The Worst Mistake In Human History

At first, it looked like a miracle. Roughly 12,000 years ago, in scattered pockets across the world, something changed. For some reason, people began to settle. Weirdly enough, they planted seeds. They even started taming animals. And just like that, agriculture and farming were born. This changed a whole lot of things in the daily lives of our early homo sapiens ancestors. Grain meant surplus, surplus meant stability, and stability meant growth. The world started to fill with villages to exploit the surrounding lands. The villages became towns, and from towns to cities. And for the first time in human history, a child could be born in the same place their grandparents died in.

That's what is called today the Neolithic Revolution, the very beginning of civilization as we know it, or at least our sedentary lifestyle. But in what seemed to be an overall consensus of how great of a step that was for humanity, someone decided to question it more than questioning it. Actually, he took the opposite stance. In May 1987, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond wrote an article published in Discovery magazine that rattled the field. The title: "The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race." That's what he decided to call farming. It sounded absurd. How could the very foundation of modern life be a mistake? Because from our perspective, we have it so good right now compared to our ancestors.

The hunter-gatherer life, even though it is kind of idealized today, really was harsh. Traveling long distances to find just enough to feed, scavenge what could be found, settle in temporary spaces, not secured as much as a regular settlement. In short, low food, highly demanding in energy, and low sense of security. And yet, evidence was piling up. Evidence that the first farmers worked harder, ate worse, lived sicker, and died younger than the foragers they replaced. That with grain came inequality and pests. With animals came disease, and with villages and territory came war. So, what exactly did we trade away for that extra food? Why did humans adopt a way of life that made so many things worse? Did we seize control of nature or just chain ourselves to it? And if this revolution was such a gift, why does it feel so hard to put down? If farming was such a breakthrough, apparently our bodies never got the memo.

For decades now, bioarchaeologists have been reading the story of agriculture not in myth or monument, but in bone. And the forensics do not celebrate the Neolithic Revolution in the same way. They grieve it. Across sites in Europe, the Near East, Africa, and South Asia, human remains from both pre-agricultural and early agricultural layers tell a clear repeating story. In all geographical areas, cultures, and societies it developed in, the pattern is grim. Farming didn't improve health. Quite the opposite. It damaged it, and badly at that.

Let's start with stature. A cross-regional data set compiled by Muert et al. in the 2011 study named *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* compared over 11,000 skeletal remains. They found that in nearly every region, the average adult height declined following the adoption of agriculture. In some Anatolian and Levantine populations, men lost up to 6 in, about 15 cm in height, and women lost 5 in, around 13 cm. In China, early rice farmers were notably shorter than their foraging predecessors. This holds true from Nubia to the Indus Valley. We all know that height is kind of a proxy for childhood nutrition and stress. So if these people ended up shorter than their ancestors, it's definitely because of genetics. The causes were found in their environment. They were probably growing up underfed and stressed. Actually, more than just underfed, closer to malnourishment in specific visible ways.

If you examine the skulls of these proto-farmers, you'll often find porous lesions on the cranial vault and inside the eye sockets. These are called cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis. These are classical markers of iron deficiency anemia. In early Neolithic communities, particularly in places like Çatalhöyük and Abu Hureyra, these lesions are present in up to 60% of individuals. Some skeletons show signs of multiple overlapping nutritional diseases. All these signs are totally absent from older hunter-gatherer remains. Their teeth were also affected. Dental health collapses in the wake of agriculture. Hunter-gatherers usually have worn but relatively clean teeth with low to no cavities. Their diets were fibrous, varied in most cases, very low in sugar. Early farmers, on the other hand, ate soft, sticky carbohydrates, especially cereals, which was one of their main sources of calories and one of the first types of grain they learned to grow. Results were telling: a spike in dental caries, enamel hypoplasia, which is a sign of childhood stress that appears on teeth, and finally periodontal disease. At the site of Ganj Dareh in Iran, roughly 10,000 years old, over 80% of adult skeletons showed signs of dental pathology. In Neolithic Nubia, excavations found that nearly every adult molar was decayed or abscessed. Some skulls have visible holes where tooth infections burrowed through the jawbone—most probably rotten all the way to the bone. Today, we don't die from these. Well, at least not usually. But back then this was deadly. Just for reference, back to a day where we had evolved dentistry like 20th-century methods, people like Hugo Boss, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or even as recent as 2023, the NFL player Mike Williams who used to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers like 2 years ago. So now imagine the state of the mouth of these early farmers.

