WHY AM I SO UNLUCKY? | How to be LUCKY

At some point of time, you must have heard these two statements from someone's mouth: "that you are so lucky" or "you are so unlucky." Well, two women have heard these statements many times in their lives. Jessica's 42 years old, a forensic scientist. She had her dream job, a loving husband whom she met at a dinner party, and has two lovely kids. She is financially healthy and almost fulfilled all her dreams in life. She considered herself a lucky person.

On the other hand, Jane is 27 years old. She considered herself unlucky. She used to work for a famous airline as a cabin crew. On her first flight as a cabin crew, she was faced with a drunk man on the flight, and the flight was forced to make an emergency landing. On her second flight, there was a thunderstorm, and her flight was delayed for hours. Most of her flights have faced issues, and her colleagues labeled her as unlucky. People around her feel that she is unlucky because whenever she's around, something bad will happen.

Dr. Richard Wiseman decides to do research to find out if there are truly lucky people who always get the best things in life, just like Jessica, and find out if there are also other people who are really unlucky, just like Jane. After years of research, he concluded that there is a luck factor in everyone. However, it has nothing to do with astrology, star sign, or birth months. Dr. Richard Wiseman's research suggests that there are four key reasons for someone to be lucky. If you are feeling unlucky, understanding the four key reasons may just turn your luck around.

Number one: Maximize chance opportunities. Dr. Richard Wiseman did a very simple experiment. He gathered two groups of people. One group identified themselves as lucky; the other group identified themselves as unlucky. He gave newspapers to the two groups and told them to count how many photos there are in the newspaper. On average, the unlucky group took an average of two minutes to count all the photos, and the lucky group just took seconds. How is that possible? Well, Dr. Wiseman had intentionally placed a message on the second page of the newspaper: "Stop counting. There are 43 photos in this newspaper." And just for the fun of it, Dr. Wiseman placed another message in the middle of the newspaper saying, "Stop counting. Tell the experimenter you have seen this message and get $250."

How did the unlucky group miss the message? Well, the lucky group has a keen eye on seeing opportunities, and whenever they see an opportunity, they will grab it. On the other hand, the unlucky group missed the opportunities because they were too busy looking for the photos in the newspaper. The real reason behind this phenomenon is that the unlucky group live most of their life in tension, stress, and anxiety about everything. Their anxiety blinded them from other opportunities. The lucky group usually stay in a peaceful and calm mind, which enables them to see opportunities. Hence, to be lucky, you must stay in a peaceful and calm mind, keeping yourself open to opportunities and grabbing them when it comes knocking.

Another way to maximize chance opportunities is to have some variety in life. If you pick an apple from the same apple tree every time, eventually the tree will run out of apples. Not only that, but you also have missed the other fruits that are growing on the trees around you.

Number two: Turn bad to good. Imagine you were going to the bank, and suddenly a group of robbers barged into the bank. You heard a shot fired, and you quickly realized that you've been shot in the arm. After the incident, you were hospitalized for a week due to the gunshot wound. Now, if this happened to you right now, would you consider yourself lucky or unlucky? Are you thinking that you were at the wrong place at the wrong time? If you'd only delayed your travel to the bank or if you went on another day, you would not have been shot. Or are you thinking that you were lucky to have only been shot in the hand and only hospitalized for a week? If you'd gotten shot in the head or heart, you would have died. Or you could be thinking that you can get off a week from work.

This is the difference between lucky and unlucky people. Whenever something bad happens to lucky people, they tend to look at the positive aspect of the situation, thinking it could be worse. Whereas for unlucky people, they tend to look at the negative aspect of the situation, thinking, "Why did it happen to me?" In the Olympic Games, the top three finishers will get gold, silver, and bronze. Which position would the athletes feel the happiest, ranking them one to three? If you are thinking the gold medalist will feel the happiest, followed by the silver medalist, then the bronze medalist, you are absolutely wrong. Studies have shown that the bronze medalist feels happier than a silver medalist. A bronze medalist just managed to get onto the podium and win a bronze medal, thus feeling happy to be in the top three. However, a silver medalist is likely to feel more disappointed as he is so close to getting a gold. How the silver medalist is thinking is exactly how an unlucky person would feel. So, to be lucky, think positive, and lucky will come your way.

Number three: Listen to your gut. Sometimes we have a gut feeling or our inner soul tells us not to do something, but we still ignore it, and usually later, we come to realize that we have made a big mistake. Dr. Wiseman says the lucky people always listen to their gut feelings and hunches. In fact, in a survey, ninety percent of people agreed that they followed their gut in choosing a romantic partner, and eighty percent of people agreed that they listened to their gut feelings for their career choices. As much of this is unscientific, we must remember that our unconscious mind is very powerful. It remembers all our past experiences and patterns stored deep in our mind. While talking to someone, we may find the things the person is saying are very logical, but in some situations, we may get a different body language from the speech. Then we still have this gut feeling that what the person is saying seems off, or the person may be lying. And of course, many times your gut feeling proves to be true. Hence, whenever you have a gut feeling, don't ignore it completely. There may be a reason why you are feeling this way.

Number four: Expect good fortune. In the same research study on lucky and unlucky people, Dr. Wiseman came to know that lucky people were very positive and hopeful about their future. Lucky people almost know that they will for sure achieve something huge or great in their life. Unlucky people tend to have low expectations for their lives. When both people who identified themselves as lucky and unlucky were put into the same situation, the outcome was very different. In a separate experiment, people were separated into two different groups. The first group was told to press the red button as soon as they see the light appear on the screen. The additional message to them was that they were told the task would be difficult, and they are to try their best in completing the task. The second group were given the same set of instructions, but the additional message to them was that they are to pretend that they are jet pilots who have lightning reactions. The moment they see the light, they are to quickly press the red button. At the end of the experiment, the second group has a faster reaction time compared to the first group.

Expectations have a lot of power and can influence you in many ways. People with negative expectations usually quit easily, don't try, and don't become successful. Believe in yourself, expect positive things to happen to you, don't quit easily, and you will be successful.
