First 60 Minutes After Waking Decide Whether You Lose OR Gain 30+ lbs

Most people think they gain belly fat because of what they eat. They're wrong.

In fact, before 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, millions of Americans will accidentally trigger the exact biological switch that tells their body to store more fat around their organs. Fat just like this. And the scary part? Most of them will do it before eating a single bite of food. No donuts, no junk food, no cheating. Just one completely normal habit that's quietly increasing insulin resistance, raising cortisol, and making fat loss feel impossible.

This might be the missing piece. Because what I'm about to show you has almost nothing to do with calories. It has almost nothing to do with exercise. And it has everything to do with the first 60 minutes after you open your eyes.

You see, within minutes of waking up, your metabolism makes a critical decision. It decides whether today is the day to burn stored fat or to protect that stored fat. And most people unknowingly send the wrong signals to their metabolism before they even brush their teeth.

I'm going to show you right now the seven morning mistakes that silently tell your body hold on to belly fat. And one of them is considered healthy. One of them is recommended by wellness influencers on your TikTok feed. And the last one is the hidden villain tying it all together. Once you learn this, you'll never look at the morning the same way again. And stay with me till the end because I'm going to show you the exact first hour fat burning routine I personally use to flip this biological switch in your favor every single day.

Here's a quick gut check. Just answer this in your head right now. Do you wake up tired even after a full night of sleep? Do you need coffee to function like a human? Do you crash around 2:00 p.m. and start looking for sugar? Do you carry stubborn fat on your body that doesn't move no matter what you do? And are you hungry two to three hours after you've eaten a full meal?

If you said yes to even a couple of those, I bet money that you're making the same mistakes I'm about to show you. But, the good news is that none of them are your fault. You were never told how to correct it.

Let's start with mistake number one. That's going to be checking your phone the second you wake up. Be honest. Your phone is your alarm. So, the first thing your hand does every morning is to grab it. And then you catch yourself scrolling. Email, text messages, Instagram, the news telling you the world is on fire. But, here's what your brain doesn't understand. It doesn't know you're just checking Instagram. It can't tell the difference between a notification and an actual threat. All it sees is stimulation, urgency, and stress before your feet even hit the floor.

You see, there's a hormone that naturally spikes within 30 to 45 minutes after you've woken up. It's called the cortisol awakening response. And it's supposed to happen. It's your body's built-in jump-start. The problem is when you pile artificial stress on top of it.

And get this, in February 2025, researchers published a study in PNAS Nexus, where they had people block their mobile internet on their phones for 2 weeks. Just 2 weeks, 14 days. And that one change improved their sustained attention, their mental health, and their overall well-being. Their attention scores improved by an amount the researchers compared to reversing about a decade of age-related decline from not staring at a screen.

Now, flip that around. If removing it does that much good, what do you think staring at your phone every single morning is doing to your stress hormones, your focus, and yeah, your waistline? See, when you do this, you're walking into survival mode on purpose. And survival mode and fat-burning mode are not the same thing.

It turns out the fat around your organs, called the visceral fat, kind of looks like this. This is 5 lb of visceral fat. The receptor sites for cortisol are triple in your belly fat in your visceral fat compared to other areas of your body. That's why it's called the cortisol belly and it's one of the things I get on my wife's case every morning because she has the tendency to grab her phone. Yet, she doesn't really listen to my advice. Maybe she'll watch this video.

Let's get into mistake number two. Drinking coffee before water. When you wake up, you're dehydrated. You just went 7, 8, maybe 9 hours without a single sip of water and you were breathing out the moisture the whole time, which means your blood is literally thicker in the morning. So, what do most people reach for first? Not water. They reach for coffee, caffeine. When you do that, you're pouring a stimulant on top of an already stressed, already dehydrated system. It's like throwing gasoline on a fire and wondering why you feel jittery and starving by 10:00 a.m.

And look, I'm not anti-coffee. I love coffee, but I am anti-coffee as your first input first thing in the morning. Look, even mild dehydration messes with your energy, your mood, and how hungry you feel. A lot of what people call hunger at 11:00 a.m. is just thirst wearing a costume. So, water first and add some minerals in it. Then your coffee a little later and I'll give you the exact best timing for that coffee towards the end of this lesson. And it changes everything about how the rest of your day feels.

Mistake number three, never getting morning sunlight. This is one of the most underrated items on the entire list and this one is free. You see, your body runs on an internal clock. Scientists call it your circadian rhythm. That clock controls when you release cortisol, when you release melatonin. And here's the kicker, it also controls how sensitive you are to insulin throughout the day. Insulin is the only fat storage hormone inside of your body and about 93% of Americans are insulin resistant and a big part of it is their circadian rhythm is thrown off.

