fly around the throne room of God. They constantly cry, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty." The whole earth is filled with his glory. Every time they circle that throne, they cry, "Holy, holy, holy." Do you know what's happening there? Think about it. That cry of worship is a response to a revelation. Which means, watch this now, for all of eternity, those angelic beings are constantly capturing new glimpses of God they hadn't seen before. And each time they see that glimpse, they cry out, "Holy, holy, holy." Worship is a response to revelation. So when you go to pray, you'll notice that there are moments where the Holy Spirit just begins to draw your attention. I mean, all throughout prayer, he's drawing your attention to the Lord, but there are those moments where you can sense like this this desire maybe just to start singing or to start praising or to just start thanking him. You may even find that you walk in the room and you just start saying, "Jesus, I love you. I worship you." And it just starts to flow naturally. That's adoration. That is a form of prayer because it's connection, communion, uh, relation and and communication between you and God. I'm worshiping him. I'm adoring him. He's becoming the the subject of my attention. My mind is being focused on him. And it causes you to cry out. These are beautiful moments in prayer that you'll notice. And as I said, it helps to worship because that kind of breaks up the tough soil in your heart and moves you forward in prayer.
Number two, and I'm going to stay on this point for an extended period, I think. Number two is supplication. Supplication is just the fancy word for prayer requests. This is asking things of God, asking God to meet your needs, asking God to give you a miracle, asking God to give you guidance. Philippians 4:6-7. Please turn there now. Philippians chapter 4. I'm going to read verses 6 and 7. And we're going to break this down. Don't worry about anything. That's the first portion. How many of you are already challenged by that verse? Well, I don't know if I have enough money to pay all the bills this month. Don't worry about anything. Well, you don't know what the doctor's report said. Don't worry about anything. But you don't know how difficult my situation is. You don't know how long I've been dealing with it. Don't worry about anything. But Lord, you don't know how stubborn my spouse is. Don't worry about anything. Father, my children have gone wayward. They're not living in the way that I taught them. Don't worry about anything. What a challenge. You You know why the scripture tells us? Don't worry about anything. Instead, what's what does it say in the next breath? Instead, pray about. >> Do you know why? Because you can either worry or pray. You can't do both. And some of us think we're praying when we're just worrying in front of God. Worry is the flesh's powerless counterfeit for prayer. Worry is a useless attempt at control. Because we imagine that if I could just focus on it, think about it, obsess about it, see it from every angle, expect it before it gets here, that in so doing, I now have control over this thing. No, it is a false sense of control. You don't actually have any control over it. That's why Jesus said, "You can't get any taller by worrying. If you're short, worry isn't going to make you tall. It It's fruitless. It does nothing for you. This is why we ought to instead pray about everything. Now, watch what it says. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. That's two more instructions right there. Now the religious thinking in the church today would try to convince you that you shouldn't ask God for anything. How many times have you heard it said some Christians all they want is health, wealth, and happiness, but that's not what God wants to give you. What do you think Jesus came to give you? Misery, sickness, death, burdens, bondage, poverty. Look, I understand we have to balance this and no, the gospel is not all about what you can get from Jesus. And no, serving Christ doesn't mean you're not going to have any issues. But we can we stop pretending that being miserable is the same as being spiritual. >> Paul wrote that he learned how to live in both situations. He knew how to live with plenty and he knew how to live with little. And the problem comes when we get stuck on either or and say the other one's not of God. So my point here is simple that that that yes it is good to bring your prayer request to God because sometimes we'll think something like well you know I I I don't want to ask for a job or I don't want to ask for a raise or I don't want to ask for something here on this side of the world when on the other side of the world we have brothers and sisters who are starving or brothers and sisters who are being persecuted. Do you really think God is in heaven when you pray and he's going, "Listen, I need to work out a little deal with you here. I know you're asking me for a job. I know you're asking me for a car, but but I'm kind of running short on supply here. So, if I give you the car, I can't feed those kids over there. If I give you the job, I can't house the homeless over here. It's silly when you put it that way, but we feel virtuous, right? I'm I'm not going to ask for anything because I know people have it worse. That's like saying you can't be thankful because others have it better. Ask him. He want He wants to give it to you. It says it right here. That's a command. Now, look what happens when you do this. Watch this now. Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Look what happens. Verse seven, the sequence of events. I stop worrying. I start praying. I tell God what I need and I thank him for everything that he's done. So I'm I'm making a prayer request, but I'm also still grateful for what I have. Verse seven, then you will experience the peace of God which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ. So this is supplication. This is one of the streams in the river of prayer. And you'll notice that sometimes when you go to pray, you have all of the things on your mind that are troubling you, responsibilities, your checklist, your to-do. It's okay to take that list of things, give it to God, thank him, and then move on. That's what supplication is for. And sometimes you'll sense the Holy Spirit moving you in that direction.
