The Key to UNDERSTANDING Boxing Technique | Fundamentals - EP 2

Hello skiller boxers. What if we told you that there is a principle present in absolutely all boxing techniques? Punching, head movement, footwork, and that this concept is exactly what separates good technique from bad technique in all of those areas. And that by understanding this principle, you can drastically improve your technique and the efficiency with which you learn new movements. And once you start seeing it, you begin to notice it's everywhere in boxing. You might think it sounds too good to be true.

So before teaching you how this principle works and how to apply it to your own boxing with our own personalized workout, let's first explain why weight distribution is so important in boxing.

Think of it like mathematics and other sciences. I'm sure most of you have once asked yourselves, when am I going to apply the Pythagorean theorem in my day-to-day life? Well, specific examples like that might not be directly useful in your day-to-day life. But mathematics in general is essential because it provides the foundational tools for logical reasoning and problem solving that you apply every day. And that's why you learn it. It is the universal language of science. You don't need to know biology to understand physics and you don't need to know physics to understand chemistry. But you do need mathematics to understand all of them.

Well, it's the same in the sweet science. There are countless techniques in boxing. But underneath almost all of them, the same mechanical principle is operating. Weight distribution allows you to understand the mechanics of every single technique as it is the base of every movement you will learn.

And this is where boxing starts to feel less random and much more connected.

But what exactly is weight distribution? Weight distribution is the strategic allocation of body weight between the front and back leg in order to maintain balance, generate power, and enable quick movement. Most coaches only teach this superficially when explaining how to generate power. For example, when throwing the cross, they often say to push off the back foot to generate power and transfer your weight to the front foot as you punch. However, we've noticed that this concept of weight distribution is not only present in punches, but also in footwork, defensive sequences, and most importantly in connecting all of these elements together. That is what makes people say, "Wow, that boxer moves so fluidly. He has great technique."

But before we get into more advanced mechanics, let's cover the basic weight distribution in punches. How does weight distribution work? Before understanding the concept, you need to forget another one. Punches are not thrown with the arm. You should stop seeing them that way and instead view them as movements performed with the whole body. This single shift in perspective changes how you see technique completely.

The next thing you have to understand is that punches have a starting point and an ending point and they must be loaded. It's the same concept as an arrow. To shoot it, you need to pull the arrow all the way back so the string becomes tense and then release it. This means that to throw a punch, you must position your weight in the starting point of that punch so you can fire it. You can see this clearly when boxers try to generate maximum power on punch machines. They load the punch as much as possible to generate as much force as they can.

Load up. Load up. Load up. Load up. >> Oh, that's a good one.

So in order to understand technique better, you need to know the starting point of every movement. And to understand how to combine punches or movements fluidly, you need to understand that the ending point of one movement is often the starting point of another. Once you understand this connection, combinations start making much more sense.

Starting and ending points. Let's look at the starting and ending points of the six basic punches, four defensive movements, and six main footwork movements used to take angles. Once you understand all these 16 movements, you'll be able to move fluidly in the ring. We will show you exactly how to apply this later. But first, let's understand the movements. And this is where everything begins to connect together.

We will separate the body into lead side and rear side by drawing a line through the center. When we refer to the lead side, weight is distributed more on the front foot. When we refer to the rear side, weight is distributed more on the back foot. In some cases, it can also involve body rotation or slight leaning toward that side.

Lead hand punches generally start on the lead side and end in the middle. Rear hand punches generally start on the rear side and end in the middle. For example, to load a lead hook, you transfer your weight to the lead side by rotating your body and placing more pressure on the lead hook. >> Once again, >> to load a rear hook, you do the same but towards the rear side. There are slight variations. The jab and cross include a back to front motion and uppercuts involve a down to up motion.

Now defensive movements generally start in the middle but end on the sides. Lead slip and lead roll start in the middle and end on the lead side. Rear slip and rear roll start in the middle and end on the rear side. And this is the key. If the lead roll ends on the lead side and the lead hook starts on the lead side, then the lead roll can naturally load the lead hook. Suddenly, movements that seemed separate now become mechanically connected. The pullback is slightly different as it goes from the middle to the back, which is why it connects well with punches like the cross.

