Good morning. Welcome everyone. I'm teacher Neo with English teacher Neo and we're going into a coffee shop and I'm going to be visiting with my niece. Let's go. Yeah.

You want to sit at a table or sit over there? Maybe a table. Do you know what you want? No.

What is the best thing here? I like white chocolate mocha. That's probably my favorite thing. That sounds pretty good. That does sound good. It is. A lot of people are liking the cookie butter Oh. cold brew, which is like white chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and hazelnut. Okay. Can I put that in a hot hot tea? Yep. I can do that. Huh. I will go ahead and try that. Yeah. What size would you like? A medium. Yeah.
>> And you want it in a hot hot tea, too? Yes. Sure. And I'll do 16 oz, as well. So. 10 36. Okay. Okay.
So, we ordered our drinks and she is making them now for us. So. In a coffee shop here, they have different things that they put on their their specials. So, April specials, it looks like honey bee latte, caramel cookie cold brew, things like that. That's kind of neat. And then there's some tea here and they have shirts for sale as well. And then up here is their menu and their prices.
How is your coffee? I haven't even tried it yet. I'm scared it's going to burn my throat.
>> [laughter]
It's not that hot. I mean, for me. Oh, that's good. Yeah.
>> That is really good.
>> Yeah, definitely. We got What What was it called? Cookie butter something. Yeah. It's like cookie butter with white mocha. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it.
>> it's what she said. Yeah, it is really good. And a latte. And a latte. Not the cold brew.
>> Mhm. I'm not a fan of cold brew. No? No. My friend is. She every time she loves her cold brew coffees. So yeah, I'll take a like a iced latte, but a cold brew Yeah. I just I don't I don't like it.
>> Yeah. I like my hot more. Mhm. In the afternoons when if it's hot out, sometimes I'll go with a cold brew just because it's just nice to have something refreshing.
>> Yeah. But anyways, I love your bag. Thanks.
>> I got it. Um I was on Facebook one night
>> Mhm.
at like midnight. I'm going to show everybody. This is kind of cool.
>> [laughter]
You see? Look, books. It's Edgar Allan Poe. That is awesome. Let me get that out of the way.
>> Yeah. Um but yeah, I was on Facebook and I saw it and I spent probably a little more money than I should [laughter] have on it. That's hilarious.
>> with a matching wallet.
>> Oh, it does. Wow, that's awesome.

>> I love it. I get When I'm at work, I leave it like on one of the back counters and I have people ask me all the time, "Where did you get that?" "Whose purse is that? It's so cute." Nice.
>> [laughter]
>> And then your phone. Oh, my phone case. Look at that phone case. It's books and ghosts. Yeah, that's so cool. So, I'm guessing one of your favorite things to do is read. Yes, I do have a whole library box stuff. [laughter] That's awesome. Yes, I need Whenever I move out, I need to get a really big bunch of bookshelves.
>> Yeah, yeah. Because I have a lot. Don't you wish that you could have your own room that's a library? Yeah, I probably almost have enough books to do that. Yeah. I used to.
>> love to have them on display and not in a cabinet boxed away or anything. Yeah. Mhm. I had lots and lots and lots of books.
>> [laughter]
>> I know, I took some of your books.
>> Yes, you did. I did take some of your books. Man.
>> [laughter]
>> But I had to unfortunately give them away.
>> [laughter]
>> So. But it's all good. Eventually I'll have my library.
>> [laughter]
>> So. I'll get I can't wait until I have mine. Yeah. Okay, so Wow, we're cut off.

>> All right, so I'm here with my niece and I'm going to have her introduce herself and tell a little little bit about her. Hi, I'm Dallas. Um I live with my grandparents right now, Mark and Carolyn. Um I work at a clinic as a phlebotomist, which I just draw people's blood all day, so my love lovely lab processing people can run the actual tests. What's your favorite thing about your job? Um probably This might sound a little selfish. Um how important we are.
>> [laughter]
>> How important the lab is. We just had lab week, so celebrate all of your lab people. Yeah. But I mean, we really are because we are behind almost all of the diagnoses that you get. Okay. Um We see every patient at the clinic. Everybody comes to us. Yeah. Um whether they want to or not.
>> [laughter]
>> Everybody does. Yeah. So your favorite part about your job is just being your position there.
>> Yeah, my position there. Being able to help, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, cuz it is getting getting the correct results is very, very important for your health so you can get treated properly. Got you. Yeah, I love helping people [clears throat] and that's it's a good feeling when you can help, so. Yeah. It's all I know. Even before I was phlebotomist.
>> [laughter]
>> Nice. Very nice. So how old are you, Dallas? I am 24.
>> [snorts]
>> And are you single? I am single. Okay, there [laughter] you go, guys. All right, 24. When is your birthday? It is September 15th. All right, very good. So um so you're going to be 25 soon. I am. My frontal lobe is going to be fully developed. Wow.
>> I know. What are you
>> going to do to celebrate that? I'd probably read.
