So yeah, I had to I had to deal with a lot of people giving giving stuff away, you know, pretty pretty much that's what the whole market's dealing with kind of to an extent. I mean, we got to be honest. Um,

>> But that said, it was so busy that everyone's just kicking ass,

>> at the end of the day. So, uh, yeah, got to compete and, uh, gota got to adjust to what's happening out there, pretty much.

>> So, I was into it from actually 2008. I had bought a few ball pythons, albinos, and stuff like that.

>> Then, uh my daughter came into the picture and my ex-wife was like, "No more snakes. You're done with the snakes."

>> So, got rid of all got rid of my little collection.

>> 2012 comes around. I'm getting divorced. [ __ ] it. I'm getting snakes.

>> There you go.

>> So, I go I pick up uh you know, nonsense. Nothing crazy. Fire spiders and lessers cuz everything's super expensive at that time, you know.

>> Yeah.

>> And then uh I'm like, "All right, I'm going to step it up a little bit." And um that's when I hit up Justin and I bought a male highway for $8,000. And then for a male highway, just a baby male highway. And then, you know, then bananas started coming into the scene. So, I went and I dropped 20k in a banana. And then I dro started dropping some crazy, you know, crazy money in some animals. Um, you know, I lost some money here and there, but

>> what happened?

>> You know, I lost money with the bananas. You know,

>> I think I paid 20 grand for a banana and the next year they were like four, three,

>> three, three, four, three,000.

>> Yeah.

>> But did you make enough to make it back though? Like did you like make enough bananas?

>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I definitely, you know, I I made a couple bucks back, but Okay. I probably made my initial investment back, which is was fine, you know, but I didn't make any money.

>> But the whole like hitting a home run on that project, it was was a bust for you because you you you just missed it. If you were maybe two years before it' have been different.

>> Exactly. Yeah.

>> And guys, for everyone in watching and in the chat, if you adjust that 20k for inflation back then, it's a lot more money.

>> Way more. 100%. I was taking out pension loans and all types of things there.

>> Yeah, that 20k back then is a lot more than it is now.

They did a documentary with Brock Wagner who talks about the strain that the strain it had on his relationship like refinancing their home, taking a loan out on their home. And this was crazy [ __ ] back then, bro. But that's what people were doing. Uh people still do that now, which I think is [ __ ] God bless. But you know back then dude that's how much people believed in it, you know

It was banana pied, it was the the those first initial ones that buy me in. But when I saw like the the potentials, I looked at GHI stuff and then I saw highway [ __ ] um highway freeway stuff and I was like, "This is it." Like when I saw Highway Freeway stuff, dude, this was 2017. I was like, "This is what I want to work with." And even then, they were still like 1,200 bucks or 1,500. They were still pretty like way out of my league. Like I wasn't I came into the game super broke trying to change my life. And I had no money. Like I legit had no money. So, a snake like that was just out of my reach. But in my head, I'm like, "Dude, that's that's [ __ ] amazing, you know?" So, I'm I'm curious. When you got that snake from Justin, what'd you do with it? Like, what what did you end up breeding with it? What what was back then? What' you do with it?

>> So, I went I bought I had yellow bellies, female yellow bellies.

>> Nice.

>> My idea was take that highway, throw it to five female yellow bellies,

>> and make some more highways, you know, some combo highways. Try and make some money back.

>> And how did I How did ivories do back then? They were okay. I mean, they're all white, but people wanted the bells at that time. They didn't want the ivories. Really?

>> Got it.

>> So, and is that mainly because of the the eyes, like the the the it was the blue eyes, and ivories were the like the black eyes, right?

>> Yeah. And the ivories were a little dirtier, you know?

>> Yeah. They weren't they weren't pure white. Like they had they had some blemishes on them.

>> Yeah.

>> Yeah. Ivies ivories get really nice as adults, but Yeah. As babies, they're ugly ducklings.

>> Yeah. We all we all moved on from ivories pretty fast.

>> Yeah.

>> I mean, they were good for the times though, you know.

