Let's listen to what the Lord says in his word and then we'll come to him in prayer.
Right now, as you listen to these words, some of you may be experiencing a spiritual life that is slowly dying while sleeping through the most critical moments of existence. The passion that once burned bright in your heart has dimmed to barely glowing embers. The disciplines that once strengthened your faith have been abandoned. The good works you started with such enthusiasm are gasping for breath, about to die from neglect.
This isn't about losing your salvation. This is about losing your spiritual vitality while you're still breathing. It's about becoming so comfortable in your complacency that you don't notice your soul is suffocating. It's about sleeping through the very life God called you to live with purpose and power. The most tragic thing isn't dying in your sleep. It's living in your sleep. Going through the motions of faith while your spirit grows weaker by the day.
Today, I want to share with you one of the most urgent wakeup calls found in scripture. It's a message that could save your spiritual life if you have the courage to receive it. It's not gentle. It's not comfortable. But it's exactly what your drowsy soul needs to hear. Revelation 3:2 declares with stunning urgency. Wake up. Strengthen what remains and is about to die.
Let me read that again because these words could be the difference between spiritual life and spiritual death. Wake up. Strengthen what remains and is about to die. This is Jesus speaking to the church in Sardis. But his words pierce through time to reach every believer who has fallen into spiritual slumber.
The Greek word for wake up is Gregoro, which means to stay awake, to watch, to be vigilant. It's the same word used for a soldier on guard duty who must stay alert because lives depend on his watchfulness. Jesus isn't giving a gentle suggestion here. This is a divine emergency alert system going off. It's a spiritual defibrillator being applied to a heart that's about to stop beating. The urgency in his voice should shake us to our core because he sees what we often refuse to see. That we're dying while we think we're just resting.
The phrase strengthen what remains tells us that something is still alive, but barely. There are still embers glowing in the ashes of what once was a blazing fire. There's still breath in the lungs, but it's shallow and labored. There's still a pulse, but it's weak and irregular. Jesus is saying, "Don't let what little life remains slip away. Fight for it. Protect it. nurture it back to health."
I've come to understand that spiritual sleep is one of the most dangerous conditions a believer can experience because it feels so peaceful. When you're spiritually asleep, you're not in obvious rebellion against God. You're not living in blatant sin. You're not denying your faith. You're just drifting. You're going through the motions without the emotions. You're maintaining the appearance of spiritual life while the reality slowly fades away.
The enemy doesn't need to kill your faith if he can just put it to sleep. He doesn't need to destroy your relationship with God if he can just make it boring and routine. He doesn't need to remove you from the church if he can just make you a passive observer instead of an active participant.
Spiritual sleep happens gradually, almost without notice. It starts when prayer becomes a chore instead of a privilege. It continues when reading the Bible feels like homework instead of receiving love letters from heaven. It progresses when worship becomes performance instead of passionate expression. It deepens when serving others feels like obligation instead of joyful obedience.
Before you know it, you're living on spiritual autopilot. You're saying the right words, but they carry no weight. You're going through the right motions, but they carry no meaning. You're maintaining the right appearance, but underneath your soul is malnourished and weak.
The truly frightening thing about spiritual sleep is that it's comfortable. It requires no effort, no risk, no vulnerability. You can coast on yesterday's encounters with God while today's opportunities slip away. You can live off past spiritual experiences while present possibilities die from neglect.
But comfort is not always your friend. Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is disturb your peace. Sometimes the greatest mercy he can show is to wake you up before it's too late. Sometimes his kindness looks like disruption. His love looks like urgency. His care looks like a holy alarm going off in your spirit.
Jesus sees what's about to die in your spiritual life. He sees the prayer life that's becoming more sporadic. He sees the passion for his word that's cooling. He sees the desire to serve that's waning. He sees the love for worship that's becoming routine. He sees the burden for the loss that's disappearing. He sees the hunger for his presence that's being satisfied by lesser things.
And in his infinite love, he refuses to let you sleep through your own spiritual death. He sounds the alarm not to condemn you, but to save you. He jolts you awake not to hurt you, but to heal you. He disrupts your comfort not to punish you but to preserve the precious life that remains in your soul.
The beautiful truth is that if something is about to die, it means it's not dead yet. There's still hope. There's still time. There's still life that can be strengthened and restored. God is not in the business of giving up on his children. He's in the business of resurrection, revival, and restoration.
But he needs your cooperation. He needs you to choose awakening over sleeping. He needs you to choose discomfort over complacency. He needs you to choose the shock of spiritual alertness over the deadly peace of spiritual slumber.
