Drum machines have played a significant role in industrial music and EBM. They were offering a revolutionary way of making beats that were not possible with traditional drum kits. One of the earliest and most influential uses of drum machines in industrial music was by bands like Tring Grol or Cabaret Volti. They utilized drum machines like the TR808 or the TR 606. Then bands like Front 242, Nider, or DA used drum machines like the Emu Drumulator or the Lin Drum to create danceable beats. Even today, drum machines remain essential tools for producing in industrial. Let me show you my favorites.
If you want that early industrial sound, this is it. The R50e was used by bands such as Frontline Assembly and Ministry. Released in '88, it's a scaled-down version of the R00, but despite the compromises, it sounds surprisingly good. Here's my favorite drum kit on it.
The R8 is a drum machine introduced in '89 by Roland. If I had to buy a drum machine today, it would be this one, and still today, it sounds very, very good. It has been used by bands such as 9in Nails. Here's my favorite drum kit on it, and it sounds like the drums on a famous video game soundtrack that came out in the '90s. The RX7 is a drum machine released in '87. It can be seen as either a more affordable RX5 or the evolution of the RX1 and 15 models. It was a very popular choice in the late '80s and '90s. Here's my favorite sounds on it.
As far as drum machines go, the RY30 is one of the nicest and biggest rivals of the R8. Very, very '80s and '90s industrial sounding. The drum sounds of Skinny Puppy's Last Rights comes to mind when using this. The kick and the snare drums sounds insane.
