We Killed Boredom. Big Mistake.

There has never been a moment in human history where being bored was this difficult. And yet somehow there's also never been a moment where people reported feeling more bored.

We have more entertainment, more content, more ways to fill every second than any generation in history. We have instant access to every movie ever made, every song ever recorded, and every piece of information humanity has accumulated. We should be the least bored people who ever lived. Instead, we're the most.

From 2010 to 2017, American teenagers' boredom level rose by 1.14% per year. Researchers in China measured college students from 2009 to 2020 and saw a similar pattern. You could only imagine how much more that number rose from then till now. Boredom keeps rising while our ability to avoid it keeps improving. The correlation runs backwards. The more ways we create to avoid it, the harder it gets.

But boredom, even for just a second, was probably the reason you even clicked on this video. Something about what you were doing stopped feeling meaningful. Your brain sent you a signal that you needed something different. You reached for this instead. That signal used to serve a purpose. Boredom was never just empty time or wasted moments. It was your brain's way of telling you that your current activity lacks meaning, that something needs to change, that you need to redirect your attention somewhere else. The discomfort was the information, and it used to be unavoidable.

You used to stand at bus stops with nothing but the street to look at. You sat in waiting rooms with outdated magazines you would have never read. You laid in bed before sleep with just your thoughts and the ceiling. Rode in cars standing out windows, waited in lines counting floor tiles. Dead time. Empty time. Time where nothing happened and you had no way to fill it. That time shaped us in ways we didn't understand until it disappeared.

In 1945, Percy Spencer was testing radar equipment. The work was tedious, but during one of those sessions, he noticed something odd. The chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. He could have been annoyed, cleaned it up, and kept working. The boredom of his task left enough mental space for curiosity. He placed popcorn kernels near the magnetrons. They popped. He tried an egg and it exploded. The idle curiosity led to the microwave oven.

40 years earlier, Albert Einstein was working as a patent clerk in Switzerland, reviewing applications for inventions he had no interest in, filling paperwork and stamping documents. The work demanded just enough attention to be boring, leaving vast stretches of mental downtime. He used that space to think about physics problems that had nothing to do with patents. That year, while bored at the desktop, he published the papers that would revolutionize our understanding of space, time, energy, and matter. Scientists call it his miracle year.

The pattern repeats throughout history. Isaac Newton developed his theories of gravity and calculus during the great plague of 1665 when Cambridge University shut down and he was stuck at home with nothing to do. Bored enough to wonder why an apple fell down instead of going up. Boredom was never just empty time. It was mental space where your brain could work on problems in the background. Make connections between ideas that seem unrelated. Notice things you wouldn't have noticed if you were occupied.

In 2001, neuroscientist Marcus Rakel at Washington University was studying brain activity during specific cognitive tasks. He and his team noticed that certain brain regions became more active when people weren't doing anything. Then when they were focused on a task, this went against everything they expected. The brain wasn't resting during downtime. It was activating a different network entirely. It turns out your brain is never idle. When you're not focused on something external, when you're just sitting there doing nothing, your brain shifts into a different mode. It starts doing maintenance, memory consolidation, integrating experiences, planning for the future, reflecting on the past, making connections between unrelated ideas. This is where creativity happens. It's where insight forms. It's where your brain takes all the scattered information you've accumulated and tries to make sense of it. But it only activates when you're not focused on something else. When your attention isn't captured, meaning when you're bored, and we don't let that happen often enough anymore.

A decade later, researchers started testing whether boredom actually improved creativity. They gave people boring tasks before asking them to solve creative problems. The bored groups performed 41% better. Another experiment had people copy numbers from a phone book for 15 minutes, then generate creative uses for a cup. The most boring condition produced the most creative responses. The discomfort of having nothing to do pushed your mind to wonder, and that wondering led somewhere useful.

Philosophy itself is born from this state. Every major philosophical question emerged from someone sitting with nothing to do. Mind wandering into uncomfortable territory. What is the meaning of life? Why does anything exist? How should I live? What matters? These questions don't surface when you're occupied. They emerge only during empty time when your mind has space to drift into existential territory that most people spend their lives avoiding. Boredom forces confrontation with big questions. What am I doing with my life? Am I wasting time on things that don't mean anything? Where is this going? The discomfort of having nothing to do pushes your mind toward meaning, toward purpose, toward examination of whether you're living the way you want to live. That's why boredom feels uncomfortable. You're being pushed to think about things you'd rather not think about, and it usually leads to questioning meaning and becomes motivation to seek more of it. That's why bored people often donate, volunteer, and help others more consistently. The aimlessness triggers questions about purpose. Helping provides answers.