Number three, confrontation. This is spiritual warfare. Let me tell it to you plainly. Angels exist. Demons exist. And when I say demons exist, I don't mean, oh, the metaphor for evil. They're an abstract concept representing the darkness that's inside all of us that causes us to do things we ought not to do. No, I mean actual sentient conscious beings that live and move in the supernatural realm. They speak, they strategize, they have minds and wills and they come after you and your family. It's real. >> We believe in the supernatural. The Bible is fundamentally supernatural, superficially practical, not vice versa. So, we know that we are in a very real warfare. We are engaged in battle. Now, look at this. James 4:7, "Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee." We ought to be aware of the spiritual battle, sober minded. But, as I often say, there's balance in all things. On one side in the church, we have those who are so carnal that they don't acknowledge the existence of the supernatural and they they scoff at the idea of demonic beings. Or they may even say, "Oh, you can't do anything to me no matter what." Well, okay. There's a reason the Bible gives us warning about demons. And then on the other side, there are some who are so paranoid that they forget who lives in them. Like for example, many Christians when they're praying against demonic forces, they are imagining it's like the Holy Spirit's getting into an arm wrestling contest with the demon and you're standing the Holy behind the Holy Spirit helping him, right? And and he's he's wrestling that demon. And then maybe the Holy Spirit starts to lose, his arm starts to shake, he begins to sweat. He says, "HELP ME OUT QUICK. GET ON ANCESTRY.COM. I need you to find out what happened six generations ago. Give me the name of the demon." Then you give me the name of the demon. He goes, "Okay, now I have my strength. I can beat this thing. We don't say that, but that's kind of how we imagine it. God's going, "Well, you didn't identify where the curse came from. I can't give you a breakthrough yet." You see how silly it sounds when you put it like that. Now, I'm not saying we don't face the battle, of course. But we have to come to recognize the key. Look at what it says. Watch this. Very simple. Very simple. Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil. He will flee. Maybe the reason the devil isn't fleeing is because you are not submitted. And then we want to blame the ritualistic so that we don't have to do the practical. Can I confront another mindset with spiritual warfare? Sometimes we get it in our heads and it's become a point of bragging almost for some Christians. Well, the only reason the devil's attacking me so much is because I'm such a threat to his kingdom. Think about that. The only reason the enemy is always messing with me is because I'm so powerful in the spirit. Think about that thinking. Don't you realize that bullies only go after the weak? And so we wear our bondage like a badge and instead of reaching for actual victory, we settle for that defeat thinking that it makes us more spiritual. But when you submit to God, you come against the devil, not in your own authority. That's why you have to submit. Because that submission places you in Christ, that authority. So that when you resist the devil, it's not even you resisting him. It's the Christ in you to where now I stand in Christ and I come against the enemy in his authority with his power by his will. I represent that heavenly authority so that the devil cannot resist. It says he flees. He doesn't fight. He flees. So that when you align yourself with God's word and you walk with the Holy Spirit and you speak to that demonic power in the name of Jesus, I bind that drug addiction. In the name of Jesus, I come against those attacks with nightmares. In the name of Jesus, I come against that depression, that anxiety, that confusion, that perversion. In the name of Jesus, I come against the attacks of the enemy in my family. Takes