Of all the human species that ever walked this earth, and there were several, the one that fascinates us most is the Neanderthal. And it makes sense. They're the closest thing we ever had to a sibling. So close that some scientists call them our sister species. And so close that if you're of European or Asian descent, there's a fragment of them still inside you right now, written into your DNA.
But here's the thing people get wrong about Neanderthals. We picture them as the dim, hunched cavemen from the old textbook cartoons. The evolutionary runner-up, the also-ran. And that picture is not just unkind, it's flat wrong. Because when you actually look at the biology of these people, the bones, the lungs, the brains, what you find is something closer to a superhuman. A creature so robust, so powerful, so finely tuned for a brutal world that if one walked among us today, we genuinely wouldn't know what to make of it. So let me introduce you properly. These were the Neanderthals, and they were absolute freaks of nature.
They lived across Eurasia somewhere between 400,000 and 40,000 years ago. And the world they lived in was not a gentle one. This was the Ice Age. A landscape stalked by woolly mammoths, woolly rhinos, cave bears, cave lions, and cold that could kill you in an afternoon. And the Neanderthal didn't just endure that world, it was built for it.
Now, from a distance, you might not clock the difference at first. The most obvious one would be height, because Neanderthals were, on average, a bit shorter than us, by around 5 and 1/2 inches compared to people today. The tallest one we've ever found, a specimen called Amud 1, stood about 5 ft 10. Doesn't sound like much, but here's the catch. Compared to the humans living in Europe 20,000 years ago, Neanderthals were right there with them, maybe even a touch taller. So, short is relative. Against the people of their own era, they weren't small at all. And anyway, height is the least of it.
Because despite being shorter, the Neanderthal was significantly heavier than us. A male averaging around 180 lb, roughly 20% more than a modern man of the same height. And that weight wasn't fat, it was frame. The Neanderthal skeleton was a different piece of engineering altogether, denser, thicker, more compact, with nearly every single bone heavier than its human equivalent, sometimes approaching twice the density. The shoulders, the chest, the upper arms, the thigh bones, even the kneecaps, all of it reinforced. This was a body built like a tank, and the consensus is clear, they were far stronger than we are.
Why? Because of how they hunted. Neanderthals didn't pick off prey from a safe distance with bows. They got in close, terrifyingly close, driving heavy thrusting spears into animals like horses, rhinos, and full-grown mammoths the size of African elephants. That's a hunting style that demands raw power and rewards a heavy, anchored, muscular frame. And the bones show it. The arm bones in particular carry these rough, enlarged ridges where enormous muscles once attached, the kind of markings you only get from a lifetime of violent, repetitive force.
Now, that lifelong spear use may be behind one of their most striking features, those thick, powerful, almost Popeye-like forearms. And some researchers think the muscle didn't stop at exercise. There's a theory that Neanderthals ran naturally high levels of certain hormones, adding even more to their already considerable mass. I want to be careful here because some of the wilder strength claims you'll see online, that they could casually bench 500 lb, are speculation built on top of speculation. We can't actually measure a fossil's bench press. But what we can say from the sheer architecture of those bones is that the strongest Neanderthals could likely shift loads that would put elite modern athletes to shame. One estimate suggests they could haul 50 lb of meat for nearly 30 miles. That's not a workout. That's a Tuesday.
And the robustness bought them more than strength. It bought them durability, which they needed because Neanderthal life was savage. A systematic survey of Neanderthal skeletons found that somewhere between 79 and 94% of them showed signs of serious, fully healed trauma. Healed, [snorts] meaning they survived it. We're talking blunt force fractures, broken bones, even amputations. There's one famous individual, an older male, who in his lifetime lost the use of his right arm, was struck in the face hard enough to blind one eye, and had his ear canals so damaged by repeated injury that he likely went deaf in both ears. And he kept living. The community kept him alive.
