Hi friends, welcome back to Daily English Talk. Hey everyone, I'm Tom and this is Lily and we are your English learning friends.
If you are new here, welcome to the family. We are so happy you found us. Every single day we help you speak English with more confidence and today, today is a really special lesson. It really is because today we are talking about emotions. Yes, how to talk about your feelings in English. And this is important because, okay, think about it. You meet someone, they ask how are you and you say, "I am fine." Every time, every single time. But what if you are not fine? What if you are nervous or excited or a little bit confused?
Today, after this lesson, you will have so many new words to describe exactly how you feel in English like a pro. Let's go. But first, we have a question for you today. Ooh, yes. Okay, so later in this video, something happened to me this week. Something that made me feel a very strong emotion. A very strong emotion, yes. Here is the question: What emotion did Tom feel when he found out his coffee shop was closed? Oh no, don't tell them yet.
[laughter]
Was it A, angry, B, devastated, or C, relieved? Relieved, that's funny. Watch the whole video and find out at the end. Write your guess in the comments right now. A, B, or C. Yes, tell us. We want to know what you think.
Okay Tom, so this morning, how are you feeling? For real, not just fine. Honestly, [sighs] I am feeling a little bit tired today. Oh, why? What happened? So yesterday was a really long day. I had a lot of work. I felt very stressed. Stressed, okay, that's one of our words today. Stressed, when you have too much work or too many problems, you feel stressed. Exactly. And then after work, I wanted to go to my favorite coffee shop, you know, the one near the park. Oh yes, I love that place. It was closed. No. Yes, closed. A sign on the door said closed today. No reason, nothing. Oh no, Tom. And I was standing there outside in the cold and I felt, I felt... What did you feel, Tom?
[sighs and gasps]
Devastated. Devastated because of coffee? Listen, it was a long day. I needed that coffee. I was emotionally attached to that coffee. I cannot. I cannot with you. You laugh now, but you would feel the same. Okay, okay. So Tom felt stressed, tired, and then devastated all in one day. It was a journey, an emotional journey. Perfect. And that is exactly what today's lesson is about, emotions. How we feel and how to talk about those feelings in English.
Okay. Let's talk about grammar first, just a little bit, very simple. Don't worry, it's easy. When we talk about emotions in English, we use the verb "to feel" or the verb "to be." Let me show you. We say, "I feel happy" or we say, "I am happy." Both are correct. So you can say, "I feel nervous" or "I am nervous." Same meaning. Now here's a small tip. We usually use "feel" when we want to talk about a temporary emotion, something right now in this moment. For example, "I feel a little tired today." It's just today, not forever. Hopefully not forever.
[laughter]
And we use "I am" when the emotion is a little more general, like, "I am a happy person." That's your personality. Simple, right? I feel plus emotion or I am plus emotion. Practice both. And one more thing, to make emotions stronger, we use words like "really," "so," or "very." "I am so excited." "I feel very nervous." "I am really happy." These little words make a big difference.
Okay, now let's learn the emotions. We have 10 emotions for you today, 10. And Tom and I have a little story for each one. Oh, my stories are very good today. I prepared. He says that every time. This time I mean it. Okay, okay. Emotion number one. Number one is happy. H A P P Y, happy. Happy means you feel good. You feel positive. You are smiling. My story for happy, okay. Last Saturday, I woke up and it was sunny outside. I made my coffee. I sat by the window. My cat came and sat on my lap and I thought, "I am so happy right now." Aw, that is the most peaceful thing I have ever heard. It was perfect. Just a small moment, but I felt so happy. And that's the thing about happy. It doesn't have to be a big moment. Small moments make us happy, too. Now repeat after me. "I feel happy today." Say it. Say it loud.
Okay, number two, sad. S A D, sad. Sad is the opposite of happy. You feel sad when something bad happens or when you miss someone. Aw, my story. Okay, so a few months ago, my old neighbor moved away, Mr. Jenkins. He was 70 years old. He always waved to me in the morning. He always said, "Good morning, Tom. Wonderful day." Aw, he sounds so sweet. Aw, he was. And when he moved, I felt really sad. I still miss him. That's such a nice story, Tom. Yeah. So, sad. You feel sad when you lose something good or someone good. Repeat, "I feel a little sad today" or "I am sad because I miss my friend."
Number three, excited. Excited. E X C I T E D, excited. You don't even need to explain this one. Look at your face.
[laughter]
I know, I know. Excited means you feel a lot of energy. Something good is coming and you cannot wait. When are you excited, Lily? Okay, so last month, I booked a trip, a holiday, a real trip with a plane and a hotel and everything. And the night before, I could not sleep. Too excited to sleep.
[laughter]
I kept checking my bag. Did I pack my passport? Yes. Did I pack it again? Yes. Let me check one more time. Oh no.
[laughter]
I was so excited. My heart was beating fast. I had so much energy. That is excited. Repeat, "I am so excited." "I feel very excited about tomorrow."
Number four. Nervous. N E R V O U S, nervous. Nervous is when something is coming and you are a little bit scared, a little bit worried. Maybe your hands shake, maybe your stomach feels strange.
