These tanks were designed by engineers who never knew the battlefield and who tended to excessively complicate the system. These words from Sergey Sousen well summarize the wall that the West has encountered. From 2023, the use of this armored vehicle revealed major structural and doctrinal limitations. Often described as the best armored vehicle in the world, the Leopard I found itself plunged into an environment for which it had simply not been designed. So, what really happened? Why didn't this cutting-edge equipment cause the breakthrough expected by some? To understand, we have sifted through independent reports, crew feedback, and Ifri's notes. We have traced the thread to identify the five errors concerning the Leopard 2 in Ukraine. Welcome to Calibelum. Before we discuss the five errors of the Leopard in Ukraine, it is necessary to set the stage. What we qualify here as an error does not necessarily, or even at all, refer to manufacturing defects, but rather to planning failures, structural limitations, or doctrinal disconnects that have been revealed by the massive use of the tank on the front lines. In very brief terms, the Leopard I is a German-designed tank recognized for its firepower and available in several versions, the most modern being the Leopard 2A8. To provide some context for the video, a coalition of European countries has supplied Ukraine with a total of approximately 70 units, noting that sources are very heterogeneous on this subject, so 70 is an average. Germany notably supplied units in the 2A6 version. The Ukrainian fleet is, however, also very heterogeneous, including older variants from other countries. Out of the 70 tanks received, at least 12 losses have been visually documented since the beginning of 2024. Let's get back to it. The first error is strategic in nature. It lies in the mismatch between the high technicality of the Leopard 2 and the logistical requirements of a prolonged conflict. The Leopard 2 is a complex weapons system that integrates cutting-edge electronic and optronic subsystems. Unlike Soviet-designed tanks, which are more robust and designed for basic field repairs, the Leopard does not allow for simplified maintenance on the front line. NATO doctrine relies on a specific technical support infrastructure, a logistical ecosystem that Ukraine logically could not reproduce in situ. Consequently, second and third-level repairs, which directly affect the engine block or computerized fire control systems, require the systematic transfer of armored vehicles outside the borders to logistical hubs that can be located in Poland. This rotation immobilizes the tank for long weeks, reducing the number of available tanks on the contact line. The weight of this outsourced logistics is such that it requires financial intervention from allies. The Canadian government, for example, had to release a specific envelope of 14.6 million dollars solely to support the operation of the Leopard repair center based in Poland. Added to this maintenance complexity is a critical shortage of spare parts. However, this is a structural problem linked to the lack of industrial depth in Europe, whose global tank fleet has fallen from 30,000 units in 1980 to less than 5,000 in the early 2010s. On the ground, this situation forces Ukrainian technicians to resort to cannibalization. They remove components from damaged or destroyed tanks to repair others, which mechanically reduces the overall mass of the available armored fleet. Finally, logistical difficulties begin long before the tank reaches the Ukrainian front. To maintain delivery flows, donor countries must draw from reserves that are sometimes inactive and have been for a long time. For example, Spain had to mobilize the industrialist Santa Barbara Sistemas to restore Leopard 2A4 tanks from storage, out of service since 2012, at the Casetas barracks in Zaragoza. These tanks, recovered in an advanced state of deterioration, require much heavier maintenance plans that necessitate months of refurbishment before being shipped by sea. The Leopard 2 has therefore proven to be a machine described by many as a peacetime asset, structurally difficult to support in a high-intensity war where supply chains are under extreme strain, especially for a country like Ukraine which is not originally equipped with it. The second error concerns the psychological dimension, but also the management of crews facing a tank that has been elevated to a priority target. Russian forces have indeed made the destruction of the Leopard 2, like many other NATO equipment, a tactical objective and an absolute media priority in order to break, at all costs, the persistent myth of Western technological superiority. This constant pressure has placed crews under extreme stress. Technical reports relayed by magazines such as Der Spiegel indicate that some Ukrainian personnel have simulated technical breakdowns or malfunctions to avoid being deployed in high-lethality zones, particularly minefields or sectors saturated by artillery. The fear of ending up in a vehicle that systematically attracts all enemy fire has thus eroded the initial confidence placed in this high-tech armored vehicle, in the sense that it offers high survivability. The loss of the illusion of Western armor's invincibility has therefore directly impacted the combat effectiveness of units. Furthermore, the doctrinal shift has been seen as too abrupt. Soldiers accustomed to Soviet equipment, trained in a few weeks on Western systems, would have made numerous handling errors. This is already because the technical know-how is not the same, nor is the field use and the various manipulations. Everything we have just said has therefore transformed the Leopard 2 into a source of psychological attrition due to an information war. But I will detail this point as a bonus at the end of the video. The third error is purely strategic: the absence of sufficient maneuver mass to use the tank as it was designed. The doctrine for the use of the Leopard 2 relies on concentrating forces to create a breakthrough on the front. However, Ukraine has never been able to field the necessary units for a large-scale offensive. Deliveries have been fragmented, which is explained by the diversity of European countries, and the resulting fleet has proven to be extremely heterogeneous, mixing