>> Yeah. And and and also I remember dude my first my first snake to get into the highway project was an ivory because I was like I need an ivory for this. I had a gravel something and I was like and when I found out gravel yellow belly is what makes my, you know, what I was looking for the highways. That's and mind you, I think back then somebody wanted to sell me a group of ivories and I almost did. They they wanted to sell me three ivories for like 900 bucks and I was like, what a steal, like an idiot. A good thing I didn't do it, dude. Um, but anyway, so, yeah. Okay, so when did things progress, you know, because one of the things we're going to and I think people should pay attention to this tonight, but if you've been here since 2012, you've been a part of a lot of changes, bro. Like one of the things people lack in this game today is the ability to adapt. They don't know how to [ __ ] switch it up, right? You've obviously done that a lot, bro. um without changing who you are, right? So, let's let's talk about like how you like progressed from dropping 9K on the highway and then like who who put you on a clown like how did you how did you get heads up about the recessive [ __ ] coming and and then what was the first big recessive project you dropped bills on and stuff like that.

>> So, and then I uh from the highways and bananas, I started just dabbling. I tried to make some highway pie balls.

>> Okay.

>> Started breeding it to yellow belly pies, making some highway, you know, highway head pies and then holding stuff back and then making eventually highway pies and freeways. And I did all that stuff. But then I started thinking about it and I was like, you know what, the recesses, that's where it's at because it takes longer to get to where you want to go, holds, you know, retains value better. So, I started buying female clowns. I bought like in one year like 50 baby female clowns when they were going for like $800 a pop, you know, and then um I just raised them all up and then started throwing all types of jeans into them and then I started buying I got I got into puzzle, I think I got into puzzles like in 2016 when they first came out too, you know.

>> So like even now to this day, I have 75 female puzzles just sitting in tubs, adult.

>> Wow.

>> You know, like and then and then you I don't even I didn't even breed a lot of them this year. Like a lot of them just sitting there. And now back in the day, I was pretty much half and half, half recessive, half Kodom.

>> Now I'm probably

>> 95% recessive.

>> But But you still have all the ingredients though, like you you still have like because looking at your page,

>> your [ __ ] has a lot of color. Like you have a lot of incomplete dominance that are helping the recessive projects, it seems like.

>> Yeah, you have to. And then, you know, and I always drop like probably I drop like 40k a year back into the game just to,

>> you know, you got to refresh because you're always gonna be left behind, you know, like I, you know, like I'm into Tornado, I'm into Bambino, I'm into Cosmos, like you gotta or all

>> and that's all that's

>> Yeah, that's all big deep pocket [ __ ] that you have to know, which is important. The thing about the ball python game, it seems like a comfortable place to be, but it's not. It's [ __ ] dude, you always have to keep going. It's it's it's an insane marathon, but it almost looks like

>> like, oh my god, I want to be a ball python breeder where I could get to that point where I don't have to worry about [ __ ] No, there's never a What are you talking about? Like, you always have to keep putting money in. There's always a some place in the market that needs to be adjusted, which me and Milo talk about that all the time. You got to adjust, but you got to know when to adjust. Some people, again, not everyone takes this as serious as others, but the ones who do and the ones who are paying attention are always able to see the adjustments that are needed to be made before like two years later when you're like just [ __ ] like, "Oh man, I didn't see that coming." You know? Go ahead, Biggie.

>> Hey, let me say this, bro. I'm I'm I'm impressed. I saw you had Tornado, but damn, you got Cosmos, Bambino, and Tornado.

>> Holy [ __ ] You let me tell you, you protected the your future right there. And then and then you also got to throw other stuff into them because if I'm just making tornadoes and cosmos, I'm competing with a lot of people.

>> Yeah.

>> So like I'm throwing like four or five different recess um codes, I'm throwing them into like DG clowns. Sounds like I threw Tornado into DG Clown and I threw you know, you gotta because

>> I if Tornado was 25K now in three years it's not 25K but if I have a tornado double head DG clown, you know

>> able to retain that, you know

>> right, but then it's it's exactly what you said, man, like in three years it all depends who sells that tornado [ __ ] like we it all depends who makes the the hottest tornado stuff and what they do with it. Do they sit on it, which would be the best thing, and protect that project, or are they going to spurse it out and just [ __ ] water it down a little bit? Which that's why something goes from 20K to 4K just like that, depending on who makes it, man. Like, if you got a mass guy who's all about just getting what they want and then try to cash out as soon as they can, they're going to flood the market with their [ __ ] you know?

>> You gotta be different like what you're doing. You gota you got to think ahead, you know?

>> You gotta be imaginative. Yeah. You gotta like try and think like I I try and think three years of the three years ahead.