>> [laughter]
>> Probably stay at home and read a book. I don't know. That's funny. Yes. Yeah. Um what are your favorite books? My favorite books? Oh my goodness. This might take me a minute. Obviously Edgar Allan Poe stories. I absolutely love it. Um I like horror stories. Yeah.
>> Like ghost stories. Um I don't read a lot of romance or anything like that. Um Right now I'm reading The Stand by Stephen King. Right. Very very thick book. Yeah. Um I am reading it on my phone though, but I do have a physical copy somewhere. In a box.
>> [laughter]
>> It's always nice to read it on the physical copy.
>> It is. Yes, especially since my phone gives me headaches. Yeah, that's true. I can't read for too long or be on it for too long. For sure. But I don't know what box it's in, unfortunately. That's funny. No idea. Being a phlebotomist, how many years of school did you have to go to? I actually didn't. Okay.
>> Um so the clinic I work at trained me. Oh, nice. Um the only downside to that is if I would want to go somewhere else for whatever reason, I would either have to be nationally certified or see if they would train me there. Okay. Um cuz I'm not nationally certified Wow.
>> as a phlebotomist. Interesting. Which I didn't know you could do until I started working in the lab. Interesting. Wow. [laughter] That's cool. Interesting. What is I'm cuz I'm curious about all this. What is probably the worst diagnosis that you've come across? So, I actually don't see any of the diagnoses.
>> Okay. Um I do see a lot of tests for cancer. Mhm. Um a lot [clears throat] of tests uh PSA test is one of the most common. It's a uh checks your prostate for prostate cancer.
>> Okay. Um And that's most common? It is really common. I see it so many times a day. Um I see a lot of tumor marker tests that they do. Yeah. Trying to think. Think that's about it. Maybe, but I don't see any of the results since I'm not like back in the back.
>> Um But you get you know what they're testing for.
>> Yes. Okay. Yes.
>> Yeah. Hm, interesting. Uh besides reading, what's another hobby that you have? Um I like to paint. Oh, okay.
>> Yes. Yep. I hide all of my I artwork. You won't see it. Except if you go to my mom's. My mom's house does have some of my stuff up in her house.
>> Okay. In her bedroom, I think. Yeah. Um yeah. So, what kind of paints do you use? Um acrylic. Okay. All right, very nice.
>> Acrylic. I have watercolors, but I don't use those very often cuz I have not learned a good technique to not just have it spread out everywhere. Oh, that makes [laughter] sense. Yeah. Yeah, I'm I'm not a painter. I mean, I like to do those um little sessions where you go it's called Sip and Paint or whatever.
>> not done one of those. You should.
>> I want to so bad. So, but I do it and it's very hard because I want it to look perfect. Yeah, I also want my stuff to look perfect, which is why a lot of it is not
>> [laughter]
>> out for everybody to see because I'm like, "It's not perfect. Nobody can see it."
>> [laughter]
>> That's funny. Yeah, so So, what do you plan to do for like your future? You know, are you going to continue doing being a phlebotomist or do you want to do something more? So, I've been thinking about this a lot recently. That's so funny that you ask. Um I think that I want to go into working in the lab processing. I do have to go back to school for that.
>> Mhm. Um but I kind of just want to see what's on like the other side of things.
>> Yeah. Um being able to read the tests and send it out to the doctors and all of that.
>> That's cool. Yeah. So, but I'm still looking into it. Yeah. But it has been on my mind. Nice. Before this, what did you do as a job? Um I was a CNA for 6 years and then I got my CMA, which is a medication aid. Okay. And what is CNA? Uh certified nursing assistant.
>> Okay. And then a CMA is a certified medical assistant.
>> Okay. Um I was a CNA for 6 years and then a CMA for 2. Um worked in a lot of nursing homes. Um I recently quit that in August. I think the first week of August was my last time. It was a very hard transition.
>> Uh-huh. It was very, very hard. Um cuz I'd been doing it for so long. Okay. Got you.
>> For How old were you when you first became a CNA? I was 16, 16 or 17. Okay. I think I was 16. Yeah.
>> I'm trying to think of the timeline. Right.
>> Yeah. I was 16. Um and I worked in my hometown for about 2 and 1/2 years. And then when I went to And I worked there while I was going through college. Mhm. Um and then I went when I went to my next college I started working as like a travel CNA.
>> Mhm. Um just in the state of Kansas, but I would go to different facilities all over the place. Long drives. Yeah.
>> Long drives after long shifts. That's crazy.
>> Yeah. I would have been tired. Super tired.
>> [laughter]
>> I got pulled over once.
>> Oh, no. And they were like, "What are you doing?" And I was like, "I'm just tired." I [laughter] was like, "I'm sorry."
>> [clears throat]
>> Yeah. Wow. Crazy. So, um so do you like coffee shops then? I do. I love coffee shops. I like little coffee shops.
>> Yeah. I just um feel like I don't have time to stop in them a lot.
>> Mhm. Especially in the morning before I go to work cuz I have to wake up at 5:00 in the morning. Every day. Mhm. Here's your Here's your question. [snorts] Um what is your morning routine like?
