Hey everybody, welcome to the Rosley Elliot show. Today, I want to check out something with you called "Wings for Mary," part one and two.
As you know, we go all around the world to explore music, to explore the psychology and philosophy thereof. I have a master's in counseling psychology, I've worked as a therapist and a full-time teacher, and I just love bringing education and entertainment to you, pulling out what we can from the musical compositions and the lyrics and see how it can inspire us, how it can help us on our journey for personal growth, and how music can bring healing to our mental health and to various parts of our life.
So, what am I gonna, what, what do, what do I need to know about "Wings for Mary"? What would I need to know beforehand? I want to go in as blind as possible, so I guess we're going to find out together. But let me know why this song is important to you if you've ever heard it, why Tool is important to you, what about them you love. And here we go, without further ado.
That swishing sounds like [Music] wings in a way. The bell be poignant. I'm going to start this over. Okay, I want to point a couple of things out here. Music impacts us, as we know, right? In various ways, depending on on where we're at mentally and emotionally in that every moment. What we've experienced in life, the things we associate with it. The swishing to me sounds like wings. This could be because I see the title "Wings for Mary," and my mind is going there. That bell-like, resonating, echoing, rhythmic element at the beginning sounds very interesting. It, it, it brings in a setting that is somber to me. Gloom or reflection that makes me think of fluttering or a racing heartbeat. Ooh, the note that that guitar riff just ended on matches with the bell, and that's interesting. It going from a very, very um, steadfast beat that echoing to the staccato that the guitar riff just brought in to now meeting on the same note. That is interesting. I feel it makes me think of heartbeats and perhaps a heartbeat racing and then coming to a stop, flatlining in a very different way than what we would be used to. Just my thoughts.
[Music]
Go you believe could see you believed in me [Music] compassion [Music] and un [Music] compromise and [Music] right when you're eyes [Music] [Applause] [Music] was you who prayed for me [Music] so what am I to be worthy? Those low notes, they're getting me. [Music] That subtle grit and rasp to his [Music] voice. The musical composition is phenomenal. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
Daylight dims, leaving cold. Fluorescent. That ascension in notes was neat. Before the word "dim," please, for selfish question, what am I to say to all these ghouls tonight? She told a lie. Might have told a lie, but never didn't have a life. Didn't have a life, but surely saved. All right, now it's time for us to let you go. Oh, I can't wait to listen to part two. I want to listen to part two barely soon. In this video, without going into too much, but I don't want to skip too far ahead without having digested this just for a moment with you guys. Tool is an amazing. I don't know nearly enough of them. I know I listen to "Sober," and that is just a song that is stuck with me. Whenever it plays, whenever we're doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I can't help but just feel excited and ignited. Somehow, I feel like I've done another Tool song on this channel, and I can't think of it right now, but I want to focus on this. The little that I know about Tool is that they are phenomenal musicians. The way they play together, from the bass lines to the guitar riffs, to the story that was being told with the musical composition alone. I know, a lot of times I focus on the lyrics. I don't want to take away, however, from what music can do for us. As I mentioned in the beginning, from that rhythmic bell with the echo, that resonating feeling, that resonating sound, to the guitar meeting the bell at the same note during the introduction, made me think of a heartbeat in a way. Made me think of that, um, the staccato of of a of a racing heartbeat. Now finally meeting the the line that indicates death, meeting at the same on the same note. Um, there was something somber, something reflecting, something that made you want to pause and listen. This is not background music. This is not the type of music where I feel like I can just, you know, maybe if I listen to it often enough, it can be a fun track just to have playing. But in a way, it's so profound that it makes you pause what you're doing. Right? Music is so powerful. The way that impacts us, the major notes, the minor notes, the emotions it evokes. And again, to a degree, very subjective, of course, because it is art, because we all have our own story, personality, and experiences. But it pulled me in. And then the way that there was this ascension of notes before he spoke of the daylight dimming, and that was interesting because in a way, thinking of ascension, maybe would fit with somebody dying and getting their wings. But perhaps also in contrast to daylight dimming, something is ascending. Those notes were climbing as the daylight