Hey everybody, and welcome to the Grow Leader podcast, where we grow leaders that grow churches by helping them reach their full potential. My name is Matt. So glad to have you with us today.

If you're new to the podcast, be sure and go by and visit growleader.com to learn about all the ways that we can help resource you and your church. Welcome, Pastor Chris.

You said that very well, my friend. Thank you very much. No one will ever know that that was our second take. That was our second take. Just full transparency. Hopefully, there won't be a third. We'll tell you that if there is, though. That's fun.

No, no, I'm I'm really thrilled to be here. Uh, as people are listening to this right now, I am gratefully uh on break uh just getting a little R&R time. I've been pushing pretty hard the last few months and but I'm so glad that everybody's online and then man, July is an exciting month because we have Serve Day and for us our student conference, Motion Conference, and then of course the Grow Leader Conference and unfortunately it's already sold out has been for several months but um excited about that. It's going to be a great time together.

But really looking forward to introducing someone that I really don't even know that well yet. We're we're becoming friends. We've played some golf together. But I want to introduce to everybody Clint Phillips who is in the medical field. He's going to introduce himself, tell his story. Uh I met Clint at an event that we were hosting at Highlands College uh to raise some money for our wonderful school that I'm so passionate about. In fact, we're sitting right here in the podcast studio of Highlands College. just gave Clint and some of his friends a tour of the college and uh but we sat at this dinner table and he began to unpack what he does. You know, the same conversation you always have when you're sitting with someone, hey, what do you do? And man, um he started talking about his his passion for getting people healthy. And I can't think of a better topic right here in the middle of summer when hopefully pastors and leaders are getting themselves healthy uh to talk about how we can get healthier uh medically. And so Clint, welcome to the Growleader podcast. We're so glad that you're here.

Thank you, Chancellor. It's a real honor to be here. And as you could tell already, uh you're not from Alabama. I'm from the deep south. Deep South. South Africa. Yes, you are. And so I asked you at the dinner table that night to tell me uh more about your story. And just start right at the beginning. I want people to get to know you and then I really want to get into this content about uh health especially you know medically how do we can make ourselves healthier that's an area that's growing like by leaps and bounds right now we're know more about how our bodies operate and I'm kind of very fascinated with right now I've lost a little weight since the beginning of the year and I'm trying to lean into it I think something about turning 60 u and and feeling the deterioration of my body that's got me really got got my attention but I can't wait to unpack this but let's begin with your story. I mean, tell us tell us the story you told me sitting at at the table that night.