But it wasn't stopping at all the already quite crippling afflictions we've stated previously. There's more because these are all indirect consequences. The more direct ones are the sufferings from labor. The shift to repetitive, labor-intensive farming left marks across the entire skeleton. Inhabitants of Çatalhöyük show advanced degenerative joint disease in the spine, knees, and ankles. Even in young adults, probably spending hours per day bending over to plant, cut, and finally harvest the cereals wasn't a good thing for your body. But the work isn't quite finished yet, and their big toes are showing it. It's often twisted, possibly from kneeling during hours of grinding grain with stone tools. Bones in their forearms show enopathies, signs of muscle tearing from repetitive strain. This was everything but leisure gardening. This was physical punishment on a dietary budget of nutrient-deficient porridge.

And all of this raises an even deeper contradiction. Farming was supposed to free us from hunger, from scarcity, from the constant motion of the hunt. But when we look at the actual people who made that transition, what we see isn't freedom. We see stunted children, inflamed jaws, collapsing vertebrae. We see disease and decline generation after generation. So the question isn't why did we farm? It's how long did it take to forget what we left behind? Why were people not going back to their previous lifestyles that left them in much better conditions? [Music]

So why didn't we go back? If life got worse, if we shrank, sickened, or suffered, why didn't people abandon farming and return to the forager life that had sustained them for hundreds of thousands of years? Because by the time the damage was clear, it was already too late. Farming didn't just change how we lived, it changed what was required to live. The first villages produced just enough food to support their growing numbers. More children meant more hands in the field, which meant more mouths to feed, which meant even more land to work. And as populations grew, the forager lifestyle became mathematically impossible to sustain. There were too many people and not enough wild land left to roam. The old way was no longer an option, not because it stopped working, but because the system had outgrown it. To go back would also mean to sacrifice a part of the community. The most fragile ones probably wouldn't be able to find food anymore. So elders, women, and children would be deeply affected by such a change.

And in addition to that, from the spaces we'd carved from the land, tight, crowded, and immobile, something else began to grow: disease. And not your tiny little cold. Before agriculture, human groups were small and mobile. They moved with the seasons, followed game, left their waste behind, and rarely stayed anywhere long enough for pathogens to thrive. But with sedentary life, things became different. Now people lived next to their trash. They started to sleep in rooms with animals because they had nowhere to put them in. They drank from the same wells they washed in. The population density spiked, and with it so did infection. Villages became the perfect breeding grounds for viruses and bacteria. In a landmark 2007 Nature study, Wolf, Dunovan, and Diamond traced the origins of the world's most devastating diseases to this very moment, the Neolithic transition. Measles from cattle, tuberculosis from goats, smallpox from camels, influenza from pigs and ducks. These weren't mutations happening at random. They were the inevitable result of long-term proximity with these animals. And the jump from animal to human wasn't even the most dangerous part. The real danger came afterwards. Because once a pathogen enters a new host species, especially one that lives in large, dense, immobile groups, it doesn't stop evolving. It now can spread to a ton of individuals. It adapts. It learns to spread faster, hide longer, kill less quickly, so it can infect more people. In evolutionary terms, early human settlements were the ideal training ground. Pretty much what you'd learn to do playing a game of Plague Inc.

