Why Ice Cream Is More Popular In Cold Countries | Rory Sutherland

Transcription

The biggest ice cream consumption in Europe is in, I think, Russia and Sweden. You'd automatically think it would be Italy or somewhere with a hot climate.

But actually, the thing that drives ice cream consumption, quite interesting, isn't temperature, it's sunshine. So if you live in a culture where it's only occasionally sunny, sunshine prompts people to buy ice cream. You'd think it'd be temperature. It isn't.

So the Swedes, the Scandinavians, are actually the biggest consumers because, uh, you know, when the sun breaks through briefly, they immediately go wild, take off all their clothes, sunbathe in the middle of Stockholm half naked, and go and buy an ice cream. Very strange.

I mean, it sounds fun to be honest. Let's not knock it. [Music]
