Sam Shimone over the past few days has come out publicly admitting that he would love to believe the gospel that I preach, the message in the Bible that was saved by what Jesus did, not based on our works. Works are just the fruit. Let me show you some clips of what he's been saying.

Believe me, brother, all of us here, every one of us would love Ryan's false gospel. You know why? That means I can live like a pig. As long as I say, "I truly believe Jesus is Lord, son of God, and forgive me, I'm okay." Who doesn't want easy belieism? If we're all honest, we all struggle with sin. I'm daily struggling with lust, daily struggling with the flesh, daily struggling with laziness, daily struggling with slothfulness, daily struggling with body dysmorphia that hinders me from getting church. I'm under Destruction of God gives me what I deserve. You don't you think I want to believe in easy belieism?

>> Isn't it interesting? Even the person who he was interacting with saw that solid faith alone in Christ alone is a beautiful message. That's why we call it the gospel, good news, because it's not based on our performance. It's based on what Christ did for us. But then he thought it's too good to be true. It's not too good to be true. It's so good because it is true because it comes from an amazing God who's provided salvation to guilty sinners. Now, I don't call my view easy belieism. That's not a term that I use, nor what the Bible uses. He's trying to use that as a straw man in my position. But Jesus does say his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Why is it easy and light? Because he's done the work and he accepts us even though we are not still obedient as much as we should be. Sam's position is that how you end up in heaven is at least largely based on you keeping the commandments.
>> So what gets you into heaven? Obedience to Christ, obeying his commands. Jesus, how am I saved? You abide in me. Continue abiding me. How? Obey my commands. How you doing with that, Sam? Jesus says, "You must be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect." And he'll say, "Oh, look, God doesn't really require perfection." And notice this is what people do. They lower the holiness of God, to lower his standards in order to try and justify self. It's like the man, he says, "Who, who's my neighbor, Jesus? Who do I really have to love?" And Jesus said, "It's even your enemies." And so, Sam, you cannot get to heaven by you keeping the commandments. And his objection to believing in just Christ alone to get you to heaven without your works and obedience was that he claims that it leads you to live like a pig. It leads you to live any way you want. Now, let me tell you, Sam, I do get to live how I want as a saved believer. But how do I want to live? In holiness, in righteousness, avoiding sin. Because I've had a heart transformed by God's grace. And the spirit who's taken out my old heart and given me a new heart has given me new desires. That doesn't mean I want to live like a pig. It means I want to live more holy, more Christlike, just not as a condition to get myself to heaven. I don't try and obey in hopes that God's still going to keep loving me. I obey because I know he does love me. Now, I'm not perfect. I still sin. But Christ has paid for all my past, present, and future sins. And nothing will separate me from his love, as Romans 8 says. But isn't this interesting? It seems like Sam really just wants to sin. And the only reason why he's not is because otherwise he's afraid he might go to hell. That's not why I'm avoiding sin. I'm avoiding sin because God's opened my eyes to the truth. I know that sin is terrible. Sin is bad. It hurts yourself. It offends God. It breaks relationships. Once you have a regenerated heart, you'll see that God's way is better. Anyway, this objection that you'll live terrible lives if you believe the gospel of grace is an unfounded one because it actually has the opposite effect. A heart transformed by God's grace. Someone believing in faith alone leads a more holy and disciplined life than someone who's believing in their commandment keeping to keep themselves saved. But this objection was anticipated by the Apostle Paul anyway. In Romans 3:4 and 5, Paul laid out the gospel very clearly in those three chapters. And then he anticipates the objection in Romans 6:1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? He's just explained a gospel of grace. No works, no obedience is needed to go to heaven. And so it logically raises this question. So can we sin? Under Sam Shimone's gospel, it's you've got to be obedient in order for God to let you into heaven. You got to be faithful enough. No one's going to then ask the question, shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Because there's no grace on his view. It's performance-based. And so the very fact that Sam's objection to the gospel I preach is the same objection that the Apostle Paul anticipated in Romans 6:1 is proof that the gospel I'm preaching is the same one that Paul's preaching, but it's not the one that Sam Shimone is preaching. Sam Shimone has the perspective that people in the Old Testament were saved by obeying the Mosaic law. That's not what the Bible says. It's always been by faith. Abraham was justified by faith, and so was David apart from works. Romans 4:5 and 6. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness. Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works. So is it based on any works that you do, any deeds or actions or acts of obedience? Not at all. It's apart from works so that you can't boast. So all glory goes to God. And yet it's so interesting that Sam Shimone says that it's going to lead people to living a terrible life if they believe the gospel I preach of just trusting in Jesus and not works. And yet Sam, who's the one acting more Christlike? When Sam mentioned this comment, he spent a whole lot of time laying insults into me, not showing honor or perfect courtesy as God commands us to. Take a look.

