Thermal Decomposition | Three Different Carbonates

This is magnesium carbonate. Upon intense heating, it will thermally decompose into magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide. And collecting the carbon dioxide into a substance known as lime water—lime water is saturated calcium hydroxide solution—it turns cloudy upon the formation of calcium carbonate precipitate.

This green solid is copper(II) carbonate, and it readily decomposes upon intense heating, releasing lots of carbon dioxide gas. Collected into lime water, which will turn cloudy again, we also form black copper(II) oxide, which accumulates as a powder when heated.

Finally, we're thermally decomposing zinc carbonate to form zinc oxide and carbon dioxide gas, which we're bubbling into lime water, which goes cloudy. When intensely heated, zinc oxide will actually appear yellow, but upon cooling will return back to its original white color.