is dimming and going down, right? So we have a lot of poetry here, cross, multifaceted, cross-layered. If we look at the musical composition, what the music, the notes are doing, what the instruments are doing. The lyrics said, "You believed, you believed in movements none could see." Made me think, does she, does this imply that Mary, this song is called "Wings for Mary," I'm sorry, not Maria, "Wings for Mary." Does this imply that Mary believed in movements, um, none could see? As in angels? Did she believe in angels? Did she believe in the supernatural and ghosts and what the regular eye cannot see? Or perhaps that she believed in movements none could see, as in that whatever was happening in her life or is happening in her life was a movement for a purpose? You know how sometimes people go through hard times and they believe that this is all happening for a reason? They're seeing movements, they're seeing maybe the hand of God or something divine or something orchestrating what is going on in their life for a purpose, and others can't see it. "You believed in me." Now I'm seeing a relational element here. The song addressing someone, perhaps Mary. Is this Mary? Is this his mother? Because it says later on, "What have I done to be a son to an angel, a passionate spirit, uncompromised?" And this is interesting because later he speaks of, "She never told a lie." Well, might have told a lie, but never lived one. To me, this must have been a person that, or is a person that is, um, a person of integrity. The kind of person that we gladly remember, who we will definitely miss, who good things are said of. Boundless and open, beautiful description here. Vacant, broken. Okay, we have a contrast here from that passionate spirit, the boundless and open, where where life is limitless, boundless, to now being vacant, empty, not occupied. Powerful and painful words, though. Vacant, broken, boundless, open. That contrast that we have in life where we feel immortal, we feel like nothing can phase us, and we realize, man, this is hard. Life is hard. There's things happening that are breaking me, that make me feel empty and vacant. Fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see. And here too, a contrast from addressing this person, Mary, and saying that she believed, "You," a second person singular here, "You believed in movements no one could see," to now say, "She fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see." What does that mean? Is this movement as in also spirits and angels? Still referring to something that cannot be seen by others? Following by movements I wouldn't see? Perhaps something was happening, something was moving, changing that I couldn't perceive? Maybe a sickness? Maybe someone else who was harming her? If this is his mother, because he speaks of being a son to an angel, perhaps saying, "I didn't see what was happening with you. I didn't see what was causing you to to fall, to to cause you that pain." And I think as a child, most of the time, all that we see is our parents. These are our parents, right? First, we think we're part of them, then we realize we're our own person, and they disappear. They, they become an accessory, right? They're parents, but as adults with our own children and marriages and jobs and lives, they become less mom and dad, and they become more perhaps a peer or a, a friend, or maybe still a parent to a degree, but we need less of them. They become less needed. They become a memory. We all are going to become somebody's memory. And I think for a child to see their parent going from passionate and boundless to broken and vacant, that's hard to watch. But a lot of times, we don't really see what they're all going through. And you, we only know that when we become older, older, and we have children, and we, we realize that this cycle is repeating itself, and we will become a memory, and they will no longer need us at some point. "What have I done to be a son to an angel? What have I done to be worthy?" This is so beautiful. "Daylight dims, leaving cold fluorescence." And now daylight dimming to me implies also again, death. The day coming to an end. But more so than that, daylight dimming, a metaphor for life dimming, us coming to the point of death of the light dimming permanently, leaving cold fluorescence, perhaps a hospital. The fluorescent lights. "Please forgive the selfish question." And this too is interesting. When someone in our life is facing death or ill or going through hard times, we will still have questions. We will still have our own emotions. And it's, it's a fine line to not become selfish, to be there for that person selflessly, to comfort them because they're the ones in pain, but also not to completely forget that this too does affect us. We have questions. And here too, I see a very human behavior, a human response of some. But ghouls look creepy, right? Some of them less, some of them more. We see them as statues on ancient cathedrals and buildings. They sometimes almost have a demonic-like look. Um, they are believed in popular legend, it says, to be inhabitants of inhabitants of burial grounds and other deserted places. Okay, so this, this