The more we settled, the smarter the microbes got. Well, smart doesn't really apply to them, but they evolve in a way that we as humans would qualify as smart if our goal was just to spread, which it is. Like for most species, the goal is to reproduce and increase in numbers. This applied to all wild animals and to us as well. No matter the adaptation, the strategy is always a means to increase headcounts, increase survival rates, and leave as many offspring as possible behind. This also applied to diseases like pertussis (aka whooping cough) and typhoid fever, which only make sense in populations of a certain size. Below a threshold of around 200,000 people, they die out. But as farming pushed us toward larger and more connected settlements, we passed that threshold. These pathogens weren't just surviving. They were becoming endemic. Another 2010 study in The Lancet called this shift the first epidemiologic transition. It marked the point where most humans stopped dying of trauma, exposure, or old age (even if old back then meant 22 years old). From that point on, they started dying of chronic malnutrition, infection, and inflammatory disease. Signs of respiratory illness, sinus infections, and even tuberculosis are visible in skulls from the early Neolithic. Some show infected jaw abscesses so severe that the bone literally disintegrated. In the long list of things agriculture gave us, we also have to include pneumonia, leprosy, dysentery, hepatitis, plague. And again, it wasn't just biology. It came from the very structure of these new sedentary societies. The grain storage that made winter survivable also attracted rodents who seek warmth, shelter, and food. Rodents carried fleas. Fleas carried Yersinia pestis, the bacteria that would ignite the Black Death more than 13,000 years later. The same pathways that moved food moved disease. But even as health declined, even as epidemics came in waves, people didn't or couldn't return to the old ways; the system they'd built had no reverse gear. Farming was now a treadmill. Either you speed up or you step off and you starve. So, no, we didn't go back because by the time we realized what we'd done, we were already too many to stop, and the germs were already home. Farming didn't just grow food and germs. One thing also came along with it: power. Before agriculture, there was little reason or room for anyone to rise far above anyone else. First of all, the groups were small. The rise was quite limited. But not anymore. Second, in most hunter-gatherer societies, food was perishable, land was shared, and wealth didn't accumulate. Except for wintertime, you couldn't keep food for long periods of time, and preservation techniques were not a thing yet. So, hoarding wasn't just impractical. It was socially punished. Egalitarianism wasn't ideology, it was a strategy. But grains changed the rules. Wheat, millet, barley—these were storable calories. And the moment food could be stored, it could be owned, tracked, guarded, taken. Suddenly, for the first time in human history, people could produce more than they consumed. And from that surplus, a new kind of human structure emerged: hierarchy. Bioarchaeologist Peter Bogucki, in his work on prehistoric inequality, argued that this wasn't just a side effect of farming. It was baked into its logic. When some people control more food, more land, more livestock, they can leverage that surplus into labor, favors, marriages, and eventually into law. The first elites didn't need divine rights, intelligence, or armies. They just needed storage and patience.

The archaeological record backs this up. In Varna, a 6,500-year-old cemetery in what is now Bulgaria, we find some of the earliest evidence of radical wealth inequality. One man was buried with over 1,000 gold items, more than all other graves combined. His bones show no signs of labor. He didn't grow that wealth. He extracted it from the work of others who most probably paid him for food. That or culture made him sort of a demigod. But nothing suggests that. In Mesopotamia, at sites like Tell Brak and Uruk, the pattern continues. Around 5,000 years ago, we begin to see centralized storage complexes, graineries, warehouses, even pro-administrative buildings alongside the emergence of clay tokens used for inventory and tribute. This is the birth of one of the most exciting activities of human history: accounting. This contributed to the rise of bureaucracy and early forms of tax collection. This takes place before people knew writing, long before coinage, and millennia before capitalism. Because once food can be measured, someone will measure it. People will compare how much this guy and this guy have. Others will try to think of a way to take their cut. Women would look for the one who could ensure stability for them and their children, and so on. This wasn't a glitch in the system. This was the system. Agriculture made it possible to feed more people, but that didn't mean everyone ate equally. In fact, the opposite often happened. The more food there was, the more unequal its distribution became.