[laughter]
My story for nervous. Okay, about two months ago, I started this channel with Lily. Yes. And the first day we recorded our first video and before we pressed record, I was so nervous. He was. He kept saying, "Is my hair okay? Is the camera okay? Is everything okay?" I was very nervous. It was my first time on camera. I thought, "What if I say the wrong word? What if I laugh at the wrong time?" You laugh at every wrong time. That's true, but I was nervous. My hands were shaking a little. And look at him now, 73 videos later, not nervous at all. Not even a little. Okay, maybe a little. Repeat, "I feel nervous before my exam." "I am nervous about speaking English." And that is normal. Being nervous is normal. It means you care.
Number five. Angry. A N G R Y, angry. Angry. This is when something happens that you do not like and you feel hot inside. You want to say something or do something. My story for angry? Okay, so I was in a cafe working on my laptop and someone walked in and sat right next to me. The cafe was almost empty. So many seats and they chose a seat right next to me. Why do people do that?
[sighs and gasps]
And then, they started a phone call, a loud phone call and I was trying to focus and I felt so angry. Did you say something?
[sighs and gasps]
No, I just looked at them with this face. The look, I know the look. I was angry, but I stayed quiet. Very British of me.
[laughter]
Repeat, "I feel angry right now." "I was really angry this morning."
Number six. Surprised. S U R P R I S E D, surprised. Surprised is when something happens and you did not expect it. Good or bad, it was not in your plan. Okay, my story. So, 2 weeks ago I came home after work and my apartment was dark. I thought, "Strange." I turned on the light and... What? All my friends were there. They shouted, "Surprise! Happy birthday!" Aw, that is so sweet. I was so surprised. I actually jumped like this. My heart went boom. You screamed a little?
[laughter]
I may have made a small sound, yes. That is surprised, when something is totally unexpected. Repeat, "I was so surprised." "I feel surprised right now." "I did not expect this."
Number seven, scared. S C A R E D, scared. Scared means you feel fear. Something is dangerous or something is unknown and your body says, "Be careful." My story. Okay, I do not like scary movies. I do not watch them, but one night my friend said, "It's not scary. It's just a little spooky." Famous last words. I know. I watched it and in one scene everything was quiet, very quiet, and then suddenly... Yes, like that. I screamed. I threw my popcorn. It went everywhere. Oh, no. I was so scared. My heart was beating so fast. I had to pause the movie and drink some water.
[laughter]
Did you finish the movie? I did not. I turned on all the lights and watched cooking videos until I felt better.
[laughter]
That is so you. Repeat, "I feel scared." "I was really scared last night."
Number eight, embarrassed. E M B A R R A S S E D, embarrassed. Embarrassed is when you do something silly in front of other people and your face goes red and you want to disappear. Oh, I have a story, a very good story, a very embarrassing story. Oh, yes, tell us.
[sighs]
Okay, so about 6 months ago I was in a meeting, very serious meeting. My boss was there, other important people were there, and I was presenting. Okay. And in the middle of my presentation, my phone made a sound, a notification sound, but the sound was a very silly ringtone, a children's song. No! Yes, a very loud, very cheerful children's song in a very serious, very quiet meeting. Tom! Everyone turned and looked at me. My boss looked at me. I looked at my phone. My face was so red.
[laughter]
What did you do? I said, "I'm so sorry." Turned off my phone and tried to continue, but I was so embarrassed.
[laughter]
That is the best story today. I'm glad you enjoy my pain. Repeat, "I felt so embarrassed." "I was really embarrassed in front of my class."
Number nine, proud. P R O U D, proud. Proud is a very good feeling. You did something difficult and you feel strong, you feel good about yourself. My story for proud. Okay, when we reached 5,000 subscribers on this channel, I cried a little. Aw, she did. I saw it.
[laughter]
I was so proud because we work every single day. We plan, we record, we edit, we post every day, and to see the numbers grow, to see your comments and your messages, it means everything. I felt so proud of us, of our community, of every single person who watches and practices with us. And we are so proud of you, too. Every time you practice a new word, every time you leave a comment in English, we see you and we are proud. Repeat, "I feel so proud." "I am really proud of myself today."
And number 10, our last emotion, grateful. G R A T E F U L, grateful. Grateful means you feel thankful. Something good happened or someone helped you and you think, "Thank you. I am so lucky." My story for grateful. Every morning I wake up and before I look at my phone, I think of three things, three things that make me feel grateful. What kind of things? Simple things, like today I thought, "I am grateful for my warm bed. I am grateful for my good health and I am grateful for this community." Aw, that is beautiful, Tom. Because 7,100 people watch us. 7,100 people are learning English with us every day. That makes me feel incredibly grateful. Me, too. So much. Repeat, "I feel grateful today." "I am so grateful for your support."
Okay, drill time. I say a situation, you say the emotion. Ready? Ready. You have a big exam tomorrow. How do you feel? Nervous. You got a new job. How do you feel? Excited and happy and maybe a little nervous. Good. You helped a friend and they said, "Thank you." How do you feel? Proud and grateful. Yes. You forgot your umbrella and it's raining. How do you feel? Aw, sad and a little angry at myself. Perfect. You saw a spider in your room. How do you feel? Scared, very scared.
[laughter]
And you said the wrong word in English class. How do you feel? Uh, embarrassed, but also okay because mistakes help you learn. Excellent.
Now, here is your challenge for today. Go to the comments right now. And tell us, how do you feel today? Use one of our new words. Are you happy, excited, a little tired, nervous about something? Write it in English, just one sentence. "I feel blank today because blank." We read every comment, every single one, so tell us. And if you feel grateful for this lesson, hit the like button.
