[Music] So, [Music] seven years ago, eight years ago or so, I did a video on the FN 57. And in that video, I called it the hipster's gun because, quite frankly, it looked and felt like what a hipster would buy who was looking for his first gun, wanted something different, something unique, something that made him stand out from the rest. And that gun, honestly, was the FN 57. That's why I call it a hipster gun.
However, that gun has been around for a while, and you know, FN figured, why not update a modern classic? And um, that's exactly what they did with the FN 57 Mark III MRD. So this gun gave me a little bit of a conundrum. And the reason why is because I was so used to the old version that seeing this gun, the way that it looks now, it kind of threw me off for a second because I didn't know how I felt. Because the other gun was so unique-looking to begin with itself. So when I saw this, I didn't say, "Wow, that looks great," or "Wow, that looks terrible," or "Wow, that looks unique." I just honestly felt nothing. It took me a second after I shot it, and I shot it quite a bit. Um, this is my mine; it's mine; this is all mine. My friend sent me this one, uh, but I did go to an FN event where we were able to shoot the gun for an extended period of time, and that's what we did. And so they showed this to me, and I thought, "Well, that's interesting." And what ended up happening was, over time, I started to kind of really adjust to the way this gun looks.
Because when you think about the old version—the old version, as you can see here, this is the old version—the old version was curvaceous; it was sultry, as I said in one of my video reels on Instagram. But this gun was a rather unique-looking gun, and it honestly was very divisive. Some people hated it; some people loved it. But you rarely found people who were in the middle. I was on the side of the people who actually really loved the way that this gun looked.
Um, however, there is one thing I did not like, and that was on this gun that unfortunately made its way to the new version of this gun, and that's the safety. I hate the safety. I freaking hate it. I, I initially used to think it would be pretty intuitive after a period of time with your fingers. No, I still stumble over it; I fumble over it. Oh, crap. So if I were able to carry this gun—and yes, I kind of started thinking about whether or not I carry a 5.7, that's later on in the video—but if I were gonna carry it, I'm just gonna ignore the safety altogether. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't exist because I hate it.
Now let's talk about some of the differences on this gun. The biggest functional difference on this gun is the ability to mount a red dot on it. Now you have the ability to mount a red dot directly to this gun, which I think changes this gun. I think it puts it in a different category than it was before. The older versions, you could do some aftermarket stuff and get a red dot on it. Um, I wasn't too inclined to do that; never felt the need to do it; didn't want to do it. But now that it has the easy ability to do it, and the gun actually does come with different plates for different red dots, as you can see here, I'm running the Leupold Delta Point Pro. Once you do that, to me, this gun becomes a very viable gun from a self-defense concealed carry standpoint. But like I said, I'll get to that later, maybe in this video, maybe in a different video.
So the other functional difference on this gun is going to be grips or ergonomics. From an ergonomic standpoint, the gun has changed ever so slightly, as you can see here. It still has the same grip angle, but it has a different texture. The old texture on the older version of the gun was kind of—it wasn't—it wasn't bad; it was pretty good, but it was a little stale. I love this kind of granulated texturing that you get on this, which is kind of very reminiscent of the 509; that's essentially what it is. Um, and I like it a lot. I do. Um, you notice the difference; the back and the front part of the grip is actually pretty much the same as the old version, but then you get this kind of 509 style grip. Then on top of that, one other difference is going to be the magazine. The magazine on this gun is different, which sucks because initially you're like, "Oh man, I won't be able to use other magazines from old, from the older FN 57s." That's not exactly true. Now it doesn't fit flush, like, as you can see here, it's flush when you do put it in; you'll have like a little gap here, um, that you kind of have to slap it in there a little bit. It doesn't work perfectly, but the gun runs just fine with it in there. Gun still locks back; does all those things; it's just not going to be super clean. But neither here nor there because I'm pretty sure I don't really—I don't really know how many people are actually going to have this gun on top of the old version of the gun. But for those that do, have no fear; you can still run your old magazines here.
