[Music] The third house is the house of the lower mind, thinking, and communications. Siblings, social activity, interests, neighbors, and our early education. Siblings and neighbors are ruled by the third house because these are people with whom we communicate with often, at least traditionally. The natural ruler of this house is Mercury. It is a yang house, its element is air, its modality is mutable, and its perspective is personal.
The third house has to do with assimilation and transmission of information. It is where we find our ideas, speech, and our attitudes toward anyone in our immediate environment with whom we can communicate. It includes current events and news. The types of activities that play out in this house are primarily about information gathering, learning, and sharing what we learn through communicating it to others. Our opinions are based on the information we acquire in the third house. The quality and pace of our thinking and speech is also ruled by this house.
This is a stimulating house. The third is an area of life where things happen quickly and at a faster pace. With planets in the third house, we are looking for a lot of input and activity. A curious energy defines this house. This house also shows our daily interests. Modern technology has introduced new modes of communication, so the third house is more broad in its scope than ever and includes all forms of communications, such as the phone, radio, internet, email, texting, and TV.
The opposing ninth house is the house of beliefs, what our opinions of the third house grow into when reinforced and taught, how we are taught in our later education, how others' beliefs influence us. The third is a flexible house and illustrates how much easier it is to form and change an opinion than a belief, and how opinions can be acquired from any number of sources. The third house is also descriptive of our basic education, grades kindergarten through high school, how we learned and organized early information.
A third house that is emphasized in the birth chart shows someone who wants to mentally and often verbally engage, and they will often have an intellectual tendency. The third house represents the stage in human development between ages four and seven years old. This is the stage when we start to ask why.