You see most people never set that clock. They roll out of bed, walk around their house that's lit by light bulbs, artificial light. They drive to work and or work from home and sit behind computer screens and fluorescent lights all day long. Their body literally never gets the signal that the day has started.

There's research showing that people who get natural sunlight during the day have lower fasting insulin and better insulin sensitivity even after you account for body fat and the season. So your body simply handles sugar and carbohydrates better from getting light at the right time. Oh, and it goes the other way too. When researchers exposed people to bright light at the wrong time like in the evening, it can actually increase their insulin resistance and spike their blood sugar higher after a meal. So light is not just about your mood. Light is a blood sugar tool. It's a fat loss tool and almost nobody's using it. 10 to 30 minutes of real sunlight in your eyes within the first hour of waking up meaning take off your sunglasses. That's the whole hack. You see your grandmother did it without even knowing it. We forget and if you have a dog, it's perfect. Go walk your dog outside first thing in the morning. That's exactly what I do and that's how I get my sunlight first thing in the morning.

Mistake number four, eating a healthy high carbohydrate breakfast. Okay, this is a big one. This is the one that's going to sting because you've been told it's the healthy choice pretty much your entire life. The cereal, the oatmeal, the whole grain toast, the yogurt with the fruit at the bottom, the granola and the orange juice, the healthy muffin at your favorite coffee place. Look, the average breakfast is dessert disguised as health food.

When you wake up your body is calm, your blood sugar is stable. But when you eat a giant pile of carbohydrates first thing in the morning, your blood sugar shoots up. Your pancreas has to release insulin to deal with that extra blood sugar. And when insulin is high, you are storing fat. Then, what happens an hour and a half later, that blood sugar drops steeply because of the insulin production. So, then your blood sugar crashes. What does that crash feel like? Shakeness, foggy. Your brain tells the body, "Go get more carbs. Go get more sugar." So, you grab another snack. And then you're on a blood sugar roller coaster all day long, and you're in fat storage mode from morning to night time.

Now, here's the flip side, and I want you to share this with somebody cuz it's very fascinating. There's a study out of the University of Missouri where they fed young people a high protein breakfast, and they watched their brains on an fMRI scanner. The protein breakfast actually reduced the brain signals tied to food cravings and reward-driven eating, not willpower. It was brain activity. They literally wanted less junk food for hours because of what they ate first thing. In another body of research, women eating protein at breakfast instead of a carb-based breakfast lost significantly more weight and shaved significantly more off their waist circumference in just over 8 weeks. Same calories, different first meal. So, the issue isn't that you're eating breakfast, it's what you're putting in first. Protein first changes the entire day. And we'll get to the how in just a minute.

But, first let's get to mistake number five, eating too soon after you wake up. Now, this one's subtle and it's connected to the last one. Most people wake up and they eat within 5 to 15 minutes after they've woken up every single day. They never give their body an extra window to tap into stored body fat for fuel. Think about it. Overnight, while you slept, your insulin came down, your body finally started tapping into fat for fuel. That's the window. That's the good part. But, when you wake up and eat immediately, especially carbohydrates, insulin spikes and that window gets slammed shut. You shut off fat burning before heading out the door. And then you do it again tomorrow and the next day after that.

Now, this isn't about starving yourself or doing some extreme fasting. It's simply about not sprinting to the fridge the second you open your eyes. Just simply pushing your first meal back a little bit while you hydrate, get sunshine and hopefully move your body and go for a short walk. This lets your body stay in fat burning mode a little bit longer. Most people have never given their body that chance, not once. But, we're going to fix that.

Mistake number six, sitting down right after you eat. You eat breakfast, then you do what everybody does. You sit at your desk, in your car, on the couch with your laptop. And while you're sitting still, the glucose from that meal is just floating around in your bloodstream with nowhere to go. So, insulin keeps climbing to force it into storage, fat storage.

And here's a fascinating study I want you to remember. A study in Diabetes Care took older adults at risk for diabetes and had them take three short 15-minute walks, one after each meal. Just a 15-minute walk. And those three little walks controlled their blood sugar over 24 hours as well as one long 45-minute walk. It was the after-meal walk that was the magic. And in another study, walking right after meals lowered blood sugar significantly more than the same amount of walking done at other times of the day. Same minutes, but it was better timing, better results.