Yes. Uh, Chancellor, I was uh born in South Africa, born and raised. Um, very difficult father uh in and out, lived on the street for a little while. My father shot the assistant pastor at one stage. So, our life was very tumultuous. But I had an incredible mother who still to this day we call her the Bible. And um we had an amazing church. And so through all the things we could go to God's house every weekend and just see God move. We could feel his presence. We could experience him. And uh just an incredible pillar in our uh in our lives. I uh came from a a short-lived family. My grandparents were dead by the time you know we were in high school. My father died at 55. A man who sort of took me under his wing died at 50. And so from a young age I was interested in like hey can you really change your your stars because it doesn't seem so uh so attractive um and you know uh just seeing the decline often of people. So I often you know was looking when I was reading the scripture going hey Lord uh I see you talk about 70. I see you talk about 120. I see Methuselah you know um help me understand this. So that was always a theme. I loved sport. I was a rugby player. Um I uh decided I wanted to stay close to sport. Okay. Um and so I studied chiropractic and physical therapy, became a doctor of chiropractic and uh it was a wonderful foundation to really stay with sport. Um also loved rugby and I promised myself when I finished I would take a trip and people said to me you have to go play in Aspen, Colorado. And I said well America rugby in Aspen, Colorado. That's what I said. I said um you know they're not serious about rugby in America. They said, "Oh, this town loves rugby. In fact, they are the national champions for 5 years running, best in the nation." Wow. I thought that can't be can't be real, but if Okay. So, I sent them my resume. They said, "We don't care about your resume. Come play. Show us how you play." I'd watched Dumb and Dumber 14 times. And I thought, "Aspen, it sounds great." And so, I took the plunge and uh based on a uh a movie uh moved to Aspen uh for a season to play rugby. Um during that time I met some amazing gentlemen whose lives had been destroyed by back pain. They were 60. They had all the money in the world and they couldn't really live their lives. And I said, "Well, you know, I've graduated a month ago. I'll fix you." And uh I always just knew that, you know, uh whatever the gap was, I just read this interesting book called Pray First, and it says the difference between um prayer is the difference between your best and God's best. That's right. And that just really stayed with me cuz I was really praying that at the time like Lord help help close this gap because I'm new to this profession. These guys have been the seen the best surgeons in the world and I'm going to try to help them. And they both got better and they said you can't go back to South Africa. You've like given us our life back. And they started bringing people from Aspen. They started flying friends in from around the country. And the complexity got harder and harder, which means my prayer life had to grow significantly because people were arriving, you know, in pretty bad shape, right? And um that led to opening a clinic at the St. Regis Hotel. I met the founder and uh CEO of Starwood Hotels, and he had put together these hotels. I said um man, my dream is a five-star destination where people can experience something like walking around Highlands College, something that they go, this is special. that can feel something different. They can feel the love. They can feel um you know the excellence. And we opened up this clinic and people came from around the world including to do mostly chiropractic or all types of you know we had I'd learned to borrow therapies. I'd travel wherever I went. I've had the been blessed to go to 55 countries and I've learned from every single one of them. I go for therapy. I understand the health care system. I go and visit places and I really want to understand. And so I borrowed from so many different therapies to say how do you really get somebody well? My doctorate was in low back strengthening. Um and so we had learned there was certain ways you could strengthen your way out of a massive amount of problems. Wow. Massive amount. And so we put together these wonderful therapies um and all sorts of uh challenges to get there. But it became a wonderful destination of healing. People came from as far as New Zealand. Before I knew it, the Saudi royal family, uh European royal families were coming or asking me to come to them in their country. And so the Lord just opened up more doors than I could ever imagine. I had, you know, the CEO of um uh Starbucks was my 8:00 and the CEO of Under Armour was my 9:00 and Walter Isacson, you know, who's written Steve Jobs books and all these was my 10:00 and I'm learning from them. I would have paid if I could have afforded to have the time with them. Wow. And here they were paying me to tell me their life and they were spending 3 4 hours uh a day and um the Lord had opened incredible doors. But uh we ran into a challenge when my little girl Gabby had a stroke. Um she's our third child born in Aspen. We didn't even know a baby could have a stroke. And you know the prognosis was terrible. And we thought, man, this is a this is a life-changing u moment here. And what was the cause of it? It was about 30 minutes after a vaccination um hepatitis B, which is a sexually transmitted um a vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease. My wife didn't have that, but they do give it to babies routinely and some do react um negatively. Yeah. Wow. And so what are you doing now? I mean, where did that evolve into what you're doing now?

Yeah. Well, um we started trying to find help for our daughter and we spent months waiting at some of these places to get an appointment. And I remember we waited 4 months to meet with a doctor at Texas Children's and in the first minute she said, "Oh, I don't work with stroke." We said, "Doc, we've waited four months." Oh, wow. you know, we've traveled here. We're staying in a hotel. You were recommended. We sent all our information. How does that happen? And she said, "Oh, don't worry. Give you another doctor." With a three-month waiting list. We're like, "Seven months to have one conversation with the doctor." So, we started a business called Second MD that would match people with the world's best doctors. And it was really a god idea. And it was 20 times harder than I thought. I was like, "I've got this idea, mom. We're going to get the world's best doctors who going to meet with people virtually." This is before co before anybody had met with doctors virtually. So we're going to get the world's best doctors and they're going to be online and uh it sounded great. We sold our clinic and we said we're going to um we're going to pursue this. We moved to Houston, Texas and started this business that would match people with the world's best doctors. Very difficult for 10 years and then somebody offered me a eyewatering number that I still get on my knees two three times a week and just say Lord thank you. Um what a blessing this this has been. And um we were able to solve conditions in every single disease imaginable. We signed up uh nearly 9 million members because 300 of the Fortune 500 companies bought our service for their people. Wow. They said when our people get in trouble, we want them to be able to access the best at Mayo, Cleveland, Johns Hopkins, MD Anderson. The beautiful part was it was all virtual and people didn't have to travel across. They didn't have to drain their bank accounts. It was free. We helped the we had 27,000 truck drivers from Waste Management who spoke Spanish and we solved unbelievable cases for people who needed it the most as well as colleges as well as investment bankers.