>> Right now I'm doing projects for 2028. I'm trying like what what's in 2028? What do I think is gonna happen?

>> And yeah, like half of that stuff may not happen, but if I could make up for it with the other half,

>> then it's not as bad. You know, it doesn't hurt as bad because my bill is like I have over a thousand snakes.

>> I did 150 clutches this year.

>> So the rodent bill, I don't produce my own rodents. I buy my own. produce your own rodents? You don't produce your own rodents?

>> do you ever feel like, damn, this is like this is great, but like what if something happens to this plug and like or like do you have a backup backup backup plan for your

>> There's three guys out here that that are good with rodents. My main guy is he hooks it up though. So

>> you know, I'd be paying more for the other plugs, but you know, I I'd have to pivot somewhere. I have to either downsize a little bit and make it work with just, you know, I'd make it work or or I I have the space. I have property that I could if I have to, you know, I'll put something up and start hire somebody to breed rodents for me.

>> Yeah, dude. I went eight. I went eight years. I'm sorry. No, I can't say eight years. I did breed my first three years. I went a goddamn five years not having to breed rodents because how [ __ ] consistent and how reliable my plug was. Um, until uh he got hit with a hu like we had a huge heat wave one summer.

>> [ __ ] wiped everything out, dude. in and apparently like and I've said this before, but like I was on I wasn't on the very top of their their prime like primary customer list because they had they had a contract with the zoo like they had they had some big [ __ ] clients and so I just they just known me for years so they always hooked me up and they knew you know they they basically sponsored me like they would they would hook it up and so once I lost that bro it was like a huge like and then once they came back it wasn't the same all the rats were a lot smaller everything was different and I was like this ain't going to work and then once I said [ __ ] it and got my own broaden production, dude. Oh, feels great. It's like it's like it's like having your own Whole Foods. It's like all right, let me get some my snakes need to eat. Let me go out there.

>> I would probably just do all ASFs at worst case scenario, you know, if I had to breed.

>> Yeah,

>> because, you know, they produce a lot of babies. It takes a little longer, but they're high quality. I see a couple guys out here in the East Coast,

>> bro. ASF guys. He does his own ASFs and he's very successful. You know,

>> that's such a great road. I love ASFs. They're just they're just like they're not that dirty. They're they're not dirty at all. They're they're

>> Yeah. A week when I So I have rats and I have ASFs. And so um every week

>> it's not the [ __ ] ASF you smell. It's all the rats. It's only rats. The rats are [ __ ] Amelia was telling me because he uses he uses pine pellets and he used and just just the pine pellets, right, Emilio?

>> Yeah.

>> And and so which is great because it absorbs everything. Especially like a mouse or ASF, you're never going to have [ __ ] on the bottom of the tub if you have those pellets. But the rats now. Oh, you're going to have it for sure. The rats. The rats. There's no way around scrubbing a [ __ ] tub of rat [ __ ] Like it's because they're all there. It's like piled on, bro. They sleep on it. [ __ ] gross bastards. Anyways, ASF's great, man. So, so ASF, is that the primary diet for all your stuff now? Or do you feed rats?

>> No, I feed rats. Primarily rats. I probably like

>> I probably have like 10 to 20 that eat ASF, but you know, I try and feed them rats. I'll throw an ASF in there to get them started and I'll piggy back with a rat. just to try and get, you know, a bigger meal in them. But I feed mostly rats only they're bigger and they're readily available for me. You know, I could just go to my guy and he'll be like I'll be like, "Let me get 600 rats, medium size, and it's there."

>> Are your first meals to a baby ball python a rat or a mouse? What do you

>> A rat pup?

>> A rat pup.

>> They don't take like I mark, you know, I'm very very organized myself. I could go back to 2012 and if I sold you a snake in 2012 and you told me the ID number within a minute I could tell you who the parents are, what the breeding was, what the babies were in the clutch. So, I mean,

>> yeah,

>> I'm very organized with everything. And so, if a if a baby doesn't take a wrap pup after two tries,

>> I throw a mouse in there. Yeah, I' I've tried because it'd be so much easier if I could just offer a a a rat a rat pink or pup to a ball python, but for whatever reason, like if I'm feeding, let's say 30 babies, at least 10 of those [ __ ] won't eat the rat. They But if I do mice, they don't eat mice. All of them always take a mice for me. So just to make my life easier, I [ __ ] do mice for like two meals, three meals tops, and then they immediately will take a rat right after that. Uh, but I

>> Anthony. When you say rap pup, are you are you saying rap fuzzy?