Here's why this works. This is the cool part. When your muscles contract during a light walk, they pull glucose out of your blood without needing insulin. It's kind of like a sponge to absorb the glucose. So, you're kind of clearing the extra glucose in the bloodstream through a side door that doesn't ask your fat storage hormone insulin for permission. So, simply one walk after eating, 10 to 15 minutes. That's it. And this one is the single easiest win on this entire list, and you could start it tomorrow.

Mistake number seven, starting the day in full survival mode. This is the master villain. The phone in your face, the coffee first thing in the morning on empty stomach, rushing, skipping the light, listening to the news, getting stuck in traffic, notifications buzzing the entire morning, the entire day. Look, your body doesn't know you're just late for a meeting. It reads all of these stressors as one thing, danger, run. So, it floods you with cortisol, and it keeps it high all day long. And chronically high levels of cortisol does something specific. As I mentioned earlier, it tells your metabolism to store fat in one specific spot, around your organs, your heart, your kidneys, your liver, your pancreas, your precious vital organs, deep in your belly. This is called visceral fat. It's like a parasite inside of your belly, and it's the most dangerous type of fat linked to inflammation, cancer, heart disease, and other scary metabolic syndrome diseases out there.

Look, survival mode is not the same thing as fat burning mode. Your body will never let go of fat when it thinks you're being chased. It just won't, because the number one priority for the human body is survival. So, why would it want you to burn fat when it thinks it needs to survive. So, if your whole morning is one huge stress signal stacked after another, you're telling your body to hold on to every pound of fat. And then we blame ourselves for not having enough discipline. Well, it was never about the willpower. It was never about the discipline.

Now, stop and notice something. As we go back through all seven of these mistakes, not one of them was about overeating. Not one was about junk food. Not one was even about exercise. All of them happened before breakfast, before calories, before the day even really got started. So, understand that your metabolism is not broken. Your body is not betraying you. It's doing exactly what it's designed to do. It's responding to the signals you're handing it every single morning. Which means the moment you change the signals, the body changes its answer. So, you're not fighting your biology. You've been accidentally voting against yourself before 9:00 a.m. So, let's flip every vote here.

Here's the exact routine. Seven steps, one for each of the mistakes I've outlined. You can do this whole thing within the first hour of your day.

Step one, no phone for at least the first 30 minutes. Let that natural cortisol rise do its job without you dumping extra stress on top of it. Your nervous system gets to wake up calm instead of concerned. Just 30 minutes. Look, your inbox will survive, I promise.

Step two, water with minerals before anything else. Hydrate before you caffeinate. Rehydrate the system before you stimulate it. A big glass of water, a pinch of high-quality salt, mineral mix, or unflavored electrolytes. This alone kills a surprising amount of the hunger you feel mid-morning.

Step three, sunlight in your eyes within the first 30 minutes after waking up. Step outside, no sunglasses, 10 to 30 minutes. Even if it's overcast outside, you're going to benefit here. See, you're setting the clock that controls your insulin sensitivity, your energy, and your sleep tonight. And it's free, and it's ridiculously powerful.

Step four, a 10-to-15-minute walk. Might as well get your body moving while you're getting that light. So, you're stacking two wins at once. And if you go for that walk after you eat your first meal of the day, you're pulling glucose out of the blood through that insulin-free side door that we spoke about earlier.

Step five, delay the caffeine. Wait 90 minutes to have your cup of coffee. Get your water, your minerals, get your light and movement. Then when you have your coffee an hour and a half after you wake up, that coffee is going to have a bigger bang for its buck. It's going to give you more energy and sustainable energy throughout the rest of the day because at that point cortisol begins to taper down and that's where your body will maximize the caffeine benefits.

Step six, when you have your first meal, whether it's breakfast or maybe you practice fasting, so maybe it's lunch. But either way, make sure it's protein first. Build that first meal around protein. Eggs with the yolk and half an avocado or a high-quality protein shake. Whatever fits your life. When you do this, you're blunting the blood sugar roller coaster and quietly shutting down the craving signals in your brain for hours. Aim to get at least 30 g of protein at that first meal of the day. When you do that, this is the difference between chasing food all day long and forgetting you were even hungry.

Step seven, build a calm nervous system before you start work. A few slow breaths through your nose, a minute of quietness. Whatever gets you out of survival mode before the day grabs you because remember, survival mode and fat burning mode cannot coexist together. For every step here, you're answering one question for your body. Are we safe or are we burning? When the answer is yes, fat loss stops being a fight.

Now here's something most people never hear. Let's say you actually do everything we talked about today. You stop checking your phone first thing. You get your sunlight, you hydrate, you walk, you delay caffeine, you start eating protein. Fantastic. You're finally sending your body the right signals. But there is another piece to the puzzle here because the signals are about half of the equation. The other half is giving your body the right fuel to respond to those signals. And after age 30, that's where most people start running into trouble.

