In today's video, I will share with you how to prepare your luggage, which will help you save a lot of money when you go to Australia, whether you are a student, on a working holiday visa, a tourist, or on a skilled visa. Today, I will guide you through the experience of preparing checked luggage.
On my left, there are many items that I have listed and prepared on this table. Now, I will take them out one by one and explain their uses so you can note them down or take screenshots to ensure you buy the most complete set of items. Regarding myself, I previously made a video about luggage preparation, Part 1, which many of you supported. So today, I will make Part 2.
Without further ado, let's get started. Please pay attention, take screenshots, or grab a pen and paper to write down. These are lessons learned from nearly 5 years of living in Australia, experiencing life in three different states, and traveling around. I have compiled these experiences.
Okay, let's start with the first item. The first item is a tempered glass screen protector for your phone. Always bring at least one. I bought one for my iPhone 11 Pro Max in Vietnam for only 30,000 VND. If you buy it here, it will cost you 7 to 8 dollars. That's the first item. Please write it down.
One. The second item is a notebook. Generally, about the size of a palm, about this big. Not too large, just a moderate size, or even a bit smaller. And to go with the notebook, you'll need a pen. You should buy two types of pens: black and blue. Each type has different uses, so please try to get two different colored pens, black and blue.
What's the purpose? First, for filling out customs declaration forms when you enter Australia. This is the first use because flight attendants do not provide pens on the plane. So, pens and notebooks are now the third item. Three items, everyone.
The fourth item is a roll of paper. This is not toilet paper; it has many uses. I'll call it multipurpose paper. Keep it in your carry-on luggage; it's extremely useful. If you have extra space, you can also put it in your checked luggage, but at least bring one roll. You'll discover its uses as you go.
What number are we on? 3, 4. The fifth item. The fifth item is toothpaste. At least bring one tube of toothpaste. Please put toothpaste in your checked luggage because it's over 100 ml. If you put it in your carry-on, they might confiscate it. So, that's the fifth item.
The fifth item is done. Let's move on to the sixth item. The sixth item is tape. You can buy two types, like I did: regular clear tape and double-sided tape. I bought two rolls like this. Trust me, bring them; they will be extremely useful later.
The sixth item is done. Moving on to the seventh item. If you like listening to music, buy a speaker. I recommend the JBL brand, which is waterproof. You can even drop it in a lake and it will still work. However, based on my experience with two speakers, this one is a bit large. If you travel a lot, buy a smaller one. Mine is a large model. Buy the Flip series, the smaller, more compact ones. This speaker is extremely useful when you go out to work in the fields, to listen to music, or for students to listen to music in their rooms; it's very good.
How many items have we covered? I've lost count. I'll count them later. The next item is a watch. Why do I mention a watch? Whether you're a student or on a working holiday, a watch is extremely important. Wear it to school or to work. Some workplaces do not allow you to use your phone and require you to put your phone in a locker. In that case, you must have a watch to check the time. If you have a smartwatch, that's great; you can bring it to read messages or control music, which is very convenient. That's the next item: a watch. Remember, whether it's a classic watch or a cheap Casio watch, you must have one.
Moving on to the next item. This is quite old because I've used it for almost 5 years in Australia, bringing it with me since 2019. It's a phone and tablet stand. For example, if you're alone, you come home tired, or if you're a student living alone, you sit down to eat at night. You'll definitely take out your phone to watch something. You need this to place your phone in front of you to watch. It's extremely convenient. This is extremely convenient.
This item is done. Moving on to the next item: wireless earphones. Wireless earphones are extremely useful. Students definitely have them, and those on working holidays do too. Listening to music is much more convenient than with wired earphones. I also have Xiaomi noise-canceling earphones that I use for listening to music at home. If you can afford it, you can buy both types: wireless earphones and these other ones. I forget the name, but they are quite good. These are just first-generation AirPods.
This item is done. Moving on to the next item: a power bank. Extremely important. It's crucial when you travel to Australia and live there. Airplanes don't have power banks, and there are no outlets to charge your devices. Airports have charging stations, but they are not always available. When you travel by subway or tram, there are no outlets to charge your devices. So, a power bank is extremely important. Please try to buy a power bank with at least 10,000 mAh to charge your devices at least twice. If it's less than 10,000 mAh, it will be insufficient; you'll only be able to charge it once.
The next item is done. Moving on to the next item: 502 glue. This glue is extremely important. For example, if something breaks that you need to fix, like if your glasses frame cracks, you can use this glue to fix it. For instance, if you're in a hurry and your glasses frame breaks, and you can't drive to get them fixed immediately, you can use this to temporarily fix them. Or you can use it to glue other plastic items. I bought two bottles.