>> Uh, yeah.

>> Okay. Because Yeah. Here, at least here in down south, we have, you know, we rap pink, rap fuzzy, rap pup. And rap pup. The rap pups we have here are pretty damn big.

>> Oh, I know. They call those rat chubs up here.

>> Okay. Okay. Okay. Hey, let me get 30 chubbies. Yeah. No, it's and that's honestly I'm glad you mentioned that Alio because dude people don't realize that there's different sizes preferences like the way we consider the way we label these size rodents. It's different depending where you live sometimes and and not everyone's small rats are the same. I realize like there's some condro guys who like you know I brought them on the show and they'll be like yeah I feed small I'll feed a small rat every now and again. I'll go to their collection and their [ __ ] snakes's massive. I'm like, "Yo, let me see the size of this small rat, dude." Like, and it'd be like closer to a medium. And it's like, "Holy shit." So, definitely like pay attention to like when somebody's talking on a podcast and they say exactly what Anthony just said, "Yeah, I feed rat pups." Well, find out what is a rat pup in your area because he's talking about actual fuzzies, which is that next stage from a pink. It's a pink hair, basically. You know what I mean? Um,

>> so anyways. Okay. Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up. So, you know, kind of going back to uh some of the earlier days with you, Anthony, what were some of the struggles? Um, if there was any, I don't know. Like I I want to know if there was learning curves for you in the beginning, especially because it's not it wasn't as easy as going to YouTube and finding a [ __ ] you know, a podcast or a vlog to learn from. So, like what did you struggle with anything in the beginning while you were growing everything? So like for the f even now, but for the first few years, I would spend probably like two to three hours a day researching going on Facebook going on YouTube. I mean, there wasn't much out there.

>> but I was trying to find whatever I can find to and learn from wherever I could learn

Like, and if they don't get it that year, they know, like, here's the thing, bro. If you get [ __ ] in this game, karma has a way of working itself out. So you're not breeding you're not breeding a lot of them then right? >> No. So I do 1.5 on my breeding and I breed from December 1st to June 1st. So I average about 64 65% hatch, you know, um laying rate on my females. >> Okay. Um, but a lot of females are making either going to be an adult this year because I I hold back so much or a lot of them didn't make weight. Like if they if like I'm big on like come like Thanksgiving weekend, I'm home with my wife and we're weighing animals and she's on the laptop typing and I'm like, you know, clown one ate 2,000 grams, you know, and I'm just reading off jeans to her and she's writing it down. Then I sit down and I go through everything and you know stuff don't hit that those grams. I usually breed I they have to be at least 1450 and uh if they don't hit that then I don't breed them you know. So um I say a thousand adults but there could be some that are adult by age but maybe they don't have their weight or they didn't eat as good after they laid. So I won't breed them. I probably breed at a thousand maybe 600 >> a thousand a thousand animals at 64% is pretty good >> because I've always heard that the bigger your collection is >> harder it is >> you dip into the 50s into the 40s. >> Yeah. >> Um it's just hard to to get that many animals up going every year or every other year. Right. >> Yeah. my snake room. When I had it done, I had a contractor come in and uh I had it completely insulated top to bottom and closed off from the rest of the house and it holds a steady um 65% humidity all year long and 80° all year long. >> It's awesome. So, I don't know if that has something to do with the decent, you know, um, lane, but I just had a building built and stuff's getting moved now to the bu new building, and I'm kind of concerned like now it's going to be relying on, you know, a a system, a heating system, a cooling system, and now I'm not going to have as much control over the temps. And I don't know how well they're going to do. So, I was probably going to do move half of the animals there, see how they do, and then move the other half. >> Is this Is this your first time moving animals like that? >> Yeah. Um, no. When I lived in the city, I had animals and then when I bought the house here, I moved them all over here. They actually, some people say when you move animals, they don't do as well that first year. They did great um that first year, but I recently had a collection that I bought brought in and um like only out of like 20 snakes, only two of them laid >> all those. I mean, to me, I feel like the market, so years ago, you could find guys who would buy, you know, low-end stuff, mid-level stuff. I feel like everyone wants high-end only now. Like, every time I go to sell snakes, they're like, I want, you know, the $2,000 snakes and up, you know, >> and it's nice to have those customers, but sometimes I don't have those snakes that they want. >> And and and then what do I do with all the stuff that's sitting around? I got to, you know, make those sales, too. So, And when you make those sales on market, now you got to deal with the uh husbandry questions, you know, husband, you know, I gotta walk, you know, hold their hand. And you know, and I don't mind customer service is everything. Me about Zebra and where it's at right now?

