Okay, here we go. Section six: Fire Life Safety Director Master Class.
Okay, this portion deals with the uh, an alarm on your fire command station; actual alarm going off. What are you gonna do? Unfortunately, uh, most people study uh, what are the 25 or so steps you're gonna take in the event of this, of there being an alarm. Unfortunately, the inspector won't ask you like that. The inspector will say something like this: You are at work; you are the only fire life safety personnel on duty; an alarm goes off at the fire command station. Assume nothing. How will you address the situation? Your panel is now alarming. After he shares that with you, he's going to give you a blank piece of paper; he wants you to write down an outline of your response. Uh, most of us study it in a numerical fashion: the 25 steps in the event of an alarm.
1. Report to fire command station.
2. Acknowledge the alarm at the fire command station.
3. Check panel to see if any other devices have been activated.
4. Contact floor wardens on affected floors: fire floor, floor above, floor below.
5. Activate fire brigade by cell phone or walkie-talkies.
6. Notify the fire department by land line, cell phone, and central station trip.
7. Ensure that all elevators have been recalled and if not, recall them.
8. Ensure that the HVAC systems have shut down; confirm it by your panel, or you can tell a lot of times if the air movement has been shut down anyway.
9. Make an announcement number nine over the PA system uh, about the situation.
10. You begin the evacuation of the fire floor, floor above, and floor below; at least three floors below the affected floors is applicable.
11. Maintain communication with the fire brigade and the floor wardens.
12. Um, have brigade member remain below the fire floor to provide information for the fire department.
13. Ensure lobby doors are open and entrance areas are kept clear; prepped, in other words, prep the lobby for the arrival of the fire department.
14. Have an engineer available for the fire department.
15. Information to be provided for the fire department: the location of the fire, the smoke condition/alarm activation.
16. The number and type of device is activated.
17. The nature of the alarm.
18. Status of the stairways; what stairwells are being used to evacuate; what stairways have standpipe connections, etc., etc.
19. Evacuation status.
20. Elevator status.
21. HVAC status.
22. Status of fire protection impairments in the building.
23. Any other information regarding fire situations.
24. Record the source of all fire-related information.
25. Uh, you should have prepared for the fire department: the floor plan, fire safety plan, master keys, and the big car.
26. And before the fire department leaves, you should reset the fire alarm system when authorized by the incident commander. In fact, I should have mentioned this earlier: you need to be identified quickly as the fire safety director, so you'll need a some kind of fluorescent item: a coat, hat, armband, vest, whatever you have. Uh, study these things; it's between 25 and 30. Uh, again, the way you answer will indicate to the inspector how well you study, how well you prepared, and how well you know, or how proficient you are at being a fire life safety director.
