[music and singing]

All right, yes, it's viewer chat time. So, let's bring up our first person. We have uh Amen. Hello, welcome.

>> Hey Ryan, what's going on? Can you hear me?

>> Yeah, I can. Good to have you here. What would you like to ask about today?

>> That's awesome, man. So, uh I'm Orthodox. I said something earlier in the chat, I think you might have read it, uh but I ended up having to leave. But actually, I was able to come back and uh have this conversation.

>> Oh, good.

>> I'm in the US, so I I think you're in uh you're in Australia, Australia. I'm in Australia, yeah.

>> I couldn't tell by your accent, by the way, so

>> Is it Oh, okay. [laughter] That's funny.

>> Okay,

>> I guess I am. I guess I am too strong, then.

>> Yeah, so I guess it's not just stuff like that. Um so, the other day, man, I actually saw one of your videos on I think it was like six misused verses of baptismal regeneration.

>> Um and I don't know, man, I I I wanted to to have a conversation with you about that. Is that something we can do for a little bit?

>> Yeah, let's talk about yeah, how we're saved, and um yeah, your position from an Orthodox perspective would be water baptism

>> Mhm.

>> is how someone gets gets saved or gets regenerated.

>> To be

>> Um is that right?

>> To to be very specific, the normative means. So, and I'm I'm I'm pretty sure you're you're familiar with our with the terminology, cuz I I think you've debated a bunch of Catholics and Orthodox before in the past, right?

>> Yeah. Yeah, so they'll say that all original and all personal sins are forgiven in baptism.

>> Well, no, I mean like specifically, when I say normative, so for instance, um like I think a lot of people

>> They might say there's exceptions, you're saying, like there might be exceptions to that people are saying.

>> Yeah, so like, you know, we we hear a lot, okay, suppose you live in like uh Saudi or something like that, and then you come to faith in Christ and then the very next day a T group finds out about it and they unalive you, right? Um then the question is well do you go to heaven or do you go to hell or what's going on? And we would say well Christ has made a normative means in which salvation is offered um the water and um the spirit moving through the water so it's not just throwing water on yourself. Um but the except so that particular case, you know, we could say well in that particular case there might be an exception that's made uh for an individual. Um but we don't claim to say who does and who is not saved because even within the Orthodox Church just because a person is baptized, well I mean I don't know that person's um relationship with God. I don't know their heart. I mean just because they're baptized doesn't mean they're automatically guaranteed to go in uh to heaven. But we just say that the normative means by which a person um uh comes to saving faith or is brought in or sacraments is by the church via baptism. So exceptions don't define the rule. This is what I'm saying.

>> Yeah, okay. All right. Um I would just say though in scripture that seems to be that the normative way or the way that someone gets saved is by faith. So I would go to something like Romans 5:1 very clearly saying, I'll bring it up for us here. Therefore, since we've been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. And then verse two even, through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. So I think this is very clear teaching from the Apostle Paul about by what means a person gets justified, being put in right standing before Almighty God. It's always by faith. Never never says justified by getting water baptized.

>> So and and I'm I'm paying attention to you. I'm just writing this down cuz I don't want to misrepresent what you're saying. Um so in Romans, um you're familiar with Romans 10:9, right?

>> Yep.

>> Yeah. Can you pull it up on the screen actually so that everybody can see it cuz I don't want to I don't want people to think that we're just making stuff up.

>> Yeah. I actually think it lines up cuz even verse 10 it says, "For with the heart one believes and is justified." Always links up believing or faith with justification. Never once water baptized.

>> So So So you're saying that because the way that this verse is is quoted that it's about the belief um that is not necessarily tied to some sacramental work of I'm just making sure that I'm writing it down. I don't want to misinterpret you. Is that Is that what you're saying based on Romans 10:9?

>> So what I'm saying is that we God gives us a promise and therefore we believe that promise. And we then get counted as righteous. That's what the verses before Romans 5 talk about.

>> Okay.

>> Um so it's talked about Abraham and Abraham's faith in verse 21 how he was fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

>> Right.