versions such as the Leopard 2A4, 2A6, or even the Strv12. This heterogeneous fleet has fragmented crew training in the long term and complicated the management of ammunition stocks, which can be specific. As a result, instead of forming a unified force, Ukrainian commanders have used the Leopard 2 sparingly, in groups of two or three, isolating the tank from its support capability for which it was designed, making it an easier target for Russian anti-tank units, which are also equipped in a heterogeneous manner with drones or ATGMs. This tactical dilution has forced a rather radical change in use. Initially designed as an offensive weapon, the Leopard 2 has ended up being relegated to defensive tasks or used as mobile artillery, according to Ukrainian soldiers. By bombarding positions from a distance rather than breaking through lines, the Ukrainian army has implicitly admitted a failure. The failure of the breakthrough role initially attributed to its armored vehicles by some analysts, sometimes wrongly. This shift towards fire support missions shows the inability to mobilize a coherent mechanized force and the stalemate of a conflict that remains geographically extensive with a certain and evolving intensity. The Leopard 2 was designed for duels against other armored vehicles, not for facing the saturation of modern asymmetric threats. Its armor is concentrated on the frontal arc, like most tanks, leaving the turret roof and flanks vulnerable to vertical attacks. The massive use by Russia of FPV drones in Bakhmut and various loitering munitions like the Lancet has allowed the neutralization of strategically high-value tanks with formidable effectiveness. It should be noted that neutralization does not necessarily mean destruction; the tank can very well be brought back for repair or cannibalization. Furthermore, in the absence of series-produced active protection systems, Leopards have remained quite defenseless against top-attack strikes, leaving Ukrainian mechanics to test local and inexpensive solutions themselves to adapt. The geographical environment has also worked against the German armored vehicle, with a weight of about 60 tons, nearly 20 tons more than its Russian counterparts. The Leopard 2 is vulnerable to the phenomenon of "Tiernosium," which I don't really know how to pronounce. This black, clayey Ukrainian soil turns into deep mud pockets that limit traction and clog mechanical components, contributing to increased risks of engine failure and other critical components. Once immobilized by mud or a mine, according to the principle "the mine immobilizes, the artillery destroys," the tank becomes a stationary target. Ifri's analyses show that we have reached an armor ceiling. Adding metal to protect the roof would make the tank too heavy to cross existing Ukrainian infrastructure, such as bridges. But the tank is not dead yet. It tends to adapt to needs. The tank must therefore evolve to integrate active protection systems or become a loitering munition carrier to compensate for its structural vulnerabilities, which is already being considered. Finally, we must not forget that the tank is engaged outside its doctrinal framework of combined arms combat, in the sense that the tank is not supposed to operate alone but must be included in a bubble. We will not see this as an error because the role of the tank has adapted to the nature of the conflict. But it is still interesting to discuss. The difficult artillery fire support has also forced tanks to expose themselves to engage targets that artillery should have neutralized beforehand. This disconnect has made the Leopard 2 a substitute for other missing means, a mission for which it is under-efficient. Lessons from the front are now pushing for technical revision, the integration of tethered drones, drones that are said to be wire-guided and used to acquire real-time intelligence. Indeed, some needs identified too late could not be integrated into existing equipment, leaving units engaged during the 2023 counteroffensive disarmed against Russian combined arms coordination, which, although flawed at the beginning of the conflict, eventually adapted, just as the Ukrainian army did in the end. Finally, error number 5. The Leopard 2 has been exploited in the communication arena, as we said earlier. And this is an error in the sense that it has impacted European armies. The loss of image for Western manufacturers has been major. The inauguration of a museum of foreign military operations in Pyongyang in April 2026 shows this global political exploitation. The exhibition of carcasses of Leopard 2A4s, Abrams, and French armored vehicles like the AMX 10 RC serves as an argument to weaken the myth of NATO's technological superiority. For Russia and its allies, these captured materials are strategic trophies used to legitimize the idea of Western fallibility in an attrition war. Beyond the symbolism, these captures allow for in-depth analysis. We are talking about reverse engineering of targeting systems and various subsystems by defense industries, if they are not too damaged. However, this does not prevent the Leopard I from attracting a multitude of European armies, from Norway to Italy, including Croatia and Lithuania. Similarly, even if the capture of Western armored vehicles tarnishes the image of vehicles like the French MX10 RC, we must not forget that it is over 40 years old and therefore obsolete, hence its replacement by the BRC. This image war ultimately demonstrates that the destruction of equipment has a political impact that far exceeds the simple loss of a combat vector. It forces the West to rethink not only the design of its armored vehicles based on the experience gained but also the way their performance is communicated globally. In conclusion, the Leopard 2 did not fail due to a manufacturing defect, but rather due to an engagement for which it was not intended. A precision tank was asked to conduct positional warfare with drone saturation where advances are hard-won, without giving it the necessary mass or cover. This conflict marks the end of a certain vision of armored warfare. War is no longer necessarily mobile. To survive, the tank must now be rethought in terms of its architecture, its integration, and its missions on the battlefield. The Ukrainian lesson is clear, even if not new.