Now that we are starting to understand the concept, let's continue with footwork. A lead pivot and front step shuffle start on the lead side and end on the rear side. A rear pivot and back step shuffle start on the rear side and end on the lead side. A side step to the rear side starts on the lead side and ends on the rear side. A side step to the lead side starts on the rear side and ends on the lead side. Again, we know that the cross ends in the middle, but it can also be thrown more exaggerated with the head off the center line, shifting the ending point towards the lead side. This allows you to set up angle changes more effectively.

Now that we understand the general mechanics of weight distribution, how do we apply it in real situations? >> Nice shot. >> Practical examples.

Now you will learn how weight distribution can actually help you to learn techniques better, combine movements more fluidly, anticipate punches better, set up punches more effectively. So how can we use the principles of weight distribution to learn techniques better? Let's do a test. Start in your boxing stance with weight evenly distributed. Without shifting your weight to either side, try to pivot to your lead side. Now do the same, but first perform a lead slip, then pivot. You'll notice the movement becomes much easier and more natural. The body suddenly feels like it wants to move that way naturally.

Now let's do it with a punch. From a neutral stance, throw a rear hook without shifting your weight. Now first roll to your rear side and then throw the hook. You will feel the difference immediately. And this is exactly why some punches feel effortless while others feel forced. As you can see, understanding weight distribution directly affects your technique.

Now, how can it help combine moves more fluidly? Let's look at the example of a check hook counter, which involves a defensive move and a punch. When you lean back or step back to make your opponent miss, your weight shifts to the back foot. However, to throw a hook, we know that you must rotate toward the lead side and shift your weight to that side. Otherwise, when you throw the hook just leading back, it will have no power. So to counter properly, you need to step or lean back while also preparing the rotation toward the lead side. Once you understand this, you will also realize it can expose you. So the solution is to cover up during the motion. This way you evade the punch while loading your counter. >> As you can see, understanding weight distribution has allowed you to build a much more complete and effective counter. Not just a movement, but an entire sequence working together.

So far so good. But how can we use it to predict punches better? And how can it help to set up punches better? By understanding starting and ending points, you can begin to predict behavior. If your opponent slips outside your jab, his rear hand is loaded. If he bends at the waist while backing up, he is likely preparing a rear side pivot. If he slips to the lead side, he will often return with a lead hook, but not always. And this is where boxing starts becoming a game of reading intentions before the punch is even thrown. Important. Slipping to the lead side does not mean you can only punch with the lead hand. It simply means your lead side is loaded. So, your most powerful shot will usually come from there. You can still punch with the rear hand, but it won't be fully loaded. These are often called waist punches. And understanding them opens a new layer of deception in boxing. In this situation, a fighter may have his weight on the lead side and his lead hook loaded, but he throws a rear hand waist punch first to disguise the real attack. And once you understand waist punches, you start seeing setups completely differently. But we'll discuss this concept in our next video.

Now the question is, how do we apply all of this in day-to-day training to truly internalize it? How to train weight distribution? If you want to fully understand weight distribution, you need to take it to the extreme.

Technical push up. There you go. Now, not just >> Come on, baby. >> Come on. Now, >> in your training, whether shadow boxing or on the bag, you can dedicate specific rounds or moments where you exaggerate these mechanics on purpose. This means consciously loading the starting point of every movement, shifting your weight clearly to the lead or rear side, rotating fully, and being very deliberate with every transition. Just like you would dedicate time to keeping your chin tucked, your eyes forward, or your feet positioned correctly without crossing them, weight distribution is a fundamental pillar of boxing technique. And like any fundamental, it needs focused practice to be properly internalized. When you exaggerate the movement, you are not fighting normally. You are training your body to understand where each movement begins and where it ends. This is what builds true technical awareness. And over time, these mechanics stop feeling forced and start becoming automatic. This is what creates real understanding of mechanics.

But how about internalizing fluid transition between moves? Like we explained, this is where weight distribution becomes even more powerful because it allows you to create natural chains of movement where one action becomes the preparation for the next. To develop that fluid boxing style where everything flows and connects, you should train structured sequences of punches, defensive movements, and footwork that continuously feed into each other. For example, combining punches with head movements. Jab, cross, rear slip, cross, jab, lead slip, jab, cross, rear slip, and so on. This is exactly the type of work that develops that smooth, effortless style you see in high-level boxers where every movement naturally leads into the next.

Not every punch is meant to be fully loaded and not every punch is meant to be powerful. There are moments where punches are used for a completely different purpose, just to manipulate position, timing, and reactions.