>> Well, how much assurance do you have if it's on works, dumb jack?
>> Sam, how you're currently living your message that you're preaching is leading to your terrible behavior like this. But the message I'm preaching is not leading to me responding in the same way. But Sam, I care about you, man. I want God to save you. I want you to be brought out of the false gospel you have to the rest that's in Jesus. It's not rest. If God's only going to let you into heaven if you're faithful enough, if you're obedient enough, that's not resting in Jesus. That's relying on yourself. If someone says, "Look, you'll inherit a vast estate just as long as you do all the things I told you to do and don't break my rules." Well, then that estate, even though it's an amazing reward, is still not a gift. If you manage to keep all their rules, don't do anything bad against them, and you managed to inherit the estate, all glory goes to you because you fulfilled all the criteria needed. You were obedient enough. That's not a free gift. A free gift is where someone says, "I've got an estate. I want to give it to you as a gift. You don't have to do anything for me. Are you willing to accept it?" And in that case, who gets all the credit and the glory? Not the person receiving it because he hasn't had to obey a set of conditions and be good enough. It's the person who gave the gift. They get all the credit and the glory. And that's why God makes salvation like this, not based on our commandment keeping, our obedience. Otherwise, glory goes to us. Well done keeping the rules compared to the other person who didn't. Glory goes to you. But God makes it based on what Christ did. He kept all the rules on our behalf. And he took the punishment for our sins on that cross if you just accept it. How do you accept it? It's not even by praying a prayer or confessing something. It's just by trusting in your heart that Christ has already paid the penalty for you. You believe his promise. Just like Abraham believed God's promise and it was counted to him as righteousness. We believe God's promise of eternal life and we too get counted as righteousness. That's why we call it grace. What does grace mean? Unmerited favor. If you think you're going to inherit this amazing grace of heaven based on, well, I kept the commandments. I was faithful enough. I didn't die in mortal sin. I went to church every week. Well, then guess what? That's not grace. You've merited it. And that's exactly what the Catholic Catechism teaches anyway. That moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life. That is a contradiction in terms. If you have to merit for yourself, it is not grace because grace is unmerited favor. And even just seconds after Sam Shimone said that he wanted to believe the gospel, I believe, but he thought it led to him acting as a pig if he did. He then says some terrible things about even people in his live stream chat. Take a look.

>> Sam, what you're relying on so far isn't working for you. I think people can see that. You don't seem to have a heart transformed by grace. You seem to be someone who's trying to pull himself up by his own bootstraps. Get God to accept him because he thinks he's faithful enough. Everyone else can see it, Sam. You're not faithful enough. I'm not faithful enough. None of us are faithful enough to get to heaven based on what we do. It's only what Christ did. So what should you rely upon, Sam? If you know your own inabilities, you mention you struggle with sin all the time. Why not just rely 100% on Christ's faithfulness and not your own? And then you can know for sure 100% that you're going to heaven because it doesn't rest on you but him. That's good news. And this gospel message I'm preaching, which is the same message found all throughout scripture, is not at all like Islam. Like that person mentioned, it's the opposite to Islam. Islam lines up more with Sam Shimon's view. Be faithful enough. Do your Ramadan. Do your acts of obedience. And hopefully, fingers crossed, you'll go to heaven. That's Sam's position. Do good things. Be obedient. Be faithful. And hopefully, fingers crossed, you don't die in a state of mortal sin and then you can go to heaven. No security, no certainty. And so my prayers for Sam is that he sees that this gospel of grace is one the biblical one, but two, it's the only thing that's going to save him from hell, but three, this won't make him more lawless. It's going to change his behavior for the better. So join me in praying for him. So far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children.