person, this son, is saying, "What am I supposed to say to these ghouls?" In a way, to me, that implies all these living people who have questions, who may want to know what's going on. I see that as someone grieving their parent, and they now have to deal with all the people that have questions, right? When somebody dies, life doesn't end. And it's unfair. I'm, I'm a little emotional. Um, it's, it's unfair. And it is in stark contrast to those angels. "What am I supposed to say to them?" "She never told a lie." "Well, might have told a lie." And this part I really like. To me, feels very human. It feels very much like, "She never told a lie." Okay, hold up. Let me be realistic. This was a person. She might have told a lie, right? She wasn't perfect. She might have. I'm going to be honest, I'm going to be real. But never lived one. And that's what mattered. Ah, guys, it's beautiful to be able to try to speak to that loved one that has gone and to say, "See, like, if you could see me now, right? Do you see? I'm all right." "It's time for us to let you go." And this ultimately, this put a, um, this tied up for me that last sentence, that last phrase. Why, um, I believe this is about life and death and about someone dying. I love that the instrumentation and the chord progression and the whole composition is not just one of constant strings and wing-like reflection. There's songs like that, and they're beautiful too. But I love what the rock does here. I love what the electric guitar and the drums do here. I love what the staccato of this composition does because to me, when I'm thinking death, when I'm thinking people getting sick, when I'm thinking losing somebody, it's heavy. It's hard, and it's painful. I want to keep listening with you. This is going to be a longer video, but here we go. From "10,000 Days," "Wings" part two. [Laughter] Sounds like a storm in the background. Listen to the tales and how we follow the path of the day. Riv, his voice is incredible. Our way into the arms of the savior. Fulfilling all the trials and the tribulations. None of us actually, wow.

Ignorance, sincere me. Someone of you bled by choices. Hypocrites see. But the collective Judas who [Music] could me [Music] oh [Music] [Music] I the [Music] down [Music] wow. High the way, but our lives are up on the ground. You are the light, the way. Only [Music] pray. Days, the fire is long enough. You're going home. [Music] The only one who can hold your head up high. Shake your fist at the gate. Stand and I come home now. Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time now. My choice now. Kill me. M. Kill me. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] Oh, [Applause] [Music] [Music] Give me, give me. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] You are light with the they went and reached. [Music] [Applause] [Music] As I am, my way, and my arrogance. Believer, you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence. She, my son, unconditional one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
Daylight dims, leaving cold fluorescence. Difficult to see you in this light. Please, for this bold suggestion, should you see your maker face tonight? Look in the eye. Look in the eye. Tell I never lived a life. Never took a life. Would trust it's time for you to bring me [Music] home. It sounds like wings. Gosh, dude, I'm so grateful I get to be alive and listen to this incredible music with you guys. I've been exploring so many amazing artists and songs and bands over the last few years, couple of years doing this. I mean, wow. This composition, musically, not even lyrically right now, was a masterpiece. I mean, the entire arrangement from the wing-like sounding, sorry, I'm like hitting my microphone, from the wing-like sounding effects in the beginning, the swooshing, wing-like vibe, to that bell, almost like when someone is passing, a church bell, right, as we're going to the cemetery, or the, the heartbeat, right? That rhythmic element that made me think of, um, the heartbeat. Them meeting on the same notes, uh, as if a machine flatlining, uh, or as if meeting, meeting the maker, going home, right? It met the notes met in the beginning. His singing, more restricted, I feel also significant of what grief does. These different phases of grief where we are either in shock, or where we hold back, where we're restricted, we can't scream, we can't cry, we're just keeping it in on lock and key, perhaps when everything first happens, or we first get a diagnosis, or we first lay our loved one to rest, before it all breaks free and true grief can then flow, true healing can flow. It felt restricted. It felt muffled. It felt soft and gentle, though, not just muffled in the sense of holding back, perhaps holding back, but also in the sense of being calm. And there's something they say when a person dies, I've heard, I've heard, um, that sometimes some encourage not to rush that process when you're in the presence of someone who has just died, to allow yourself to be in that moment, and to not just rush for the next thing. That there's something almost sacred, like when a spirit, when the person's spirit leaves your body, or when