>> Um so I usually wake up between 5:00 and 5:30. I try to Um I get up. I check on my cat. Well, she screams at me every morning. What is your cat's name? Coco. Coco. I've had her for 14 years. Wow.
>> Yeah, she is an old lady. I had a horse named Coco. Really?
>> Mhm.
>> [laughter]
>> Um and then I shower, do my skin care, do my hair. Um I try to make coffee at home and eat breakfast. Sometimes it doesn't always happen. Yeah. Um and then at about I try to leave my house between 6:00 35 and 6:45 to go to work? Mhm. Because I live 35 minutes away from my job. Right. And I have to be there before 7:30. And it's usually still dark at that time or is the sun coming up now?
>> The sun is coming up now and it's really throwing me off. I'm [laughter] like, "I'm so late." And I'm not. It's not even 7:00 yet. I understand. That's funny. Yeah. So So what do you do when you get to work?
>> [snorts]
>> Um I get all of our computers turned on. Um I make sure that everything is stocked, which it usually is cuz I'm the one who does it at the end of the day because I'm there till 5:30 at night.
>> Wow. Um but I make sure everything is stocked. I get all my stuff that like my person, drinks, and whatever and I put it all away. Yeah. Um
>> [sighs]
>> and then if I'm on the desk checking people in, then I'll get on one of our front computers and start checking people in and printing off the papers and the labels. Yeah. Um but if I'm not, I have to wait for that person to do all of that. And then I can start poking people. All right. Perfect.
>> Yes. And then you poke all day. And then I poke all day. I do. I do. All day long. Nice. Uh have you had people faint? Yes, so funny fact fun fun little story.
>> Yeah. Um my first 2 weeks, I think it was, 2 or 3 weeks
>> Uh-huh. that I had just started learning. Yeah. Um I had a guy, probably about 45 years old, come in with his wife and they gave me no warning. They just said that he needed to sit in one of like the recliners and nobody had really talked to me about people fainting and it never really crossed my mind cuz I don't faint when I get my blood drawn. Right. [laughter] Um but I was sitting there and he was talking to his wife and I had all my stuff set up and I got you know, the first tube filled up and I went and put the second tube in and like nothing was happening. And I look up and his wife is holding his head in her hand. Like he's just Oh gosh.
>> [laughter]
>> Oh no. His wife can't holding his head and I was like, I panicked. I was like, "Help." I was like, "I need help. I don't know what's happening." And then I cried. Oh no.
>> [laughter]
>> I did. I did cry. I felt so bad. Yeah. Um later I found out that it had happened to him every time he had his blood drawn. Okay.
>> Um and I think they just assumed that I would under like understand that, not knowing how new I was. Um but I have had I think maybe one other person pass out while I was doing it.
>> Okay. I try not to make people pass out, but yeah. It happens. I get to the point to where I'm going to pass out, [snorts] but I let the nurses know ahead of time that, "Hey, I'm I need to get down there on the floor right now."
>> Yes,
>> [laughter]
>> please let your Please let your phlebotomist know if you pass out while you get your blood drawn.
>> [laughter]
>> Don't make it a surprise for all of us. Yeah, the only time that I've ever passed out in my whole life was when I got my ear pierced up here. Yeah.
>> [laughter]
>> Um I went in. I was like, what, 19, I think, and went in to get my ear pierced, and she um punched it in, but it didn't go all the way, so she had to push it the rest of the way, which was fine, but I heard the crunching noise. That threw me off. Yeah. And then she was like, "Okay, we're done." I'm like, "Okay, how much do I owe you?" And then I was getting ready to get up. I'm like, "Okay, I need to sit back down." You know, and I've already had issues before I was a CNA as well, so I had all those shots that you need and TB. I mean, I almost passed out with that. Yeah, but I see dots, but I never pass out. So this time I was like, "I just need to sit here for a moment because I see dots." And it'll be fine. I'll pass. She's like, "Are you okay? Are you sure?" I'm like, "Yeah, it's fine." And I'm sitting there, and then I'm like, "Oh, here I go." And my head went down. Oh, no. I was like, uh yep, I can't I'm going to go. Bye, you know. And I woke up, and her and some gentleman that was in there cuz he was the next person in line. Um they were standing there and I looked up and I'm like "How long was I just asleep?" I felt like I slept for hours.
>> Oh, no.
>> like, "It was only a few seconds. You scared me." I'm like, "Really?" Like that was a nice little nap for me.
>> [laughter]
>> So, that's the only time I've ever passed out and I know when I'm going to get ready to, so I know I know what to do. But it's crazy. Um but anyways, yeah. So, um I've been to several coffee shops, you know. Mhm. I love coffee shops.
>> [laughter]
>> I love going to them. I love the cozy ones. Mhm. Uh
>> [snorts]
>> even like my friend and I when we go to Colorado, our trip to Colorado, we'll stop at coffee shops. You know how people go bar hopping? We go coffee shop hopping.
>> I love that.
>> Yeah. I need to do that. You should. It's It's pretty cool. And then we just kind of walk around the coffee shop and look at things and stuff and um but like I said, Sage River Market Coffee, it's cute. You need to go in there and look at it little details and stuff. It's It's adorable.