And so what are you doing today? First of all, how's your daughter?

Thank you for asking. Let's go back to that story. Oh my gosh. My little Gabby um she could they said she would never walk or talk. there was a lot of scar tissue in her brain. Um, and the doctors have grown to say, "Hey, the this the brain on the MRI is not the girl sitting in front of me. There's no way." So, um, it uh I I cry every time I think about her. Raising her has been the great privilege of my life. She's 15 now. She's beautiful. She still uh struggles to use her right hand, but you would never notice it. She's beautiful. She has a deep love for the Lord. She sends our pastor her sermon notes afterwards. She puts it into little presentations and I mean she just is. We're excited to see what the Lord has for her.

Okay. So now what are you doing today?

So now we're having real fun. was saying, Lord, um, one of the things we saw that was really, uh, very insightful was we were often getting people who were in a terrible mess, and we realized if we could have caught that person a week before, a month before, a year before, 10 years before, it would have been such an easy fix. But now we're dealing with a person who's had seven back surgeries. Their heart, they're under about to undergo heart surgery. They don't know what's going to happen. um or they you know they've got a cancer and diabetes and all these challenges and we're like wow this could have really been prevented so we started a company called Medici and said we want to go upstream I heard this wonderful story about this guy who saw a kid coming down the river like drowning and he jumps in pulls the kid out the water and um then sees another kid another kid and as he's pulling these kids out of the water he starting to get tired he sees another guy and he says hey help me these kids and so they're pulling these kids out the waters. They're coming down the stream. Eventually, one of the guys quits and he walks away. The other guy says, "Where are you going?" He says, "I'm going upstream to see who is throwing kids in the water." Wow. Wow. And that really just hit me like we are dealing with the downstream effects of terrible health. Uh, Americans are living four years shorter than they were living 5 10 years ago. It's going the other way. We live four years less. We are afflicted with more pain. It's it's record Alzheimer's, autism, um you name the disease, allergies, um anxiety, the every every metric is in the wrong direction. Why? We uh really don't understand how to take care of the incredible gift that God gave us. He gave us this beautiful um body that is a miracle. I mean, it really is a miracle. I could talk for two hours on just how fearfully and wonderfully we are made and created, but we are in an environment that's becoming ever more toxic. We believe that medications are the solve for everything. Um, by God's grace, I've taken five tablets in my whole life and two of them were Tylenol. I'm 50 years old because I believe that a God heals us and b he's given us an incredible vessel. My family history will show you my genetics are not great. um you know my family have not lived uh have not lived long so we don't know how to take care of the temple. Jesus walked. I've been to Israel a few times. He walked 40 miles just like we walk. Like today you say to somebody, "Hey, walk three miles." Like, "Are you crazy?" You know. Um so I think we have lost touch with the incredible creation that we have. We have often um sort of outsourced it. I can go as deep as much as you want to. I want to help these pastors because that, you know, this is this is this is true of everyone honestly. Everybody needs to have a better understanding of of of their health needs, but I can only speak for our our profession, man. It's it's pretty epidemic, you know, just the the routine that pastors have, you know, and and and seeing how they care for themselves and the the stress and the pressure. And so, I want I want you to offer anything that's going to actually help some leaders because you there's some medical breakthroughs happening. I mean, you were telling me some at the dinner table about just some of the things we're learning about medicines and things and or or treatments and the ways that we can help people. I mean, give us a give us an overview of what's available if someone says, you know what, I'm tired of feeling this way. What what would you tell us?

