Hi, you're a human. You have a brain. And that brain is lying to you right now. It's lying about what you saw 5 minutes ago. It's lying about why you made that decision yesterday. It's lying about who you are as a person. And the craziest part, you believe every word of it.

Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. It's basically the instruction manual for being human that nobody gave you. And today, we're going to speedrun the entire thing. This is everything we know about why you think, feel, and act the way you do. Buckle up.

The brain basics. Let's start with the hardware. Your brain has about 86 billion neurons. These are cells that send electrical signals to each other. When you think, feel, or move, neurons are firing. Right now, reading this, millions of them are lighting up like a Christmas tree having a seizure.

Neurons communicate through synapses, tiny gaps where they pass chemical messages called neurotransmitters. You've heard of some of these. Dopamine is the one everyone thinks is about pleasure, but it's actually about wanting and motivation. Serotonin helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite. Cortisol is your stress hormone, useful in emergencies, but destructive when it's always elevated. Adrenaline kicks in when you're about to fight someone or run away from a bear. GABA calms everything down. Glutamate speeds everything up. These chemicals basically run your life. Too much of one, not enough of another, and suddenly you're anxious, depressed, manic, or convinced that everyone is looking at you weird. Mental health is partly brain chemistry, which is why medication sometimes helps.

Your brain also has specialized regions. The prefrontal cortex, right behind your forehead, handles planning, decision-making, and impulse control. It's the last part to fully develop, which is why teenagers do stupid things. It's not fully online until about age 25. The amygdala processes fear and emotional memory. The hippocampus handles forming new memories, which is why damage to it causes amnesia. The brainstem controls basic survival functions like breathing and heart rate. You're not consciously running these systems. They run you.

Now, here's the uncomfortable part. Your brain has two main modes, conscious and unconscious. The conscious mind is the part you think is you. It's the voice in your head reading this right now. It likes to think it's in charge. It's not. About 95% of what you do is automatic. Your unconscious mind handles breathing, digestion, walking, and most of your decisions. The conscious mind is more like a press secretary that makes up reasons for what the unconscious already decided. You chose that job, that partner, that sandwich, and then your brain invented a logical story to explain why. Studies show that brain activity predicting a decision happens several seconds before you consciously decide. The feeling of choosing might be an illusion. This is going to be a theme.

How you develop. Let's talk about how you became you. There's this old debate called nature versus nurture. Are you the product of your genes or your environment? The answer is yes. It's both. Always both. Your genes load the gun, your environment pulls the trigger. You might be genetically predisposed to anxiety, but whether it actually develops depends on your childhood, your trauma, your stress levels, and whether your parents were emotionally available or just physically present.

Speaking of parents, let's talk about attachment. In the first few years of life, you form an attachment style with your primary caregiver. This blueprint affects every relationship you'll ever have. Secure attachment means your caregiver was consistent and responsive. When you cried, they came. When you needed comfort, they provided it. You grew up feeling safe, trusting that people will be there for you. You can handle intimacy without freaking out. Congratulations, you won the childhood lottery.

Anxious attachment means your caregiver was inconsistent. Sometimes they were there, sometimes they weren't. You could never predict which version you'd get. Now you crave closeness, but constantly fear abandonment. You're the one sending you okay text when someone takes too long to reply. You read into everything. Silence feels like rejection.

Avoidant attachment means your caregiver was emotionally unavailable. Maybe they were physically present, but checked out. You learn to self-soothe because no one else was going to. Now you're uncomfortable with intimacy and keep people at arm's length. You pride yourself on not needing anyone. You're the one who leaves before things get too serious.

There's also disorganized attachment, which happens with abuse or neglect. The person who's supposed to protect you is also the source of danger. You want closeness and fear at the same time. This one's the hardest to untangle.

Here's what matters, though. These are patterns, not destiny. Neuroplasticity means your brain can change at any age. New experiences create new neural pathways. Therapy works because it literally rewires your brain. The patterns you learned as a kid are strong, but they're not permanent. You are not doomed to repeat your childhood forever. Probably.

Perception and senses. Here's something that'll mess with you. You don't experience reality, you experience a simulation of reality constructed by your brain. Light hits your eyes, sound waves hit your ears, chemicals hit your tongue and nose, pressure hits your skin, and your brain takes all that raw data and builds a model of the world. But, it's not a recording. It's an interpretation. Your brain is constantly guessing, filling in gaps, predicting what comes next, and making assumptions based on past experience.

You have a blind spot in each eye where the optic nerve connects. You don't see black holes in your vision because your brain fills them in. It's making up visual information and seamlessly blending it with the real data. Optical illusions prove this. Your brain sees two lines and guesses one is longer based on context cues. It sees a dress and guesses it's blue in shadow or golden sunlight, or both simultaneously, which started a civil war on the internet that I'm still not over.