a person's body breathes your last. And so this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this is a powerful introduction and way to start and phase in with "Wings" part one. To then go into that staccato, the electric guitar, the rhythmic elements, the drums coming in heavy. It felt so fitting to what grief really looks like, what death really looks like. It's not all just, you know, laid to rest and close the coffin and right. Grief is painful, and it's messy, and death is hard, and there's no easy way to work these things and talk about these things. And to have a song like this, though, I feel like this gets, if we're going to get as close as we can to the idea of death and grief and all the ways that come with healing and with grieving and with suffering and with dealing with death and things being finite and losing loved ones and the pain and the questions that come with dealing with all the ghouls, I feel like this would be it. If there is ever a song to really dive into that, it's this. And then in "Wings" part two, here it just gets even deeper, and it just takes off. The lyrics still powerful. We listen to the tales and romanticize how we'd follow the path of the hero. Very powerful. And I love how even poetically, there's still addressing things that are very human, right? In in part one, it spoke of, well, you know, she never lived, well, maybe she lied, but she didn't live a lie. And it speaks of these different things that we can relate to as humans, the questions we have, the things we're struggling with, the, the someone looking different in in a certain light, in the fluorescent light of a hospital, perhaps. Even the talk now about how we romanticize the heroes, and it's true, right? We do that. I have, at least, you tell me in the comments if you ever have. We romanticize tales, we romanticize what death might look like, we romanticize what people did who have come and gone, and what we would do if we were a hero. "Boast about the day when the river overruns, how we rise to the height of our halo." Okay, so how we would basically rise to our holiness, to our halo, right? To being holy and to being a saint. How in those days then we will rise to it. And I think that too is, um, I guess there's a tragedy and irony to it because we have all these ideas of what we think we should be or what it would look like when our time comes for something or when we face a challenge, but we only truly know what we're made of when that challenge actually comes. We can imagine and romanticize all day long. And to me, this implies also that Mary, his mom, I believe, really is what I'm gathering from this. Later, I think he says her whole name, Judith, was it Judith Mary? I don't want to say the wrong, the wrong name. Um, to me, this also implies that whereas many people may romanticize being a hero and what it would look like to be a saint, to rise to the height of a halo, um, she really was one. She really was beautiful and divine is the picture I'm getting here. "Listen to the tales as we rationalize." So earlier we spoke of romanticizing, now we're rationalizing our way into the arms of the savior. Oh, and that to me, in a way, addressed religion and maybe even called it out a little bit, um, how we're all rationalizing our way, right? Various religions, various theologies, we all rationalize how our arms into our, ourselves into the arms of a savior. We all want to be saved, we all want to be loved. And maybe we're rationalizing our way into that type of salvation or into heaven, feigning all the trials and the tribulations, pretending, um, that we know all these things we've overcome, but we've never been there, not like you. And I think he's addressing his mom because you have been there. You've been through the trials and tribulations. Many of us may be feigning, oh, all the things that I've accomplished and hardships I've done. She actually did. And she also is there now in the afterlife. She knows what it's like. We all can romanticize and wonder all day long, what is it going to be like? What is heaven going to be like? What does salvation really look like? But she actually has stepped past that threshold. "Ignorant siblings in the congregation gather around, spewing sympathy. Spare me." And here again, a, every human moment that I'm seeing here of someone who is grieving and hurting and saying, "Hey, we're at this funeral, all these people gathered who are just hypocrites, they're spewing their sympathy. I'm sorry for your loss." Maybe literal siblings, his siblings, her siblings, I don't know. Or just siblings in the sense of, you know, because it goes with spewing sympathy, great alliteration there. Maybe, uh, people just, you know, that are siblings also in the faith sense, right? When you're a Christian, for example, they call each other brothers and sisters of Christ. Are these fellow Christians, fellow believers? Maybe not literal siblings who are spewing sympathy. Sympathy, spare me. Right there's this frustration and this anger of, "None of you could hold a candle up to her. You all want to be all holy and righteous. You all want to feign your tribulations, and you all act like you can