Think muscle building after 50 is slow and frustrating? It is.
If you're still training and eating like you did in your 20s, once you hit 50, everything starts to slow down. Your testosterone drops, recovery takes longer, and most importantly, you develop something called anabolic resistance. That means your body doesn't respond to protein or even training the way it used to. Even if you're doing everything right, you're probably not building muscle.
I'm 51 and I've been training for over 30 years. And I've also helped thousands of men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s rebuild lean muscle and their confidence by doing it the right way for their age and their body. Let's start here.
To beat anabolic resistance, you need more protein and a better training stimulus. For protein, aim for 0.8 to 1 g per pound of your goal body weight. And for training, push your sets close to failure with control and not ego lifting, though. Sloppy sets won't send the signal it needs. Precision and intensity will.
Next, you've got to support muscle growth with the right nutrients. Your hormones depend on zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, and B vitamins. Most guys over 50 are deficient, and it's killing their progress. Eat a nutrient-dense diet and supplement where needed to protect your recovery, testosterone, and metabolism.
Now, let's talk training. Stick to three to four resistance workouts per week. Use compound lifts, squats, dumbbell bench presses, back rows. Train in the six to 12 rep range with slow eccentrics and use a full range of motion. You don't need five or six days in the gym. You need smart sessions that stimulate growth and give your body time to recover.
Finally, move more outside the gym. Muscle is use it or lose it. Daily movement boosts recovery, regulates insulin, and helps fight muscle breakdown. Yard work, walking, hiking, pickle ball, doesn't matter what it is. Just stay active and give your body a reason to keep performing.
Look, building muscle after 50 is absolutely possible, but it won't happen if you're still just guessing. DM me the word muscle and I'll connect with you. We'll talk through what's holding you back, and if you're ready, I'll help you build a plan specific for your body, your schedule, and your goals. Let's fix what's not working and start building your body the right way.