I think it did lose some gas, but there's a lot to do with it. It's still beginning to me. Um, I remember when Zebra first came out, everybody was saying that it was McKenzie, the McKenzie Gene.

That was proven. Yeah, that was proven.

And how did we prove that?

But, um, you gotta throw it to a few recessives, see what it does. you know.

DG. I would throw it to Zantic, you know.

Um, I I with with pattern, you know, pattern changers, I don't like to really mess with the pattern as much. Like some people might throw into like an enti, but I wouldn't go that route or I wouldn't even go monsoon route because then you're going to have just something that looks like a monsoon, you know?

Color changes, you know?

Yeah. You want to keep Zebra for what it is, you know?

Yeah, I want to see it, you know. Th draw couple that'll make it look better and some color enhancements, change it up a little bit like that.

Because I I've seen some example of zebras that are more extreme than the others. And I would focus on that extreme zebra patterning, like make it bold as possible and just make it [ __ ] crazy looking. And and I think you could do that with that project for sure.

Anthony um has the one that Steve hit that hadic. It didn't have anything else but exantic, right? I want to see an orange dream exantic zebra.

I want to see DG in it.

Yeah. And DG.

Yeah. Some stuff you just can't really mess with the pattern. But yeah, I like that DG zebra. That's going to look nice.

I have it up right here. Check this out. Um, because I saw this at the show. He brought this at Tinley. Um, I don't know if it was this exact one, but he's like I He's like, "My next goal is to get DG into this." He's like, "I I want DG." And we all know with DG this would definitely be like whoa. It would be more like like more of an piece of art. You know what I mean?

That's a exantic. Super pastel zebra tsk. Exantic.

Yeah, it's really [ __ ] awesome. And it's super pastel, which you know, unnecessary, but if you if you just have pastel in the mix, that's going to be a beautiful animal. And I don't know, do you guys think pastel is important in an exantic project? Because talking to some people who are ahead of that game, they say like they're not mad that Pastel's in the mix. Like Mark Bailey, bro, like his Exantic DG clown that he's hit, multiple that he's hit that had Pastel. He's actually happy it's had Pastel in it.

I think Pastel looks good with Exantic DGs.

It looks great. You know, Pastel works in some stuff like I think it works good decent in Puzzle. You know, it works good in DG works for a few jeans. It works good. It looks like [ __ ] with Monsoon. You know, some stuff it just looks really bad. Some stuff looks good. Like uh I think pastel looked good with the tri-stripe DG that I made.

Oh yeah. Yeah, that's the best tri stripes I've seen.

Yeah. And I It took me a long time to make that thing. Like I started that project from scratch. Tri-stripe to DG. I can't tell you how many clutches it took me then to make one.

Getting DGs or trist stripes. DGs or tri stripes. I finally hit one on my last egg. Last clutch. Last egg. So, keep that.

What was it? You had a DG Tri Stripe.

It's a super pastel DG Tristripe. Like, I would like it to have been pastel, but I'll take the super at this point, you know? I don't care.

I mean, since we're on the topic of [ __ ] you know, losing gas in a project, Trist Stripe, man, what's going on?

I I'm That's the only the only project I'm doing with Tri Stripe only because I've been in it probably for 10 years and I was just like, I gotta make it, you know?

I remember selling um female adult DGs in 2016 for like 400 bucks.

There's, you know, a lot of lot of downs, but, you know, you stick with it and you'll get back on on track and you'll make, you know, what you want to make make some money and be happy doing it. Um, buy your females first and then buy that powerhouse male, you know, that's where that's the way I've always done it. I've always bought a ton of females and then uh I get that one good male to put to them, you know, the year later. And uh at this point I have so many males though that I could just rotate everybody around and I don't have to actually, you know, I do chase the one or two projects every year.

That's just the way it is. You got to keep relevant. It is it is a good problem to have when you have like you know a lot of breeder males like ready to go like especially good good ones, you know.