>> And that is why his faith was counted him as righteousness. So notice it wasn't based on him being good enough, keeping enough laws, or getting baptized. It's just he believed God's promise and it was counted counted him as righteousness.

>> Okay.

>> And then Paul links that with us. He says, "But the words it was counted to him were not written for his sake alone. So not just for Abraham's sake, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. So we have to believe in Christ and what he's already done to rescue us

>> Sounds good.

>> from our punishment and that promise of eternal life is given to us.

>> Sounds good. Okay. Um so now that I fully understand your position, um Um, can we read Romans 10:9 because there's something in that verse that I want to show you that I don't think a lot of people really understand. Um, not to say that you don't understand

>> curious though about how how how you deal with like these sort of verses like when it does say just by faith.

>> Yeah, yeah, I'm So I'm dealing with it with the totality of scripture. So Romans 10:9 is still in the same book of Romans because you know in the original autograph there were no chapter markings. It was just a letter. Paul even says many times look how long the letter I've written with my own hand. Um, so I'm not going to take one verse that Paul says

>> see with what large letters I'm writing to you with my own hand.

>> Right.

>> Um, not that's he's not talking about the length of it there. He's talking about

>> Mhm.

>> either he's talking about like he's actually physically like using large um, letters as he's writing like cuz he's writing to confront them over there.

>> in in in capital letters. I I mean I'm aware but but I'm saying that Sorry?

>> Yeah, I was Well, that's what we have today. Like whether that was what they originally penned it with like that they you know we we don't have the original ones that they actually penned down but we have copies of it what we have comes down today in capitals, yeah.

>> Yeah, yeah, so I'm I'm familiar with the passage but I'm saying So so are you contesting that the original or at least from what we have that there were some chapter markings when Paul was writing the letters or or are you just undecided on

>> No, no, no, no, no, no, no, I it's one continuous flow. It's one continuous flow. I'm just saying you just you just misquoted that passage. He didn't say how long I'm writing. He didn't say that. He just says see with with large letters I'm writing.

>> Right.

>> Um, so it's either the severity of what he's talking about or literally physically he's like using very large font and as he's writing to confront them over the error but

>> No problem. Um, okay.

>> He sometimes would like have someone else scribe it and then he would like maybe do an ending like this is my greeting I write with my own hand. He's like this is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine is the way I write.

>> I got you. No problem. So So So basically the point that I'm trying to make is in Romans 4 or Romans 5, uh it's going to be linked to the rest of the things that Paul says in that same continuous letter. So, can we read Romans chapter 10 verse 9 because I want to actually juxtapose this with something that Paul says. Is that something we can do for for the audience here?

>> Yeah, so it says because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you'll be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. And then even verse 11, for the scripture says everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.

>> Amen.

>> So, it's continually it's linking up just believing is what is how we are justified before God.

>> Great. So, do you think that Paul will contradict himself at all or do you think that

>> No, this is this is perfectly consistent with Romans 5:1. It's actually lined up. Believing is the only way that we're justified. Notice never once mentioning baptism as the way to be justified.

>> Right. Okay, so can you do me a favor now because I'm going to show you something else that Paul says and I want you to explicate this. Can you go to Acts chapter 22 and read verse 16 for me, please? Close the door for me, baby girl.

>> This is not Acts 22:16 is not Paul speaking here. Do you know who's speaking here?

>> Who's speaking here?

>> Do you know? Do you know who's speaking?

>> Go ahead and tell me.

>> Cuz you thought this was Paul, right?

>> Go ahead and tell me who it is that's speaking.

>> This is Ananias. This is not Paul.

>> So, is Ananias recounting something that Paul said?

>> No.

>> He's not?

>> No, as in this is as in this is Paul on trial when he and he's actually just giving an account of

>> Uh-huh.

>> like his testimony to the crowd actually, yeah. Right. But in terms of who he's quoting, who's speaking here, this is not actually this is not um Paul who said these original words, it's Ananias. Ananias is talking to Paul here, right after he got blinded on the road to Damascus. Ananias was told to go to Paul. And this is uh just Paul recounting what Ananias said to him.

>> Right.

>> When he was blinded.

>> So, when he's recounting something that actually happened to Paul as a testimony, what is he saying?