Well, um pastors, you a have to think about yourself and your health and how you can live. We can see that pastors the stress that they have, the health condition, some of them are cutting short their ministries by 20, 30 years. Wow. the energy that they have. You know, they're in the job, but my gosh, they have so little energy. You can I've got more energy at 50 than I had at 40. I got I had more at 40 than I had at 30. So, understanding the energy and the healing power that God has for us and through us. Also, you have to think about your congregation. I am a greeter at my church. I love the job. As they come through, I stand with our senior pastor and I hug people as they come through. But my heart breaks because I see people who will live 20, 30 years shorter than they should. They will live with pain. They will be reliant on medications. They will not have the energy to play with their kids, play with their grandkids. There's trips they'll never be able to do. There's ministry mission trips. They can't go on a mission trip. There's no way. So, um, it's not all doom and gloom. The doom is that Americans now take 22 times more drugs per person than the rest of the world. Wow. 22 times. Not twice as many, not 10 times as many, 22 times more many. The beautiful part is that we can absolutely turn this around. We pastors, I want you to know that you are a miracle. Your body is a miracle and we have to feed it and we have to take care of what we put in it. We have to take care of sleep. If you think you can shortcut sleep for 10 years and not pay a price, I've got some bad news for you. If you think you can just eat fast food and the things that are put in front of us and not pay a price, you will absolutely uh pay a price. We have built all sorts of resources. One of the favorites uh and we've, you know, just attracted some of the most incredible investors and things to do it. But we built an app called Dr. Gabby after my daughter. My daughter's name is Gabby. You can go to the app store. It's doctor.Gabby in the app store. It's the only app Apple have ever allowed that can read blood pressure uh off your face. So, you scan your face for 30 seconds. It'll tell you your risk of a heart attack, a risk of a stroke. It'll tell you your blood pressure. It'll tell you any irregular heartbeats. Wow. Uh it'll tell you your skin age. So, make sure you've had a good night's sleep before you do it. Ladies in particular get upset. They love the app if uh it's for until it tells them some bad news. There's something there. But it'll also give you an overall out of 100 score and it'll say out of 100 here's your health. The beautiful part is we've got a AI that we've trained who we believe is the smartest preventative doctor in the world. She reads 8,000 articles a week and remembers every one of them. So when you ask her a question and you start to put your symptoms in there, she's not controlled by farmer. She's controlled by the best preventative minds in the world. You can also scan nearly uh a million food products by the barcode and it will not only tell you the score over all of that food. Um you can adjust it by your dietary preference. You can say, "Hey, I want to eat, you know, this, more of this, less of that." So you can adjust your dietary preferences. And we believe there's no better place for advice and we want to make it available. It's locked down for, you know, special members, but we're going to make it available for the amazing people who listen to your podcast. Wow.

If you want that, we'll put that in the show notes. First of all, thank you for doing that. Uh, that was the first thing that Clint offered us when he walked in today said, "I want I want to help your listener." And so, if you go to the the show notes today, you'll see the link there for the app, uh, Dr. Gabby, and we'll have a special code for you, Growleader 25. So, you can use the app for a period of time. I want to ask you, you've you've helped I mean some of the most influential people in the world and you've seen a lot of healthy people and a lot of really unhealthy people. For the listener right now, what are a couple of habits in in several areas physically, mentally, and emotionally that separate health from not health that that our listeners can go and do right now to start tomorrow?

The number one thing you can do by far is exercise. Exercise makes up for a lot of mistakes in other areas. In fact, studies show that sleep is incredibly important. But if you lack sleep, but you've exercised hard, your sleep is better and can actually be balanced uh because of it. So, deeply investing in exercise, equal parts of cardio and weight training. I mean, dive a little bit deeper on exercise. Uh the first thing I would want you to take care of is muscle mass. Muscle mass helps your metabolism. So if you know getting cardio burns calories, you can lose some weight, but um muscle mass just raises your metabolism for the rest of your life. I can eat more and make more mistakes because I I hold a certain amount of muscle mass. So I'd say strength is important. Cardiovascular exercise, sweating is not only good for your body, for your heart. It's actually really people feel significantly better afterwards. You you finish a hard 15, 20 minutes, something like that. It's amazing. My favorite activity of all is sprinting. Go to a field, sprint for 50 meters, and watch what changes in your body. It actually shows that it's about 14 times more effective than jogging long. Yeah. Wow. Sprinting. Sprinting is wildly more effective. And I learned that I uh run track. I won the 400 over 40 a few years ago nationally. But I went down to the track and I looked at there was the marathon runners on the one side and there was the sprinters on the other side. These dudes were 40 and 50. They were shredded and they looked 10, 15 years younger than the age. I went and met the marathon runners. They all look their age. Nice people, happy people, but they didn't look amazing. I was like, I think I want to learn more about that. Since we've studied deeply um into it and sprinting is really people get scared of it as they get older. You have to build into it. So you don't go and you got to expect you're going to have to build into this, but you can literally go to a field, run 10 times 50 m, 50 yards across and slowly build up to 100 and watch the changes in your your body. Wow.

