One of the biggest barriers to shooting proficiency is going out to the range, taking time and money to go to the range. I have to drive an hour, I have to pay range fees, I have to pay ammunition costs, and I have to take time off of work or from family to go.
The solution to this is the Unit Nine pistol from Unit Solutions. A lot of anticipation around this product, and I've been super stoked to get it. Finally, we have it, and we've been playing around with it, and it does not fail to impress. Love it.
So, this is it. This is it. It looks like a Glock 19. That's what it's kind of modeled after. It's not exactly a Glock 19, obviously, but you can see very similar features to it. Biggest things that I love about it, it is so realistic to a regular pistol. The blowback is not exact, but it's very close. It's better than airsoft and better than Simunition, in my opinion.
You're not dealing with a firearm whatsoever, so you can take this thing anywhere. I can shoot this because of the projectile it shoots, I can shoot this in my house. I can shoot at targets with a cardboard backer, it's not punching through. And, quite frankly, it just gets me more reps at a lower cost per round. And look, we are not paid by these guys to do this. So, this is just like for me to you. I think it's a superior product to a lot what's out there on the market.
Now, some of the cons, it has a hefty upfront price. It's about the same price of buying a real gun. So, people seem to be complaining about that to me. And this is my argument. Well, yes, the upfront cost of the hardware is expensive, similar to firearm. But then, the cost per round, the cost per round is about 7 cents compared to a 9 mm, which is 20 to 30 cents, depending if you're buying retail or wholesale or even your 556 rounds which are 40 to 60 cents a round plus all the taxes that are coming if you live in California some of the some of the blue cities where they're just adding all these firearms taxes. This is a way to continue training a lot without the lead exposure and without the cost. So upfront cost lower over time.
So the coolest thing about this is it's not a firearm so even though I treat it like a firearm because that's good practice. I don't have to worry about if my family comes over and grabs a hold of this thing. I don't have to worry about accidentally sweeping somebody when I'm learning. I don't have to worry about my finger being on and off the trigger because it's not life and death. Of course I want to avoid those things but it's a much safer way to train. It's safe for new shooters. It's safe for kids to practice on. Really the only thing you'd want to do is when you're firing is wear some eye pro and that's about it. You don't need ear pro and you don't need to worry about your walls and windows going out. Although I wouldn't shoot them out windows because depending on your window it may may break them but the the model itself that we're using this unit 9 the weight of it is almost identical to the weight of this Glock 19 here. In fact is this feels so much like a loaded pistol right now that it's hard to tell just by the weight that I'm using it.
Pulling back feels similar to a firearm. Airsoft a lot of times it feels like a cheap plastic. The internals are completely different. This one doesn't the trigger is the same amount of slack that's in my Glock trigger. The sights are almost the same. They fit all the holsters of my Glock. It's pretty much interchangeable. The magazine this is where a lot of the magic happens. Without the magazine in the weight changes back to the empty Glock. Airsoft a lot of times this is all just plastic and the weight is all in the magazine. So, until you put this in, it's not the same weight and the balance is off. All the weight is in the metal up here and the polymer down here similar to your Glock. And then there's more weight in here from your CO2 and that's also similar to the full weighted mag. So, the realism is very accurate and it makes you feel like you're training just like you would in any other any other range. So, I can practice my dry fire reps, but then when I'm ready, I can also practice my live fire reps in the comfortability of my own home not worrying about any any kind of safety issues. It's a it's a really easy setup.
So, I keep talking about how the weight is identical and some of you at home might be saying, "Well, why does that matter? Reps are reps." Well, the fact is those little differences, the the weight of the spring, the weight of the slide in the gun itself, that matters for realism. For instance, I used to carry a machine gun when I was in the military and when I would fire with blanks, I was able to belt out an entire 100 rounds standing almost neutral because there was no recoil. Shooting blanks is fun. You can shoot it one-handed. There's no recoil. And I would train with blanks over and over and over again. And then guess what would happen? I'd go to the live fire range and I'd start belting out rounds, but I would have this muscle memory of standing in a neutral position and immediately would rock me back and I would go, "Oh, crap. I have to get back into this." So, there was a massive difference of shooting blanks versus live fire. And the same thing when you're training with like cheaper, lighter weight guns, maybe like airsoft, it it's it it little tiny details build in your muscle memory habits. When you roll over the gun to rack it, you have a tiny light pinch if it's plastic and and there's no spring inside. So, you just lightly pull. And then you go to your real gun and you go to rack it and you're like, "Oh crap, this spring is so much tighter. I have to pull so much harder." It builds up scars, training scars. And these scars you're not really going to notice until you're either firing it for live or it's real life. So, you're almost degrading your own training by getting in bad reps. So, very important that the weight is as identical as possible.