Your brain also filters information ruthlessly. Right now, you're ignoring the feeling of your clothes on your skin, the ambient sounds around you, the slight pressure of sitting. You weren't paying attention to any of that until I mentioned it. Your brain decided it wasn't relevant and screened it out. That's selective attention.

There's a famous experiment called the invisible gorilla. People watch a video of others passing a basketball. They're told to count the passes. Halfway through, a person in a gorilla suit walks through the scene, beats their chest, and leaves. About half the people don't see the gorilla at all. They were so focused on counting that their brain filtered out a literal gorilla. This is why eyewitness testimony is unreliable. Your brain doesn't record events like a camera. It constructs memories based on attention, expectation, and whatever narrative makes sense at the time. And it does this with complete confidence, even when it's completely wrong. People have gone to prison based on eyewitness testimony that was later proven false by DNA evidence.

Memory. Speaking of memory, let's talk about how it actually works. Spoiler, badly. You have different memory systems. Sensory memory holds information for milliseconds like the afterimage when you close your eyes. Short-term memory holds about seven items for about 20 seconds. It's like RAM in a computer. Long-term memory is more like a hard drive. Vast storage for facts, experiences, and skills. Stuff gets encoded from short-term to long-term through repetition, emotional intensity, or connecting it to things you already know. That's why studying works better when you relate new information to existing knowledge. That's why traumatic memories are so sticky.

But here's the thing. Every time you remember something, you're not playing back a recording. You're reconstructing the memory from scratch using fragments stored across different brain regions. And every reconstruction changes it slightly. The act of remembering alters the memory. Memories are like a game of telephone you play with yourself over years.

You forget things for two main reasons. Decay means the memory fades over time if you don't access it. Interference means new information overwrites old information or old information blocks new stuff from sticking. This is why cramming doesn't work for long-term retention.

False memories are terrifyingly easy to create. Researchers have convinced people they got lost in a mall as a child, that they met Bugs Bunny at Disneyland, which is impossible because Bugs Bunny is a Warner Brothers character, that they committed crimes they never committed. All it takes is suggestion, repetition, and imagination. Your brain can't reliably distinguish between a real memory and a vivid false one. The feeling of certainty means nothing.

Traumatic memory works differently. Stress hormones during trauma enhance memory consolidation. That's why you remember where you were during major events, but can't remember what you had for lunch last Tuesday. But trauma memories can also get fragmented causing flashbacks instead of ordered narratives. Want to actually remember things? Space your practice over time instead of cramming. Test yourself instead of just rereading. Sleep, because your brain consolidates memories during sleep. Pull an all-nighter before a test and you're basically sabotaging yourself.

Learning and conditioning. Every behavior you have was learned somehow. Psychology has identified a few main ways this happens. Classical conditioning is Pavlov's dog. Ivan Pavlov was studying digestion when he noticed his dog started salivating before food arrived, just from hearing the footsteps. So, he rang a bell before feeding the dogs. Eventually, the dogs salivated just from hearing the bell even without food. They associated the bell with the food. This happens to you constantly. The sound of your phone notification triggers a little dopamine anticipation because you've associated it with messages. The smell of a certain perfume makes you think of an ex. A song brings back a specific memory. This is also how phobias develop. One bad experience with a dog and suddenly all dogs trigger fear.

Operant conditioning is about consequences. Behavior that gets rewarded increases. Behavior that gets punished decreases. B.F. Skinner put rats in boxes with levers. Press the lever, get food. The rats pressed the lever a lot, but timing matters. Immediate rewards work better than delayed ones, which is why it's so hard to diet or save money. The pleasure of eating now beats the distant benefit of being healthy later. Variable rewards, where you don't know when you'll get rewarded, are the most addictive. That's slot machines. That's social media feeds. Maybe this scroll will have something good. Maybe the next one. Maybe the next one. The unpredictability keeps you hooked.

Habits form when behaviors become automatic. You do something, you get a reward, and eventually your brain creates a neural shortcut. The basal ganglia takes over so you don't have to consciously think about it. That's why you can drive home on autopilot. It's also why bad habits are so hard to break. The neural pathway is already paved. Willpower is trying to override an automatic process, which is exhausting. To break a habit, you need to identify the cue that triggers it. Replace the routine with a different behavior and keep the reward. Want to stop stress eating? Notice when you reach for snacks, the cue is stress. Replace eating with something else that provides comfort and repeat until the new pathway is stronger than the old one.

Observational learning is copying others. Albert Bandura showed this with the Bobo doll experiment. Kids watched adults beat up an inflatable clown doll, then did the same thing when left alone with it. We learn aggression, kindness, skills, and fears by watching other people. This is why your parents' behavior shaped you more than their lectures.