rationalize yourself into heaven. You weren't like her. You are not like my mom. None of them can even hold a candle up to you." "Blinded by the choice." These hypocrites won't see. So basically, perhaps blinded by choice, what does that mean? They're blinded by choice. They're choosing, maybe to see themselves a certain way, or they're making certain decisions, they're blinded by them. They're hypocrites. "But enough about the collective Judas." And that is interesting too, right? A lot of religious references here. Judas being the one who betrayed Jesus. Collective Judas, this group, right? Maybe of hypocrites and of liars in the church. "Who wouldn't, who could deny you were the one? Who could deny you were the one who illuminated your little piece of the divine?" So basically saying, we all know, like, who could deny that you were really divine? That you illuminated the piece that you had, um, in "This Little Light of Mine." In that part, that's a, right? A song very known in the Christian community. "This Little Light of Mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine." And I can only imagine that maybe this is the song she taught him or sang to him. "This Little Light of Mine, a gift you passed on to me. I'm going to let it shine to guide you safely on your way." That also, perhaps a reflection of what people do when someone passes, lighting a little candle to help them, you know, into the afterlife. "Your way home." That part that got me good. "What are they going to do when the lights go down without you to guide them all to Zion?" Right? A lot of religious references here. "Little Light of Mine," "Going to Zion." "When the rivers overrun." That was mentioned in the beginning. "Other than tremble, incant." Okay, so we think of trembling, right? In the presence of God, when there's angels, when it's holy, when you tremble, you're in awe, you're in fear, you're perhaps reverent, you have reverence. And here it may be saying, "What are they going to do without you? You were this divine person. You were an angel. What are you, what are they going to do without you guiding them, without you helping them somehow?" "High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground." And this is interesting too, because in scripture, in biblical scripture, it speaks about, you know, that God's ways are higher than ours. It speaks about following God, following Jesus in particular, in Christianity, is a narrow way. Here he says, "High is the way." Makes me think of heaven. Perhaps it's high. "Your eyes are, but our eyes are upon the ground." Right? When you're grieving, when somebody dies, we look to the ground because of grief, right? We're crying, we're cry, we are crying. Maybe we're looking down on the ground where the person is being buried. "You were the light and the way." Interesting here, two Christian references. In scripture, we find references like Jesus being the way, the way and the light and the truth. And here he's saying, "You are the light and the way." "They'll only read about." "I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out." And then here, "10,000 Days," fitting because I think that's the name of the album. And their imagery on their album cover is very interesting too. Something that I think also is an ancient, um, depiction. I need to study it more. I don't know all the details about it, but a face that is so multi-dimensional is interesting. I think we see that in various religions, these spiritual beings. You have a face in the front, also two on the side, eyes, you know, the, the third eye, the, the evil eye. There's a lot of different religions and theories on that. And where we see imagery like this. But when we look at Christianity, I, we also see beings in scripture and Revelation when it talks about the heaven and the spiritual world where it speaks of beings that had like multiple faces or heads and stuff. So what exactly they meant by it, I don't know enough about yet, but it's interesting that imagery. And it's interesting they're calling the album "10,000 Days." And to now say, "10,000 days in the fire is long enough. You're going home." Maybe referencing Purgatory. "You're the only one who can hold your head up high. Shake your fist at the gates, saying, 'I have come home now. Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.'" Right, the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended." Really holding her in high regards and saying she was a pillar of faith. She had so much faith. "It's time now. Give me my wings." And that part, ooh. You know, and there was a time growing up, maybe, where I would have thought, "Okay, somebody shaking their fist at the heaven and saying, 'Give me my wings.' Is that not allowed? You know, you don't do that. You know, uh, it's not ours to tell God." But as my journey in faith and with faith in religions and with God is is is changing and growing, if you will, um, and I have become more bold to ask questions. There's something very powerful here when you have a human being where, unlike Mary, who now, what does he say? Not like you, who has been there, now who has passed on. All of us, what we are doing is just believing or