Moving on to the next item. This is for both men and women. When you go to Australia, you'll want to take selfies. So, buy a selfie stick. When I flew from Vietnam recently, they didn't allow selfie sticks in carry-on luggage; they required them to be checked. So, if you have a selfie stick, please put it in your checked luggage.
Moving on to the next item. I've been using this for a long time. For example, when you're sick or tired after work, you take a pill. I usually buy one or two bottles to bring with me. Most pharmacies have them, but they can be a bit expensive. When you first arrive, you can buy two types like these to bring with you; they are very useful. I always have this type at home.
Moving on to the next item: cotton swabs for cleaning ears. I always use these. When I returned to Vietnam recently, I bought two packs to bring back. They are extremely convenient because I use them every day. But I always have something extra. Even though they are cotton swabs, I always have this box. What's in this box? It contains many things. Let me see. Cotton swabs are done.
Along with cotton swabs, I also have this tool. What is this for? Sometimes when you use cotton swabs, your ear still feels like something is stuck. You can use this ear-picking tool; it's extremely convenient for removing any foreign objects from your ears.
Next is what? Whether you are male or female, bring a razor. Bringing two would be even better. Please put this in your checked luggage. Remember, razors go in checked luggage.
The next item is sewing thread. You can buy a spool in Vietnam and use it for a long time. When you run out, you can buy more in Australia. I didn't bring any with me. Two spools of thread, one black and one white, and two needles. They are very convenient because in Australia, unlike in Vietnam, you can't just go to a tailor to get things sewn. You have to do it yourself. I have a white spool here. So, that's a total of 20 items.
Done with this. Moving on to the next item. It's a nail clipper. Extremely important, you must have one. Next is a nail file. After the nail file, what else? Sometimes you need to pluck white hairs, itchy hairs, or something that pricks your finger. You can use this to pluck them out.
Next is what? Band-aids. For when you cut your finger, you can use these. Or these are for bandaging wounds. I put them all in one box. Try to do as I do. This box is 5 years old. I put everything in this box, and when I need something, I take it out. So, this part is done.
Moving on to the next item. Deodorant. Whether you are male or female, at least bring one. You know its purpose. I'll move on quickly.
The next item is face masks. When you go to Australia, please try to buy at least one box of 50 face masks to bring with you. Because these can be used for a long time, their expiration dates are 2-3 years, so it doesn't matter much. You can keep them. When you are sick, going to work, or anything else, you must wear a mask. For example, if you go to work and are sick, you have to wear a mask to protect others from getting sick. This is not a law, but it's a cultural norm. So, remember to bring one box of face masks.
The next item is what? This is not a key. I'm talking about this. Try to find a tag to attach to your keys. I can put a piece of paper inside. You will have house keys, car keys, and all sorts of keys in Australia. So, you need to attach this to your keys. Why? To write a message like, "If found, please contact my phone number, bla bla bla." This will reduce the risk. For example, if you lose your keys, whoever finds them can call you, and you can get your keys back.
And while we're on the topic of keys, I'll mention this too. Always, when you go to Australia, find a SIM card ejector tool. It's extremely important because in Australia, you have to buy a SIM card, and you need a SIM ejector tool. I always keep one with my keys. So, that's the SIM ejector tool.
Next is what? Two screwdrivers. Since I don't have two of them, I'll take one small one. These two screwdrivers have different functions. One has a Phillips head, and the other has a flat head. Try to find one that is smaller than this one but larger than this one. This one is too big, and this one is too small. They have many uses. For example, for your pots and pans, if the handles become loose or fall off, you can tighten them with a screwdriver to secure them. Otherwise, you won't be able to cook. That's a simple example. Remember, two screwdrivers, one Phillips head and one flat head. Buy smaller ones. Buy ones that are smaller than this. This one is about 20 cm. Buy something smaller than this. This one is too small.
Done with this. Moving on to the next item. If you are a student or returning to Australia, or if it's your first time in Australia, I suggest you buy this to give as a gift to your friends or colleagues. It's very cute. The price is okay, and its function is... it's a keychain. It symbolizes the lotus flower, has many colors, and has "Vietnam" written on it. This is optional.
The next item is what? Band-aids. No matter who you are, I sincerely recommend buying a box of band-aids. They are extremely useful. You know their purpose. If you have a lot, buy two or three more boxes, but remember to choose ones with a long expiration date.