Where did all that damage come from? A brutal cocktail. The up-close hunting, conflict with other Neanderthals, and animal attacks. And that last one has a twist. One study found that a large share of Neanderthals carried evidence of violent encounters with big animals, big cats, wolves, bears. But here's the hard core part. Scientists don't think those were the animals hunting the Neanderthals. They think it was the other way around. Those were defensive wounds from animals fighting back while the Neanderthals attacked them. Sit with that for a second. These people were picking fights with cave bears.
And the body just keeps revealing more. Crack one open, figuratively, and the inside is as strange as the outside. Start with the chest. The Neanderthal had a barrel ribcage, wide and deep, housing a set of lungs around 20% larger than ours on average. And the exceptional ones blow that out of the water. A male called Kebara 2 had an estimated lung volume of around 9 L, roughly 40% more than the average modern man. To put that in perspective, until recently the biggest lung capacity ever recorded in a human athlete was about 8 and 1/2 L. This This prehistoric man beat our record holders without trying.
And feeding those lungs was that famous nose, long, wide, and often mocked, but it was a precision instrument. It moved air dramatically faster than ours and warmed and humidified the freezing bone-dry ice age air on the way in. All of this, the lungs, the nose, the engine room, was built to fuel a heavy, hard-working, cold-climate body that simply burned more energy than we do. The estimates run between 4,500 and 6,700 calories a day. If Neanderthals were still around, your cereal box would need a second nutrition label.
Now, you'd assume all that lung power made them incredible long-distance runners, chasing prey to exhaustion the way modern humans can. But no. And this is one of my favorite details. Neanderthals were actually poor endurance athletes. They were built for the opposite. Explosive bursts. Their leg bones were short, their toes long and wide for a powerful push-off. Their Achilles tendons long and narrow. Bad for storing energy over distance, great for a sudden launch. And the real proof was hidden in the muscle itself. Like us, they had a mix of fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fiber. But they carried a far higher concentration of the fast-twitch kind, the explosive kind. Everything about them was tuned for a short, devastating sprint to close the gap on prey. So, if a Neanderthal ever does come back and challenges you to a foot race, make it a marathon. It's your only chance.
And here's where we really have to throw out the old cartoon. Because all that brawn came packaged with an enormous amount of brain. The Neanderthal braincase averaged around 1,640 cubic centimeters in males, about 30% larger than the modern human average. Now, size isn't everything when it comes to intelligence. Their brains were shaped differently than ours, devoting more real estate to vision and other senses. But the old idea that they were dumb brutes is dead. We now know Neanderthals coordinated complex hunts, crafted tools, made art, cared tenderly for their sick and injured, and almost certainly spoke.
A big chunk of that brain, by the way, may have been dedicated to those huge eyes. Their eye sockets suggest eyes around 15% larger than ours, which would have given them sharper sight and far better night vision in their dim northern world. Even their face was a tool. That heavy jaw and those big teeth were long assumed to mean a crushing bite. But the studies actually landed somewhere surprising. Their bite force was roughly the same as ours, maybe even a touch weaker. So, why the huge mouth? The leading idea is wonderful. They used their front teeth as a third hand, gripping hide, meat, and tools in their jaws to free up both hands for work. And the evidence backs it. Their front teeth show distinctive wear and scratch patterns that don't come from chewing, found in Neanderthals and basically nowhere else. They were biting and pulling and holding with their teeth constantly. Which makes sense for a hypercarnivore, and they were exactly that, with isotope analysis showing roughly 70% of their massive calorie intake came from meat alone.
So, now you might be wondering, if you're one of the millions carrying Neanderthal DNA, does any of this apply to you? Super strength? A primal craving for steak? And the honest answer is mostly no. Most studies find their DNA only nudges things like physical appearance subtly. There's a growing body of research suggesting it affects our internal workings, immune responses, and the like more than we realized, but those studies often contradict each other, and there's real disagreement about how much it all matters. But on one point, there's no disagreement at all. These were not failed humans. They were a magnificent superhuman branch of our family, built for a world that would have destroyed us, and built astonishingly well. The freaks of nature, it turns out, were us all along.