>> He's saying this is what happened. He's describing what this person said to me.

>> read it for us, please?

>> Yeah.

>> [laughter]

>> But notice, this is You You still haven't dealt with Romans 5.

>> I'm I'm

>> You haven't dealt with all those passages in Romans.

>> I'm I'm I'm I'm

>> You want to jump around to different books, I understand. But you've got to interpret in in the context of the book itself.

>> I got you. Ryan, what I'm doing is because Paul wrote So, this is what I'm saying. Paul is not going to contradict himself. So, what I'm doing is I'm going to what Paul wrote, his own experience, and I'm linking it to the So, he's quoting something that happened earlier.

>> I'll read it out. But this This verse, again, this is Ananias, not Paul, giving this instruction. It's Ananias.

>> Ananias is giving an account of something but hold on a second. So, so let's just make sure that everybody understands what's happening. Ananias is giving an account of something but and by your own testimony, you said that this is a a testimony that Paul himself gives or a testimony that Paul himself explains. Is Is that Is that a fair accurate

>> Right, but he's recording what a man said.

>> Exactly.

>> Right, that's Well, he's recording what a person said to him.

>> Perfect. Perfect. So,

>> That's all he's doing. He's not So, it's actually he's it's not then his words. If I'm quoting you, it's not my words all of a sudden, it's still your words. If I If I say, "This is what um I'm I'm in told me." Well, that's I'm just quoting what you said. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily even approving of what you said. I'm just saying this is what you said.

>> So So Ryan, So let me

>> So I'm not saying that Paul is disagreeing here. I'm not even saying Paul is disagreeing. I'm just saying this is Paul which is recounting.

>> So Ryan, let me get this straight. If If somebody is listening to the conversation you and I have right now and then they hear me say um I was speaking to Ryan and he said that or he's saying he's explicating he's uh explaining that this is not necessarily what Paul is saying da da da da da I'm quoting you verbatim and they quote me quoting you. Is that something that you said? Is that something you did? Is that something that you explicated?

>> And so therefore that would be if I'm quoting like uh Ananias said that you got to be baptized to be saved. Well, that doesn't mean I agree with that. I'm just quoting that's what you said. But let's read out the verse cuz I don't I think you think this is a verse that supports your case when actually it really doesn't support your case in the slightest. So let's let's go read it if you want.

>> Do you want to read it or not?

>> Let's stick here for a minute because what I don't like to do I don't like to misquote or and I'm not saying that you're doing that but for the sake of the audience because respectfully I'm not going to change your mind on this. I don't think that that's

>> Brother Soul, Brother Soul received your side. All right? And then he said the God of our fathers appointed you appointed you to know his will. So this is still quoting what Ananias is saying here, right?

>> You've already explained that.

>> So Ananias, I'm just saying this is okay clear this is Ananias' words to see the righteous one and to hear a voice from his mouth. For you will be a witness for him to every of what you have seen and heard. And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on his name. And quote.

>> Okay, no problem.

>> And quote.

>> Okay, good.

>> So notice there's nothing here that says baptism washes away your sins.

>> Okay.

>> It doesn't say be baptized to wash away your sins in order to get your sins washed away. Rise.

>> Right.

>> And be baptized. And wash away your sins. They're three separate actions here. He's not linking them as in this is how you get your sins forgiven.

>> Do you know what the word Yes, I understand. Do you understand what the word and is? Like like in a in a literary fashion. Is it So and is a conjunction, correct? A conjunction. Right. So So So what does and do?

>> Well, it just it it in in a sentence it can be I went I I ate breakfast. And I went to work. Now that doesn't mean I ate I I ate breakfast to go to work. I I'm just describing I ate breakfast and I went to work. I could have gone to work without eating breakfast.

>> But you didn't.

>> But I'm just describing two different things in that one sentence that I did.

>> But

>> linking them as if they are one's the cause of the other. Do you understand that?

>> But you didn't, though. In that in that example you gave, you said I ate and I went to work. So it's not either or, it's both and. That's what a conjunction does. It ties two clauses together and makes it one.

