A planet is considered to be combust if it is within 10 degrees to 17 minutes of the Sun. There are traditionally two opposing interpretations concerning combust planets.
The most popular interpretation and the oldest interpretation teaches that combust planets are less desirable. Mercury is seen as less intelligent when it's combust and seen as giving one a weak mind or weak skills, weak abilities. It's a weak performer when it's combust.
Some teachings are of the opposite mind, and they see combust planets as extra powerful and something to be envied, citing a combust mercury as a marker for genius. The evidence just does not seem to support either assertion. A combust planet is not less active or able, and the Sun actually seems to enhance certain planets' abilities to some extent. For example, Mars does obviously better when it's closer to the orb of the Sun.
The fact is, we don't see low performance from combust planets. There's just no evidence to support a belief that low intelligence results from, for example, a combust mercury, and we don't experience a lack of love as say, Venus is combust. We can't see planets from a geocentric perspective when they are so close to the Sun, within that 10-degree orb. So, a type of mythology has developed around the idea of combust planets based on this lack of being able to view them from our point of view. But there's just no evidence to support combust planets being either supercool or a drag.
So, I don't pay much attention to combust planets at all in analysis with clients. I just don't see that it has any place in modern or psychological astrology, and it's also often a very disempowering teaching.
Kazemi means when a planet is in the heart of the Sun. It's going to be within an orb of less than 16 minutes of an exact conjunction, so it's really close. This has been said to increase a planet's power and ability. Mercury especially is believed to be more acute, more accurate, just better overall when it is Kazemi.
Kazemi planets are strong, but they do not confer genius like we often hear, especially like we're taught in Eastern or Vedic Astrology. We do see added ability due to Kazemi planets blending closely with the confidence-enhancing qualities of the Sun. Both Mercury and Mars both do well in very close orb to the Sun, but mercury is not automatically going to bless one with a vast intellect when it is Kazemi.