You see, your body's natural creatine production gradually declines as you age, which means the exact things we're trying to improve in this lesson. Energy, metabolic health, muscle maintenance, recovery, brain performance, and healthy aging all become harder to support when creatine reserves drop. It's not because your metabolism is broken. It's not because aging automatically means decline. It's simply because your body has less of this key compound it used to make more naturally when you were younger.

So, that's the reason I personally take creatine every single day, but not just any creatine. The one that I use is from MyoScience. It's called their micronized creatine monohydrate. And it's not because supplements replace the healthy habits we spoke about today. Like, that's the most important thing. Do that first. Because those morning habits create the signal. But creatine helps answer the signal more efficiently. See, the sunlight says, "Create more energy." The walk says, "Use glucose more efficiently." The protein says, "Maintain and build muscle." And creatine helps support the cellular energy needed to make all of this happen. That's why it's become a part of my morning routine. I simply take one scoop a day. This is 5 g. I put it in my water with minerals or sometimes I put it in my coffee. Takes a few seconds and then I'm done. That's it.

And the beautiful thing is this. One of the biggest predictors of staying lean as you age isn't how much cardio you do. It's the muscle mass you have cuz muscle is your metabolic engine. It's where glucose gets stored. It's where energy gets produced. And it's one of the biggest defenses we have against age-related weight gain. Which is exactly why creatine of the most researched supplements in the entire world. There are over 6,000 published studies on creatine.

Now, I want to take the next 5 hours to go over every single study with you. I'm just kidding. But the studies show it helps benefit strength, recovery, healthy aging, brain function. But not all creatine is created equal. About 90% of the creatine supplements out there comes from China and it's contaminated, chalked with fillers, and it doesn't get you the results we want here. If you want to use the exact creatine that I use and recommend to all my clients and students, then click the first link in the description box below. Or if you're watching on YouTube, grab your phone and scan the QR code on the screen. MyoScience has given my community, you, an exclusive offer to get 20% off your creatine. And honestly, I don't know how long they're going to keep this discount available. So, hopefully you see this in time.

What I love about MyoScience and this creatine is that it comes from Germany. It's their premium German Creapure creatine. Say that about five times fast. It's third-party tested, no contaminants, no fillers, no junk. And because this one is what's called micronized, it mixes easier and it's more gentle on your digestive system. One of the most common complaints when people take creatine is that they feel bloated. Well, that doesn't happen with micronized creatine. So, when you go to that link, you're going to see this here, their MyoScience micronized creatine. You can see subscribe and save, one-time purchase, add to cart. The coupon code for 20% off is automatically applied. And if you're over 40, there's one thing I personally pair this creatine with every single day. It's you can see in the bottom here, it goes perfectly with their vitamin D3 and their K2 option. Personally, I take both. See, creatine helps support the engine, vitamin D helps support many of the signals that keep that engine running naturally and efficiently. It's one of my favorite anti-aging combinations. So, it's an option, but you can just add it to the cart like I'm going to do here, and the coupon code is applied to your entire order, by the way. And the best part, every order from MyoScience is backed by their 100% money-back guarantee. So, there's really no risk. Try it for 30 days. Watch what it does to support your energy, your recovery, and your muscle. And most importantly, notice how you feel after you take it. Click the first link in the description box below or scan the QR code on the screen to get this product.

But, let me leave you with this. Look, you're not lazy. You're not broken. Your metabolism is not secretly working against you. Your body has been doing what it's designed to do. It's responding to the signals you've given it. You change the signal, you get a different response. The phone, the coffee, the absence of sunlight, the high carbs, no movement, all of this is stress on top of stress. All of those send signals to your body to store fat. Change the signal and fat loss stops feeling like a battle you keep losing.

Try this routine, at least one of the tips here for the next 7 days. Then come back and let me know how it went for you in the comment section. And if you enjoyed this lesson, I just published a video on 400 mg of a certain nutrient that lowers cortisol and helps you get quality fat-burning sleep and prevents you from getting up to pee in the middle of the night. Here's a clip from that lesson, then click the video on the screen coming up, and I'll see you in that next lesson. Because this isn't a sleep problem, it's a hormone problem. [music] So, let's fix it. You see, you have two opposing hormones, cortisol, which is a morning hormone, and melatonin, which is a night hormone. They cannot coexist. When cortisol rises, melatonin decreases. [music] Now, here's what triggers that two to three