The next item is a water bottle. Actually, it's a thermos. If you are in a cold region, you will bring warm water. If you are in a hot region, you will bring cold water. Bring this with you and keep it in your carry-on luggage. When you go through customs, please empty the water so the bottle is empty. Then you can bring it through customs. After that, at the airport, you can fill it with water and drink it. Use it like that. Buy one that is insulated to keep the temperature for a long time. That's the water bottle.
Moving on to the next item. Generally, whether it's summer or winter, try to buy sunglasses in Vietnam to save money. Wear sunglasses because it's very sunny in Australia. Remember to buy sunglasses.
Moving on to the next item. Find a small bag. Women probably have many small bags, but men might not. Because in Australia, you will have both coins and bills. When you use cash, they will give you many small coins. You need a bag to put them in. So, get a bag to store your coins.
Moving on to the next item. Whether you are male or female, you must buy a cap. I sincerely recommend buying a black cap. Why? Because I wear it to work. They require black ones. So, I also recommend that you try to buy a black one. You can use it in many workplaces. For example, if you work in a fast-food restaurant, they might require you to wear a cap, and they will accept a black one. They won't accept white ones. So, buy a black one.
The next item is what? Try to buy a folder like this, or a plastic one. The point is, it's a folder to put all your important documents in. When you come to Australia, keep them in your carry-on luggage. For example, your visa, passport photos, etc. Any important documents that are larger than a credit card, put them in this folder to keep them flat. That is, they need to be kept flat to stay straight. If you put them in a bag or a suitcase, they might get crumpled or torn. So, that's the next item.
Moving on to the next item. Socks. Here are three different types of socks, and they all have different uses. I chose them to explain to you. These are thin socks for those in hot regions. These are thicker socks for those in cold regions. And these are long socks. Please buy two pairs of thin socks, two pairs of thick socks, and two pairs of short socks, and two pairs of long socks. In Australia, there are many different climate zones: cold and hot. I don't know which region you will go to, and you will travel between different regions. So, try to have different types of socks for school or work; they are extremely convenient. Remember to buy two pairs of these, two or four pairs of these, and two pairs of these. Remember to buy different types. Black is even better.
Socks are done. Now, let's move on to what. A belt. I just bought this recently. I bought a black belt. Why? Because for school, they require black. So, I also recommend that you try to buy a black belt. For work, school, or any part-time job, most places in Australia require a black belt. They don't accept gray ones either. Try to get a black one, completely black.
Moving on to the next item. A hairdryer. In Australia, accommodation or shared housing will never provide you with a personal hairdryer. So, you must try to buy one. This one is quite large. Try to buy a small one from Panasonic or Philips. They are very small, foldable, and weigh around 300 grams. I have one, and it's extremely convenient. Both men and women should try to buy one. That's the hairdryer.
Moving on to the next item. Clothes hangers. Why buy clothes hangers? I have two types here: plastic hangers and aluminum hangers. After using both types, I found that you should try to bring five aluminum hangers. Bring them just in case. Because when you move into a house, you might already have hangers, but there will never be enough. Aluminum hangers are stronger and more convenient. Plastic hangers will break after a while from hanging clothes and such. So, it's better to invest and bring five to ten aluminum hangers, depending on your luggage allowance. That's done.
Moving on to the next item. When you go to Australia, whether you are a student or on a working holiday, you will bring food for lunch. So, try not to bring stainless steel containers. Don't buy lunchboxes or thermoses made of stainless steel. Because in Australia, you cannot use a microwave with stainless steel. They use microwaves for heating. It's not very common in Vietnam, but it's everywhere in Australia. So, I suggest you buy this type. It's made of plastic, and the lid is made of plastic. It's extremely convenient. This one has two compartments. Some have three compartments. When I returned to Vietnam recently, I bought a three-compartment one for my sister. They sell them in supermarkets. Try to buy this. Although it's a bit heavy, it's very good quality and hygienic.
Besides that, of course, in Vietnam, you must have chopsticks. Try to bring at least two pairs of chopsticks. Why? If one pair breaks, you have a spare. Also, in the kitchen, you should definitely buy this. It's extremely convenient. You will use it a lot for peeling. It's very convenient.
So, that's 1, 2, 3, 4 items. I'll mention them all at once. Let me see if there's anything else. Ah, yes. Eye drops. If you have myopia, you should definitely bring a bottle of eye drops. Because your eyes get very dry on the plane. If you want to protect your eyes and don't have myopia, you should still buy a bottle of eye drops.
And the next item is what? Try to buy a small pair of scissors. Not too big, like this, but not too small either. Buy a medium-sized pair. Buy a pair of scissors. They are very useful in Australia.