Boredom was the push. You just have to tolerate it long enough to feel where it was directing you because it isn't a flaw in human psychology. It's a feature, an evolutionary one. John Eastwood describes it as an aversive experience of wanting but being unable to engage in satisfying activity. It's your brain telling you that what you're doing isn't working, that you need to change something, find a new goal, seek better stimulation, explore. In fact, animals that get bored are favored by natural selection because they don't settle. They seek new environments, new challenges, new sources of meaning. Boredom is what prevented our ancestors from sitting in the same cave forever. It's what drove exploration, innovation, adaptation. Complacency kills. Boredom prevents complacency.

It's a signal, but like any other, it only works if you actually respond to it. If you just cover it up with distraction, the signal never gets processed. The underlying issue never gets addressed. You feel the discomfort, numb it briefly, and then feel it again over and over. That's what phones do. Apps are specifically designed to fill every gap, occupy every pause, eliminate every second of nothing. The average person now checks their phone 352 times per day, once every 2 minutes and 43 seconds. Just 3 years earlier, that number was just 96. Our attention spans collapsed as well. Research tracking screen activity for 20 years found that people averaged 2 and 1/2 minutes on a single screen in 2004. The latest data today shows 47 seconds instead. And it's not like this was an even trade-off. People who use their phones to escape boredom still report higher levels of it afterward. They also report increased fatigue. The thing we turn to for relief only made the problem worse. And yet, you keep doing it because the relief is immediate and the cost is delayed. In the moment, scrolling feels better than sitting with the discomfort. But an hour later, you're more bored, more tired, and less satisfied than if you just let yourself be bored in the first place.

In 2014, researchers tested how intolerable boredom had become. They put people in a room alone for 15 minutes with nothing to do. They also gave them a button that delivered a painful electric shock. Participants even tried the shock beforehand and confirmed it hurt. They also said they'd pay money to avoid it. But when they sat with nothing but their thoughts, 67% of men and 25% of women chose to shock themselves rather than be bored. One person even pressed the button 190 times. We reached the point where physical pain became preferable to empty time. And that's not normal. That's not how humans are supposed to function. But it's where we are now.

Part of this is deliberate design. Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist at Google, has talked about how tech companies engineer their products to be addictive. The goal was to eliminate every moment where you might stop using the product, every gap where boredom might appear. They succeeded. So much that we're now bored by things that would have amazed anyone 20 years ago. Modern boredom doesn't come from having nothing to do. It comes from having everything available and finding none of it interesting enough. You're overstimulated to the point where stimulation itself stops working, which creates a strange state where you're constantly occupied but never engaged, consuming content without processing it, filling time without satisfying anything. The phone keeps you from being bored in the old sense while making you chronically bored in a new one. That being trapped in a loop, seeking stimulation that never quite satisfies, never bored enough to stop, but never engaged enough to feel present. And breaking that loop is the hard part. You know, you should put the phone down, but in the moment, the pull is always too strong.

The irony is that by trying to kill boredom, we've accidentally killed the very thing that makes us creative, reflective, and ultimately human. All just for bursts of dopamine that leave us feeling even more empty. And that's somehow acceptable because we've changed how we perceive boredom culturally. It used to be a normal part of life. People would tell you they were bored and you'd shrug. Time had gaps and that was fine. Now boredom feels more like failure, like you're wasting time. Not being productive, not optimizing every moment. Productivity culture turned every empty second into an opportunity that you missed. Rest itself became inefficiency.

But your brain needs downtime. Sleep research has proven this. The processing of information that happens in your sleep can't happen while you're actively engaged with the world. The same principle applies to waking rest. Your brain needs time when it's not consuming new information. When it can work through what's already there, make connections, integrate and reflect. So the problem was never boredom itself. It was our intolerance of it. The moment boredom shows up, we reach to erase it. We treat it like a bug in the system instead of a signal. We silence it before it can finish saying what it came to say. But boredom isn't asking to be entertained. It's asking to be listened to. It's the space where your mind checks in with itself. Where unfinished thoughts surface. Where questions you've been avoiding finally get loud enough to hear. Where meaning finds enough room to form.
