So, what does a 300,000 personal pension pot give you when you retire? To me, the pensions guy, your guide to financial planning, pensions, and smarter money decisions. You know the drill by now. Make sure you hit those buttons, give me a follow, and let's get into this.

So, let's assume you're a 65y old and you've built up around 300,000 in your pension. The first thing you're able to do is you can take 25% of the value of your fund completely tax-free. So that's 75,000 that you can immediately take from the pot taxfree. That leaves you 225,000 to provide an income in retirement.

Now you've broadly got two options. Option number one is you can use all of that 225,000 to buy a guaranteed income for life known as an annuity. And if you're a healthy 65year-old and chose a 3% increase in annuity that would provide you income of around £12,000 a year and that would be increasing every year until the day you die. The huge benefit here is certainty. you know that that income will come in for the rest of your life. The tradeoff is that once the annuity is set up, it's locked in and you need to make sure you choose things like death benefits and guarantees at the start.

Option number two is flexible draw down. So, as a rough guide, taking 4% would give you around 9,000 a year, 5% roughly 11,250 and 6% about 13,000 a year. The upside is flexibility and the ability to pass on any funds that's left after you die. The downside is there are no guarantees. The money is invested so it will go up and down and your income needs to be managed carefully over this period.

But in reality, you don't have to choose one or the other. You could take a blended approach. You could secure some guaranteed income and you could use some of the funds to retain flexibility using drawdown. It's about finding the right option and the right balance for you.

So, if you're starting to look at your retirement options, this is where speaking to a professional financial advisor might really help clarify the situation. They'll be able to guide you through the choices and explain the tradeoffs and help make sure you get the best income you can that fits your circumstances.

So, I'm Lea Pensions Guy helping you plan smarter and retire better. And as always, look after yourself, look after your money, and I'll speak to you very
