Anthropic leaking its source code for cloud code is the best marketing they have had in years. And honestly, I think it was on purpose.
Yesterday, a security researcher saw that Anthropic had leaked a map file in their m registry. Basically, a file that shows you where source code could be and you can go download zips and cloudflare servers and things like that. And don't get me wrong, it was a lot. 512,000 lines of code, 1900 script files. I mean, 44 features and 20 of them were unreleased. But that's the interesting part.
Source maps don't just end up in production by accident. Someone has to change the build config file. And what was leaked is fully built features behind compile flags. Tomagotchi pet systems, rarity tiers hard-coded in April 1st, and always on background agent called Chyros, a 30-minute autonomous planning mode. And every single tech outlet is writing about it. Millions in marketing for free. And 10 days ago, they sent legal notice to Open Code for this exact codebase. and then all of a sudden it just ships to npm.
I could be wrong. This could be a bun bug code and a tired engineer that let this happen. But there's something important to understand. Even if you take all of this today, guess what? You still need a model to run it on. You still need security features. You still need customers and clients. You need to apply the knowledge that you learn from all of this to some sort of action that creates value.