This is why we must pray for God to awaken our sleeping souls. We must ask him to be our divine alarm clock, our spiritual first responder, our holy defibrillator. We must give him permission to do whatever it takes to bring us back to full spiritual consciousness.
Now, let's come before our merciful savior in prayer, asking him to awaken our souls and strengthen what remains of our spiritual life.
Lord Jesus, I come before you today with a heart that recognizes the danger I'm in. I confess that my soul has been sleeping when it should have been watching. I have been drifting when I should have been directing my spiritual life with intentionality and purpose. I acknowledge that what once burned bright in my heart for you has dimmed to barely glowing embers. And I desperately need your awakening power.
Jesus, I hear your urgent voice calling to me. Wake up. Strengthen what remains and is about to die. I receive these words not as condemnation, but as the loving alarm of a savior who refuses to let me sleep through my own spiritual death. I recognize that you see things in my spiritual condition that I've been too comfortable to notice.
I confess that my prayer life has become weak and inconsistent. What once was a joyful conversation with my heavenly father has become sporadic and mechanical. I have allowed the busyness of life, the distractions of this world, and the comfort of routine to rob me of the sweet intimacy I once shared with you in prayer. Lord, I ask you to awaken my passion for prayer. Disturb my comfort with prayerlessness. Create in me such a hunger for your presence that I cannot rest until I've spent time in meaningful conversation with you.
I confess that my love for your word has grown cold. The Bible that once spoke to my heart with fresh revelation has become familiar and routine. I have allowed other voices to drown out your voice. I have fed my mind with so much of this world's content that I've lost my appetite for heavenly truth. Lord, awaken my hunger for your word. Open my eyes to see wonderful things in your law. Let your word become sweeter to my taste than honey and more valuable to my heart than gold.
I confess that my worship has become performance instead of passion. I have gone through the motions of praise while my heart remained distant and distracted. I have sung songs about your love without feeling that love deeply in my soul. I have participated in worship services while my spirit remained asleep. Lord, awaken true worship in my heart. Revive the awe and wonder I once felt in your presence. Make me a passionate worshipper who brings you glory not just with my voice but with every fiber of my being.
I confess that my faith has become comfortable and unchallenging. I have settled into a safe Christianity that requires little of me and expects little from you. I have stopped expecting miracles and settled for the mundane. Lord, awaken bold faith in my heart. Call me to adventures that require total dependence on you. Let me experience again the thrill of walking by faith and not by sight.
I confess that my love for you has become routine rather than revolutionary. What once transformed my entire existence has become just another part of my weekly schedule. The relationship that once defined me has become just one of many relationships competing for my attention. Lord, awaken fresh love for you in my heart.
Jesus, I give you permission to do whatever it takes to awaken my sleeping soul. If that means disturbing my peace, then disturb it. If that means disrupting my comfort, then disrupt it. If that means jolting me out of my spiritual slumber with circumstances that force me to depend on you completely, then I submit to your loving disruption.
I ask you to be my spiritual first responder. Perform CPR on the dying embers of my faith. Breathe your life back into the things that are fading away. Shock my heart back into proper spiritual rhythm. Don't let me sleep through the precious life you've given me. Don't let me waste another day in spiritual unconsciousness. Strengthen what remains in my spiritual life. Fan into flame the gifts you've given me. Revive the dreams and visions you've placed in my heart. Restore the calling you've placed on my life. Renew the passion that first drew me to you.
Lord, I choose the shock of awakening over the comfort of sleeping. I choose the challenge of spiritual alertness over the ease of spiritual slumber. I choose to live fully awake to your presence, your purposes, and your power. Help me to stay awake once you've awakened me. Give me the discipline to maintain spiritual vigilance. Surround me with people who will help keep me accountable. Put me in situations that require me to stay spiritually alert. Let your spirit be my constant companion, always ready to nudge me awake when I begin to drift.
Lord, thank you that you love me too much to let me sleep through my spiritual life. Thank you for caring enough to sound the alarm. Thank you for being willing to disturb my false peace, to give me your true peace. Thank you for refusing to give up on me even when I've been content to give up on myself. I believe you're answering this prayer even now. I can feel the stirring in my spirit. I can sense the awakening beginning. Continue this good work you've started. Complete the revival you've begun. Let this awakening spread to every area of my life until I am fully alive, fully awake, and fully yours. In your powerful and life-giving name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
If this prayer has awakened something in your spirit and you're ready to stop sleeping through your spiritual life, please type, "Wake up my soul, Lord," in the comments below. I believe that as you declare this truth, you're opening your heart to receive the spiritual awakening that only Jesus can bring. Amen.
