Every student knows that the area of a circle is pi r squared, but no one can actually tell you why. Don't just memorize the formula. Look at the geometry behind it.

Here's the standard circle. If we want to find the true area, let's slice it into 32 pizza slices. Now, let's unfold those slices and lay them out in a straight line.

If we take half of these slices and flip them upside down, they interlock perfectly with the other half, a little zipper. Just look at the shape we've built. It's a rectangle.

And to find the area of this rectangle, we just need the base and the height. The height of this rectangle is literally just the length of one pizza slice, which is the radius of a circle, r.

But what about the base? The base is made up of exactly half of the circle's outside edge. We know the full outside edge is the circumference, 2 pi r. So, exactly half of that edge is just pi r.

The area of a rectangle is base times height. So, we multiply base, pi r, times the height, r, and we get pi r squared.