And so what else? You said you started with exercise. We lose a little bit of bone mass every year. So we're losing about 1% of our bone mass. We're losing about 1% of our uh flexibility. So we have to be investing in activities for flexibility. you're going to just you one day you wake up and you're like I can't touch my toes. I can't bend this way. I can't do that way. This hurts. We have to invest in our uh flexibility. So all sorts of ways to be stretching, but you have to see this as like if you just want to maintain, you're going to have to stretch. If you want to make gains, you got to build this really uh into your uh into your life. Bone mass very important. We have a clinic that assesses you from head to toe. People come once a year. We assess. My wife just went through assessment and found out that she has got um osteopenia and a little bit of osteoporosis. She's 50, she's beautiful, she's fit, she's active. Um but now she has to go build bone mass. She has to do some boxing. Uh she has to do some striking. Um she has to make sure that her she has enough calcium, magnesium, uh in her body, and vitamin D to be able to help grow her bones. The best thing you can do for your health is always to get ahead of it. Um a wonderful Christian doctor, Dr. Kenneth Cooper said, "It's much easier to maintain health than to regain it once it's lost." So whatever you think your muscle mass, your bone mass, your flexibilities, make it better today because you will thank yourself 10, 15, 20, 30 years later. The beautiful part is we've seen 60 year olds come in, had a heart attack, turn their life around, and will tell you at 65 I feel better than I did at 55 and I'm getting better and better. So that's some of the things to start doing.

What are the some of the things we need to stop doing?

I think we have to have such a hard look at the food. You know, we we because it's normal. If you watch sports today and we love sports, we, you know, we go to wonderful events. If you watch sports, you're watching commercials for fast food and you're watching commercials for farmer ads. True. They're making you sick and then they're saying, "Hey, this will help you." It's It's crazy. A kid has, you know, by the time you've watched a few years of sport, you've watched like 50,000 farmer ads. you've watched more deep dish pizza, you know, and it be and you think of it as normal. Fast food should be something as a once a month special, you know, lucky go out, do it, you couldn't do something else, but getting back to people growing their food, knowing where your eggs come from, knowing where your m and I'm I'm a city guy. I'm not looking to like plant all my own things, but you have to start to understand where that food comes from. Because if you understand the food, um, you'll start to be able to see there's certain things. There's behaviors in children that when they remove screens and they remove processed foods, what they thought needed to be medicated, the kids just get better and they're like, "Hey, my kids just nicer. My kids's just happier."

So, what do you do when someone's coming to you? Like, if I were to come to your clinic and say, "Evaluate me, figure out what I'm eating that I shouldn't be eating." Like, what what is that process? Cuz I I've never done something like that, but I would really love to come to a clinic like yours and just get evaluated. What What happens through that process?

Oh, we would love to have you. It's a 4-hour experience where we look at how are your eyes and ears doing, how is your we put how's your heart doing. So, we draw 50 labs. We look for 50 different cancer markers. So, we can detect cancer in the earliest earliest stage before you know anybody before most ways people used to find out they got stage three, stage four. The worst case scenario, we find somebody at stage one where it's very easy to uh treat. We look at your skin. We actually have cameras that take photos of your skin and AI looks and says, "Hey, that wasn't there last year and that looks a little that's changed. So, we need to get that um taken care of. We also want to understand how are you eating." We look at um we do a dexa scan which looks at your bone mass. It looks at your fat mass and it can tell you hey around this organ and that organ there's quite a bit of fat around there and these are the types of activities or foods we're going to do to be able to reduce the the grip that that fat is having. Um I've got you know genetically some arteries that are thicker. So we look via ultrasound to say hey those arteries are getting a little thick there. Uh what are you going to do? I've had to reduce uh the amount of red meat and move heavily towards fish. Um things like that. And the beautiful thing is every single one of us are unique. God has made us different. And you know some people can touch their toes at 80 years old and other people like they having to work at that from 10 years old. Um so understanding who you are, what's unique and what's special uh for you. We can even look at your DNA and tell you all 22,000 genes. I have got I'm at risk for diabetes. um high blood pressure and it showed me that if I have green tea, matcha green tea has lowered my blood pressure 10 points. Other people that same caffeine in that tea will raise their blood pressure. So it's knowing you as uh as an individual and then the beautiful part is that the solutions are often so simple like crazy simple when you tell the tell person like what I have to do um I want you to take this cardamom spice. It's really going to help you like yeah but like what else? like no that's going to make a significant difference and if you'll get about 45 minutes of sleep and do these three exercises that pain will go sleep will get better here and these risks change so it is we've been told that it's so difficult so complicated God has made us our bodies to heal we just have to put the right inputs um just like we teach spiritual inputs mental inputs you know