Emotions. You feel things. Sometimes too much, sometimes not enough, sometimes about the wrong things at the wrong times. Let's talk about why. Most researchers agree on about six basic emotions that appear across all cultures: fear, anger, joy, sadness, disgust, and surprise. Babies display them before they learn language. They're probably hardwired, the product of evolution. Fear keeps you alive, anger protects your boundaries, disgust keeps you from eating poison, joy reinforces good things.

An emotion is a quick, automatic, physiological response. You see a snake, you feel fear. It happens in milliseconds, before you even consciously process what you're seeing. A feeling is your conscious interpretation of that emotion. A mood is a longer-lasting state that doesn't need a specific trigger. You can be in an irritable mood all day without knowing why.

The amygdala is your brain's alarm system. It triggers fight or flight before your rational prefrontal cortex even knows what's happening. This is great for escaping predators. It's less great when your amygdala decides a work email is a predator and floods you with cortisol. The amygdala doesn't know it's 2026. It's still looking for tigers.

Some people are better at emotional regulation than others. This is partly temperament. You're born more or less reactive, and partly learned. If your caregivers helped you process emotions as a kid, you probably have better skills. If they told you to stop crying, you probably struggle more. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions, both yours and other people's. It predicts success better than IQ in many domains, especially leadership in relationships. You can be brilliant and still ruin every relationship because you don't know how to handle feelings.

Motivation and needs. Why you do anything? Motivation, Abraham Maslow said humans have a hierarchy of needs. At the bottom, physiological needs like food, water, shelter, then safety, then love and belonging, then esteem. Finally, self-actualization, becoming your best self. The idea is you can't focus on higher needs until lower ones are met. Hard to worry about self-actualization when you're starving. This framework is simplified, more a useful model than a proven theory, but it captures something real.

Motivation comes in two flavors. Extrinsic motivation is doing things for external rewards, money, grades, praise. Intrinsic motivation is doing things because they're inherently satisfying. Research consistently shows intrinsic motivation is more powerful and sustainable.

Now, dopamine. Everyone says dopamine is the pleasure chemical. This is wrong. Dopamine is about wanting, not liking. It's the anticipation of reward, not the enjoyment of it. It drives you to pursue things. Once you get them, a different system handles the pleasure. This is why scrolling social media feels compulsive but not satisfying. Dopamine is screaming more, more, more, while you feel empty. Each scroll triggers anticipation, the reward rarely matches it. So, you keep scrolling chasing a payoff that never quite arrives.

Willpower is real but limited. Self-control depletes over the course of the day. That's why you make bad choices at night. That's why diets fail after a stressful day. Willpower is a muscle that gets tired. Here's a paradox. Too much reward can kill motivation. If you pay someone for something they already enjoyed doing for free, they might enjoy it less afterward. The extrinsic reward crowds out the intrinsic motivation.

Personality. Personality is your consistent patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving across situations and over time. It's what makes you recognizably you. The most scientifically supported model is the big five, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Everyone falls somewhere on each spectrum. There's no good or bad personality, just different profiles with different tradeoffs. High conscientiousness predicts career success but also rigidity. High agreeableness makes you likable but maybe a pushover.

Where does personality come from? About 50% genetics, 50% environment roughly speaking. Identical twins raised apart have strikingly similar personalities, but your experiences also shape you. Birth order, culture, major life events, even random chance plays a role. Personality can change over time, especially during your 20s when the brain is still developing. People generally become more conscientious, more agreeable, and less neurotic as they age. This is called personality maturation. You probably won't be exactly who you are now in 10 years. That's either terrifying or liberating, depending on how you feel about who you are now.

When personality traits become extreme and cause significant problems, we call them personality disorders. Narcissistic, borderline, antisocial, these aren't just being a lot. They seriously damage lives and relationships. A note on personality tests. The Big Five has scientific support. It's reliable and valid. Myers-Briggs does not. MBTI is basically astrology for people who think they're too smart for astrology.

Social psychology. You are not an isolated individual making rational choices in a vacuum. You're a social animal constantly influenced by other people. Solomon Asch ran a famous conformity experiment in the 1950s. Participants sat in a room with others who were secretly confederates, actors working with the researcher. They looked at lines and said which one matched the target line. Easy task, obvious answer. But when all the confederates gave the wrong answer, about 75% of participants conformed at least once. They denied what their own eyes told them just to fit in with the group. Why? Some genuinely doubted their perception. If everyone else sees something different, maybe I'm wrong. Others knew they were right but didn't want to stand out. Social pressure is that powerful.