>> Do you see

>> Let's see in this instruction, he's saying rise. That's one action he has he should do. Be baptized is a second action he should do. And third thing should he should get is his sins washed washed away. And he links it up with calling on his name.

>> Right. So

>> Which is a synonym of faith. Which is synonym of faith. Trusting in Jesus. So not getting bap not getting water baptized, my friend. It's not about that.

>> Sure.

>> Instead, it's relying on Christ and Christ alone. I would actually say

>> Hold on a second.

>> Ananias, remember Ananias is not aware of whether Paul even has his sins forgiven at this point in time. Do you realize that Ananias is not all knowing? Do you agree with me?

>> That's That's fine. We we can get to that in a minute. I have no problem addressing that. But let's just stick here for a minute. So, notice what it says, "Arise and be baptized and wash away their sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Now, we went to Romans 10:9. What did Paul say that you must do in order to be saved?

>> Well, calling on his name, which is synonymous

>> With faith.

>> Right. Trusting in him.

>> Right, because that's your position. In Jesus that he died for us and

>> And I wrote it down here cuz you linked it to Romans 4:5 and you linked it and then we went to Romans 10:9. And what I'm saying is when when Ananias is explicating what happened to Paul, when Ananias is explaining the things that Paul said, what he did, that's going to be in conjunction with his affirmation of how you'll be saved in Romans 10:9. Because here it says, "Arise and be baptized

>> You're not You're not making much sense here, bro. You're not making much sense.

>> Okay, so so according to this according to to Acts

>> Where did Where did Paul get his gospel from? Can I ask you, where did Paul get his gospel from?

>> We'll we'll we'll get that We'll get to that in a second. According to Acts

>> he get his gospel from? Simple question.

>> Ryan.

>> Where did he get his gospel from?

>> Please, let's stick here for a minute. According to Acts chapter 22:16, when it says, "Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins," can he do that without calling on the name of the Lord?

>> Well, Paul didn't get his gospel from Ananias.

>> What does that have to do with my question?

>> And in fact, Ananias may not He's not even aware that Paul already has his sins all washed away by by this time point in time.

>> What is

>> Right, he's already had If you go read the account in Acts 26 when Paul's recounting the same experience, he speaks about how people their hearts cleansed by faith. He even describes in Galatians chapter uh chapter 1:11 and 12 that Paul did not receive his gospel from any man, nor was he taught it. But he received it as a direct revelation from Jesus Christ. So, Paul is not getting a gospel message from Ananias here. He's already got it directly from Jesus on the road to Damascus. He's already told been told by Jesus in Acts 26 that you have your heart cleansed, which is forgiveness of sins, by fact you

>> But according to

>> has already believed. He even affirms Christ as his Lord.

>> According to Paul's affirmation of faith, which you have explained to us, I listened to you. According to Paul's affirmation of faith, what is that including according to the statements of Ananias which he records is an explication of what happened with Paul?

>> He records what Ananias said to him.

>> Oh, so Ananias was wrong.

>> that that Paul Ananias is not all-knowing. If you think Ananias

>> Oh, Ananias was wrong.

>> that.

>> was wrong.

>> I'm not even No, Ananias is not all-knowing. Ananias doesn't even necessarily know the state of Paul's heart at that point in time.

>> so Ananias

>> Just like Just like you don't. You even admit that. You even admit that. You don't know the state of people's

>> on a second.

>> People's hearts, right?

>> Let Let me just get this straight. Who appeared to Ananias and told him what to do?

>> Well, he was told to go to Paul and to re- allow him his sight, to pray for him, and that his sight would be regained. That's what he was told. By Jesus to regain his sight. Does that make Does that make him all-knowing? Does that mean therefore you need to say all these things?

>> to believe So, you want me to believe

>> Is that right?

>> want me to believe that Jesus, the risen Christ, who is all-knowing, who was God in the flesh, sent Ananias and and Ananias failed immediately?

>> What do you mean failed immediately?

>> Because you told me

>> saying failed. His job was Okay, listen. His job was to open the eyes of Paul. And his eyes got restored. His job's done. So, whatever else might say there, he might say, "Oh, look, the weather's sunny today." when it's actually cloudy. Like he could say something like that because he's not told to go and tell Paul what the weather's like that

>> So, Ananias was wrong.