Another piece on this is the trigger. If the trigger's different than my normal trigger, then I'm going to have a different way of pulling. So, my grip can overcome a lot of negative trigger pulls, but if the slack is different and then I go on to my real gun and the slack is different, then I'm going to have a different trigger pull. The round may go off early. The The round may not go off at all. I may short stroke the trigger. It's really important that when you are training, it you're training with the most realistic training tools that you can get.
And when speaking to that realism, we're even talking about our accessories. So, my my flashlight on the Glock, I can simply take it off or even buy another one and and put it onto this slide. And now I get even the touch points for practicing at night. And that's a big thing because so many people don't get night training whatsoever. Uh the the people who do, it's it's infrequent. It's once a quarter or maybe even less than that. And so, having the ability to dry fire my flashlight on and off every single time and taking my shots with a flashlight, that's really important. I've got slide cuts here if I run in RMRs or any kind of other red dots. And I have the same modification ability. It even has suppressor sights that come with it. So, if I do want to put my RMR, it's ready to go for that. And you know, they come up with a with a whole bunch of solutions to the accessories that that they have. Right now it's just a Glock, but that's that's a more common gun and and the word on the street is they're coming out with a few more. I don't know which ones, but I know they're going to be coming out with more pistols pretty soon.
So, you know, the bigger argument that people have is just the cost of it and it and it was kind of interesting to me because people won't hesitate to buy ammunition and go train. That that's that's a cost that they just consider is part of the game. But then all of a sudden you say, "Hey, this is a $600, $700 training tool." And they freak out and they go, "Oh, well, that that's not interesting to me." Well, what if what if I told you you could spend $700 on ammunition for your pistol, but you're only going to go to the range once a month because that's all you have time for? Or I told you you could spend that $700 on something like this and then another like two or $300 and then you can shoot every single day in your house. Is that something you might be interested in? I bet the answer is yes. So, I'm not trying to sell this product on people, but for anyone who tells me that the cost is not worth it, I I think you're saying the training is not worth it to you because that that is what I see. If you're serious about training, if you're a serious professional, or even just a serious enthusiast, this is something you definitely want to look into because it overcomes the challenges of most people becoming, you know, that that average to great shooter.
And another important feature about all this is just how rugged and durable they are. They take a beating. You can drop them all over the place. If I have to drop my magazine and do a rack and change, take some shots, it's it's not a big deal because I can pick up this magazine and it's it's fully encased, it's protected. I'm not going to break it where I I have probably an entire graveyard of airsoft magazines from students who drop the magazines and they break. They shatter, the O-ring seals break. Um this is a much easier, contained, and more thought-through design on how to you know, put it through a beating and it'll still it'll stay true and true over and over. So, really impressed with what they've put out so far and you know, if you're thinking about buying one of these just remember the rifle that we reviewed last time that that's a training tool for professionals I think a lot of you can get a lot of dry fire reps out of it but that design was for like military law enforcement and and enthusiasts at home but it's but it's a pretty expensive tool to get whereas something like this this is designed more for you the viewer at home who is or is not a professional but is looking for home defense options to train reduce that cost of training increase the reps that you're getting and the frequency that you're training and it's something that's going to just make you a more proficient shooting from a marksmanship standpoint they're accurate out to you know 15-20 yards and then also and more importantly from a manipulation standpoint you can practice this in the dark at your house not have to worry about any of the issues that you would shooting live fire or even with simunition or shooting UTM something like that and all the while not having a firearm so if you accidentally walk outside with it or it's in your car and you forgot about it it's not a big deal.
