I'm going to show you an awesome trick for HDR photography and how to do it in batch automatically. Here you can see all my bracketed images. I did five image sets for each scene. If I zoom out to five photos across, I can see every set of photos perfectly in one screen.
Here's the trick: Ctrl A to select all. Go up to Photo, go to Stacking, and go to the bottom where it says Auto Stack by Capture Time. This dialogue will pop up. I found that 10 seconds works pretty good for me. It says here there will be 34 Stacks. Click Stack.
What this does is automatically make stacks of all your photos based on how close together they were taken, which is pretty genius. With them still all selected, I can now go up to Photo, Photo Merge, and HDR, or press Ctrl H. Now it'll automatically batch process these into HDR raw images in the background. It does take some time to go get a snack and come back when it's done.
Okay, that took 11 minutes on my system. That was for 34 HDRs and they're done. Our image stacks are still selected, and the ones that are the HDR. An easy way to filter that out and select just the HDR for editing is go to Text and type in the word HDR. And now all that we see here are the photos with HDR added onto the file name, which are brand new files that Lightroom created.
I would suggest selecting all with Ctrl A and then press number seven to give them a yellow color label. This makes it easier to find later instead of going to Text. So with all of them selected, I'm going to press D for Develop. Make sure my batch is turned on and I'm going to do some basic adjustments that I do to pretty much all my HDR. We just drop the highlights, raise the shadows, raise the textures, the clarity, the color, and boost up the saturation of the blue and calibration. Be sure your sharpening is turned up to where you want and with a little bit of noise reduction based on what your ISO was set to.
And from there, I'll of course start doing my individual edits and color corrections to each photo. And that's how you can automatically group and HDR process all your photos at once. Follow me online for more helpful tips.