alignment. Years ago, I had a dream. And in the dream, I sat up in my bed. And as I looked into the middle of my room, I noticed this dark mist begin to appear. And in the middle of the mist, I saw two eyes form and a mouth with a smile forming in that mist. It was demonic. And I could sense the demonic presence. How many of you you were getting around like someone who has demons in them? You can just feel it. Remember, dad, we were I'm I'm sidetracking, but I'm going to I think they'll find it interesting. When we were driving, where were we? All of us were in the car on the way to church or coming from church. My dad, my mom, and then it was us three in the back, me, you, and Rocky. And we're in the back seat, and there's this lady. You could see she has devils. Like she's like talking to herself, but you can see, you know, you can see it in the eyes. That's not biblical, but it it's practical. I've seen it where you can see it in the eyes. And she's standing on the corner facing somewhere looking around and then looking off. My dad starts praying in tongues and the moment he we're in the car, she's across like the the the street so she's some distance away. He starts praying in tongues rebuking it and she looks right in our car. You remember that? And she just like lost it like just starts cussing at us and yelling. It was demonic manifestation. So that same feeling I felt when I was having this dream and I rebuke this devil in my dream doesn't go. I'm going, "This is weird. There's nothing in my life that invites this." Rebuke it again. Doesn't go. I said, "How are you still here?" And it says, "Ask the one in your family who talks to the dead." And then I woke up. It wasn't for It wasn't for me. It was a warning for someone in my family. I get on the phone. I call my grandmother. We call her Nani. I said, "Nanie, I had this dream." And she goes, "I already know who you're talking about." She said, "I'm going to give her the warning." And and I just I just said her, so maybe that that eliminates it by half. I'll tell you later, Pastor Mike, who it was. And so she says she says, "I'm going to call her and tell her cuz this member of our family was talking to demons, thinking she was talking to old family members, and God gave me that warning for her." That's the spiritual warfare in which we're engaged. And sometimes when you're praying, you're going to sense that. Don't let people mock you for rebuking demonic power. Don't let people mock you for saying that's an attack of you. You know what? We You don't need to start saying again in the body of Christ. We need to start saying again that's a spiritual attack. >> You don't hear that often. We hear, "Oh yeah, the situational work." And I'm not saying use it for everything like, "Oh, they forgot my fries." And that's a spiritual attack. I I I mean like like like you can sense when it's demonic. Don't be afraid to call that out. Don't be afraid to say that's spiritual. That's demonic. That's an attack of the enemy. AND PRAY AGAINST IT because greater is he who is in you than he that is in the world. That power is in you. And when you are praying, church, when you are praying, sometimes the Holy Spirit will will will cause you to confront that demonic attack. And you need to be open to it. Lord, help us be more open to the supernatural because some of us are so close-minded, we we we mock this kind of talk. We we pretend like it doesn't exist. Guys, it's very real. And until you've experienced it, you may you may not take it seriously, but once you've experienced it, then you know, you go, "Okay, now I know." And you need to you need to pray against demonic attacks coming against your children, coming against your spouse, coming against your family, coming against your church. You need to pray because God placed you there as a watchman on that post and the Holy Spirit will lead you in that place. Remember even Jesus said in the Lord's prayer to to deliver us from the evil one that is praying against the influence of the enemy.
