Chevrolet Silverado Years to AVOID — and the Years That Last Forever

The Silverado is the most confusing truck you can buy used. Pick the right year and you get a truck that will outlast your mortgage. Pick the wrong one and you are staring at an engine repair that costs more than a decent sedan. The difference between a 300,000mi Silverado and a financial disaster comes down to a single decision, the model year you drove off the lot with. These are the Silverado years to stay away from and the few that are actually worth the money. Let's start with the trucks that send owners straight to the repair shop.

Number one, the 2007 Silverado. This is the truck that started it all. In 2007, Chevrolet rolled out a brand new platform and introduced a system called active fuel management, AFM, to the 5.3 L and 6 L V8 engines. The idea sounds reasonable on paper. Shut down four of the eight cylinders when the truck is cruising to save fuel. The execution inside the Silverado engine block was a disaster. The special collapsible lifters that make this system work tend to fail over time. And when one collapses inside the engine, you get a loud ticking noise from under the hood, misfire codes lighting up the dashboard, and a repair bill between $3,000 and $7,000 depending on how much damage the failed lifter did to the cam shaft. Even worse, those deactivated cylinders do not seat the piston rings properly, which means the engine starts burning through oil. Owners reported losing a quart every 500 to 2,000 mi. Chevrolet eventually confirmed the root cause in a technical service bulletin pointing to the AFM pressure relief valve spraying oil directly onto the piston skirts. If the damage spreads far enough, a full engine replacement can cost $9,000 to $11,000.

And here is a rule every Silverado buyer needs to know. Never buy the first model year of a Chevrolet truck redesign. The 2007 proved that. And as you will see, Chevrolet repeated the same mistake twice more.

Number two, 2008 through 2010. These Silverados inherited every AFM, active fuel management problem from 2007, and they kept right on going. The Federal Safety Database shows 78 documented oil consumption complaints with engines failing at an average of around 66,000 mi. Some owners reported the oil burning starting as early as 25,000 mi, meaning the engine was wearing itself out before the truck was even broken in. On top of that, 2008 earned a poor rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on the side impact crash test. These models were also swept up in the massive Takata airbag recall that affected millions of vehicles across dozens of brands. One Silverado owner death was linked to a Takata airbag rupture. If you find one of these trucks for sale and that airbag recall was never completed, walk away. But oil consumption was just the beginning. The transmission on these trucks had its own set of problems.

Number three, the 2015 Silverado. After the disaster of the 2014 launch, you would think the 2015 would come out cleaned up. It didn't. This truck received 23 federal safety recalls, which is actually more recalls than even the 2014 got. The transfer case on four-wheel drive models had a software bug that could shift the truck into neutral without any input from the driver. Picture yourself on the highway at 65 mph and the truck just drops out of gear with no warning. The fuel gauge sensor gave completely random readings showing empty when the tank was full or half full when you were running on fumes. The eight-speed automatic that was spreading across the Silverado lineup brought along a torque converter shutter between 25 and 50 mph and that became one of the signature headaches of this entire generation. Consumer Reports gave it a reliability score of 1 out of five. If someone tells you the 2015 fixed the 2014's problems, they are wrong.

And speaking of that, 2014, we have not even gotten to it yet. But first, there is a model year that earned a title no truck wants.

Number four, the 2017 Silverado. This one earned the official Beware of the Clunker badge from car complaints.com. And what makes the 2017 especially painful is how early the problems show up. The average mileage at the time of complaint was just 3,000 mi. That is essentially a brand new truck breaking down before the first oil change. The 8-speed automatic transmission was the main offender. Shops that specialize in transmission work reported they were replacing two to three Silverado transmissions every single week, mostly 2016 and 2017 units. A replacement transmission runs $4,500 to $5,000 or more. Engine lifter collapse on these trucks can climb to $10,000 if the cam shaft gets damaged. There were also reports of the lower control arms on the front suspension cracking, the part that connects the wheel hub assembly to the frame. If that piece fractures while you are driving, the front wheel can separate from the truck entirely.

Now, here is the Silverado that generated more owner complaints than any other truck on the federal safety database.

Number five, the 2014 Silverado. This is the worst Silverado Chevrolet has ever built, and the data backs that up completely. 2,627 owner complaints documented on car complaints.com, over 20 federal recalls, over 4,200 technical service bulletins issued to dealerships. The air conditioning condenser was the single most reported failure. Engine vibration cracks the solder joints on the condenser lines, killing the entire cooling system. Owners spent $800 to $1,500 each time, and many needed the same repair two or three times. The vacuum brake assist pump degraded over time and reduced braking effectiveness, which eventually triggered a recall covering 3.46 46 million trucks. After 113 accidents and 13 injuries were reported to the federal government, a condition called the Chevy shake produced an annoying vibration at highway speeds that no amount of tire balancing or alignment work could fix. And the paint quality from a bad factory powder coat batch was so poor that some owners faced $4,000 to $10,000 to repaint their entire truck. The 2014 was a brand new platform, the first year of the redesign, and it shows in every one of those complaint numbers. This is the model year I tell everyone to avoid above all others.

But believe it or not, Chevy managed to repeat this exact same pattern on the Silverado assembly line 5 years later.

