Number 10, hand crank. Before cars had a start button, they had a hand crank. A literal metal rod you'd stick into the front of the car and spin like a giant angry mechanical toy. If the engine backfired while you were cranking, the rod would violently spin backwards at full force into your hand, your wrist, your forearm, whatever was in the way. This wasn't a rare accident. This was just a normal risk of driving in the early 1900s. The inventor of the electric starter, Charles Ketering, was motivated to create it after his friend got his jaw broken by a hand crank. His friend died from the complications. So, the electric starter wasn't just a convenience upgrade. It was a please stop breaking people's faces upgrade.

Number nine, home canning. Before grocery stores, if you didn't preserve your own food, you didn't eat in winter. Home canning was basic survival knowledge. Now, that skill is mostly gone, and that ignorance has a body count. You take fresh food, seal it in a jar, and heat it to kill bacteria. If done right, it lasts for years. But if done wrong, you've created a glass container of one of the most deadly toxins on Earth. Botulism. There's no smell or color change. The food looks fine. You take a bite and the toxin starts shutting down your nervous system. A single gram could theoretically kill 1 million people. Scientists use a version of this toxin in medicine. You know it as Botox. The rules for safe canning are specific. Low acid foods like vegetables and meat need a pressure caner that reaches 240° F. A regular boiling water bath only hits 212. That 28° difference is the gap between dinner and a funeral. The problem is old family recipes often skip this. Grandma's canned corn recipe from 1952 might be a death trap. Not because she was careless, but because the science wasn't fully understood. The USDA later tested hundreds of these old recipes and found many were unsafe. Widespread knowledge of safe canning disappeared when home economics classes were cut from schools.

Number eight, shorthand. Before keyboards, there were people who could write as fast as you talk. Not close to as fast as fast. Word for word, keeping up with a live conversation, a courtroom, a speech. They called it shorthand. And it was everywhere. Every office, courtroom, and newsroom relied on it. If you wanted a secretarial job in the 1950s and didn't know shorthand, you didn't get the job. Shorthand is a system of symbols. Instead of letters, you draw tiny curves, dots, and lines representing sounds. A full sentence could be just a few penstrokes. The most popular version, Gregg Shorthand, looked like someone put the alphabet in a blender. It's unreadable to anyone who doesn't know the system, which now is almost everyone. Historians are sitting on mountains of old documents, diaries, and interview transcripts written entirely in shorthand, and nobody can read them. Court records from the 1800s, personal letters, journalist notes from the biggest moments in history just sitting there locked because the people who could read them are gone. Charles Dickens used it as a court reporter. Some of his notes are still being decoded. Organizations are now racing to find the last remaining shorthand experts before they die. Not to bring the skill back, but just to translate what's already been written. It's a rescue mission for dead documents, and the clock is running out.

Number seven, celestial navigation. For most of human history, if you wanted to know where you were, you looked up at the sky. Sailors crossed oceans using nothing but stars, a clock, and some math. No satellites, no signal bars, no recalculating. The North Star, Polaris, sits almost perfectly above the North Pole. The angle of Polaris above the horizon gives you your latitude, how far north or south you are. Longitude, how far east or west you are, requires knowing the exact time. The Earth rotates 15° per hour. By comparing the sun's time where you are to the time on an accurate clock from home, you find your longitude. This is why a good clock was the GPS of the 1700s. Sailors used a sextant to measure the precise angle of a star, then did the math with complex tables and trigonometry. Polynesian navigators took this further, crossing the Pacific in canoes with no instruments at all. They read stars, but also ocean swells, wind direction, and the flight patterns of birds. They held a mental map of the entire Pacific passed down through generations. They found tiny islands in an ocean that covers a third of the planet in a canoe. Meanwhile, most of us today can't find our way out of a parking garage without a phone.

Number six, sharpening knives. Most kitchen knives are so dull they couldn't cut warm butter. And yet, people try to slice tomatoes with them, not cutting them, just slowly murdering them with a blunt piece of metal. 100 years ago, every household knew how to sharpen a knife. A sharp knife is safer than a dull one. A dull knife requires more force, which means less control. When it slips, you're explaining to an ER doctor how a tomato beat you. People used a wet stone, a flat rectangular rock. You wet the stone, hold the blade at a 20° angle, and drag it across. The stone removes tiny bits of metal, creating a new sharp edge. The other tool is the honing rod, that long metal stick in knife sets that most people ignore. A honing rod doesn't sharpen. It realigns the microscopic edge of the blade that gets bent from use. A wet stone creates a new edge. A honing rod maintains it. The basic skill takes 10 minutes to learn, but now people spend $40 on electric sharpeners that do a mediocre job or buy a new knife set when all they needed was a $5 stone.