philosophy and theorizing. We don't know. It's all a matter of belief. And so there's something beautiful and powerful to me about having the courage to ask questions and to shake our fists and to say, "What?" And honestly, we do see that even in scripture. Jacob wrestling with the angel of the Lord, right? There's, there's elements even in scripture where there are people that are saying, "What the f, God?" Like, you know, um, but here it's not even shaking my hand or shaking her fist at the heaven saying, "Why? You know, did I die or why did I get sick or whatever happened with her?" You know, it's more so saying, "It's time for my wings now. My life. I actually have seen tribulation where many hypocrites want to talk about all the trials and tribulations." Right? Also that could be a reference to the hymns and gospels, right? We sing about our trials and tribulations, and many have seen them. Plenty of those writers of those gospels and spirits had seen trials and tribulations. But I think he's here also pointing out many even in religious circles want to talk about all the things they've overcome. She actually died. She actually has experienced the ultimate suffering, if you will, and the ultimate transition. And to now, with that type of courage, say, "Hey, fetch me the son, the father, and the Holy Spirit." I could see some people being like, "Oh, that's blasphemous. You don't talk to God like that." But I almost see an element of of courage here. And I want to believe if God is really God, and he is really omnipotent and omnipresent and omniscient like the Christians claim, then I think he can handle that, you know, a soul who has suffered in their life, who has died, now saying, "I'm here, and it's time. It's time. Like, all this suffering, all this pain, it's time to give my wings." And that demand, almost, I find that again, where in the past I might have been like, "We know, are we allowed to talk like that?" Now it's more like, there's something powerful about having that type of faith, that type of mindset to say, "Hey, it's time." Um, "You're the light and the way. You're the light and way that they will only read about." So that's back to what was referenced earlier. "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance. Burden of proof tossed upon the believers." And this is interesting. Was he like this wayward son? Burden of proof, a burden, right? Tossed on the believers, right? Maybe the one that they would want to pray for. He is set in his ways and arrogant. "You are my witness, my eyes, my evidence." And that's beautiful. Maybe this is a way of saying she really knew him, as his mom. She was his witness. She spoke for him. She was his eyes. She, she saw for him. She, um, guided him. She knew him. His evidence, you know, of who he really is. "Judith Marie, unconditional one." And, uh, really, really a love song to mom. And this perhaps also his way of grieving her loss. This is what I think is happening or has happened here. "Daylight dims, leaving cold fluorescent." And now we're having these elements again that we spoke of earlier. "It's difficult to see you in this light. Please forgive this bold suggestion." And for when part one went from a bold question about dealing with the ghouls, now it's a suggestion. "When you see your maker's face tonight, look him in the eye." Again, that boldness, you know what I mean? Like that's beautiful in my mind, right? To me, I find that empowering to to imagine you could look in your maker's eye and tell him, "I never lived a lie. I never took a life. I saved one. It's time for you to bring me home." Gosh. And you know, as much as even in my mind, I'm thinking of people who weren't angels, who may be going home soon, I don't know when their time will come, even in my own life. And they were not necessarily angels. I do want them to be able to make it home, you know, if there is a heaven, if there is an afterlife, I would wish that for them, for them to make it home, for them to finally get their wings, where it was a life of suffering and addiction and disorders and turmoil. I would want my loved ones to get their wings. And so to say so boldly, "Look him in the eye, your maker, tell him, I never lived a lie. I never took a life. Right? I didn't break those commandments. I didn't live a lie. I didn't take a life. I saved one." And I think this is his way of saying also, "You saved me." His mom saved his life. "It's time for you to bring me home." Hallelujah. So a lot of religious, a lot of Christian references, but a powerful song to really communicate grief and to make such a beautiful tribute to someone he loves dearly, but also to deal with some of those questions and some of that anger and some of that, yeah, that these, these, these experience that comes with losing a loved one. It's crazy. This is, and the musical composition so beautifully carried us through all of that. The, not even just the stages of grief, death, what death is like. It's hard and it's raw. And it's, this was phenomenal. This is a masterpiece. This was long, but I hope it was worth it for you guys. What do you think? Comment below, subscribe, and I'll see you on the next ride.