In 2011, Jean-Pierre Bocquet-Appel published a review in Science outlining the Neolithic demographic transition, a moment when human population suddenly spiked across early farming zones. That growth didn't just strain resources, it demanded coordination. Who gets land? Who organizes labor? Who defends the stores? The answer increasingly was the same: whoever already had the most. From surplus came specialization. From specialization came stratification. And from stratification came rule. This was the beginning of inheritance, property, and permanent class. Because now, for the first time, you could be born poor—not unlucky, not injured, but structurally, generationally poor by design because, well, the stakes were a bit flawed then. Social mobility wasn't really part of the daily concerns of people. First, find food. You were born and inherited the status of whoever raised you, usually your parents, perform the same jobs, and this cycle pursued everybody for generations. Agriculture didn't invent oppression, but it gave it a foundation, a reason, and a warehouse to guard. And once someone had more, they needed to protect it to make sure they'd still have more at the end of the day. But that's where chapter 5 begins. For now, here's what matters: The invention of farming didn't just change the structure of societies, how we lived, how we ate, how healthy we lived. It changed who we were allowed to become. Once there was something to guard, there was something to take. And what comes more naturally to people who have nothing? The envy to take from those who have something. As food became property and land became lines on a map, violence began to scale. Not just conflict, not just murder, but war. War as policy, war as structure, war as survival. In small forager bands, violence certainly existed, but it was sporadic and personal, fueled by disputes, not empires. Most conflicts could be avoided. If tensions rose, people moved. Land wasn't owned. Resources weren't fixed. Mobility was an escape valve. Farming sealed that valve shut. You can't walk away from your fields. You can't pick up your granary and flee. So when scarcity came, or envy, or drought, people didn't leave, they fought. And the archaeology leaves no doubt. At Jebel Sahaba along the Nile Valley, a 13,000-year-old cemetery revealed 61 bodies, nearly all with signs of violent trauma. At least 45% had embedded stone projectile points, some with more than a dozen. Many show defensive wounds on arms and hands, suggesting ambush or close combat. Several were buried in overlapping layers, indicating repeated attacks over time, not a single event. This is the oldest known evidence of organized group-level violence. And it appears right on the cusp of the forager-farmer transition. Coincidence? Maybe not. Because this didn't only happen in one geographical area, as you might have guessed already.

Fast forward 6,000 years to Talheim, Germany, where archaeologists uncovered a mass grave dated to about 5,000 B.C.E. Inside were 34 bodies: 16 adults, nine children, and nine infants. Most had suffered massive blunt force trauma to the skull, likely from stone axes. Notably, several skulls had multiple identical wounds, suggesting not just violence, but systematic, deliberate execution. Even more unsettling is what's missing: young adult women. They weren't in the grave. They weren't among the dead. Most likely, they were taken. Just 110 km away, at Schönwetter, another massacre site was found dating to roughly the same period. This one held 26 bodies with signs of extreme overkill. Fractures in the legs and pelvises of victims suggested they were disabled or tortured before death. It's not random violence. It's targeted, strategic, and cruel. And it's not isolated. A 2016 study published in Nature analyzing dozens of early Neolithic massacre sites across Europe found that mass violence increased significantly with the expansion of farming cultures, particularly the Linearbandkeramik culture between 5,500 and 4,500 B.C.E. These weren't border skirmishes. These were entire communities wiped out—women and children included—over land, crops, or livestock.

Why the escalation? Because, as Jean-Pierre Bocquet-Appel showed in his demographic transition model, agriculture caused population to boom by 400 to 600% in just a few generations. But farmland doesn't scale as easily as people do. Every new mouth needed food, every harvest needed protection, and every dry season sharpened the tension between neighbors. Anthropologist Lawrence Keeley, writing in *War Before Civilization* in 1996, estimated that in early farming societies, up to 25% of male adults may have died from combat-related injuries, a rate far exceeding that of many modern wars. By contrast, most ethnographic foraging groups today report violent death rates below 1%. And this wasn't just defense. With surplus came offense: raiding for grain, seizing livestock, kidnapping labor, destroying rivals' fields before harvest. This looks nothing like instinct. This is what strategy looks like. The walls of Jericho, dating to 8,000 B.C.E., stand 3.6–6 m tall and include a 2 m thick stone base. A wall doesn't need to be that high to stop animals or wind. But humans, on the other hand, fortified towns appear across the Near East and Balkans by 6,000 B.C.E., complete with watchtowers, ditches, and gates. War wasn't an event. It was a design principle. And populations weren't just defending themselves. In Neolithic Anatolia, at Çatalhöyük, a structure known as the "skull building" was uncovered, containing human remains separated from their bodies, possibly displayed or ritualized. One adjacent room had concentrated traces of human blood. Whether for justice, sacrifice, or intimidation, the message was the same: fear was now policy. This is where war changed. Because once violence became a mechanism for controlling resources, borders, and people, it doesn't end when the enemy falls. It ends when their children do. Agriculture gave us food security, but it also gave us a reason to kill, and to keep killing and oppressing. By the time empires rise, war is no longer the exception. It's the background hum of civilization. [Music]