Number five, mental math tricks. Your bill at a restaurant is $47. How much is a 15% tip? If your first instinct was to grab your phone, listen up, because 60 years ago, a sixth grader could solve that in their head in approximately 4 seconds. Here's how. To find 15%, first find 10%. Just move the decimal point one spot left. $47 becomes $4.70. Now find half of that. Half of $4.70 is $2.35. Add them together. $4.70 plus $2.35 is $7.05. Done faster than unlocking your phone. This was just how kids were taught to see numbers. To multiply 47 by 5, you don't. You divide 47 by two and multiply by 10. That's 235. Because multiplying by 5 is the same as multiplying by 10 and cutting it in half. When calculators arrived, we decided humans didn't need the skill. But your brain is always with you. People good at mental math don't just tip faster. They catch mistakes. They notice when a price is wrong. They understand numbers instead of just reading them.

Number four, timber framing. Somewhere in Europe, there's a barn that's been standing since the 1400s. No nails, no screws, no metal, just wood cut and shaped to lock into itself like a giant 3D puzzle. That barn has survived 600 years of weather. Meanwhile, the average house built today starts falling apart in 30. Timber framing is the art of building with joinery. The main joint is the mortise and tenon. A peg on one beam fits into a hole on another locked with a wooden pin. That connection can hold thousands of pounds. These buildings last because wood moves. It expands and contracts with moisture and temperature. A timber frame joint allows that movement, flexing like a tree in the wind instead of snapping. Modern construction nails everything rigid, which works until it doesn't. The knowledge didn't disappear because it stopped working. It disappeared because nails got cheap. Speed over strength. Today, a genuine timber framer is a rare specialist. It used to be a skill every village carpenter had.

Number three, soap making. That bar of soap in your bathroom was made by mixing fat with one of the most corrosive chemicals known. Lye. Sodium hydroxide. The same stuff that dissolves organic tissue. And 200 years ago, people made it in their backyards. You'd save cooking fat for weeks. Bacon grease, beef tallow. Then you'd make lye by pouring water through wood ash. The resulting liquid could burn straight through skin. Then you'd mix the fat and lye. A chemical reaction called saponification transforms the corrosive lye and greasy fat into something entirely new. Soap. The ancient Babylonians were making soap around 2,800 BC. They just knew fat plus ash water equals clean. If every soap factory on Earth shut down tomorrow, most people would have no idea what to do. The skill was passed down like a recipe. People knew how to test the lye's strength by floating an egg in it. If the egg floated just right, showing a coin-sized patch above the surface. The lye was ready.

Number two, basic logic. Schools used to teach you how to spot a bad argument. Not just a gut feeling, but structured thinking. Here's a classic. "My grandfather smoked his whole life and lived to 95, so smoking can't be that bad." This is an anecdote. One person's luck doesn't cancel out data from millions of others. It's like saying, "I drove drunk once and got home fine, so it must be safe." You just got lucky. Another one. "Everyone believes it, so it must be true." Millions of people believed the earth was flat. They were still wrong. The number of believers has nothing to do with truth. Here's one that works every day. "If you don't support this policy, you must want the country to fail." That's a false choice. Most things aren't either/or. There's almost always a middle ground no one is talking about. These bad arguments are everywhere in ads, politics, your group chat. Without a framework to spot them, you absorb them. You start believing things not because they're true, but because they were packaged well. Logic isn't about being the smartest person in the room. It's about not being the most fooled person in the room.

Number one, oral storytelling. Before TV, movies, and the internet, the most entertaining person in any room was the one who could tell a good story, not read one, tell one from memory, with their voice, their hands, their face. A skilled storyteller wasn't just popular. They were a celebrity. People would travel for miles and sit for hours, hanging on every word. West African griots were professional storytellers who memorized entire family histories going back centuries. They were the living libraries of their communities. When Agrio died, it was said a library had burned down. And oral storytelling isn't just entertainment. It's how humans are wired to learn. Studies show people remember information up to 22 times better when it's delivered as a story instead of a list of facts. 22 times. We traded this skill for a convenience. Writing became cheap, then printing, then screens. Now most people can't hold a room for 5 minutes without pulling out a phone. The average person struggles to tell a story without saying "um," losing the plot, or giving up and saying, "you had to be there." "You had to be there." The saddest four words in the English language. A good storyteller never needs you to have been there. They bring you there.
