Hi, my name is Guiam Yod. I'm a French cerist. So I'm from the southern part of France called Province. It's been four years.
Originally I was a graphic designer and elementary school teacher and I wanted to have a break. So that's why I came to Korea. I wanted to make something with my hands. I always love art and history. That's why I chose ceramic.
So my first experience with ceramic is uh when I was in Japan cuz I used to live in different countries before. So when I was in Japan, I think it was just a event and I took part of it. So I tried the the wheel throwing and I really liked it. The feeling touching the material directly. It's very different from my experience as a graphic designer. Uh you walk through a screen a computer but touching the material was very interesting for me.
I decided in 2022. So it was right after the corona. It was really hard time especially as a teacher. You know you have to wear a mask and you have very strict rules. So I wanted a kind of freedom. I think I think deep inside is something that I really wanted for a very long time.
Uh many things surprised me when I arrived in Korea. One of the thing that amazed about was the way that Korean reinvent things. always find a way to make new trends. The trends are very quick here appear, spread, and then disappear all of a sudden. And also, one of the things that are more related to Koreans in general was the fact that Korean seems a bit cold at first, but once you know them, actually, you realize how kind they are. And actually, I think French and Korean are pretty similar about that. French can seem cold also, but I think we are nice people.
I think what really attracted me in Korean ceramics is the apparent simplicity, actual complexity of the the shape. Korean ceramics are not only functional things. They have also a real sense of design in it. They love their history, but I think they are always a new way of changing the the past to make it contemporary. I think that was very interesting for me. And also I heard that uh Korean potters used to teach Japanese potters. Korea was the right country to go.
Korean ceramics seems more simple at first than Japanese ceramics. It's looks more modern. The the shape of the moonja is very attractive to me. The very roundly shape is what I really like.
I was very lucky to work for because uh he is an artist that I really admire. So I was very glad when I came here for the first time. It was still under construction, but I could see the vibe, could see the interesting uh blend of traditional Korean style. And also what I liked was it's not only a place that's good for social media. It's a real uh place to work.
So if I would have to choose three words to describe my class, it would be passion, discovery, and kindness. Because ceramics is a very long process to learn. Yes, it's definitely a beginner's friendly class. Yes. So, every students will get a certificate written and signed by Hungu. We will have a little piece of Korean clay. It's a mix of art, design, history.