By the time the wars began, the walls were already built in people's heads. Not every barrier is made of stone. Some are passed down in names, in debts, in duties you didn't choose. You weren't just born into a settlement. You were born into a role. Because the true genius of the agricultural system wasn't just in feeding more people. It was in keeping them in place. The fields you worked, the house you lived in, the tools you used—these were no longer just your reality. They were your children's, too. And their children's after them. By design. By the time land became inheritable, so did status. So did work. So did power. What started as practical—"This is my family's field"—became structural—"This is your place. Stay in it." This wasn't a conscious conspiracy. It was a system that grew from grain, from surplus, from counting. Once things could be measured, they could be taxed. Once they could be taxed, someone needed to collect, and someone else needed to pay. And to keep that machine running, you had to make the system feel natural, permanent, sacred. That's where law comes in. The Code of Hammurabi, chiseled into basalt around 1750 B.C.E., isn't just the first piece of legal code. It doesn't just regulate theft or murder. It defines a world where different people hold different value. The code is divided into three different parts: the prologue, where Hammurabi declares himself chosen by the gods, particularly Marduk, to bring justice, destroy evil, and protect the weak. He frames himself as a shepherd and protector. Then comes the body of the text, the laws themselves, with no less than 282 of them covering wide cases of applications like…

Contracts, family, labor, trade, slavery, theft, assault, agriculture, or even sexual conduct. Finally comes the epilogue. This is the most telling part as of social mobility because Hammurabi really didn't want his code to be changed. So much so that he made a warning to future rulers not to alter or ignore the laws, with divine punishment promised to any king who does. And if you are wondering what these laws were like, here are a few simple and most famous ones.

Same prejudice, but different status. Law 196: If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out. That's Lex Talionus, or the common saying, an eye for an eye. Law 198: If he puts out the eye of a commoner, he shall pay one minina of silver. That's still assault on a person, but not quite like a nobleman. Law 199: If he put out the eye of a slave, he shall pay half his value. Slaves were not considered as persons. More like casualties and property damage you should compensate the owner for, not the slave.

The code of Hammurabi is not equal justice. It's a system that codifies inequality based on class, gender, and status. It's not about eliminating violence or injustice. It's about containing and organizing it to protect the powerful, maintain order, and make social roles predictable and enforceable. It's not just a legal code; it's a blueprint for hierarchy. This was no longer survival; this was philosophy with a sword behind it.

And it wasn't just Mesopotamia. In Egypt, tombs were arranged by rank, not kinship. In the Indus Valley, water access and street planning followed caste-like segmentation. In Neolithic China, even children's skeletons show malnutrition and stress markers correlated with their burial goods. Before they could walk, their life trajectory was already marked. In 2017, a study in Nature Communications analyzing Bronze Age cemeteries confirmed this. Wealth, privilege, and status were being passed genetically. Elite male lines dominated burials, property, and ritual. The rich stayed rich. The rest stayed buried under silence.

And through it all, the idea calcified. Some people were born to rule. Others were born to obey. Farming didn't invent domination, but it made it scalable. And once inequality looked like tradition, like fate, it no longer needed chains. The chains were in people's minds. The oppressed no longer even considered rebelling because that was just considered fate, the God's will, or whatever you want to call it. And to ensure there never could be an attempt, it needed stories. And stories were everywhere: in prayers, in contracts, in lullabies. Little by little, hierarchy became invisible. Not because it vanished, but because it became normal. So no, we didn't go back because going back meant breaking the only rules we'd ever been taught. The fields, the law, the name you carried, the cage disguised as order instilled in most societies. [Music]

But for all its flaws, farming worked. It fed more people than foraging ever could. It built cities, temples, mathematics, writing. It gave rise to astronomy, irrigation, taxation, and trade. Civilization. Our civilization stands on the skeleton of wheat and many of our dead ancestors, for us to live better lives than they could ever imagine. But that skeleton was brittle because the agricultural world was not only more unequal, it was more vulnerable. We think of farming as a stable foundation. It wasn't. It was a tightrope, one that stretched over droughts, plagues, failed harvests, and fragile trade routes. The more we depended on one crop, one river, one growing season, the more we bet everything on nothing going wrong. And things went wrong constantly.

