Hey guys, the number one question I get asked is, "How do I grow my hair out?" So that's what we're doing today.
If you've been following me for a while, you probably know what I call the trio. The trio is the three most important products everyone should be using, no matter what. These three products will protect your hair from roots to end, which is super important for growing your hair out. Because the number one obstacle to growing your hair out is not hair growth, it's actually keeping the length that you have. Damaged hair will break off at the end, costing you length, so your hair gets shorter. It doesn't matter how fast your hair grows if your hair is breaking off, you will not get any length. So let's get into it. These are the three products everyone should be using for growing out healthy hair.
The first thing is professional shampoo. Drugstore brands will not cut it. They will not get you results. If you care about the way your hair looks, it's night and day. You must, must, must use a professional shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo cleanses your scalp and roots so they're healthy and free of buildup. The conditioner is to protect your hair by hydrating it and sealing the cuticle. For shampoo, you only want to apply it to your roots and scalp. Conditioner is the opposite. You want to start with your ends, move it up to your mids, and never do your scalp. If you put it up here, it'll feel too oily, dirty, and heavy. It's not going to feel good.
The second product you need is a leave-in conditioner. This is totally separate from a regular conditioner. Some people think you only need one or the other, not true. You want both. Regular conditioner is great, but it doesn't do anything between washes. That's where the leave-in conditioner comes in. It's a light, portable version that can protect your hair all day long. You want to use this after every single shower. Towel dry your hair first, though. Never put products on dripping wet hair because the product is going to come right out with the water. For fine and medium hair, I usually do about eight sprays, but only on your mids and ends. I don't put it up here because it's just too heavy, it's going to weigh your hair down and feel gross. If you have coarse hair, your hair drinks this right up. You can put it everywhere and you can use up to like 12 sprays.
The third and final product you must be using is an oil treatment. This is for your ends. Remember, your ends are the most brittle and damaged part of your hair. They need extra attention to keep them healthy. Oil treatments protect and hydrate your ends. They're actually going to penetrate your hair, hydrate it from the inside, and then form a barrier to lock the moisture inside. But with oil treatments, you need to watch out. It's really easy to put too much on there so it feels oily and gross. So this is one of those times where less is more. You can always put more on, you can't really take it off. So here's how you use it. I'll take like a half of a pea-size amount on my palm, rub your palms together. Your hands should not be glistening, they shouldn't be wet. If they're wet, then you use too much. Then you want to take your hands to work the oil through your ends only. Do your ends. In the beginning, when most of it's gone, then you can go up and do your mid-shaft, but never, ever, ever do your roots. If you do your roots, it will feel oily and gross, I promise you. If you have dry, coarse hair, that's probably not going to be enough for you. So do that two or three times until you find that sweet spot where your hair starts to feel soft and shiny.
So that's your routine for hair growth. Remember, the key is to protect every inch of your hair from roots to ends. From here, you can put whatever styling products you want in your hair and it'll be just fine. The one thing you need to watch out for, though, is heat damage. Even with this routine, heat damage can still damage your hair. So if you're using a blow dryer, use a blow dryer heat protectant. If you're using an iron, make sure you use a heat protectant designed specifically for the heat of an iron.
