I Get It Intellectually…But Nothing Changes

SnakeSpeak10:12

You have likely spent years immersed in the literature of the absolute, attending gatherings and listening to the clearest pointers available. You have reached a point where you can articulate the truth of non-separation with startling precision. And yet, there is a nagging, persistent pain point that remains. You understand it intellectually, but you still feel like me. You wake up in the morning and the old world of problems, personal history, and the sense of a limited center [music] of experience is reconstructed almost immediately.

This gap between the conceptual grasp of reality >> [music] >> and the felt sense of your daily existence is perhaps the most common impasse in the investigation [music] of your true nature. It feels as though you are standing at the edge of a cliff, waiting [music] for a penny to drop, or a final recognition that will once and for all dissolve the protagonist of your story.

The primary reason you feel stuck in this intellectual understanding is that the mind is fundamentally incapable of grasping your true nature. The intellect functions as a fragment of existence, not the whole field. It operates strictly through symbols, labels, and the division of reality into subjects and objects. Trying to understand your fundamental awareness with the mind is like a dog trying to understand calculus. The mind and all thinking appears within the space of awareness. Therefore, awareness contains the mind, but the mind can never contain or know awareness as an object of its own.

This creates a sticky phase where the intellect takes spiritual pointers and turns them into a new ideology or candy to satisfy its own appetite for knowledge. The part of you that feels it is learning non-duality is often the intellect itself, subtly maintaining the me as the one who now knows these [music] truths. When you say, "I understand it only intellectually." The I making that statement is the very conceptual ghost that is supposedly not understood. This thought is just another appearance in the very awareness you are looking for. Yet you are treating it as a real problem that needs a mental solution.

The me you feel is still there is not a substantial physical entity, but a condensed accumulation of the past, memories, and habitual thought patterns. The ego is simply the thought I, the first word spoken to which all other thoughts are subsequently attached. It is a virus in the computer program of the mind that pretends to be yourself. This person you [music] take yourself to be is an imaginary concept, a phantom or a mask with no independent existence of its own. It appears real only because it is currently being used as a reference point for every experience.

When you say, "I am sad." or "I am confused." you are attaching a variable state to a fictional center. This selfing process is a habit of language and conditioning that has been reinforced over and over from the time you were 2 years old. It has never been truly questioned. It has only been assumed.

From a biological perspective, this feeling of being a me is a normal functioning of the human brain, often associated with the default mode network, DMN. The brain has evolved a languaging center that functions like a bio-computer >> [music] >> responsible for creating a personalized map of reality. This part of the brain interprets immediate sensory input through the lens of memory to maintain a coherent story of a separate individual moving through time. This me is a total fiction generated by the momentum of neurological patterns. It takes raw, non-conceptual data >> [music] >> and automatically assigns a central character, the I, to the experience. This is a mechanical reflex of the human nervous system designed to maintain the dream of separation for the purpose of biological survival.

A crucial realization in closing the gap between intellectual and direct knowing is noticing that the mind's label of existence comes after the fact. In your immediate experience, seeing, hearing, and sensing happen prior to any conceptualizing. The eye sees and then, split seconds later, a thought arises that says, "I see." The thought I see cannot actually see. [music] It is just a label tagged onto a singular process of seeing that happens spontaneously. The seeming I is a plagiarist claiming doership for events it did not initiate. Your heart [music] beats, your lungs breathe, and your cells replace themselves without an I directing them. Thoughts likewise arise spontaneously without a thinker choosing them. The body-mind functions on its own, and the I is merely an afterthought added to create the illusion of an independent controller.

Your fundamental being does not disappear when the word I falls away. This can be easily verified by pausing thought for a second. When the thought I is absent, you haven't fallen apart. Your senses are still working. Your eyes are still registering light, and your ears are still hearing. This naked presence is already there right now. It does not need to be achieved, maintained, or realized by a mind.

There is a split second [music] when you first wake up in the morning before the mind takes over and says, "I am awake." where you are in your true, natural state. [music] In that gap, there is no notion of being this or that. Yet, I am remains. Existence is primary. You must be there first in order to even recognize a thought or a lack of thoughts. This simple, ordinary sense of presence is the natural state. It is not a mystical achievement, but the background that allows the intellect to even have a problem with not understanding. [music]

To move past the intellectual level, the focus must shift from thinking about truth to the direct investigation of facts in your immediate experience. Look for the me directly. Instead of thinking about why the me is still there, look for its evidence in your immediate experience. The thought says there is a me. Now, look for it. Can you find a definite, substantial entity that you can identify and say, >> [music] >> "There is exactly what I am." When you search for the owner of your experiences independent of the experiences themselves, you will find it is missing.

Acknowledge the undeniable fact of being. The intellect may be confused, but your sheer existence is beyond doubt. You cannot deny that you are present and aware. If you ask yourself, are you aware? You answer yes instantly [music] without needing a chain of reasoning or the mind. This self-shining presence is the one thing you can never lose.

Recognize thoughts as impersonal functioning. The me survives on the belief that I am generating thoughts and making decisions. Observe your mind and ask if you know what the next thought will be before it appears. You will see that thinking happens spontaneously and effortlessly. The I is just a label tagged on afterward to take credit. Realize that the same spontaneous intelligence that grows your hair is what is currently understanding or not understanding [music] these words. The search ends not when the mind finds a perfect answer, but when the questioner, the me, is found to be a fiction. You are what you seek.

The me that is trying to reach clarity is the only thing creating the illusion of separation. Eventually, you see that the word I is just a symbol used for communication, like your name, but it has no more reality than a shadow. When you pause the conceptualizing and the need to attain or deepen the understanding, you are left with the undeniable self-shining presence of your own nature. This is not an intellectual conclusion, but a direct, non-conceptual recognition of what has been there all along. The I is a subsequent conceptual construction, >> [music] >> and your undeniable presence is the constant, invariable ground that remains untouched whether the word I is present or absent.