>> Do you understand? No, I'm not even saying Ananias is wrong. I'm saying Paul Ananias doesn't know the state of Paul's heart at that point in time.

>> What does that have to

>> You're presuming he You're inserting something into the text that's not there to say that Ananias knew that Paul's not saved

>> it into the text. Okay, let's read it. Ananias He He doesn't know the Paul's heart or something like that. Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Calling on the name of the Lord is tied with washing away thy sins, correct?

>> Which calling on the name of the Lord is a way of trusting in Jesus to save you.

>> What about getting up

>> What about getting

>> So, so according to this verse, how do you wash away your sins? What is the conjunction here?

>> Calling on his name according to Ananias is saying that which is to put your trust in Jesus. It's not water baptism.

>> Brian, right Okay, okay, so so that's not water baptism there?

>> Nope. Not not water Well, in fact, you'd have to prove that it is water baptism. You'd have to prove that it

>> to prove So, I So, so I have to prove

>> That's one thing, but even if it's to grant it for the sake of argument that's water baptism, he's still not connecting

>> Wait, hold on a second.

>> be baptized with washing away his sins.

>> So, so So, this verse I'm surprised you're sticking on a verse that doesn't support your case very much. It doesn't It doesn't support your case.

>> So, can you actually finally deal with the very first thing that I brought up?

>> I I hold on a second. Are you So, are you saying that according to this verse that this is not water baptism? What is your position?

>> What I'm saying is that you would have to If If you're going to use this to prove water baptism, you'd have to have it First of all, you have to prove that it is water baptism first. It's not me to try and show that it's not. You'd have to show that it is based on the context, but secondly, you'd have to then show that it's connecting that water baptism with washing away sins, which the text doesn't connect it.

>> So, Paul wasn't water baptized?

>> I'm not saying it's not me you You You are making so much unjustified leaps.

>> I

>> I just showed that you have the burden of proof to say this. And so, therefore, you say, "Oh, so therefore, that means Paul never got water baptized in his entire life."

>> So, when Jesus

>> Think logically.

>> Hold on a second. I'm going to let

>> for a minute.

>> Hold on a second. I'm going to let

>> leaps like that.

>> So, when Jesus So, when Jesus said the same thing in Mark 16:16, that's not water baptism?

>> Well, again, people Some people interpret that as a spiritual baptism rather than water baptism. And so, again, you Someone If someone wants to insist that they have to get water baptized, then they'd have to, one, prove that's that is referring to water baptism based on the context. They'd have to prove that. But secondly, Mark 16:16 does not even necessitate Even if it Even if I'm to grant that's water baptism, it doesn't necessitate you have to be water baptized to be saved.

>> Okay, so when it said Matter of fact, let's just go to the verse. Let's go to the verse.

>> I understand you don't want to deal with the text that I've brought up. You don't want to deal with Romans. Then, can you deal with it? Based on I understand I understand you want to You just want to isolate verses and not actually read what the what Paul's argument here is in Romans. According to Paul here in Romans, by what means is a person According I understand Look at this. Look at what you're doing there. The verse is on the screen. Can you deal with the fact that Paul says that we are justified by faith? Can you deal with that?

>> I'm not going to take Paul out of context and just look at and build a theology.

>> I've read the entirety of Romans.

>> I know So have I. I know that Protestants typically take verses out of context and build theologies off them. What I want to do

>> So, then, I'm saying explain Romans Explain Romans 3, 4, and 5. So, in the context, Romans 3, 4, and 5 and how someone is justified.

>> What would you do, Ryan, if a Muslim was to come to you and say, "Oh, look at this verse." And then they go to John chapter 20 and they say, "Jesus says, I've ascended to my Lord and your Lord, my God and my God." Are you going to allow them to build Hold on. So, are you going to allow them to build a theology? So, okay. So, so watch this. Watch this, Chad.

>> beautiful.

>> Oh, so God has a god.