But the biggest thing, the biggest difference honestly, is the way this gun looks. It's more modern, essentially, is what it is. Now when I look at the old version of the gun, it doesn't look old to me when I see it by itself. However, when I put this gun right next to it—we can do that right now—when I put this gun right next to it, this gun starts to show its age a lot more, as you can see here. It's not bad; it still, to me, gives—it has a timeless classicness to it. However, this gun looks incredibly more modern, and a lot of it has to do with the fact that it has straight lines; it's very clean. Um, as you can see here, we got a difference in the actual, uh, the checkering on the grip on the slide. You still have the full polymer wrap around on the slide. This gun still is very light. From an ergonomic standpoint, in my hand, this gun honestly feels ever so slightly a little bit bigger, and I think it has to do with the kind of more angular aspects of the gun versus this gun here. However, because of some of the added ergonomic features, like this kind of indention here for your fingers, the way this kind of has a bit of a humpback here and gets up under the gun, though the gun feels a little bit bigger in my hands, it feels more comfortable in my hands versus the old one, if that makes any sense whatsoever. Of course, you got, you know, we got here trusty dusty rail for my Surefire X300 light. And just gonna be honest, between the Delta Point Pro and the Surefire light, they, they just work; they just worked. Especially this Delta Point Pro on this gun; it looks like it was made for this particular gun.
So how does the damn thing shoot? With all this talking, how does the gun shoot? Well, like the old one. I'm sorry; I would like to stand here and tell you, "Oh my god, this is such an amazing, more better shooting version of the old gun." No, it shoots like the old one. Um, the trigger's slightly different. Um, let's see; let's talk about the trigger a little bit. Trigger. See, as you can see here, see, told you; old magazine, new gun, rock; still works. Um, the trigger is ever so slightly different. I don't even think it's different enough to even warrant talking about it. I'm gonna be honest with you, it is. If I had to pick and choose between this trigger and the old one, I'm gonna be honest, I'm probably gonna go with the old one. Um, but I mean, we're splitting microscopic hairs of difference here. Um, I know some people who shot this gun, and they felt that they really prefer the old trigger better. Me, it's a toss-up. I really, I'm—it's not neither here nor there for me. But as far as shootability, what really changes is the fact that I have this red dot on here. And if there's a gun that you know—a lot of people know that I'm being kind of back and forth about my thoughts on red dots—and I, on this gun, it makes sense. And the reason it makes sense because this gun just shoots so flat, and so I don't get a lot of jumpiness with my red dot. It still inspires some of the confidence that I get running iron sights. And speaking of iron sights, we have these rear adjustable sights here with a suppressor height sight, um, suppressor, suppressor height front sight with, uh, illuminations. The old one didn't have any of the illumination, so that kind of sucked in the dark because you couldn't really see your sights. I'm gonna be honest with you, I don't give two shits about these sights; I really don't. Because this gun is a hundred, hundred percent, 100 percent of the time going to be run with a red dot on it. I don't care about these sights. Again, this gun was already an amazing shooter running the 5.7. The gun is—I mean, look, we're talking rifle rounds in a handgun. This thing comes out screaming, screaming. But then also has very light recoil, and because of that, it allows you to just run this damn thing like a freaking lunatic, and I love it. Love it; I love it; I love it; I love it; I love it; I love it. Uh, it's just a gun that really gives a lot in terms of confidence when you're shooting the gun. And I think now, getting to the point that I talked about earlier, why this could honestly make a great case for a concealed carry gun, and why I'm actually considering maybe trying to carry this gun more so than I ever thought I would before. Between all of those things, and then of course the capacity, it's still the same 20-round capacity on this gun. So, and I'm pretty sure they're going to have a 30-round capacity for it as well. That I mean, that package, 20 rounds of 5.7 in this package with these options and these features, you honestly can't beat it. If you can get around carrying it, and for me, it's going to be a size issue. I think it might be a little too big than what I'm used to, but I'm still going to try to do it anyway. I may have to forego the light; I may keep the light; who knows. Either way, this gun—good job; good job, FN. I think—I think the evolution—it's more of an evolution than a revolution—um, and I think deservedly so.
So FN 57 MRD Mark III. I'll let you—boy, you know how frightening it is to think about what happens in the moments before, during, and even days after having to use your gun in self-defense.