What are you most excited about as far as medical breakthroughs? I know I mean I I've been to it seems like the last three um um leadership meetings that I've been in, they've they've invited some type of medical expert or a doctor and they're telling us I've heard some things that are just mindboggling. One one went so far to say that if you could just live five more years, what they're going to learn in the next 5 years is going to help you to live 20 years longer. I mean, it was just I my mind was blown. What are you most excited about when it comes to what's happening in medical breakthroughs that would that would give pastors and leaders hope and then end with here's your next step, pastor, go do this today.

Yes. Um, the first in no particular order, DNA is incredibly exciting. Understanding who you are. What my wife needs is different to what me we what I need. So, understanding your DNA has is able to show insights that are incredible. It'll tell you what type of exercise, what type of food, what type of supplements, what type of uh light um you know that you need, the amount of sunlight that you need, the type of environment, the type of um I have DNA that makes it very hard to learn language. I always flunked language courses. It's like what the heck's wrong with me? I'm trying really hard. My DNA, but I also have DNA that shows uh I have a high ability to take risk. And so just understanding who you are really connects me with the Lord to say, "Wow, Lord, that was really interesting. Tell me more. Show me how to steward, you know, the gifts that you've given me." The next part is AI. AI, you know, it's so hard. The best doctors in the world are locked behind doors, behind seven groups of employees, you know, and insurance and everything to access their minds. You can now access their mind in and more. Uh doctors read 100 articles a month. As I said, our AI can read 8,000 and remember every one of them. It is so exciting that you can pass through this incredible difficult information and you can access it really easily. So AI, not only are we using it to scan your face or to look at your skin, you will see that you have to on our app and there's others um you can access smarter doctors than the richest people in the world could access 5 years ago. If you gave me the choice between accessing the smartest doctor in the nation at that thing or app is not even close. It's not even close. So the access for everybody uh we've just been asked by the uh minister of health for Uganda to say could we use your AI to be our national health care system. I mean and you know what it would cost next to nothing to be able to deliver and use that. So that's incredibly exciting. I think there's some uh aging things coming down the pipeline that start to present really helpful. But what we have learned that if people can't change their behaviors so I can give you the best knowledge and say this is going to help you that's going to help you. But if you can't put on those shoes and do a little it's not going to help at all. So we come back to hey I need habits I need discipline. I need uh companionship or empower you know I need people around me. I need a coach. You speak about coaching all the time. My important is you need people around you. I can tell your BMI, your body mass index. I can tell your body fat by your five friends. So I don't even have to meet you. Say, "Let me introduce your five people." Boom. I know you got 27% body fat and be spot-on accurate. Wow. So we might have to change some friendships. We might have to change some habits. Wow. I laughed. We did a running group. Our church following your model loves your model. They come out and are part of all your conferences. Shout out to Christian Life Austin. But we said, "We are going to have a running uh connection group." Yeah. We're going to run. We're going to get people together. We're going to run. And so we standing there, we smiling. We high-fiving people. We're getting their names. We get eight names down. The table next to us haven't even attended. But theirs is called an eating club. They are on their third page of names. They got like 80 names and they're not even there. People are just like writing it down. And you see like the habit of I'd much rather eat than go run. So, we got a few little changes to uh to make. So, the next step is just we have to get out there and do it. So, we got we got to start moving and we got to help our brothers and sisters in the Lord to say, "Hey, we got to start moving. Let's park our car at the furthest part of the church. Let's not take the good parking. Hey, if you want to invest in the church, go and park in the furthest way and start a habit of walking."
