Okay, so welcome everyone to the first module in this course, where we're going to talk about innovation. What exactly do we mean when we use this term? Just to get on the same page, there are, of course, many different ways of interpreting, uh, innovation and different perspectives on it. Um, here, we're going to just quickly give one outline and say that it's the creation and application of new ideas towards the development of new products, services, business processes, we'll call them configurations, that change established practices. A few kind of key aspects there, uh, creation of new ideas, the application in the development of new configurations towards changing established ways of doing things.
We'll break that down, uh, now in a minute, but I think this slide paints the bigger picture, um, around what we're doing here. When we say innovation, it's about connecting the pieces in new ways to create, uh, new systems, whatever they may be. So, we're essentially taking something from a disordered or unordered state and trying to transform it into a more ordered and functional system that can deliver value, functions, and value for for people.
I'd say very generally, there are many different types of innovation, um, in products and services and businesses, in in organizations, so on and so forth. But I think generally, in in systems also, we might say. But I think generally, this kind of captures what we're we're trying to do here, um, navigate and live with, uh, some kind of chaotic or disordered state and bring that into a state of, uh, more order that's able to provide some kind of function and value to to people.
So, we'll just break it down slightly more structured, structured way here. Four different aspects to it or the process we're going through, you might say. It's about seeing, seeing opportunities, looking out there in the world or looking at something in new ways and seeing new possibilities there. We'll talk about these briefly now in a minute, but just to give another view from that, we're going to create new configurations, whatever they may be, product, services, and so forth. Um, and this is going to solve a problem. This new configuration is serving some function, and it's going to solve a problem for someone and thus be of some some value in the world.
So, these are key, key aspects: seeing, looking at the world in new ways to see new opportunities, creating some new configuration, some new system based upon that, that is ordered in a way that's able to deliver a function, to solve a problem, and create value for people.
So, just quickly to go over those, because so it kind of starts with looking at things in new ways to see new possibilities that other people haven't seen before, um, and that could, uh, we could be doing innovation in anything here. It could be the way our organization is managed, it could be, um, you know, the way that we deliver a product to the customer, the way we organize our supply chain, and so forth. We come in and through the adoption of new ideas, those ideas, that mental model helps us look at this situation, this context, the environment in new ways, and thus see new opportunities, new ways of doing things. And that's kind of the starting, starting position.
And then from that, we're going to find new ways to put the parts together into configurations, um, that are helping to actually solve a problem for someone, um. So, it's not putting these parts together in any random way. It's putting them together in a way that's actually delivering a function. And when it does, of course, it's going to actually create value for people. And that is a particular way of changing systems. Um, there are many different ways of making change happen in the world. This is a particular way where we're taking new ideas, new ways to look at the world, we're applying those to create new configurations, creating value for someone, and, and in so doing, starting to attract people towards that new way of doing things. And that's a way of changing things in the world.
So, that was the first module, we're talking, uh, briefly around what do we mean by this term innovation, and we'll move on from here.