>> Beautiful verse. So, can Yeah, beautiful. I agree. Now, how do you deal with this? How do you deal with Romans What is

>> So, according to

>> with John

>> Amen. Amen. I want to give you one last chance cuz you're being You're not actually interacting well in this conversation.

>> So, my last chance for you is how do you In context, in context of Romans 3, 4 Amen. Amen. I want to give you one last chance. According to Romans 3, 4, and 5 you read reading in context, how does Paul say that we're justified in those three chapters?

>> He says that we're justified according to his statements in Romans chapter 10 verse 9, which links to Acts chapter 22 verse 16, which links to Acts chapter 2 verse 38, which links to Titus chapter 3 verses 4 and 5.

>> you actually deal with any of the verses in Romans 3, 4, and 5?

>> what you want me to do. You want me to

>> Deal with the text of Romans 3, 4, and 5, yeah.

>> You want me to stay in one

>> Not one verse. Romans 3, 4, and 5 is not one verse. Romans 3, 4, and verse 5 is actually three chapters. If you're not aware.

>> three chapters. It's three chapters. How many chapters are in the Bible, Ryan?

>> So, in the context of Romans 3, 4, and 5, which is where Paul lays out lays out very clearly

>> How many chapters did Paul write?

>> Let's not Let's not be disrespectful. Amen.

>> I'm not being disrespectful.

>> I want you to come to the knowledge of the truth. I don't I don't want you to be sent to hell. I really want you to go to heaven. I care about your salvation.

>> Trust me. Trust me. Trust me. I put my faith

>> Have you read Have you read Romans 3, 4, and 5?

>> So, from from I mean, from what we're saying

>> Have you read Romans 3, 4, and 5?

>> So, let's stick on the actual topic, Ryan.

>> Have you

>> Have you read Acts chapter 22

>> Have you read Romans 3, 4, and 5?

>> Ryan I was Okay, so now he's muted me. Okay, so now he's muted me.

>> Last chance. Last chance. Can you be respectful cuz honestly you're showing so much disrespect in this conversation.

>> what, Ryan, let's do this. Let's have a formal debate.

>> you've just shown yourself Last chance. Last chance.

>> Let's have a formal debate where we have time to have the fourth and the fifth and the sixth

>> very unreasonable person right now. Right. I'm asking you You've consented to the viewer rules to coming up here. And so, my last question My last chance for you. Have you read Romans 3, 4, and 5? Have you read those three chapters?

>> Ryan, this is insane. Ryan, you realize that you Yes, I've read it.

>> or no?

>> Ryan

>> There we go. Okay. So, you've read it. Now, according to Romans 3, 4, and 5, how does Paul say that a person is justified?

>> By faith.

>> Okay.

>> Okay, now Okay, now Okay, now So

>> So, then you agree with my position? You agree with my position now?

>> No, watch this. Watch this, Ryan. According to the records that we have on Paul in his confession of faith, what is it linked to?

>> Exactly. James is right.

>> What is it linked to? What is it linked to?

>> you're not a serious interlocutor.

>> Notice how I answered your question. Hold on a second. Like And And this is what I want everybody to know. Notice how I answered your question. I answered all your questions.

>> does How does he judge How does he say that we're justified? You said by faith. Okay, so then you're agreeing with my position.

>> his faith is linked to

>> mentions Well, what is faith according to Paul in those three chapters? What is

>> we got Socrates over here. What is it? Ryan

>> What is What is faith?

>> What is Paul's faith linked to?

>> According to Romans 3, 4, and 5

>> testament According to the testimony of what happened to him in Acts, what is his faith linked to?

>> What is his faith according to Romans 3, 4, and 5?

>> Ryan

>> Do you understand what his faith is what faith is defined as by Paul himself?

>> Trust me, I understand.

>> How does he define it?

>> Trust me, I used to be here.

>> Then tell me. Then tell me if you understand. Tell me what Paul defines faith to be in Romans 3, 4, and 5.

>> answer it.

>> I don't think you know those three chapters very well.

>> Because notice you're not answering any of the questions I'm asking you. You can't deal with the text. You cannot

>> 4 about?

>> You are unable to deal with the text holistically.

>> What's Romans 4 about? What's Romans What's Romans 4 about?