In ancient Mesopotamia, over-irrigation caused salt to rise into the soil, killing fertility. At first, farmers adapted by switching from wheat to barley, which tolerates more salt. But eventually, even barley yields collapsed. According to a 1958 study by Jacobson and Adams in Science, wheat yields in summer declined by over 50%, contributing to the fall of iconic cities like Ur and Larsa. The region that once birthed writing and empire slowly turned into uninhabitable dust.

In the Indus Valley, the collapse wasn't military; it was environmental. Around 2100 B.C.E., changing monsoon patterns disrupted the agricultural calendar. Crops failed, people left. A 2003 study by Staubwasser et al., published in Geophysical Research Letters, linked the decline of Harappan cities to a sudden prolonged drought during the so-called 4.2 kiloyear event, a climate anomaly that hit nearly every early civilization hard.

In ancient Egypt, the story was no different. The Nile's flood was predictable until it wasn't. When it failed, so did everything else. Records describe starvation, rebellion, and dynasties crumbling under the weight of famine. Pharaohs lost legitimacy when graineries emptied. The divine order was only as strong as the next harvest. Even the Maya, brilliant as they were, couldn't outrun the rain. In the 9th century C.E., a series of mega-droughts crippled maize production. Cities were abandoned. Populations plummeted. According to research by Douglas Kennett and colleagues in Science, published in 2012, this environmental collapse was tightly correlated with the disintegration of Maya political centers.

The irony was cruel. The system that let us build civilizations was the same one that made them so easy to break. Hunter-gatherers didn't have much, but they were resilient. If the game moved, they moved. If plants failed, they adapted. Farmers couldn't. Their lives were pinned to the soil. And soil, it turns out, has limits. Modern archaeology is increasingly clear on this. Most early complex societies collapsed not from invasion, but from exhaustion, ecological overshoot, depleted topsoil, deforestation, social tension, fragile interdependence. As Joseph Tainter wrote in The Collapse of Complex Societies back in 1988, "The very complexity that made these civilizations powerful also made them incredibly brittle." Farming gave us more, but it also left us no margin for error. And yet, we kept going. Each time a society collapsed, another picked up the plow. Each time a city fell, another rose with stronger walls, deeper fields, sharper swords. Because even though the system was brutal, it showed countless times that it worked. At least till [__] goes haywire. It fed our children. It gave some dreams and hope. It gave the illusion of control. But that illusion came at a cost. You worked harder, lived sicker, died younger, and couldn't go anywhere else. You obeyed laws carved in stone. You paid tribute to men with storage rooms. And you thanked the gods for the privilege of getting to eat today and maybe tomorrow. [Music]

12,000 years ago, our ancestors made a deal. No one carved it into stone. No one signed it. But we've honored it ever since. The deal was simple: Give up freedom. Get security. Stay in one place, plant your field, obey the elders, respect the line, feed the system, and in return, you'll eat. Maybe not much, maybe not fairly, but you'll survive. You'll raise your children in the same place your parents died. You'll work harder than your body should allow, and you'll convince yourself it was worth it because now you're part of something bigger. That's the story we told. That's the story we still tell. Despite farmers being a way smaller part of the global population, farming was progress. Cities were destiny. Complexity means success. But what if we were wrong? What if the Neolithic Revolution wasn't the beginning of a golden age, but the start of a beautiful trap? One that gave us art, but also authority. That gave us writing, but also taxes. That gave us order, but required obedience.

We imagine civilization as a ladder we climbed. But maybe it's a web we fell into. Every strand reinforced by food, ritual, bureaucracy, violence, and the more threads we added, the harder it became to move, let alone escape. We didn't choose this system like you choose dinner or a song. We slowly drifted into it, one field at a time. And by the time we realized what we'd traded, the deal was already generational. So, no, we didn't go back because we couldn't. There were too many of us. We had forgotten how. And somewhere deep down, we were afraid of what lay outside the fences.

But here's the thing. The story isn't over. We still live on the bones of that ancient bargain.