Number four, contrition. This is repentance. Now I know there's there's there's a you you guys know I'm big on grace. Like I teach on grace a lot, but there's an unhealthy understanding of grace that would lead someone to say that you no longer need to repent. I get what they're saying. I think I think if I understand correctly, what they're trying to say is you only repent once to be saved. That I agree with. You don't need to keep repenting to keep your salvation. That I understand. That's that's the initial repentance. But what people forget is that you constantly need to be changing your mind for the better. Be ye transformed by the renewing of your >> well to have your mind renewed, you need to have your mind changed. And the changing of your mind is the definition of repentance. And so you need to walk in a way that keeps your heart soft toward God. That you're not allowing the the the compromise to slowly harden your heart. Because that's what happens where you're on fire. And by that I mean you're obeying God and you're you're praying, you're reading the word, you're evangelizing, you have the joy of the spirit, the peace of the spirit, the life of the spirit. People can sense it around you. And then a little compromise gets in. Little by little, it eats away. And before you know it, old habits have returned. Old mindsets are back. That's because because we we we often neglect contrition in prayer. What did Jesus tell us? I mean, we we'll quote again the Lord's Prayer. He says it right there in Matthew 6. Verse 12, he says, "Here's how you should pray and forgive us our sins." Some would say, "Well, that was before the new covenant." But Jesus is still giving instructions to his church and we have for as we have forgiven those who sin against us. Nobody says that's old covenant forgiving people. Neither is asking God for forgiveness. 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just." Faithful meaning he consistently does it. And if he's consistently responding to our requests, that means we're consistently requesting. I don't mean that you wallow in misery every day of your life, beating yourself up over past mistakes and constantly calling yourself a dirty sinner. I'm just a low life, no good. But I don't even I'm talking about just Lord I acknowledge that was wrong. Forgive me and help me to operate now in my new nature. Now one could argue well the blood already forgave you. Already washed you. That's fine. But I'm talking about for everyday practical living. Constantly keeping the compromise out of your life. Constantly watching for those little weeds that sprout up and saying, "Lord, I need your help removing them." That's contrition. And you'll find that often in prayer when you go to pray because you'll s you know how you know you can sense the Holy Spirit grieving. You ever go to pray and just something's just not right? I'm not talking like you sense something demonic or you're worried about something in your life. You just there's something off right here between you two. You just I can't quite place my finger on it. Often I'll just kind of replay the day and I'll say, "Okay, the Lord Lord was not pleased with that attitude or that comment or that thought. I need to go ahead and repent." Sometimes he'll do it to me right right when I'm with people. Sometimes I'll say things I shouldn't say like people frustrate me. My team knows this and right in the middle of the meeting. Okay, sorry Lord. Sorry Lord. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Because I can feel his conviction coming on me. Well, that's how we need to respond that quickly so that we're not grieving the Holy Spirit. Okay? So you'll you'll notice that when you pray.
Another thing that you do in prayer. Another one of the streams right here. Number five, meditation. That is meditation on the word. Psalm 1:es 1-3 says this. Oh the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or stand around with sinners or joining with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither and they prosper in all they do. Watch this now. When you go to read the word, the word gives you fuel for prayer. If you don't feel inspired to pray, just go read Psalms. If you don't feel inspired to pray for any areas to improve in your own heart, go read Proverbs. You won't be able to get 10 chapters in before you say, "Lord, I need a lot of work." I can't tell you that how often it is that I read through the scripture and I'm looking at Jesus like, I am not like that. Oh my goodness. Fruit of the spirit, patience. Lord, help me. Help me. Help me. Help me. And and you you take the word and instead of just because here's what we do sometimes. We open it, we read the chapter, and then we just move on with the day and then we forget everything. Yeah, it gets into your spirit, but but for practical everyday living, that's not going to help you. You you you you get in the word, you receive a truth, and you meditate on it. What's meditation? Repetition in thought, vocalize it. The early church did this. They would meditate. They would they would just contemplate the scriptures and they'd run it through their mind again and again and again. They'd say it out loud again and again and then they'd begin to pray. And here's how that might look like for me. The fruit of the spirit, patience, patience, patience, patience. Help me, Lord. Help me Lord. Right? And I would say the fruit of the spirit is patience. The fruit of the spirit is patience. And then there's a shift. The fruit of the spirit is patient. Lord, make me patient. Make me kind. And that's where the shift happens. That's meditation. And it's part of prayer. I'm not the judge. And nobody prays to impress me. Nor should they. But when I'm listening to people pray, I can hear when there's a depth of the word behind their prayers. You know, like those old church moms. Every church needs the old church moms. You could hear it when they pray. Why? Because that's all they do. They're in their Bibles and they pray. And there's a depth behind it. And so, so the word gives substance to your prayers, weight behind the prayers. And it begins to develop those desires in you, godly desires. Okay? So that's meditation.
