[Music] Mars is the warrior principle. This is the planet that drives us forward, that initiates things. Mars is the instinctual door we enter life through. This is the archetype of the defender and winner.
Mars on the birth chart, as well, where you will start things, go after things, how you satisfy your desires that are defined by Venus. Venus is what we want, and Mars is how we get it. Our desire and the way we put ourselves into motion to satisfy that desire can be two different styles if Venus and Mars are in different signs. If these two planets are in hard aspect, then we can feel frustrated because we'll act in ways that prevent us from getting what we want. If Venus and Mars relate to each other well, then we find it's easy to act out in ways that get our desires met.
Mars is largely about what are we willing to do to survive? How do we ensure our physical place in the world? And the sign Mars is in is going to show that. Mars is the initiator, so it's helpful to imagine him as the ignition of a vehicle and the motor that keeps that vehicle in motion. Mars is how we start and maintain motion, and the sign Mars is in shows the style of that. So, how do we commence things in life? What do we do to keep going? Mars really is going to show this.
Mars is the cause in the birth chart. He causes things to start, so he is the instigator. Mars in hard aspect to outer planets and other planets can show how and what we instigate can be a source of outer conflict. But if Mars works well with other planets, he can be a force that instigates without causing conflict.
So, Mars is a selfish archetype within ourselves. It's part of the personality that is most concerned with self-preservation. The reason for Mars is to ensure one's survival. He ignites. It's the ignition we require to propel ourselves towards self-actualization. Urge is also a good word to describe Mars. Mars is the urge to participate, the urge to move toward our potential.
Mars is the counterpart to the principle that Venus represents, the need to acquire. Venus places of value on an object and/or person in an attempt to give inner meaning to life, and then Mars acts to attain that meaning and externalizes it. Mars is the externalization of the Sun's core life energy. And Mars is not a very personal planet. It's considered a social planet with personal mythology.
Mars is how we will use our initiative energy, the igniter in us, the part of us that responds immediately to enter impulses. How we use this energy to socially cooperate to get what we want. What we want does not exist in a vacuum. Mars is our personalized will serving the solar principle, as all the planets do. The Sun's life-giving rays grow the initial ego that is Mars, the way that we go after we want, as a toddler would, and learn to cooperate in ways that ensure we'd get our toy.