Stanley Milgram's obedience experiment was darker. Participants thought they were administering electric shocks to a learner. About 65% went all the way to the maximum 450 volts, even while visibly distressed, sweating, trembling. When the experimenter calmly insisted they continue, most people obeyed. Authority is that powerful. This experiment was inspired by trying to understand how ordinary Germans participated in the Holocaust.

The bystander effect says the more people present during an emergency, the less likely anyone helps. Everyone assumes someone else will. If you ever need help in a crowd, point at one specific person and say, "You in the red shirt, call 911." Everyone nods along, dissent is suppressed, and they make terrible decisions together. The Bay of Pigs invasion, the Challenger disaster, many failures follow this pattern.

We divide the world into in groups and out groups automatically. People in your group are individuals with complex inner lives. People outside are stereotypes. This is the foundation of prejudice. Your brain categorizes people instantly based on appearance, and those categories come loaded with associations and assumptions you didn't consciously choose. First impressions happen in milliseconds and are remarkably hard to change. A halo effect means if we like one thing about someone, attractive, competent, similar to us, we assume other good things. Attractive people are assumed to be smarter, kinder, and more trustworthy. Studies show they even get lighter prison sentences.

Cognitive biases, your brain is not a logic machine, it's a shortcut machine. And shortcuts come with systematic errors. Confirmation bias is the big one. You seek out information confirming what you already believe and dismiss information that challenges it. You evaluate evidence like a lawyer defending your existing position. You're not objective. Neither am I. Neither is anyone.

Availability heuristic means you judge likelihood by how easily examples come to mind. Shark attacks seem common because they're dramatic. You're more likely to be killed by a cow than a shark. But cow attacks don't make the news. Anchoring means the first number you hear affects all subsequent judgments. If I say a car costs $50,000, then tell you it's on sale for $35,000, you feel like you're getting a deal. Salespeople know this.

The Dunning-Kruger effect says people with low ability overestimate themselves, while people with high ability underestimate. Beginners are overconfident, experts are humble. Sunk cost fallacy is continuing something because you've already invested, even when quitting would be smarter. You stay in a bad relationship because you've already given it 3 years. The investment is gone regardless, but your brain can't let go. Loss aversion means losses hurt roughly twice as much as equivalent gains feel good. Losing $20 feels worse than finding $20 feels good. There are over 180 documented cognitive biases. The scariest part, knowing about biases doesn't make you immune to them.

Mental health. Let's talk about when things go wrong. About half of people will experience a mental health condition at some point. This is not rare. This is the human condition. Anxiety disorders are fear responses that won't shut off. Generalized anxiety is constant worry about everything. Panic disorder involves sudden attacks so severe people think they're having heart attacks. Social anxiety is fear of judgment. Specific phobias are irrational fears of particular things. About 30% of people will have an anxiety disorder at some point.

Depression isn't just sadness, it's anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure in things you used to enjoy. Persistent feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, exhaustion. It's not laziness or weakness, it's a brain state involving changes in neurotransmitters and brain structure. PTSD happens when trauma gets stuck. The brain keeps reliving the event through triggers and flashbacks. It's not about being weak, it's about the brain's normal response to abnormal events.

Other conditions. OCD involves intrusive thoughts plus compulsive behaviors to neutralize anxiety. ADHD is attention dysregulation. The brain struggles to control where focus goes. Bipolar disorder involves cycles between depression and mania. Schizophrenia involves psychosis, breaks from shared reality.

Here's the important thing. Mental health exists on a spectrum. Everyone experiences anxiety sometimes. Everyone feels depressed occasionally. Disorders are when these become persistent, severe, and significantly impair functioning. Treatment works. Therapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy, changes thinking patterns and behaviors and has has effects even after treatment ends. Medication adjust brain chemistry and can be life-saving. Often the combination works best. The stigma around mental health has killed more people than the disorders themselves by keeping people from seeking help. Getting treatment is not weakness. It's maintenance for the most complex organ in your body.

So what have we learned? You're not as rational as you think. Your brain lies, cheats, and takes shortcuts constantly. You don't perceive reality directly. You perceive a constructed model that's often wrong. Your memories are unreliable reconstructions. Your decisions are influenced by unconscious forces. You're vulnerable to social pressure, cognitive biases, and emotional hijacking. Your personality was shaped by genes and experiences you didn't choose. Your attachment patterns echo through every relationship. Your habits run on autopilot while your conscious mind makes up stories about being in control.

But knowing this is power. Understanding psychology means understanding yourself. It means recognizing when your brain is tricking you. It means catching cognitive biases before they ruin your judgment. It means having compassion for yourself and others because we're all running on the same buggy software. The brain is the most complex object in the known universe. 86 billion neurons, 100 trillion connections. It creates consciousness, whatever that is. It creates you. And it's running you right now mostly without your permission. This is psychology, the manual for being human. Nobody gave it to you at birth, but now you have it.