Number six, the 2019 Silverado. Another complete groundup redesign of the Silverado platform and the same result for the third time in a row. Consumer Reports rated it one out of five for reliability. The new version of the cylinder deactivation system, now called dynamic fuel management, DFM, started producing lifter failures on trucks with fewer than 10,000 m on the odometer. One owner on a Silverado forum was quoted $8,200 just for a stuck lifter valve repair. Engine rebuilds at 80,000 to 93,000 miles became common discussion topics online. The transmission shutter continued across both the 8-speed and the newer 10-speed automatic with some owners spending over $10,000 chasing a permanent fix. The Federal Safety Agency recorded 170 brake complaints at an average mileage of just 8,300 mi. Drive shafts were literally separating from the truck due to improper welding at the factory, leading to a recall covering over 300,000 vehicles. If you are looking at anything newer with the 6.2 L engine, Chevy recalled close to 600,000 models from 2021 through 2024 for connecting rodbearing failures that can destroy the engine at highway speed without warning. If you are shopping used, the 2014 and the 2019 should be your absolute deal breakers.

Now, this last avoid year is for the diesel crowd. And this one might be the most expensive failure on the entire list.

Number seven, the 2011 through 2016 Duramax diesel. If you are looking at a 2500 or 3500 heavyduty with the Duramax from this era, there is one single component that can cost you more than any other failure on any Silverado ever made. The Bosch high-pressure fuel pump in these trucks called the CP4 is a well-known failure point in the diesel community. When this pump fails, and it happens suddenly with absolutely zero warning signs, it grinds itself apart internally and sends tiny metal shavings through the entire fuel delivery system. The fuel rails, all eight injectors, every fuel line, and the fuel tank itself all get contaminated with metal debris. Cleaning and replacing the complete fuel system costs $10 to $15,000. There are aftermarket lift pumps and CP3 conversion kits that can protect against this failure. But straight from the factory, every one of these trucks is sitting on a very expensive gamble. If the seller cannot prove the fuel pump has been addressed, factor that cost into your offer.

Now for the good news, let's talk about the Silverado years that are actually worth your money. Starting with a truck that almost everyone walks right past on the dealership lot.

Number eight, the 2018 Silverado. A lot of buyers skip right over the 2018 when they are shopping because it looks identical to the 2016 and the 2017 sitting next to it on the lot. That is actually the exact reason you want it. The 2018 was the final full production year of its platform, which means Chevrolet had four solid years of realworld data to revise the 8-speed transmission software, fine-tune the engine calibrations, and fix the manufacturing issues that showed up in earlier models. JD Power gave this truck a reliability score of 84 out of 100. If you want a modernl looking Silverado with the least amount of risk built into it, the 2018 is a seriously smart purchase.

But there is one Silverado that scored even higher.

Number nine, the 2012 Silverado. This truck holds the highest reliability rating of any Silverado Chevrolet has ever produced. JD Power scored it 86 out of 100. It received only four recalls and generated just 236 complaints on the federal safety database, which is remarkable for a full-size truck that sold hundreds of thousands of units that year. By 2012, the active fuel management system had been refined with improved valve cover and crankcase ventilation designs. The six-speed automatic transmission was thoroughly proven after 5 years of production. These trucks also sit in a sweet spot for used truck pricing because buyers tend to chase the newer body style, which means you can often find a clean 2012 for significantly less than a 2014, which can cost three times as much in repairs. This makes the 2012 an exceptional value. If you can find one with service records, that is the single safest used Silverado purchase across every generation.

Number 10. If you are in the market for a diesel, this next truck is the one every mechanic talks about. This is the 2006 and 2007 Duramax diesel, the LBZ generation in the diesel community. It was the last Duramax built without emissions after treatment equipment. That means it had no diesel particulate filter and no diesel exhaust fluid system. Instead, it was just a turbocharged diesel V8, making 360 horsepower and 650 lb feet of torque with a strengthened bottom end over the previous generation. Paired with the six-speed Allison automatic, this drivetrain is so reliable and so sought after that clean examples command a serious premium on the used market today. You will regularly see LBZ trucks with 200,000 miles listed for $30,000 to $40,000. They sell at those prices because buyers know exactly what they are getting. When mechanics talk about their dream diesel truck, this is usually the one they are describing.

And then there are the trucks that started the Silverado's reputation for lasting forever in the first place.

Number 11, 1999 through 2006. These are the Silverado trucks that flat out refused to quit. And the reason is beautifully simple. The 5.3 L V8 Vorttec engine in these models has absolutely no active fuel management system and no cylinder deactivation of any kind. The engine uses a conventional iron block with standard hydraulic lifters that do not collapse, do not shut down cylinders, and do not grind themselves apart. These engines routinely reach 300,000 mi with nothing more than regular oil changes and basic tune-ups. One owner documented a 2004 model with the 4.8 L V8 reaching 520,000 mi before the engine finally called it quits. Another owner on a truck forum reported a 2000 model with the 5.3 still hauling firewood at over 314,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. The 6 L Vortekch in the heavyduty trucks from this era is considered essentially indestructible by the mechanics who work on them every day. Paired with the Allison automatic or the heavyduty four-speed automatic, these trucks earned a reputation for running until the body panels rust off the frame. If you want the absolute safest Silverado you can buy with the longest possible life expectancy, look for a 2003 through 2006 with the 5.3 L or 6 L Vortc engine. The active fuel management system does not exist on these trucks, which means the number one Silverado killer is completely off the table. Just a solid, simple truck that does what a truck is supposed to do.