Number six is intercession. 1 Timothy 2:1, "I urge you first of all to pray for all people. Ask God to help them intercede on their behalf and give thanks for them." Praying for others. Whether you feel like it or not, whether it looks like it or not, your prayers are making a difference. I wish we could see in the natural in the supernatural in the same manner in which we see the natural realm like the prophet's servant Lord open his eyes and then he sees angelic hosts surrounding them more for them than against them because if we could just peel back that layer and catch a glimpse I'm not sure what it would look like but I know that you would see the words you're releasing doing something on the people that you're praying for. Now, here's here's where it gets tricky because faith doesn't necessarily deny reality. It changes it. True. But faith what you see in faith will often contradict what you see in reality. Like it doesn't mean they're not sick. For example, you're praying against the cancer. I believe they'll be healed. That doesn't mean they're not in the material world for all intents and purposes sick because otherwise you wouldn't be praying for them in the first place. To pray for them is to acknowledge they're sick. But as you're praying, you may not see anything change in their body. Or maybe you're praying for a spouse. Or maybe you're praying for a wayward child. Or maybe you're praying for a co-worker or a friend. You're praying and the more you pray for them, it seems the more hostile they become to the gospel. Or you're praying for them and they seem to be getting worse and you're thinking, should I stop praying for them? Is this me affecting them in that way? Doubt starts to creep in. Maybe it's maybe it's doing no good. And you begin to doubt the potency of prayer. This is where you as a believer have to learn to see through the eyes of faith even when you don't see it in the natural. Hope and faith. Hope and faith. Hope knows that it can happen at some point. Faith pulls what is in the future and brings it into the now. And that's where you as a believer come in and stand in the gap and intercede for your loved ones. I wonder how many of you here in these seats and how many of you watching online are saved today because somebody prayed for you. Ishmael are we call I I don't he's not a keyboard player. He's a psalmist. Your mom and dad legacy of prayer and worship. I look at where's Steven McKazuma. You you enjoy his worship. He's right there. Talk to his mom and tell me your faith doesn't increase. That woman's a prayer warrior. My brother and my sister, we have praying parents and grandparents. Does your mom pray, Britain? Here you are. Do your parents pray, Vlad? He says, "Oh, yeah. They're Ukrainian. They pray." And you may say, "Well, I didn't have anybody to pray for me." Good. You can be the first in your generations. [applause] You're planting those seeds for the future. You're interceding.
And finally, number seven, appreciation. This is thanksgiving. Psalm 100:4 says, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving. Go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name." A good friend of mine, Pastor Phil Muny, told me, he said, "Thanksgiving is like the send button on your prayers." You know how when you type up a text, sometimes you send it, sometimes you don't. He said, "Thanksgiving, gratitude is like pushing send because you're already thanking him for it." And so, these are the streams of prayer that the Holy Spirit will guide you in. And at any moment in your prayer life, you'll discern when it's time to move. This way, you can now flow with him. You'll say, "Ah, that's what he's doing. I can see it now." And now you're not fighting him. It won't be rigid. You'll recognize it. But on this point of thanksgiving, we as Christians need to practice this when you go to pray today. Ask him for the healing and then thank him that you're healed. Ask him for the deliverance and then thank him that you're delivered. >> Ask him for the salvation of your loved ones. And then I want you to picture sitting around the table at Thanksgiving with them praying. >> Ask him for your spouse to be saved. And then I want you to get your hopes up and be filled with joy as you imagine sitting next to them in church. Ask him to set your child free from the addiction, from their waywardness, from their compromise, from their worldliness. Ask him to do it in them. And then I want you to picture them preaching the gospel and start thanking God for it. [applause] Ask him to lift the depression and then begin to imagine the day where you're filled with joy. Ask him to remove the fear and then begin to see yourself filled with courage. Ask him for the miracle and then begin to imagine life after the miracle has happened and begin to thank him. And let that thanksgiving produce faith and hope bursting out of your heart. And when you see it that way, you seize what God has for you. Thanksgiving and praise. Lift your hands. Begin praying out loud in the Holy Spirit. Lord, touch your people. Cause them to be people of prayer. Cause them to be people who seek your face, who flow with the Holy Spirit. Teach them the ways of the spirit that they might go to deeper depths in the name of Jesus. And precious Lord, I pray you would ignite in their hearts a fire of passionate prayer. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. And the church said, >> "Amen." >> And I pray that the Lord would continue to make us people of prayer, people who burn with holy fire and who cooperate with the Holy [music] Spirit. And now I want to challenge you to be a part of what God is doing through this ministry.
